First tragedy, then farce.

I'm assuming this super Amazon deal killed the going price for the 360 add-on at Ebay, right?

Thats the good news about me buying my HDA2 last week.. some poor fool payed 150 bucks for a 360 add on with no movies. :lol

Edit: they are still going for over 100 bucks. There are certain people that just assume ebay = cheaper. So they may not even know about the sale.

Sweet, I'll throw it up there Thursday and take the plunge on the A20.

Thanks for all the help.

There are always people on ebay that just assume buying used is cheaper. Like the guy that bought my xbox for $150 dollars in July of 2005, I paid $179 for in 2003 so I got 2 years out of it for $30.

I went out and tried to find some Blades of Glory on BD, but no luck.
I just know they had them in the back.

At Best Buy they had the HD DVDs out but with the BD price tag. :D

Just got back from lunch...........late. They delivered my 57" dlp tv and I had to be at the house.

Jaw-dropping gorgeous. I quickly put in King Kong (t-rex fight) and Planet Earth, and I've never seen anything more beautiful. I'm in love. I then put in Eternal Sonata demo (for the bright colors) and finally Gears of War. I'd heard many reviewers talking about an HD movie with a good transfer looking "3D" and I didn't understand what that meant.........until now. There were scenes in King Kong and Planet Earth that were truly popping out the screen.

Anyway, enough gushing. This is the tv I bought, btw.

$1800 on Amazon, $2500 where I live (with a stand, free delivery, and no down payment)

I wish I could just invite all you guys over to watch some movies. Heck, you could bring your Ps3 w/hdmi and we can watch some Casino Royale.

Seriously, the colors on that thing are ridiculously vivid, and the detail that HD allows is on full display.

edit:

What did you have before?

I had a 30" Samsung CRT. Good PQ, but the size really held it back imo. Plus, as you know, dlp displays colors so vividly that it makes my CRT look dim by comparison.

edit #2:

You don't want to sit where that couple is at. The one drawback from rear projection is viewing angle. you want to sit right in front to get the full effect.

I just looked at prices and I cannot believe how far they've dropped in the last year. That size and only 1080i last year would have cost a lot more!

This is indeed the dawn of the HD era.*

* I promise not to say anything that corny again today.

Indeed. While doing research on that, I caught an engadget story that talked about a smaller model (but still 1080p dlp rear projection) about 2 years ago, for close to $4000.

Days like these...

Van have you got Hot Fuzz yet? I bet it would look really nice on your new set. I'm looking into upgrading also. I currently I have a 42" Samsung plasma. I hear the new 1080p panasonic (or is it pioneer) plasmas are nice. That's still up in the air but I'm definitely upgrading to the 3rd gen 1080p Tosh model next month.

I got Hot Fuzz yesterday from Amazon.com and I held out on watching it on my CRT. I read the gushing hi def digest review and I CAN'T WAIT to see that on my new set.

Venturer HD DVD Player to Ship in Time for 2007 Holiday Sales
Venturer Electronics today announced the launch of its first HD DVD player for the North American market. Responding to strong consumer demand for high definition video playback devices, Venturer will introduce the SHD7000 that offers the superior HD movie experience as defined by the DVD Forum. Featuring 1080i video output and an HDMI connection, the SHD7000 is designed to be compatible with the vast majority of HDTVs already in North American consumers' homes. With Ethernet connectivity to the network , the SHD7000 also allows users to access bonus features from movie studio web servers and unlock special prerecorded content on some HD DVD discs. Dolby TrueHD rounds out the high definition experience by presenting the HD DVD disc soundtrack as it was meant to be heard, virtually equal to the studio master. In addition to its HD DVD playback capability, the SHD7000 will upconvert standard DVDs to near HD picture quality via its HDMI connection, allowing a consumer's existing library of DVDs to look better than ever. CD playback is also supported. The SHD7000 will be distributed in North America by Venturer Electronics of Markham, Ontario, and sold through national retailers with retail prices expected to be one of the lowest among entry-level HD DVD players.

You can get a 42 LG plasma for like 1200 bucks from BB which im sure you could find around 1000 for online.

That really does seem like the player Wal-Mart will be carrying this fall. It is manufactured by Alcoa, who manufacture Wal-Mart's brand of DVD players. I am expecting a price point of $149.99 in October.

I wouldn't be surprised if we hear about this deal at Cedia in September.

I don't think many Wal-Mart shoppers will notice 1080i vs 1080p. Most probably wouldn't have 1080p sets.

"Hey, Wal-Mart! I's done bought my favoritest movie of all-time, Smokey and the Bandit, but it don't plays in mah movie-playin' toaster. What for it don't work, anyhow?! So here I bringed it back so I's can git mah money back an' spen' it on a new carton o' tobaccy."

1080i is decent for movies, and looks a shitton better than SD.

I wanna know-- do things thing load slowly? have firmware problems? problems playing some discs?

And of course, low prices haven't done much for HD-DVD thus far. Are they really going to make a big difference when sub-$300 BD players are available as well?

There is a huge difference between $299 vs $199 or $149. When you get to the $149 point, you are asking the public to spend maybe an extra $50 premium over a regular DVD player for HD-DVD. That is huge.

And the reduction of HD-DVD players to $299 HAS dramatically increased HD-DVD player sales. Remember, up until about 2-3 months ago HD-DVD players were $400+.

BTW, when are we supposed to see sub-$300 BD players? This fall? I haven't read any news about that. Could you direct me to a link or thread? Thanks.

Yeah thats assuming that it has a good interlacing chip. I'm all for bringing HD to the masses, but low quality shit is not really going to impress anyone.

Uhh, 1080i can look just as good as 1080p, it all depends on your TV.

The way the current price drops are going I am expecting Blu Ray to be in the $299-$350 range, $100 more than whatever Toshiba has out there. They will not go after the low cheap players since that is part of the reason for the development of BD and why it has the support of a majority of CE companies.

In this case where the player has to interlace a 1080p siginal to 1080i, it depends on the players output + your TV. Not exactly a winning combo as most TVs can't de-interlace properly and I highly doubt a sub $200 HD-DVD player is going to do much of a job interlacing.

In order:

1) You can get a DVD play (component) for $50. You can get discount ones for less than that.

2) Software sales still lag hugely, shortly after price reductions Toshiba lowered it's HD DVD player sales estimate by 40+%.

3) It's my guess, based on how fast DVD, HD DVD, and other electronics proces have dropped. I imagine we'll see list prices ~$400 by Black Friday and street prices/deals getting that down under $300. I would bet on it. For some reason the pro-Red camp seems to think BluRay prices can't go lower.

I'm kind of glad the masses haven't started adopting yet because it's given the HD DVD companies time to sort things out...

3 things will be key to success of cheap players:

1. No need for firmware upgrades to play movie.
2. No problems with discs.
3. Quick boot-up time.

Regular people aren't gonna have the patience to do updates and send in for disc replacements when things don't work (Fox Java titles last year & Universal Children of Men problems come to mind).

The very nature of the BD consortium vs the HD-DVD consortium gives HD-DVD the price cutting advantage. If BD players were cut to the point where they aren't profitable, the BD CE companies would jump ship.

HD-DVD camp has no such problem. There is no need to keep HD-DVD players at inflated prices for profitability's sake. The two camps have two entirely different business frameworks.

I think the last few months have shown us that the HD-DVD camp has the ability and the will to lower prices fast. I expect $149.99 HD-DVD players to be commonplace this Thanksgiving. I'd be surprised if we see BD players much lower than $349.99 this fall, for the reason I mentioned above.

Ypu *have* noticed that BD player prices, while starting high, have come down at about the same rate? DO you think another price drop before the holidays is impossible,a nd can you back that up?

I think BD players will drop this holiday further, but not by nearly the margin HD-DVD players will. The reason I say so is because we have evidence that the Chinese HD-DVD players are coming, and that one of the brands will most likely be carried at Wal-Mart, who will want it to be a cheap as possible. Already, the last gen Toshiba players are rumored to go to an MSRP of $249.99 - $199.99 by next month.

The only rumor I have heard of a cheap BD player is the Funai player, and from the last I read about it, it might not even make 2007. And I don't think the BD CE companies are in a big rush to get cheap players out the door. They want to be profitable with their units.

60-70 dollar worth of free movies.. plus another 100-120 dollars worth of movies by mail.. and a PS3 under retail price?

If I hadnt just bought an HDA2 and HK 247 reciever (coming tommorow lossless audio in the whole house!) I would be all over that deal.

Terribly slow video switching. You should really consider the Pioneer 91TXH.

Nice set, VM. I had a 57732 once and loved it. My brother-in-law bought it from me when I moved to my new place, so my PS3 still goes over there for visitation!

This one must be amazing with the new features. Congrats, and enjoy!

I've been wanting to order 40-year old virgin for a while, but can't decide on what other 2 movies I'd want...

I sort of think I can go for Casino, Blood Diamond, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Deer Hunter, Backdraft, or Scanner Darkly...

I liked Waking Life and can go for that style of movie (in considering Scanner Darkly), but I don't know if any of those 3 are movies I'd get good viewing out of. 40 Year Old Virgin though I'd watch at least a few times, and I know my sister really wants to see it. I also like Goodfellas (in considering Casino), but I've only seen it a couple of times since I've owned it... I am a like Jim Carrey fan and I LOVE the movies Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty (though Dick and Jane was good not great, while Dumb and Dumber is ok as stupid comedy when tired; didn't think Truman Show was all that great), but I don't know how Eternal Sunshine compares to those movies in terms of style (not whether it's good or bad I know it's gotten wide acclaim) and don't know whether it would jive with me for repeat viewings....

I just don't know. Ideally I want a combination of personal movie preference + impressive visuals + well-liked by others. It sucks, but many people just aren't gonna sit down and watch Adventures of Robin Hood (one of my favorite movies I own), so I want to be selective about keeping a collection from now on (although personal preference trumps in the end).

I also have a $15 credit towards a bestbuy.com order (where I can do instore pickup), so maybe I'll just pick a up a single title like that.

eh, I think I'll wait this one out for now...

Venturer is sold only at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and Sears in the US, and also at some Tire company in Canada.

A fucking Tire company...which is really odd. Forgot their full name.

Edit: Found it. Canadian Tire carries Venturer electronics:
