The Breakup was interesting because it broke the stereotype. I kind of liked it for that. Depressing? Perhaps a bit but it was more realistic IMO.

While I didn't really like the movie I was actually suprised by the ending and was happy that chick flick type movie went away from the conventional happily ever after ending.

I have a tendancy to exaggerate. By excruciatingly depressing, I mean sad. Why type one syllable when you can have nine?

I enjoyed Justin Long and the singing brother, but the dissolution of the relationship didn't sit well with the 'funny.' Oh! Vincent D'Onofrio!

Twilight Zone wasn't in on either format at my BB, and it seems like nobody's been able to find a copy. I wonder what the holdup is.

BUT I did pick up:

Best Buy do not carry all the newest high-def catalog titles unfortunately. How much are the 28s?

I may actually get Twilight Zone on SD DVD simply because catalog titles rarely need HD that much and it'll go with the entire Twilight Zone series set we already have on DVD (got all of the Definitive Edition season sets for $70 due to a Fry's pricing mistake)

you really think so? it's only part of a box set, not a new release.

The listing has a price for RE2 (not the box set) of $38.96, so I take that to mean it will be a separate release as well.

I loved 28 Days later, is 28 Weeks later worth a blind buy? And was it shot in HD?

Not blind-buy worthy. It was decent, but fails to match up with Days. It starts off fucking great though, what an intro! If only the 2nd half could have maintained the quality of it's 1st, it might have surpassed Days.

Yep I'd say it's the best zombie intro ever right next to Dawn of the Dead remake.

I know that, but he said on the last page

Wow, Sony already double-dipping on RE2 for Blu-ray? That's a bit bold.
and I'm just asking him where he sees the double-release listed at. I'm asking because there wasn't a link provided for the release information so maybe he saw something that I didn't.

Sorry, yeah, total screw-up on my part. I read the entry for Extinction, and for some reason my brain told me that that was for part two.

Anyone get Robocop on Blu-ray? I've heard conflicting information about it being either the R-rated or Unrated/NC-17 version.

Amazon lists it as R.

Also my friend got the Spider-Man BRD set last week. Can't get a...detailed...response out of him regarding the transfer quality. He was dodging the question of whether it was good or not.

The Mrs rented The Break Up thinking it would be a hilarious rom-com, as advertised, but it was excruciatingly depressing.
I actually caught it this weekend on one of the HD movie channels, i thought it was very depressing.
I guess you could say its accurate since women are crazy, and Jennifer Aniston shows that, breaking up with a guy then wanting him back the whole time.

Stardust was really good, I really enjoyed Robert Dinero's performance, shame it did so bad at the box office because it deserved better.

Speaking of Robert DeNiro....

I finally watched my copy of The Untouchables last night. A few comments:

One, the film is gorgeous. I don't know one tier from another, but watching this in HD was a treat. I work on the street right where a lot of outdoor scenes happen, so it was pretty cool seeing my office building in my living room.

The film itself has some ups and downs. I don't think it has aged well. A couple of the action sequences, including the famed Union Station scene, come off as very stylized and unreal in a bad way. OTOH, Connery is excellent, and a lot of the "quiet" scenes are extremely well done. And the rooftop chase is great.

Anyway, it's Paramount, so if you have BluRay only, want this, and see it-- grab it while you can.

I just watched the opening sequence of Weeks - holy fuck it looks great (but grainy during darker scenes) in HD.
"Weeks" got loads of aerial shots, they must be amazing in HD!

Please keep us posted!

Just picked up Edward Scissorhands, 28 Days, and 28 Weeks.
Will give impressions soon.
I was nicely surprised by Evil Dead 2 and very impressed with Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Still have Halloween and Dawn waiting to be opened and picking up From Hell tonight.

I'm pretty sure there's a review for this, and while I don't remember details, it was reviewed as really good transfer for all three movies. Look up reviews, they'll probably tell you much more detail than a friend could.

Here's one review (it's not the same one I read originally):

I was going off the Amazon listings, sorry.

Surprising that Fox did that after putting jack shit on Robocop.

The ONLY copy of Robocop I have is the old Criterion DVD. I'll probably just get the two-disc DVD Fox just did back in August since the Blu-Ray is completely bare bones.

Yeah, it sucks that Fox put nothing on Robocop. But, I never owned it on DVD, so I'll make the sacrifice.

I wonder if Mana will make any comments if a glowing review of Spider-Man comes in.

So transparent.

?

I didn't say it was bad. My friend just wouldn't give details on if it was good or bad.

And I'd take HD Digest more seriously in reviewing a 1080p transfer than a site that doesn't review it on a 1080p set. It's like reviewing a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack through 2.0 speakers.

OokieSpookie said:
Well I can not fault him if his criticism is of the movies themselves :lol
(Don't kill me!)

The only one I want is the second one and it isn't being sold separately.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
I liked the first 2 Spiderman movies, but I'd like all three on HD. Same situation with Shrek and PoTC. The third ones were easily the worst movies on all of those franchises, but not bad enough where I wouldn't want to own them to complete the storylines.

Shrek are all bad. I want Over the Hedge and Antz. Everything else DWA has ever touched can go away. Its all horrid.

POTC has 1 good movie, 1 bad movie and one horrid movie.

Spiderman 1 I loved at first, but it didnt age that well. I would still buy it, but some of the goofy stuff in the beginning and the bridge scene (dont mess with NYers) makes me cringe.

Spiderman 2 is filled with all kinds of win and is completely awesome. Its got some goofyness as well, but is toned down a bit. Much like the first, the badguys are developed well, you actually care about them and their story makes alot of sense.

Spiderman 3 is absolutely horrid. Unwatchable. Spiderman vs. Green Goblin 2 would have been a great movie. The stuff with harry trying to ruin peters life had great potential... there had to be a better way to do it.

but amnesia, venom, sandman and all kinds of emo stupidity ruined this movie. You could tell they just didnt have the guts to make a movie so similar to the first so they just added on undeveloped filler in hopes of making it "exciting".

Also: Knocked Up>Superbad>40 Year Old Virgin.
Anyone seen Juno with Michael Cera and Ellen Page?

I've seen 40y/o, Superbad, and Knocked Up. I haven't seen Juno yet, but it has received a lot of praise, notably from Ebert as well.

I would say:

40y/o Virgin (the first of its kind in these types of comedies) > Juno (total guess) > Knocked Up > Superbad (I didn't like this movie that much, lack of continuity)

I only put Juno second because Knocked Up didn't have the same effect on me as 40y/o Virgin so I would be surprised if I don't enjoy Juno more than Knocked Up and Superbad.

Ranking a movie you never seen is a bit....weird. And why would you rank it? The whole point of ranking Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad is they are Apatow Production movies.

Juno has nothing to do with Apatow. And it's more of a drama film.

Lionsgate Declares 'War' on Blu-ray

In the studio's first next-gen title announcement of the new year, Lionsgate will debut the high-octane action-thriller 'War' on Blu-ray this January.

Starring Jet Li as a rogue assassin and Jason Statham as the FBI assigned to track him down, expect lots of flexing muscles and slow-mo body blows when 'War' drops on Blu-ray and standard-def DVD day-and-date on January 1.

Tech specs for the $32 million-grossing slugfest include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, and in what is becoming a much-welcome trend on Lionsgate's Blu-ray releases, an uncompressed PCM track in full-blown 7.1 surround.

Fantastic image detail in places, a little soft in a few scenes. 90% of the film looks really good, IMO but some bits did look a bit poor

EXCELLENT sound quality though :D
