A couple of things:

1) :lol at Enderle being quoted.

2) My buddy just got a 40" Bravia and hell yes you can see the difference between SD and HD at under 42". Very, very clearly, no eye test about it.

Awesome for him!

I have a 37" Sharp (not an Aquos) and it can be clearly distinguished. I really can't go back to SD. :)

According to this post: http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=18089

Egmont Nordisk Film will be releasing Children of Men on BLU-RAY in the nordic region.
Nordisk Film is currently the Scandinavian distributor of the PlayStation brand.

I checked and indeed, Nordisk Film is the distributor of the movie Children of Men on DVD, but I havent heard anything about them going Blu-Ray.

Grain of salt.

That's a very compelling gift set! Too bad I don't like Harry Potter.

Uh...could have posted more info about it.

Also coming, we believe on 12/11, is a Harry Potter: Limited Edition Giftset which will include all 5 films, along with a special bonus disc of extras, the Hogwarts Challenge interactive DVD game, collector's cards, a set of bookmarks and more, all contained in Hogwarts steamer trunk packaging. According to the studio's press site, this box set will be available in DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD versions, and the high-def versions of the older films will be available individually on both formats as well. Here's a look at the contents of the DVD set...

Problem with this is that... is there going to be room for the 6th and 7th movies?

Because what's the point of buying such a great looking box.. that is incomplete?

Im completely with you on this.

I dont like the Potter movies enough to actually buy them... but even if it was something like LOTR or Star Trek that I did care about.. whats the point of buying an uber box set that is misisng two films?

Now, if Paramount were to do something with the Star Trek movies (say TOS in one set and TNG in another) I would be all over that like syrup on a pancake.

If something like that were to come out with the last movie, it would make sense. Right now it doesnt.

And yeah, :lol at Bill Hunt now proclaiming a rumor he started himself as fake as though it were some sort of victory.

WB just confirmed The Aviator is coming this Nov. to both formats.

YES!

Now, bring on Gangs of New York whoever the heck owns it (I have no idea).

So, looks like the leaked list may be true indeed.

Database error, FTW!

And even i am moderately surprised
jesus

so a few new anime films that came out are only available in combo packs

Ghost in the shell, Patlabor 1 and 2, etc...

so , say hello to having to buy the BR version -AND- the DVD together at the bargain price of $100 a shot.

Given the DVD version has been available for these for ages ... whats the friggen point?

Now that HD-DVD seems to be dead in Japan, it seems to be the green light for the BR releases to go batshit insane in terms of prices. Thank god for Amazon.com.

I highly doubt it. Unless that design spec existed from the beginning, it's not likely to work. Also, TL HD-DVDs are going to lose any sort of price advantage they once held since I doubt you can retrofit existing DVD manufacturing lines to make TL HD-DVDs.

I dunno if this has been mentioned here yet or not, but I figured I'd post it anyway.

Toshiba gains 51GB HD-DVD approval

Posted on September 9th, 2007 at 07:52 EDT

The DVD Forum, the international DVD standards authority, has approved a 51GB single-sided HD-DVD disc.

This disc uses three layers to store more information that is currently available on the Blu-ray discs, although those, too, can support multi layers to cram more data into one disc. In fact a Blu-ray disc can store 50GB on two layers.

Even though this new disc is most likely months away from being ready for mass production, it may serve as a threat to Blu-ray's main selling point: its superior storage capacity. On the other hand, 200GB Blu-ray discs, which use up to 8 layers, are currently being prototyped. The question then becomes, how much space is too much? In terms of high definition videos, it will soon become redundant, as movies and extra features will only take so much space, but perhaps for simple data storage, the bigger the better.

According to Toshiba, its entire line of HD-DVD players will be able to read these new three layer, 51GB discs, but will require a firmware update to do so.

Be sure to check back for more HD format war news.

It looks like no new hardware is needed at all, just a firmware update.

Is there really a difference with Animes in HD?

Yes. I prefer seeing my animation without digital artifacts on the big screen.

I agree about the digital artifacts, but i think it's too early for HD anime sets, at least for me.

Of course it is too early for those. I never even bought sets on DVD. I only buy movies. Paprika on Blu-ray looks fantastic. It's a flawless picture.

Nordisk Film confirmed they are BD only. This may be a way to get Uni movies on BD coz IIRC they publish quite a few of their movies. :D

Count me surprised that the 51GB discs won't need new hardware. Good news for HD-DVD folk.

It has been hinted by some people for a while (Koster from AVS and I think Amir did when the TL-45 was first announced).

Of course, it's still a rumor until Toshiba officially confirms it themselves.

Do all players have the ablity to update their firmware?

Thats why PS3 is still the best BD-player. :D

Did someone say they were going to add Master Audio support for PS3? o_O

I guess HD-DVD is the better format now if they get the tripple layer to work.

All the BDA needs to do is add a third layer and they are up to 75GB. If its cost effective enough though, I have no idea. :lol

There's a new firmware due soon (I think it was September, actually) which adds 1080p24 support to the Toshiba players that support 1080p, so maybe they'll sneak it into there. Might be short notice unless they've been planning it for a while, though.

I love the way they made it 51GB :lol

Yeah, but Toshiba has some advantages here.

1) Ethernet going into every player.
2) They make every HDDVD player on the market to this point (sans the LG dual format)
3) They make the 51GB disk.

Sony could still do it, but there are more hurdles for them to overcome.

I dont personally think the 51GB disk is that big of a deal to be honest. I never thought 30GB was a handicap to the format at all. Two discs for bonus content is fine if it has to happen. In fact, I think we will still get two discs simply because consumers think 2 discs = better value.

This is simply a war of bullet points, and now HDDVD has (rumored to) taken one of BRDs away... in fairness bitrate is probably BRD's bigger technological edge (I also dont think this really effects anything) but its much harder to explain to J6P than saying "this disk is bigger"

My friend just told me that the latest update on his Toshiba HD-DVD player has a bug in it and it won't allow him to play movies beyond 1080i?

Has anyone else had this happen?
