Helps keep the cases in better shape (especially cardboard sleeves) if you save the plastic. It's too hard to do with most American DVD's, but it's fairly easy to do with game plastic.

I don't have any recent pictures, but you can see what I did to my J-pop from ages ago.

Best Buy will be offering a free copy of 300 to buyers of the 360 HD add-on from the 19th to the 25th. So you get a player and seven movies (King Kong, 300, and the five mail-away titles) for $179.

Cmon man, if HD DVD couldnt beat BD on July 31st (HD DVD had better releases that week), then there's no hope for Heroes making a dent. Universal is doing a terrible job marketing that set, I'd be surprised if people even knew there was an HD DVD version.
To what extent do they really have to market it right now? BD & HD DVD audiences are still small, heavily enthusiast audiences, who do their own product research and don't rely on large advertising campaigns to get their info on upcoming releases. A press release that the Heroes season one set is coming is more than enough to almost max out sales among the current HD DVD owning populace.

Hmm, I like that new Dracula cover. What's the big problem with it? The old cover looks great, but also a bit, well, old - as in oldschool design/font.

Have any of you seen Flags of Our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima on HD? If so, which did you prefer?

In terms of PQ, I think they're both similar (with a slight edge to Flags), but as a movie, Letters from Iwo Jima is the better film imo. Both good movies, though, and both look great in HD.

Warner Home Video's "300" juggernaut continued to roll over the competition in its second week in stores, as the fast-paced action movie retained the top spot on the national home video sales chart the week ending Aug. 12 despite a strong challenge from newcomer "Disturbia," from Paramount.

The edgy thriller "Disturbia," with a boxoffice pedigree of more than $80 million, debuted at No. 2 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, although its total unit sales were only about 53% of what "300" did its sophomore week.

"Disturbia" did manage a No. 1 bow on Home Media Magazine's video rental chart, generating $9.7 million in rental revenue. That was enough to push "300" down to No. 2, even though the video game-like movie managed to generate an additional $9.5 million, a decline of just 20% from its opening-week tally.

Warner's "TMNT" movie debuted at No. 3 on the First Alert sales chart but could only muster a 12th-place bow on the rental chart. Sony Pictures' "Are We Done Yet?," a comedy with Ice Cube that grossed $49.7 million in theaters, debuted at No. 4 on the sales chart and No. 3 on the rental chart, with earnings pegged at $6.8 million.

We'll have to wait tomorrow for the proportions of the sales.

I'm still waiting for these on my zip rentals. They keep sending me crappy DVD place holders i've put on my list.

Mana, why woldn't you just get a free replacement? BTW, you're the first person I've heard outside of AVSforum that's had the problem. How long before it appeared? Does it affect the ability to play (I assume)? I should go look at my discs and see it it's appeared.

I own both. I definately have to give the edge to Letters as a better movie. I really don't have a preference as to PQ though, they both look nice.

That's not High Def though. Things could be different.

Well, 300 is still #1 in high def. It's really battle for number 2&3
I thought those numbers were in fact hi def, which would indicate that 53% of 300's sales would make disturbia 132k, which would then be two firsts we have never had which is a title making over 100k two weeks in a row AND a second title making 100k at the same time.

watched Disturbia Blu-ray last night

....an entertaining flick in the end (which is all I wanted from it) with fantastic PQ!

watching Shooter on Blu-ray tonight....

Yah so did i. :lol But then I read the last paragraph. I think there would be some carry over from the standard def.

A (cheesy) video tour from HollywoodiHD of that Disney Blu-ray Mall Tour thing.
http://www.hollywoodinhidef.com/sho...ds/bv_bluraymalltour_large.flv&position=2.142

Looks like it's actually a manned booth with little presentations. The cameraman seems to focus on one individual in particular a few times. :)

Also, anyone have any predictions on when Sony may try to release Superbad on BR? Doesn't seem that unrealistic for a December release IMO.

The cameraman sidelines for MILFhunter on his days off. :lol

This is the kind of thing the format needs more of--consumer education is always a good thing. Nice to see the Panny player and the PS3 front-and-center at the booth, too. Love that Panny. Maybe some PS3 owners will actually start to realize there is a Blu-ray player in there too! :lol

Disney seems to be really doing a lot on the customer education front. More than Sony, for sure. The video they have on their site hyping the interactive features on the new Blu-ray release of CARS is especially good.

There was actually another link given in the post I found, but it seems like that list is no longer being updated as of Aug. 1st. Another guy is taking over the old list and doing the new site.

Sweet Disney news:

http://www.digitalbits.com/#mytwocents

Buena Vista has just announced that they're planning to release Sleeping Beauty, Finding Nemo, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and National Treasure on Blu-ray in 2008. The Chronicles of Narnia will arrive first in the spring, followed by National Treasure next summer. Disney and Pixar's Finding Nemo and the Platinum animated Sleeping Beauty will debut in the fall. Both Narnia and Nemo will offer full motion picture-in-picture bonus features, and National Treasure will be the studio's first BD-Live title. Sleeping Beauty will reportedly include a virtual castle and multi-player activities, also via BD-Live.

Next up! Lion King!

From the Press release following up Oni's post.

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/pressrelease_disney2008bluray.html

"The Platinum titles are the crown jewels of the Disney Studios and we do not take releasing them lightly on any format. The proven Blu-ray technology has allowed us to take our films to new heights, fully utilizing the larger capacity and interactive capabilities for an incredible all-new consumer experience," commented Bob Chapek, President of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

In addition, WDSHE announced the special edition release of the action-adventure blockbuster National Treasure, which will become the Studio's first BD-Live Blu-ray Disc title. In addition, the Studio will bring two of its treasured family classics to Blu-ray Disc, Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, both of which will feature full motion picture-in-picture bonus features,

"The strides that we've made with this format are just the tip of the iceberg and we are confident that consumers will be astounded by the level of entertainment that can only be achieved by using the maximum capacity of the Blu-ray Disc format. All of these wonderful titles will appeal to the ever growing Blu-ray market and we are extremely proud to offer these in the most pristine and robust presentations ever for Disney fans around the globe," continued Chapek.

Doesn't sound like a studio that will go neutral. It's sad though that Finding Nemo is more than 1 year away! :(

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
Yeah, Disney seems like they're very heavily entrenched in the Blu Ray camp. Unfortunate for me, since I'd love to get Narnia and Finding Nemo in HD. Let's see where we are in terms of Blu Ray player prices by the time they come out. So far, PoTC and Casino Royale haven't been enough incentive to spend $500 for a BR player. I will not buy a standalone BR player at anything higher than $150 either, so either the Ps3 has to come down in price or the dual format player has to drop in price significantly. :(

I'm thinking that, much like last year, the Ps3 will come in all kinds of bundles this holiday. If Amazon puts out a decent bundle like they did with the Elite (perhaps an R&C pack-in) that would be very enticing.

yeah, see, finding nemo and narnia have me EXTREMELY excited for disney on blu-ray, not shit like pirates (at least 2 and 3) and cars.

when those films come out next year, day one purchase for me, no questions asked.

I asked in another thread, and this looks like a very strong blu ray thread, but I have an opportunity to get an HD-DVD player for the 360 rather cheap, and I wanted to know how that would look on my CRT -Component HDTV that goes up to 1080i .... thanks for your help

Excellent, and HD discs usually looks superior to HD via cableTV.

No reason not to pick it up and enjoy HD on the cheap, even if blu eventually "wins".

Unless he's one of the many, many people who feel like they wasted money when they buy into a format that croaks.

There are tons of reasons not to pick one up. I'm not saying there aren't any good reasons to pick it up, but pretending that everything is AOK with HD DVD and that no one in the world should regret their purchase even when the format dies is just wrong.

Malleymal -- if you don't mind either A) having an extra machine in your entertainment system for the next few years or B) re-purchasing content you bought on HD DVD on Blu-ray, then by all means, jump all over it. Buying in doesn't make any sense to me personally, but that doesn't mean it doesn't make sense to you. I don't mind waiting for the Universal exclusives (and the Warner exclusives) and I have a PS3, so player pricing and the like isn't an issue -- a cheap 360 add-on is probably not a bad idea for some people, though.
