Well, It'd be interesting to see if HD DVD was having a 50% off sale as well wouldnt it?

Which we'd only see if people were interested in promoting HD-DVD at this point-- which apparently nobody is.

I rented it. It looks better than the HD broadcast, and it also has master audio in PCM, which you'll never get from tv anyways. With that said, I hate the Sopranos.

The magnolia titles are all on 50% sale, yet the Blu-ray Magnolia title, World's Fastest Indian were outselling the HD DVD magnolia titles by a 4:1 ratio. HD DVD with a 50% off wouldn't even dent what Blu-ray did because it doesn't have the installbase to do so. A lot of people who never thought to try Blu-ray (and have a PS3) got in on the action.

Also, when you buy a HD DVD player now, they give you 5 free HD DVDs. It went from 1, to 3, and now 5. By summer, when you buy a HD DVD player, they'll throw in the entire catalog. :lol

Does anyone know if choosing uncompressed audio will make any difference if my ps3 is just hooked up to my tv through hdmi. It seemed to make it a little louder, but does it make the quality any better? I tested it on Invincible and Black Hawk down.

You can only get 2.0 PCM. And yes, it will sound as good as your tv speakers can. The better the speakers the better it sounds.

Kingdom of Heaven is my first BluRay experience - it's gorgeous. From the posts here it seems some movies have received better treatment than others. Is there any way to find this out before purchase?

So what happened with SED? I heard it was a whole court deal and something something no one can come out with it now :lol

Though as DarkJedi said before, they are all going to look better than DVDs, unless the transfer is absolutly horrible or something.

Toshiba basically got cold feet knowing that the LCD and Plasma market will catch up to what SED could do and at a FAR FAR cheaper price by the time it's released.

At this point, consumers are familiar with LCD and Plasma. If you're going to introduce something new, it had better stand out from the competition.

Considering the specs of the LCD and Plasmas announced, well, you do the math.

I did see it in HD. It looks a lot more solid in BRD, although Sopranos is shot without much moving camera, in a very classic operatic style, which HD broadcast can handle okay without too much macroblocking. The scene that really got me was the one where Tony goes to the "reunion house" in his dream (not a spoiler, don't worry) -- the christmas lights were all these beautiful little points of light.

That's what I want to see more of, comparisn shots of dvd to bluray or even hddvd. Done exactly like that fantastic four shot. Same frame in the movie and everything.

US: DVD & Blu-Ray July 3rd

Really can not wait.

Yeah, I keep seeing all of these "Ghost in the Shell:[Insert subtitle here]" releases, but I want a US release of the first one, you know just plain old "Ghost in the Shell"! How freaking difficult is that? I've never seen any of these sequels/spinoffs.

Someone should make another thread just for that.

The original Ghost in the Shell sucked, GITS Stand Alone Complex (Insert Subtitle Here) is on the other hand ****ing awesome.

Depends on who still has the license. That's how difficult it is. Ghost in the Shell was released by Manga Ent. Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocense is Dreamworks. Ghost in the Shell: SAC 1 and 2nd Gig is Bandai/Manga. So is Solid State Society.

This is more of Bandai/Manga testing the Blu Ray waters with this movie, which is based on the most popular version of Ghost in the Shell going at the moment. Should this release sell up to par, I can see more movies hitting the format soon. This is the first BR release by an American Anime company, so it makes sense.

It may also all depend on the rights if they can release it on HD formats. I doubt Manga Ent. has the rights to release Ghost in the Shell in HD in the US, but I would love to be proved wrong. Alot of companies will probably have to go back in renegotiate for the rights to release in HD (especially since Japan/US are in the same region now).

OK, so as someone who likes the universe of the original Ghost in the Shell, which of these should I be buying? What's the best ones to get?

I'd give Stand Alone Complex a shot. Start with SAC (26 episodes), then SAC 2nd Gig (26 episodes), then Solid State Society. SAC really is very good.

Any word on when Lawrence of Arabia may be hitting BD? The promo video @ Best Buy said it was “coming soon” but I couldn’t find any info on Blu-ray.com for it (just said TBD). I figured if it was coming soon they may have a date floating around out there.

So far I own Black Hawk Down (with freezing thanks to the PS3).
Uh-oh, that's a dual layer disc, right? Does anyone else have this freezing problem with this movie, or some other dual layer release?

Is Bond DL? I had no problems with that but I've never had any problems.

Has this been confirmed? Manga released this information a few months ago alongside the DVD release date, but then quickly retracted the BD release information.

I don't see any new information over at AnimeonDVD, but I want to believe.

This however is cold hard fact. On Jan 1st, HD DVD had a 100:64 lead. In 2 months, Blu-ray has a 100:94 lead.

Update for sales ending March 4th:

YTD: Blu-Ray 100 vs HD-DVD 48.73
Since Inception: Blu-Ray 100 vs HD-DVD 91.46

I can see that the "since inception" number to widening every darn week. Hey SonyCowboy is that chart for NA only?

I just don't get the excitement here. Sometimes I think GAF doesn't realize how niche they are.

So was DVD once. I think people in this thread are just interested in the general growth of the format. Look at Casino Royale... it was number 11 on Amazon last time I checked.
