Wow I need to take advantage of some of these amazon blu ray movie deals tonight. :)

For those who care, the Blu Ray top 10 average is at 42 right now thanks to this sale.

Companies should take look at this and see that 20 bucks seems like the sweet spot for HD movies.

Wow.. well, it looks like that Blu-ray sale has had quite a.. pronounced effect. :)

This is the first time I've ever seen Blu-ray holding the entire top 10, let alone top 18. I think this is also the first time the entire top ten (15), have been under 100 as well, regardless of format. The Departed is the only HD DVD in the entire top 25. Only five HD DVDs in the top 50.

This is an awesome deal. I ordered District B13, Enron, Kung Fu Hustle and The World's Fastest Indian at $15 apiece. I wish I hadn't already bought some of those other movies.

The crazy thing is that Casino Royale is still the top selling Blu Ray movie, and just moved into the top 20. I wonder if it'll crack the top 10 upon release?

Casino Royale seems to be a monster for Blu Ray.

The thing is, they had a similar sale like this last month for HD DVD with $5 off each title (which is pretty much the same here since it's 50% retail, not actual price), yet it didn't even come close to the kind of surge we're seeing.

There's some talk going on from Blu-ray and neutral supporters that the format war's un-official ending just started today (and surprisingly a few die hard HD DVDs who seem to be waving the white flag as well).

Sorta off-topic, but what cable movie channel is universal? Is it cinemax? I need to set up my DVR to record movies in HD that I can't get on bluray yet :D

UniversalHD :lol

Which sale was this? I don't remember it, was the selection as big?

edit, you mean the $5 glitch, where they were taking $5 off every order and it lasted for what? a couple hours? and alot of people didnt even get the discount? and it wasnt just hd dvd it was bluray also since i ordered 2 bluray and 2 hd dvds. in 4 orders. I wouldnt call that an "similar sale for hd dvd" i'd call it a "late night glitch that only some people got to take advantage of for both formats."

Cool, where is this talk at AVS?
At the Megadeth boards this jackass bought a 360 and apparently the hd dvd addon, and then started a thread bitching that Casino Royale was blu-ray only.(He forgot it was Sony pictures movie). The board has quite a few tech people, so this thread brought out quite a few blu-ray trollers.

Thanks for the tip, just purchased 11 Blu-rays from the Amazon sale. I've heard bad things about the transfers of Fifth Element and House of Flying Daggers, but for $15 its worth it.

I own HoFD, and it's not as bad as people make out. The thing is is that it's better than any DVD version, but not as good as the top transfers. I was pleased, but maybe I just have low expectations?

That's good to hear; thanks for the impression, now I'm really looking forward to my purchase :D

Keep this in mind: When someone says, "this Blu-ray/HD DVD transfer sucks" it's still better than any DVD transfer (720x480i vs 1920x1080p, it's no comparison) by a mile due to the increased resolution and color! If you watch the movies on a 26" screen, then you're not going to notice much.

Also, be aware, Sony is prepping a re-release of "The Fifth Element" with a superior transfer - since the original was sub-par in terms of what's available in HD. However, an insider at the AVS forum says they're planning to have a trade in program for anyone that bought the original disk to get the new one.

Well . . . I assumed it would be better then DVD; that's a given, but it was hard to be motivated to buy a Blu-ray movie at full price for a movie that I already own on DVD and with sub-par reviews. I have a 1080p set so its worth it for $14.50 even if the transfer isn't perfect. Regardless, thank again for the tip DarkJediKnight :)

Nice. With free shipping and the 10% off deal, 39 dollars for Memento, Tears of the Sun, and Black Hawk Down. What is the quality of those particular movies on BR?

Just read some totally awesome news over at AnimeOnDVD.com:

"An update at DVD Drama in France is reporting that Satoshi Kon's Paprika will arrive on DVD and Blu-ray on 06/20/2007. Paprika is distributed by Sony in the US and appears to be involved with its distribution in France. Sony's current policy is that their films, if out of theatrical distribution, will be all-region on Blu-ray. They also design their releases to be "ported" between regions with relative ease, which means there is a very good chance of this being a US release this summer."

I'm conflicted about buying X3. I bought 3 movies tonight, but not X3.... if it was 15 i'd buy.

I kinda felt bad about getting X3, but aside from Memento, it was the only film on the list I was somewhat interested in.

I was hoping that Good Night and Good Luck would've been listed, too.

Seems like the amazon sale goes on through March 27, very nice.

It would be nice for only one format to last, and the sooner the better. But these "experts" claimed Blu Ray was doomed three months ago.

Of course it is pretty apparent Blu Ray is here to stay. The only thing HD DVD can accomplish now is to attempt some sort of stale mate, which doesn't help out anyone.

It doesn't look like any of the B&M retailers (Best Buy, Target, Circuit City) will have a sale price on Casino Royale, although it appears that you can get the die-cast car for free with the purchase of it on BD as well as DVD. $30 seems to be the price you'll find it in most stores.

$27 over at Amazon.com looks like the best deal. Just put down a pre-order for it and Volver, which is going to be absolutely GORGEOUS in high definition.

Latest numbers from last week, and this one is a killer blow to HD DVD. In the last few weeks, Blu-ray has had a 67% share - and most would attribute that to their exclusive titles. But what happened during the 1st week of March?

HD DVD: Bullitt, NIN, Getaway
Blu-ray: Bullitt, NIN, Getaway, Stranger than Fiction

So basically, Blu-ray had 1 exclusive title which isn't a format seller by any means, and it certainly isn't a title that the vast majority of PS3 owners would buy.

Yet, what happened was, Blu-ray retained their 67% share for the week, revealing that it is outselling HD DVD even for multi-format releases. I honestly expected a 55/45 week lead for Blu-ray. 67% is unheard of for a week like that.

YTD:
BD: 67.24% HD: 32.76%

SI:
BD: 52.23% HD: 47.77%

Code:

In other words, the assumption was wrong. A safer assumption would probably have been that there are still a fair amount of people buying PS3s and buying movies to go with them. In order to get an HDDVD player right now you still have to be going out specifically to buy it, and they're still relatively pricey.

Not to say that the trend won't stay in that direction, but it seems a little reminiscent of the UMD situation still, where initial sales were fairly positive and stayed that way for a while. The big difference being there's now something to compare it to. Obviously, no comparison is ever that simple, but to assume that this honeymoon period will end the whole game is a bit idealistic.

I don't agree. On the contrary as long as PS3 keeps selling by the hundrends of thousands BluRay sales will only get better since there will be more and more BluRay players out there. As for DarkJediKnight's logic I don't see what's wrong with it considering that most of the time BluRay titles released every week are twice the number of HD-DVD ones.

The difference with UMD is that most of the sales it had early on can be attributed to the fact that there was very little software for the PSP. Once the software picked up, UMD sales slowed down.

With Blu-Ray and PS3, most people have the system hooked up to their home theater and will buy Blu-Ray regardless because of how good it looks on their sets and how it sounds on their systems.
