I'd love to pick up Superbad however I wouldn't pay $44 even if I owned a blu ray player. Have Sony lost their minds? I guess I'll be buying the sd version. I'm definitely picking up Knocked Up on hd dvd.

Obviously it won't be a full $45 in stores, but yeah, Sony's skyrocketing MSRPs are baffling. As for Knocked Up, the HD version misses out on quite a lot of the extras that are on the 2-disc DVD and I'm hearing about freezing and stuttering problems with the disc. Oh, Universal...

Warner has some new dates up now:

The Aviator HD/BR - 11/6/07 (not sure if the date was posted before)
The Omega Man HD/BR - 11/27/07
Twister HD/BR - 1/8/08

I believe Universal is charging about that much for the new Bourne movie. Anyways only a chump pays MSRP for these things.

Really? Have Universal lost their minds? Well I guess I wont be buying Bourne Ultimatum at least not at that price. That's why I usually buy at Frys they have Amazon pricing without having to wait for your movie to ship

I just checked. Bourne is $40 and its a combo still $5 too expensive. $44 for Superbad is even more ridiculous.

I dont know what you're trying to get at. I do buy at Frys. Does that somehow preclude me from commenting on MSRPs on a message board? If so just let me know. Oh and welcome back

are the grindhouse flicks even planned for hd format? After a week of owning my hd dvd player, I regret even investing any money in that bs. Seeing companies delaying by 6 months a release is fucking bs. I think i'm going to dump it on ebay and stick with dvds for a few years.

Also the price of movies is way too high. Oh well.

I don't think you did enough research before hand. Or that you bought your player for movies not even out yet. Really, the best way to enjoy either format is to have a Netflix/BB account and rent a bunch of movies until a release hits that you want to buy. Same with dvd. Plus you get a dvd upscaler for buying the standalones. It works out. I use my HD DVD player as my dvd player when there aren't any HD DVD's for me to watch. The Heroes set has kept it busy recently, plus there seem to be a lot of HD releases coming up.

My gf and I enjoyed it quite a bit, I liked it enough to buy season 2.

Death Proof HD DVD is coming out before the end of the year in the UK if you really want it.

Good news for EWS on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

Unrated version.

I think this was mentioned way back when Warner confirmed the special editions were coming in the first place. It's strange that they're even bothering to include the rated version on the disc, though.

More interesting - to me, at least - is that it's looking very likely that they're providing the significantly different UK cut of the Shining alongside the US cut.

Thumbs up on the series. The PQ is pretty disappointing considering that the material is only two years old. But definitely worth the money.

so when are like classic disney movies coming (lion king, etc)
It took Disney years to even start releasing them on DVD, and considering their retarded moratorium policy (Lion King came out on DVD in 2002 so it won't see another release on any format until 2012) I doubt it'll be for some time yet. Going with their usual timescale the first one we'll see will be Snow White in 2011, unless they still have some platinum editions due that they could make a simultaneous DVD/BD release.

Good news about Braveheart if it's true. While we're talking about historical epics I hope that Universal and Dreamworks, now that they're both in the HD DVD camp, will pull their fingers out and get Gladiator on the release schedule.

So I'm about $100 away from a Ps3, unless I spend half that money on an HD DVD standalone. Have any Toshiba Gen 3 reviews come out? I'm thinking of possibly picking up a Gen 2 device if the price on them drop significantly. The reason is audio, though I'm not an audio whore.

My receiver has "multi channel input" on the back panel. It's one port for each speaker (front, rear, sub, etc.) Is that what I use on a standalone to get TrueHD and DD Plus through analog? It's all quite confusing to me, since I'm mostly in the dark on audio matters.

VanMardigan, dunno if this would help you but theres a deal going on...

Meijer has coupon code meijercomgift for 20% off $50+. The best deals are the game consoles. Thanks PaulG78 & MPoWeRM3.

PlayStation 3 80GB System w/MotorStorm $600 - 20% = $480

from www.slickdeals.net

EDIT: I think it works on HD DVD players too if you want to go that route..Dont think they have gen3 players though.

VanMardigan

yeah, I saw that, and it's a pretty good deal. They don't ship to the VI, though, and they don't have the 60GB console. Right now, Amazon's deal with the two free movies is my best option, but still about $100 too expensive for me.

That's why I'm debating whether to just get an HD DVD standalone and improve my audio.

Yes, those analogue inputs would let you get DD+/TrueHD/DTS-HD through your receiver since all HD DVD players can decode internally. Bear in mind that not all of the Toshiba standalones (I'm thinking specifically of the HD-E1 which I have, and I assume the low-end ones are the same across the board) have the analogue outputs, though.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
yeah, I just read that only the XA2 has multichannel analog out, and that sucker costs the same right now as a Ps3. Let's see if it drops in price after the A35 gets on the market. I guess it's pretty much a wash on price right now on whether to upgrade my audio or get a Ps3.

The only G3 player out right now is the A30, which is exactly the same as the A20 except for the nicer chassis. Same inputs, same Anchor Bay chip and similar loading time (apparently). Some people are still reporting the 1080i to 1080p deinterlacing problem that was also found on the A20.

If you want analog out your only option is the XA2 (but it still costs more than a PS3, at least on Amazon). You'd probably want to wait for the A35 to come out in about a week or so (Oct. 1st) and see if the unit is worth it (it'll also be cheaper). Some people also got lipsynch issues with the analog outs of the XA2, we'll see if the new A35 fixes it. I'm guessing the only real difference between both units will be the chip inside, hence the cheaper MSRP price of the A35.

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/SPV_Records/Music_on_High-Def/Disc_Announcements/Motorhead_to_Rock_HD_DVD_with_Stage_Fright_/987

Already released in Europe, SPV Records says the feature-packed HD DVD edition of Motorhead: Stage Fright' is bound for the States this October.

Documenting a stop on the group's sold-out 2004 tour, 'Stage Fright' showcasing the legendary (and very loud) metal band blasting through over twenty of their best-known songs.

Indie music distributor SPV is pulling out all the stops for its maiden high-def title, which has already been released to rave reviews overseas. Not only will 'Stage Fright' hit HD DVD on October 23 boasting all of the bonus materials included on the previous US-released DVD edition, but it will also include several cutting-edge features exclusive to the next-gen version.

Among the standard-def extras are audio commentary with the band, a full-length documentary with extensive historical interviews, a fan testimonial featurette, slide show and discography.

New to the HD DVD is picture-in-picture video commentary with the band, plus three innovative features never-before-seen on a high-def title (music or otherwise). Utilizing the HD DVD format's HDi authoring environment, 'Stage Fright' will allow users to take their own "snapshots" from the video portion of the concert and create a custom still gallery, as well as arrange their own setlist. Additional web-enabled content features will round out the set.

Tech specs include the complete concert presented in its original 1.78:1 aspect ratio and 1080p video, with DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 surround.

SPV has set a $29.98 list price for the set.

Don't think this was posted before:

http://www.j-oystiq.com/2007/09/22/tgs07-advent-children-gets-dirty-on-blu-ray/

Square's big budget fan service film, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, is heading to Blu-ray and it's going to provide much more than an HD transfer. A new trailer showcased at TGS shows a few new scenes that expand upon the film's storyline. One scene took place in the alleys of Midgar as children afflicted with Geostigma appear to be melting goo. Another sequence shows Sephiroth stabbing Cloud through the chest, skewering him and swinging him like a piece of dead meat. Not only will the updated Blu-ray disc feature new scenes, but new special features that were cut from the original DVD will find their way into the collection, thanks to the spacious capacity of the HD movie format.

But that's not what has us most excited. The fight scenes from the film have been completely re-rendered with a feature we've long waited for: dirt. The always-fashionable Cloud and company will have perfect clothes no more! They'll have to invest in even stronger hair gel to survive the battles that they face. The press release explains it best: "Clothing that gradually dirties through intense combat, faces that darken with soot from explosions, and motorbikes pockmarked with gunshots - the Complete edition brings a grittier, dirtier look to the film's nonstop action."

The now-Incomplete edition will now be too clean for the Square Enix hardcore. The added sheen of the HD transfer will only accentuate the dirty details that Square has deemed necessary to include in this re-release. Of course, we can't wait for the next 2160p "Really Complete Edition" which will add even more wrinkles to the character's clothes and subtle acne on their backs.

If anyone's interested I've just seen that Movietyme has the Japanese version of Band of Brothers on HD DVD up for preorder. It's being released there as five individual releases but they're offering all of them for $177.28/£89.99. Direct from Amazon JP they're $34.71 each, not including shipping, which works out as $173.55, so it should be marginally cheaper from Movietyme as they have free shipping.

Subtitles aren't forced and it has English DTS-HD so I'm seriously tempted, but still...that price. Can we get a Western release, please? :(

As annoying as this stupid format is, there is something interesting about the many facets fighting this war. We've got studios, consumer electronics, retailers and finally consumers all waging war on this stupid thing. Boggles the mind.

http://www.twice.com/article/CA6481073.html

Chester Springs, Pa. — Home Theater Specialists of America (HTSA), the $500 million buying group for A/V specialty dealers and installers, has formally confirmed that it is backing Blu-ray Disc technology based on sales trends among its 62 members.

The industry looks to HTSA as an expert for custom home theater, built upon a foundation of the top consumer electronic retailers across the country,” said executive director Richard Glikes. “Based on our member research and observations in the field, it is clear that HTSA customers have made Blu-ray Disc their preferred HD format for movies and other packaged video content.”

http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-newsview.php?id=00739

The specs are in for the Blu-ray version of 'Rush Hour 3,' announced last week for release on December 26 with an SRP of $39.98. The HD DVD version, with identical specs, will arrive sometime early next year.

'Rush Hour 3' will be presented in widescreen 2.35:1 1080p video and offer Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and 6.1 DTS-ES audio options. Unless a last-minute change is made, do not expect to find lossless audio on this release.

Extras exclusive to the high-def formats will include an enhanced visual commentary and interactive menus. The HD DVD version will include an "Internet Connectivity Experience" that will not appear on the Blu-ray version.

Additional extras will be identical to those found on the two-disc standard DVD edition and include a feature-length audio commentary from director Brett Ratner, deleted scenes with audio commentary from director Brett Ratner, Le Rush Hour Trois Production Diary featurette, gag reel, and theatrical trailer.

New Line has issued a pair of covers as they did with their first high-def title 'Hairspray,' so we're guessing there may be a lenticular slip-cover involved here as well. This assumption is pure speculation; we have no official confirmation at this time.

Yeah, there's very little dialogue. I'd definitely import it if I had a HD-DVD player.

Sony has the rights to it in North America, I'd love to see this get a Blu-ray release.

yea you're right, I should've looked more carefully on IMDB. I just saw the list of production companies and it's Dreamworks+Dreamworks SKG. I guess since the Sopranos is both then this should be both as well. I would buy this day one.

Simpsons movie is announced for Blu-ray.

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that they will be bringing 'The Simpson's Movie' to Blu-ray on December 18th, day and date with the DVD release. The disc will be authored using BD-Java, and feature an AVC video encode and DTS-HD MA audio track. Extras include numerous commentaries, deleted scenes, and promotional video - all in high definition.

That movie was a total disappointment, and I don't see how it can benefit from HD anyway. Probably the least HD worthy movie out of all the hits this year.

The movie you're looking for is Knocked Up. Animation always looks great on HD.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing-- animation looks kinda assy is SD on an HD set, looks very sharp and cool in HD.

This is a big reason I want 2001 in HD-- the end animation sequence, which has jaggies even in SD on my old TV.

OTOH, I figure the Simpsons movie for a rent. I haven't watched the show in over a decade.

I'm not sure how you can call it a disappointment. If you like the Simpsons then you would like the movie as it's pretty much a grand 90 minute episode. If you don't like the Simpsons then you would know not to watch the movie.

Also I think you are incorrect about the benefit of HD. Animated and CG movies can look amazing in HD. I'd say 28 Days Later would be the least HD worthy movie since it was filmed mostly on SD cameras.

I know CGI and anime does, I'm not so sure about something like the Simpsons. We'll see. And yeah, Knocked Up didn't look that good, but I'm not sure why that matters in this case.

I LOVE the Simpsons, and thought the movie suffered from being surprisingly unfunny and unfocused. It had its moments, but those were the ones in the tv commercials for the most part.
