I think you misunderstand. Javascript != Java.
From that link HDi is a combination of javascript and XML, while BDJ is java.

Just not formally announced yet. They'll be coming.

These are my purchases for the rest of the year:

* Dawn of the Dead (assuming transfer is decent)
* Master & Commander
* Cars
* Ratatouille
* The Die Hard Trilogy
* Independence Day

* The Bourne Ultimatum
* Top Gun
* Transformers
Plus from Warner I want 2001, Blade Runner, and The Shining, probably on HD DVD.

I got my PS3 from Amazon on Thursday and, being a previous HD disc skeptic I have to say I was incredibly impressed. I tossed in "A Scanner Darkly" while I was half asleep and right out of the gate the quality made me perk up and stare attentively and in awe at the colors and clarity. I am a believer now. I am one of those individuals who can quite easily see the difference and quality jump from standard DVD. I even worked on Scanner as an animator and the material looked as good as the source we cranked out. It helps that it was vector-based and can be output at any resolution, but yeah... the final product on my screen was very redeeming. If that's not an endorsement for anyone who can afford this luxury, then I don't know what else can be.

That said, I caught this tidbit this morning: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=487

Sounds like Sin City and Batman Begins are being prepped for the Blu-Ray format. Was this known information?

Blu-ray Exclusives I want

* Black Book (Sony)

HD-DVD Exclusives I want

* Freedom: 2 (Bandai Visual)
* Knocked Up (Universal)
* Transformers (DreamWorks)
* Battlestar Galactica: Season One (Universal)
+ Bourne Ultimatum

Sucks that I'll be missing out on the HD-DVD exclusives, but there's enough crap on Blu-ray (and Blade Runner and Harry Potter) that I want to blow my money on. :D

Warner's been dangling the proverbial carrot in front of Blu Ray owners for awhile now. Supposedly they're waiting for BD-J to be finalized/implemented.

Dual Layer HD-DVD (30 GB) costs more than single layer BluRay (25 GB)

How is that surprising or somehow counterintuitive?? Isn't that how it's supposed to be? And on top of that, I think you're using old information, because I don't think you're accounting for the yield subsidization, since BD 25's yields simply aren't as high as HD30s.

edit:

Once Paramount starts to really pump out content the same way Fox has recently announced, the exclusivity numbers should look more even. Not to mention, Universal released a ton of their catalog titles earlier this year and throughout the summer, so the list isn't as stacked because Fox chose to delay their titles.

neojubei

Will drop pants for Sony.
My lists would look like this:

Blu-ray:

* Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer (Fox) (because it is a comic book movie)
* Edward Scissorhands (Fox)
* Reign Over Me (Sony)
* Scary Movie (Dimension) -if this is the first one, heck yea
* Spider-Man: The High-Definition Trilogy (Sony)

DVD Forum approves 'bigger than Blu-ray' HD DVD

07 Sep 07
Country: China, USA
Source: Online Services/Intelligence/Video and DVD/Updates

The DVD Forum, the international DVD standards authority, has approved a 51 GB single-sided triple-layer HD DVD disc for production. Extension to the HD DVD standard, which was submitted by Toshiba in April, received approval on 31 August 2007. Other recent developments include:

A single-sided triple-layer HD DVD/DVD hybrid (combi) disc, the DVD layer of which would be playable by legacy DVD players, is expected to be approved before the year end.

Our take...
The approval of Toshiba's 51 GB disc is good news for the HD DVD camp, allowing it to compete directly with rival Blu-ray Disc's (BD) dual-layer 50 GB disc. As with the BD50, it is likely to take some time for production yields to reach a commercially viable level. However, once this has been achieved it will arguably eliminate one of the principle reasons behind some studios' support of Blu-ray over HD DVD, thus potentially making it easier for Disney or Fox to adopt a format-agnostic position without losing face. Meanwhile, the development of a triple-layer single-sided hybrid HD DVD/DVD disc will also be welcomed by HD DVD supporters. Both Warner and Universal have been releasing double-sided hybrids in the US for some time but they have yet to use this approach in Europe. Single-sided hybrids (sometimes called 'twin format' discs) offer the same space for promotional printing as traditional optical discs and do not require the consumer to think about which way to put them into the player. Anime title Freedom was released in the US as a single-sided hybrid in June but its capacity (15 GB HD DVD and 4.7 GB DVD) was not sufficient for a major studio release. The approval by the Forum of a triple-layer hybrid might arguably encourage some studios to release certain titles only on HD DVD/DVD hybrids, which could in turn lead to some DVD buyers building up a library of HD DVD titles by default, before making the decision to upgrade to a hi-def video player. So far there have been no indications that the BD camp plans to support hybrid discs.

BD-J looks more daunting huh? Now here's the actual function call that you may need to use 100 times more:

HDi
Code:
document.Menu.style.animateProperty("y","928px;738px",0.5);

BD-J
Code:
openMenu(menu);

It's all about encapsulation and re-use. The more the language has to mature the more libraries available and the less coding will need to be done. There are already BD-J WYSIWYG solutions that require no programing.

Um. And what, you can't encapsulate in the javascript/xml hdi? That seems rather unlikely.

Ignatz Mouse said:
I would think that fact that Java programmers are in abundance (and even still, that's simple code) would make all the difference.

Also one thing that Paramount exec glossed over:

Dual Layer HD-DVD (30 GB) costs more than single layer BluRay (25 GB)

So if that extra space isn't necessary, BluRay is cheaper. Unless you can fit everything in 15GB.

Javascript programmers ain't exactly rare either, and, to be blunt, are better at web-style UIs, which is basically what disc menus are.

They can't. And HD-DVD supporters would rather you forget that BD is technically capable of 200GB discs.

I don't think people will stand for that if that means paying next gen prices for standard def content... Talk about lack of choice.

And are these triple layer discs compatible with current hardware? And would this move not legitimize what the Blu-ray camp has been saying, flexibility with high capacity?

All Toshiba needs now is to up the current bandwidth, and their on par with Blu-ray. :/

These new triple layer discs will work on current players I imagine? Otherwise I dont see the point in alienating early adopters. But hey if sony can shaft early adopters ( profile 1.1 and 2.0) toshiba can too!
With all things being equal now (except for player prices, interactive features) it all boils down to studio support? Or in Gaf's case whether you love sony or not. Or am I over simplifying things?

I highly doubt it. Unless that design spec existed from the beginning, it's not likely to work. Also, TL HD-DVDs are going to lose any sort of price advantage they once held since I doubt you can retrofit existing DVD manufacturing lines to make TL HD-DVDs.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I think it doesn't make any sense to speculate about whether current players can play that, whether Toshiba would use it for movies, or whether they just care for the combo disc aspect of it.

It won't be long now before we're told what the deal is. Toshiba, unlike the BD camp, has been pretty open about the HD DVD standards. Meanwhile, the BD camp has all kinds of compatibility questions hanging for over a year now.

That doesn't mean HD-DVD players are now powered by pixie dust and will have zero compatibility issues. It's quite unlikely that can properly anticipate a unforeseen physical media update two years in advance.

But the films are guaranteed to work with your player whether it is 1.1 compliant or not. These TL HDDVDs have yet to be confirmed to work with older players. Which makes me think this is geared as a mass storage solution.

You're right they haven't been confirmed to work with older players but it would be suicide for Toshiba to start using triple layer discs that dont work on older players so who knows what Toshiba is planning. Having said that I dont really see the benefits/practicality of using them as a mass storage solution.

They know that, they just are hoping that if they keep saying things like "possible" that they can just rely on the idiots who quote pr statements and latch onto soundbytes without actually knowing what they are reading.

If you're talking about HD discs, you couldn't be more wrong. The current HD disc market is mostly enthusiasts who are very well informed. The largest pool of casual buyers would be the large segment of Ps3 owners who know very little about Blu Ray or HD discs in general.

HD in general or is that a jab at HD DVD? Do you really believe that the majority of ps 3 owners who had blu ray forced on them did alot of research. I'm not referring to gaffers as we are for the most part more informed than the general populace.

What's the difference between the two? Honestly, I'm not being difficult, but I can't see the distinction you're trying to make.

Hd in general, do not pull that forced on them bullshit because it is utter crap and the sign of someone who does not have a real argument.
You can't have it both ways, either PS3 users are being forced to buy movies or PS3 users aren't using them to watch movies.
Saying that PS3 users are forced to get bluray is like saying that 360 users are forced to go buy dvds.

VanMardigan

I don't think the argument is that they're forced to buy Blu Ray movies but that they're forced to buy a Blu Ray drive whether they will use it or not.

But you know these arguments don't really belong here, they should be on the gaming side.
