which movie is better in terms of the overall HD plus sound experience, tranformers or hot fuzz?

and are there any hd dvd deals going on?

You know, with regards to the whole digital argument, one of the reasons I buy cds is for the nice packaging with thick booklets. When I open HD discs that don't even have a pamphlet and feel like a generic empty case with a disc in it...I do start caring less about owning the physical copy.

They need to work on HD packaging. The few dvds I do buy (mainly from Japan) have thick booklets and are great quality packages.

They had them, but I dunno, you really think the cost of $24.99+tax+shipping+week wait for item to arrive is cheaper/faster than ordering online?

I totally agree about the packaging.
I mean at least crappy dvds had a scene selection card in it or something

Are they available in stock somewhere online?

Pre-friday preview:

On the high-definition disc front, "Transformers" was the No. 1 HD DVD seller for the week, while on the Blu-ray Disc charts the first two "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies returned to the two top spots five months after their initial release

I checked around Shining and Clockwork Orange a bit.

Shining looks really nice. Source material is near pristine quality and the transfer is excellent besides being a little soft. The colors jump off the screen with the reds/blues that the kid/mom wear and though the softness keeps skin from looking ultra-detailed, the clothing still looks pretty detailed. For the film's age I think it looks great and since it's my favorite Kubrick film I'm stoked.

Clockwork Orange looks a lot worse IMO. Once again the source material is near pristine with none of the grain and stuff the old Full Metal Jacket had, but the transfer looks even softer than The Shining and really lacks that sharp HD quality. I'm sure if I had the dvd and compared it, the HD version would look better, but I doubt the jump is that high. Forgot how awesome the soundtrack was, and it comes across pretty good (audio on Shining is pretty old/weak/mono-ish, dialogue here is as well but music is pretty strong).

Assuming that FMJ got the same source material remaster to remove all the faults, the new FMJ is probably waaaaay better than the old one. These transfers are very clean.

Warner Home Video shipped a couple of titles to me. I ordered all of the Kubrick titles and got FMJ and EWS today. I want my other titles you punks!

Well, one of them is an FX packed thrillride, full of spectacle and bombast, and the other is a funny comedy set in an English village. So experientially, compressed audio or no, it's Transformers by a country mile.

Does this mean Pirates sold more than Transformers? :lol

edit: nevermind, I noticed it said BD charts. But still, I can't wait till friday.

Yeah it goes without saying that Transformers will be the #1 title over all, but it will be interesting to see if the volume of blu ray can counter the record sales of Transformers.
Now someone mentioned something which is true, and that is that no single week of sales in either format has ever been at the level of transformers but less one title so all and all I wish it was friday to see.

You're expectations are little off base..

190k would be more than most movies sell combined in most weeks. If that's a real number I expect it to be like 90% transformers, 10% everything else.

Thanks for all of the info StoOgE. I've noticed that my tv automatically switched to 'Expand' mode (1:1)when I set it to HDMI. That explains a lot.

ok i hate this HD DVD promotion. these people get like a million movies for free whereas i only got 3 for free back in july. i'm thinking of going out and buying it again and just selling the drive on ebay for a ~30-40% loss.

You have to remember though as has been mentioned a few times, there were a mass of bluray buy one get one sales as well as the circuit city gimmick so you never know.
(I also expect 190k to end up being the shipped total with the reality coming in at 160k even though it is not that much different)

Edit: I have to say too that the fact that there is any doubt of HD winning the week with a figure like that says alot for the BR/HD situation.

Well.. I got none when I bought it last November (well, King Kong), so don't feel too bad.

While I agree that Transformers is the number one choice here, I've been curious about the sound quality of Hot Fuzz in that last half hour. I think it would make a well-tuned sound system scream.

I don't particularly care for the numbers game, prefer BR, and I still predict HD "winning the week" by a larger margin than that...say...anywhere in between 56/44 to 100/0

Good GOD, that deal at Best Buy is NUTS. Definitely going down there and picking up another player and Heroes (which I'd been considering getting for awhile). Amazing.

Damn, I already bought Babel and The Italian Job and have naturally no desire at all to see Aeon Flux. Oh well, I'm sure I could re-sell Babel somewhat easily.

I will make the hd people a bet.
If HD wins the week I will go neutral before the weekend is out.
If not, I stay true blue and wait for hd to die :lol

So you really want to pay $180 for heroes, you're saying?

I'll get Heroes, 300, Transformers and at least 4 decent new movies for $180. I can then sell the player, King Kong and another disc for probably 75-100 bucks.

Heck, I could trade in the player and King Kong to EB for 20% extra credit towards Mario Galaxy (plus the extra 10% from my EDGE card). This will work out quite well. :D

So basically you'll pay about the same as you would if you just bought Heroes, 300, Transformers off Amazon without all the hassle.

Ok, this might be a little long, but this will be very good information for those with a 360 HD DVD add-on and to those considering picking one up with those insane deals:

I put in Transformers earlier this evening, connected to Xbox Live. As expected, the loading screen (now confirmed to be a cookie download) appeared. It took about a minute to download. I guess it depends on your network connection and Dreamwork's server situation to determine just how long you have to wait. The movie played fine. The second time I played the movie, the loading screen took about 5 seconds and then the movie loaded fine.

Naturally, when the wife gets home, I booted up the movie and it froze on the loading screen. Reset the console, and another lock-up. The entire console locks up, meaning you can't exit to the Xbox 360 dashboard. I disconnected my wifi adapter, rebooted my console and booted up the movie. No loading screen, and the movie loaded up just fine. So, after watching the movie, I decided to tinker, and I've come up with some great solutions to this problem:

Solution #1: Disconnect your console from your network. Works like a charm, but unfortunately you won't be logged on to Xbox Live to download demos, trailers, etc. in the background. Not the best solution but good in a pinch.

Solution #2: Boot up your console, and either disconnect from your network or load up a non-web enabled movie. After the movie starts to play, hit the "Display" button on your media center remote, then head to "HD DVD Network Settings". There, uncheck the box titled "Enable Network Access". From this point forward, you can load up any web-enable movie and the cookies won't load, thus preventing the console from locking up and allowing you to watch the movie without issues. The downside to this method is that you won't be able to execute any of the web-enabled extras on the new HD DVD titles with those features, including 300, Freedom Vol. 1-2, Transformers, Knocked Up, etc.

That's where the best solution comes in:

Solution 3: Boot up your console, and either disconnect from your network or load up a non-web enabled movie. After the movie starts to play, hit the "Display" button on your media center remote, then head to "HD DVD Network Settings". There, make sure "HD DVD Network Settings" is checked to allow web-enabled access, but in the "Cookies" section, select "Decline all cookies". This will allow you to access the web enabled content, and at the same time block the cookie loading when you boot up the movie, preventing any lock up issues.

Now, I tested Transformers with the cookies blocked and I was able to still download the widget with the robot life bars, GPS locations, character info, etc. I'll test it further to see if 300's web-enabled extras like sharing your edition of the movie is affected by blocking the cookies. I did test this on Knocked Up, and it booted up fine without any loading screens, though I haven't tried registering with Universal to use that disc's web features. Let me know if you have any issues, but I think solution #3 is a real winner right now. I'll update once I get to do more tests.

Yeah I was reading that around, and the solutions are good.
If anything I want to go with a stand alone, but the Heroes deal is damned good.
What I am actually thinking of doing ( do not kill me mods it is not what you think) is do the deal and then return the add unopened toward a stand alone in a week or two.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
That's a fine deal if you don't care about King Kong. Also, if you pick a gen 3 Toshiba standalone, you get two more movies in the box, 300 and Bourne Identity. So if you're thinking of doing that (and you're able to pull it off), don't pick either of those movies up with your add-on.

so you ccould (possibly) get a gen 3 player + 10 movies if bb lets you return the add on.

check out this slick dealer...

attachment.php

now that you can get 2 free HD DVD's on top of Heroes Season 1, seems the best buy system made a boo boo and is letting people get boxed sets...

If I had an XBox 360 and didn't own Heroes I would definitely jump on this deal... I already have Heroes though, so even if I get one in anticipation of one day owning an XBox doesn't seems worth it right now... also, I'd feel a little guilty trying to sneak off with boxed sets knowing that is not the Best Buy's intention (despite hating their corporate policies and they way they screw consumers)...

403 - Verboten

found the thread though. the bad news is that the BB I shop at is the one in the wiki thing in the second post. Good thing I know one of the managers there...hopefully this is still operational tomorrow morning - I could use a few more free movies.

edit again: never mind. the HD-DVD player is at the BB, Ultimate Matrix is at the store, but Heroes isn't. the store Heroes is at doesn't have the player. ugh.

I wonder what's up with the lack of subs?

I can understand Bebop as Sony might have a lock on the English sub/dub, but Escaflowne? It's almost like they found out *gasp* people imported their earlier ones and it scared them off because Japan is so anti-export.

Without subs I'm tempted to wait and see if these are coming to the US since I can't watch them with friends. If there's never any US version I'd get everything except F91...though still might get F91. Would rather have Endless Waltz :(

Hey, what's the best deal you can get for buying a PS3 Blu-ray player in terms of free movies?

I need to get one for my brother for x-mas and figure I will grab the $400 model. When do I need to get it by in order to be eligible for the free movie deals?

Wait for the 40gb to hit, it comes with Spiderman 3 and then you have the 5 free movies ( with actual decent movies ) or at Bestbuy.com you can get the 60 ( for full bc ) + heavenly sword or a second controller + the 5 movie deal

As far as I know the movies go until the end of the year

If you buy between October 1 and Jan 31 pick from :

1 Prestige - Wild Hogs- Pirates of the Caribbean
2 Swordfish - Superman - Full Metal Jacket
3 Stir of Echoes - American Psycho - Devil's Rejects
4 Patriot- SWAT-Ultraviolet
5 Chain Reaction- Omen666-Flight of the Phoenix-Species-Hart's War-The Last Waltz

Thanks. The Spiderman 3 (even though it sucks it should be a nice showoff piece) + free on the 40gig sounds like the way to go.

Yeah as a comic fan for like 20 years I hated it, but it is one of those movies that friends are always asking me when I am getting so they can come over

Does anybody know a rough release date for Kill Bill 1/2 Blu ray? I heard somewhere they were supposed to be released this year but they don't show on any release schedule.
