you think that's bad? Those purchases are since Aug 01 (tax is figured into those I didn't buy in Oregon) and I'm sure I'm going to spend at least $300 more this fall, and that's not counting games.

Well you have to understand, I'm extremely cheap. :p

Actually I blew about $100 on DVD/Blu Ray this past week.

Dexter S1 $27.99
Spaceghost S1&2 $14.99x2
Darkman Trilogy $9.99
Black RAWK Down $13.99
Kung Fu Hustle $13.99

It's f@cking shameful. :(

I've really got to curb this habit, but for TV series it doesn't hurt as much as I rationalize it as I'm definitely getting my money's worth.

Damn and there are movies like 300 on the list.

Edit: Works on both models too

I havent, but per their policy, they have a 30 day price match.. but it doesnt apply to promotional (i.e. buy 1 get x free) offers. I also cant return the one I allready bought because I mutilated the box to get the UPC code so I could return it.

Its not a huge deal, it was still worth it for the price I got, but man three free movies of my choice would have rocked.

Also, if you can get a PS3 with 8 movies for 470 bucks? wow thats hard to pass up. I thinks their system is fubared.

Edit: What an odd promo... its supposed to be for HDDVD, but it works for BRD too.. plus alot more BRD movies are listed under the HDDVD list than HDDVD's are :lol

Looks like it also works with the 360 HD-DVD Addon.

If you've been thinking about getting this HD DVD player for your Xbox 360, now's a good time to get one. Add the Xbox 360 HD DVD player to your cart, then add 3 HD DVDs from this list. Prior to checkout, Amazon will deduct the price of the HD DVDs. Then, send in this mail-in rebate http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/00/00/00/68/30/85/68308597._V29586871_.pdf to get another 5 HD DVDs for free.

Goodness gracious, I just bought a frickin 57" dlp rear projection tv (getting it delivered this afternoon). I need a 1080p device, so now I have to choose between the 1080p HD DVD player or the Ps3. :(

Can I pull the trigger on another blockbuster move? (the first being actually signing for the tv yesterday)

Will my wife support this new endeavor?

there have been a lot of awesome deals this week.:D

I am currently deciding if I want to spend the 70 on Heroes or spend that and get a good number of movies.

probably not

Well, my wife supported the tv (mostly because we didn't have to pay a down payment).

This deal is unbelievable. I have a 60GB Ps3, Apocalypto, Dead Man's Chest, and Casino Royale in my cart.......for $478. WOW

My thing is, if I somehow manage to wait, what are the chances of a better deal this holiday season? Good chance, I think.

I'll see if I can just add the 1080p with 3 HD DVD's and see what that comes to.

Amazon just went apeshit on us HD enthusiasts. Christmas in August.

Im not sure if thats a bonus :lol

For what it's worth, I think the same thing is true for the 360! Small-scale twitch games FTW!

<----- Recently played Geometry Wars for the first time, wants a 360 for that more than anything else.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
Toshiba HD-A20 1080p HD DVD Player
The Departed
TMNT
Shaun of the Dead
Casablanca
Apollo 13
Four Brothers
The Rundown
The Perfect Storm

$308

Vs.

Sony Playstation 3 60GB
Casino Royale
Apocalypto
PoTC Dead Man's Chest
Chicken Little
Corpse Bride
Resident Evil 2
Babel
Kiss of the Dragon

$478

I put in my personal picks for the 5 movie offer promotion (it's my decision, after all). Both 5 free movie offers suck, but I prefer the HD DVD options. I prefer the 3 Amazon movies I can get on Blu Ray, though.

I'm not even sure I can pull the trigger on either, but the $170 difference is a big deal, plus I can further subsidize the Toshiba player by selling off my add-on.

Yeah, but with the other you *do* get a whole new game system.

This is true, and a very big consideration. But with so many big titles due out this year on 360, it doesn't have as much pull. The biggest draw for this year on Ps3 for me is Ratchet & Clank.

If I believed in a two-format future, this would be the deal to push me over the edge.

In your case, the Amazon deal would be about $208 instead of $308, since you can make do with the A2 (with your 720p projector).

That really makes me mad. I just dropped 240 for a A2 with 5 movies :(

I just checked.

It's $218 for the A2 with 8 free HD DVD's, shipped free.

edit:

Stooge, do the Toshiba HD DVD players come with an hdmi cable?

And, the Ps3, it still ships with composite cables, right?

dude, same here about being mad...

I just got an A2 for $200 and could have gotten one for a little more with 3 free combo movies (including TMNT which I would love to own)...

it's a tad aggravating to see waiting a few weeks would have gotten me an awesomely better deal, but gues I should be happy to see others buying into HD finally with good deals...

HD DVD players=no HDMI in box

the PS3 comes w/ composite yes

I just use the same HDMI for both as the PS3 is on top of the HD DVD player and I only have 2 HDMI ports and one is always connected to cable.

I need a new reciever:p

Edit: I guess I could just hook DirectTV directly to the TV....

Oh and Van I am not selling my player now. I have decided that I am going to wait and hold on to this one till sometime next year and then get a combo when the prices drop as 1 player>2 players

I'd spend the extra to get the better player. 1080p, in case I upgrade or get a second TV. Is the A3 a better build, and does it boot faster?

hmm, sucks on both counts. I'll just monoprice 2 or 3 of them. I'll also need another optical for audio.

The sucky part is that Amazon won't ship either hardware to me, so I'll have to send it to my sister's house and have her ship it to me.

Amazon sells HDMI cables for $1 something. I think it's a frikken travesty that HD players (PS3 included) doesn't come with a HDMI cable!

For example, if the PS3 comes with a HDMI cable, the cool factor alone "WOW! I get best picture and sound through this little thing?" can persuade someone to get an HDTV if they're using a standard one. I can't believe the MORONS at Sony marketing can't see this! Even a cheap 6feet one will do.

yeah, why a 300 dollar machine (or more) cant come with a 5 dollar cable is beyond me. Heck, HDDVD players come with RCA composite cables.. I cant wait to see the look on J6Ps face when it looks the same as his DVD player :lol

this deal must be going down well. the ps3 has shot to number one on amazon.

60-70 dollar worth of free movies.. plus another 100-120 dollars worth of movies by mail.. and a PS3 under retail price?

If I hadnt just bought an HDA2 and HK 247 reciever (coming tommorow lossless audio in the whole house!) I would be all over that deal.

What is the difference between the A20 and XA2 players?

I already have the 360 add-on, but I've been thinking about replacing it with a standalone for awhile.

Xa2 is the "higher end" player. It loads a bit faster, has better upconversion on SD content and features analog audio outs so you can get lossless audio without an HDMI capable reciever.

If you have an HDMI capable reciever go with the A20, its a fine machine. If you have a reciever that doesnt do audio via HDMI but has analog audio jacks (most from the last 5 years do) you might want to go with the upgrade.

heh J6P thinks DVD is HD! I was at a less video tech inclined friends house and mentioned that I had LOTR recorded in HD on my DVR. "Don't you have the DVDs?" yeah I said but those are standard def... "oh I thought DVD was high definition" I just shook my head slowly.

Just got around to watching the lives of others on blu-ray. Really great film, not exactly a visual masterpiece, but the art direction is good. The audio was pretty impressive though as they actually used all of the original recording equipment that the stasi used to get that analog tape sound. :D

I'm getting an HDMI capable receiver for xmas. The upconversion is a big factor. I just don't know if it's an extra $230 worth of factor though.

Better DVD-Video upconversion. It uses the Silicon Optix Reon chip, which is pretty nice.
EDIT: Beaten, and the A20 is no slouch at upconversion.

The A20 (and the A2) do very good upconversion as well. The XA2 is every bit as good as an oppo (i.e. its as good as anything out there at upconversion).. but the other two are pretty good too. I would personally say its not a 230 dollar value. I got the XA2 because (at the time) I didnt have an HDMI reciever.

Funny movie, but a pretty meh transfer.

I disagree, I think for an old movie, it looks really good. I didn't expect that film to look as nice as it did, but then again, I haven't seen a ton of old movies on HD.

I was pleasantly surprised with Coming to America, given that it's a comedy from 1988. That said, old movies can look amazing, especially if they were shot on large-format film. For example, Grand Prix was shot on 65mm and looks better than just about any HD not sourced from a digital intermediate, despite being from 1966.

For what its worth, I think the upconversion on the HD-A2 is fine.

My old middle school football coach is in coming to america so it will always be in my library. doesn't hurt that it is a good movie
