Exactly, and that difference is used to try to create a bigger price discrepancy than really exists.

I see what you're saying, but I still think its fair:

We've seen a lot of MSRP-slashing HD-DVD firesales, and Blu-Ray players rarely dip below $499.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
A quick look shows that the prices are more like $240 vs $430. We'll see how those sales ratios stand up over time.

lol, that's quite the difference from the $300 dollar spread you posted before. See the difference between posting out of your ass and posting informed?

edit:
Maybe you should talk to your friend below about doing the same:

We've seen a lot of MSRP-slashing HD-DVD firesales, and Blu-Ray players rarely dip below $499.

Right now on Amazon, you can get not one, but THREE different models of Blu Ray standalone players (ALL by different manufacturers) for less than $499.

Agreed. I already have a savings fund for that box set :lol

Don't be surprised though if the set releases on the same day.

I put it on my Christmas list.

Oh, I figure it will come out on the same day, I'd just like to know and see what the box will look like.

djkimothy said:
But then why are we comparing a player capable of outputting 1080p to one that can't?

We're just talking about what sells. And the long-standing mantra that HD-DVD will always sell more players because they cost less.

Same, hopefully it doesn't suck but that goes without saying. I like the cover though for the standalone OOTP releases though.

Somehow, I've gotten Van to argue the low cost of BluRay players! :lol :lol :lol

Van, seriously, I've already acknowledged your point, which is irrelevant to mine. It doesn't matter why BluRay sold more dedicated players, just that they did-- despite the oft-stated view that they'd never be able to, as long as HD-DVD prices were so low.

It's not like this was a case of $200 BluRay player vs $200 HD-DVD player.

How would they never be able to outsell HD DVD standalones, if they were ALREADY outselling them at the beginning of the year? What kind of revisionist history is this?

You got me there. Amazon does have a few below MSRP deals on both formats.

Do you think its a problem for HD-DVD that Amazon is only carrying players from 3 manufacturers while there a 6 brands selling Blu-Ray players on Amazon?

I saw:
HD-DVD:
Toshiba
RCA
LG*

Blu-Ray:
Samsung
Sony
Panasonic
Pioneer
Phillips
LG*

*dual-format player

And this is my opinion, but the manufacturers behind Blu-Ray are names I seek out in a store rather than avoid (RCA).

Show me one post in this thread before this week that claimed BluRay standalones had outsold HD-DVD standalones. Just one.

Just becuase it was an oft-repeated point doesn't mean it was true, and until now, we didn't know that it wasn't at least true for first half of the year. To quote an HD-DVD exclusive: "New shit has come to light."

The revisionist history is you claiming that the argument was never made.

Yeah, it's a problem, imo. Which is why it's a good thing Samsung is doing a dual format, and Onkyo/Integra, Venturer, and others get into the mix to diversify the hardware portfolio.

Part of the CE problem is that Sony and Phillips/Matsushita are part of the BDA core group, which means they have the most to gain from Blu Ray. They will most definitely NEVER do HD DVD hardware, and there's nothing Toshiba can do about that.

I expect the non-core CE companies (like Samsung) to eventually offer more HD DVD hardware as the format continues. The fact that they are doing a hybrid in the first place is a step in the right direction for HD DVD, since they were BDA-only and denied for the longest time that they would ever do a machine that could play HD DVD.

Did HD DVD gain a point in the YTD numbers? Hey, then maybe with another good week we can take back the SI point we lost last month or so. :lol

The numbers are as expected. Solid but not spectacular. Those are really good numbers for Heroes and BoG but still not enough to topple Blu.

2. Heroes 98.5
3. Blades of Glory	92.69
4. 300 HD 57.31
5. Wild Hogs 31.92
6. Planet earth BR	27.23
7. Casino Royale 25.57
8. Planet Earth HD	23.01
9. Pirates: DMC 20.98
10. Pirates: CBP 19.49

Someone on highdef digest forums pointed out something funny.

150 million dollars gets you hidden behind Bumble Bee.

It reminds me of Monsters Inc. when the 1 eyed cyclops would have his face obscured on a magazine with a bar code or something.

How is that funny? Its one ad. Im sure they wont have any other magazine ads, tv commercials that say HD DVD just that one, right there small. WTF? How are you not banned?

Are you referring to me?

It's funny cause it's not shown as prominently as their standard definition counterparts.

VanMardigan was close with his prediction, Blu-Ray prophet confirmed! :D

Glad my pessimism was misplaced, no releases for Blu-Ray and two of HD-DVDs biggest exclusives and gap continues to widen.

Just Transformers, Shrek and Bourne Ultimatum left now...

Unless all 3 of those are released in the same week, I don't see HDDVD taking a weekly sale. The install base of Blu-ray owners seems to be just too much to overcome.

It's not me. They cost waaaaaay to much. I'm not sure what shows they could offer to get me to bite.

Yeah, until they can bring down the price, I won't be part of that group, either.

Although, Lions Gate's handling of Weeds on Blu-ray has been awesome. Only $5 more than the DVD release? Yes, please!

Lionsgate did everything right with Weeds... they made sure that the releases were affordable, and most importantly, they released the first season first. I would be totally up for checking out Rescue Me, but I'm not about to go back and pick up standard def DVD sets to catch up. If they want me to buy into that show, they need to drop the price on the sets and release the first season.

The worst is HBO with the Sopranos sets, either format. $129.95 MSRP for 12 episodes? You gotta be fucking kidding me.

I have bought precious little TV on DVD to date, Sopranos being some of it. And the price really, really turned me off.

I honestly don't see how the Blu-ray offerings for Oct 16 can compete with Transformers. Unless Robocop spills over from the previous week.

What is the release week of the week after?

Also, when is Shrek 3 coming out? I never liked the Shrek movies myself so never would have bought it on Blu-ray.
