It's lame.

This isn't a takeover thread anymore. It should be discussion on upcoming releases, Gaffer impressions/reviews on movies already out, hardware talk, etc. But as long as you guys enjoy it, carry on I guess. Format warz lawl!

I just saw Pan's Labyrinth is coming to the US in HD formats, YAY. Was not happy on the DVD release when there was no HD version. I know there's an import version but need subs.

This was something I was looking up when Paprika was announced for Blu-Ray. Anyone have any information on where to find out something like this?

First tragedy, then farce.
whatt is actually stopping uni from releasing the spielberg movies other than keeping him happy?

they are obviouslly sitting on encodes since most of these are allready on their tv channel.

does amblin still own rights to them?

Universal Japan prematurely touts Spielberg HD-DVD
Just a quick note to put a kibosh on some news that circulated online this weekend: An image from a presentation held by Universal Japan has been lighting up the Internet with talk of some major Spielberg films coming to HD-DVD, top-tier titles such as “Jaws,” “E.T.,” “Jurassic Park” and more.

Thing is, all of this is news to Amblin/DreamWorks who have a say in the format and issuance of Spielberg’s work on any home video format. Unfortunately, this is the second time in less than six-months that the very anxious HD-DVD group (of which Universal is a very key member when it comes to software content) have prematurely announced Spielberg titles coming to HD-DVD.

At this time, there are no official plans to release any Spielberg-directed titles to the HD DVD format, except for tomorrow’s release of “Twilight Zone The Movie” (a feature that includes the short Spielberg film “Kick the Can”).

Beyond “Twilight Zone” (that will be released in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray), Spielberg fans have November 13th’s high-def debut of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” to look forward to exclusively on the Blu-ray format. Beyond that, any other talk of Spielberg films on high-def at this time is premature, no matter the source, even Universal.

Spielberg/Uni should just get together and release those delicious films in both formats and get it over with.

Sorry to break topic here, I'm a recent HDTV and PS3 owner. The first Blu-Ray I tried to play just didn't work at all. I've got a 60g PS3, and the film was The Host. My second film (Black Book) worked just fine.

What's the deal?
oh, and Paprika is so freaking mine.

Check the disc? I've played the Host on my 60 GB PS3 and it worked fine...

Does your PS3 work with other BD films?

I liked Superbad more then 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up. I may have to rent this.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the extras which will be included with the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Superbad', due on store shelves December 4th. Sony has confirmed that this will be a two disc release, which gives us the sneaking suspicion that all the extras will be in stunning 1080p high definition. Also, the Blu-ray will feature the "unrated" cut of the film which was too raunchy for theatrical release.

* Pineapple Express: Exclusive First Look
* Deleted and Extended Scenes
* Gag Reel
* Line-O-Rama
* Cop Car Confessions – A Ride Along with Clark County's Finest
* Making-of Superbad
* Original Table Read 2002 – Seth Rogen reads for the part of “Seth”
* Dancing Title Sequence
* Vag-tastic Voyage
* Cast Audition Footage
* Press Junket Meltdown
* The Music of Superbad
* "Everybody Hates Michael Cera" – The Unfortunate True Story :lol
* On-Set Diaries
* "Snakes on Jonah" Featurette
* Michael's Voicemails from Jonah
* TV Safe - Watch Jonah Hill try to record alternate "safe" lines appropriate for television
* Table Reads
* Optional audio commentaries by Judd Apatow, Seth Rogren, Greg Mottola, Evan Goldberg, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse

And exclusive to the Blu-ray release will be the "Superbad Supermeter" which will keep tally of all the lewd and crude lingo in the film.

For me it was a tie between superbad and knocked up and forty year old virgin lagging behind, i have the unrated cut on DVD and it just seems to drag on. I would have to see superbad and knocked up again to decide.

Definitely pick up superbad though.

40YOV and Knocked Up are a little more romantic comedies while Superbad doesn't try to sap it up as much. :)

i love all the movies, own 40yov and knocked up on hd-dvd, but i'll definitely pick up superbad on bru-ray.

superbad > knocked up > 40 year old virgin

I love all 3 but knocked up (followed by virgin) are better, they have more heart. Superbad is all comedy and feels more immature compared to the others.

RE isn't the first PIP Blu Ray. Pan's Labyrinth is shipping with it this year.

Also: Knocked Up>Superbad>40 Year Old Virgin.

Yep. Knocked Up and 40 Year Old had heart, while Superbad (which is still funny, mind you) was severely lacking it.

Wow, Sony already double-dipping on RE2 for Blu-ray? That's a bit bold.
you really think so? it's only part of a box set, not a new release.

I'm getting the RE box set (eh, why not) as well as Con Air and The Rock. Where's Armageddon, though?

Exactly. Superbad made me laugh a lot but I kind of got over the pure-goofy "guy" comedy when I was like 16. You need some depth and the others had that. The characters in Superbad are basically cartoon characters, there is no reason to feel for them.

Rogen started working on the script when he was 13, which probably explains the lack of emotional depth.

The Rock is the Citizen Kane of the genre.

Perhaps most subtly demonstrated when Connery crushes a loveBug at the corner of Haight Ashbury with the Humvee.

Did you rent or buy The Host? If you rented it, it could just be scratched.

What country do you live in and is your PS3 a native of that country? Some Blu-ray discs still have region codes (there are 3 regions).

If none of the above and nothing at all happens when you put the disc in the PS3, the disc was probably screwed up in pressing and is defective.

Funny, I visit this thread because I like seeing two sides in a stalemate being passive aggressive...not HD-DVD and BluRay, but the fans of each.

The battle lines have been long drawn. There are no new contentions. We're just waiting for results to roll in.

It is however funny to see the occasional SD troll come in and get slapped down.

I must see it again, in HD. You are hereby absolved of your sin of superiority.

Fuck Heart. :p Seriously, these comedies with love stories are so annoyingly formulaic, I'd prefer just straight up dick jokes then a sad attempt at: slacker boy meets girl, girl changes slacker boy into a charming young man and they live happily ever after.

The perilous new direction of the slacker-striver genre reduces the role of women to vehicles. Their only real function is to make the men grow up. That’s why they’re all so earnest and bland—so nice, so good.

It does apply. In virign carrel sold off all of his geeky possesions because he finally matured and used the money to get married and live happily ever after.

Knocked Up is about a loser becoming a mature guy, Virgin is about a geek/loser becoming a mature guy.

hmmmmm.............if you put it that way. I'm not sure how you can enjoy films, period, if they're overanalyzed like that. I thought the two movies were very different, but I guess you can take ANY two movies in a specific genre and apply top-level stuff to make them appear similar.

I haven't seen Knocked Up yet, but 40yov was hilarious.

Sony Unveils 4X Blu-ray Disc Writer Drive Cuts Burning Time in Half from Previous Model
SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Electronics today announced its second generation internal Blu-ray Disc(TM) (BD) writer drive for the computer aftermarket, which boasts 4X BD-R and 16X DVD+R recording speeds.

The new BWU-200S model cuts BD-R burning time by half compared to the first generation model, allowing for a full 50GB BD-R disc to be recorded in about 45 minutes. It also features improved DVD burning speeds, making it a multi-format combo burner that eliminates the need for more than one drive in a system.

The drive comes with CyberLink BD Solution software that provides a comprehensive application for capturing, authoring, editing, burning and viewing high-definition personal content captured in the native HDV 1080i format from an HDV camcorder. In addition, the software supports recording on DVDs and CDs, as well as playback of DVDs recorded in the AVCHD format.

The BWU-200S drive can record up to 50GB of data for random access storage and backup on BD-R (write once) or BD-RE (rewritable) discs, or up to 230 minutes of high-definition HDV 1080i video on a BD-R/RE 50GB disc. It also supports recording on standard single layer 4.7GB DVD+R/+RW/RAM discs, 8.5GB DVD+R double/dual layer discs, and CDs.

The internal drive features a Serial ATA (SATA) interface and standard 5.25-inch form-factor for easy installation inside a desktop PC with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP or Windows Vista(R) software.

"Consumers and professional videographers alike can enjoy the huge storage capacity to record and experience high-definition video with our Blu-ray Disc drive," said Bob DeMoulin, marketing manager for branded storage products in Sony Electronics' IT Products Division.

The new drive is supported by Adobe(R) Encore(R) CS3 that now comes bundled with Adobe Premiere(R) Pro CS3 software, providing video production professionals with another option for outputting high-definition video on a Blu-ray Disc with MPEG-2 or H.264 compression.

"Advanced optical storage technologies, such as Blu-ray Disc technology with its vast capacity compared to DVD technology, will be key enablers for next generation PC applications like HD personal video content and high- definition TV recording," said Wolfgang Schlichting, research director for removable storage at IDC. "Sony's many innovations in optical storage have prepared the company to be a leader in the Blu-ray Disc writable market."

Availability and Pricing

The BWU-200S drive will be available directly from Sony at sonystyle.com next month for about $600. Pre-orders are now being accepted.

It is difficult to enjoy a lot of movies when the formula is so apparent but it gives you a greater appreciation for movies that dare to be different (Hot Fuzz was excellent). To be fair, I like Knocked Up and 40YOV better then most of the recent slacker-boy romantic comedies, but I still prefer Superbad for the shameless fun without the heavy attempt at 'heart' (even though it is there with the theme of friendship).

The Breakup was interesting because it broke the stereotype. I kind of liked it for that. Depressing? Perhaps a bit but it was more realistic IMO.

I own it and it a fantastic movie. My wife and I love it. The dinner scene with the singing brother is hilarious. Plus it's based in Chicago where we met. Yeah, the argument scene was VERY tough to watch (mostly because its dead on), but the way the movie plays out is quite funny as well as long as you realize that relationship is over.

As far as the IQ, I found the dinner scene had a strange look to it, almost out of focus. The outdoor scenes looked great, though. Overall, though, its a pretty mediocre transfer. Way better than the dvd, of course, but not as sharp as I'd like it to be.

I also own You, Me, and Dupree and Owen Wilson is very funny in that as well. I'm a sucker for most comedies with Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Vince Vaughn.

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
I really enjoyed both but Superbad>Knocked Up imho. I haven't seen 40 year old virgin maybe I'll pick it up today since there's nothing I want releasing today.
