I bought 2001 last night at Best Buy on impulse.

I got home late, so I didn't watch the whole thing, just the opening and closing sequences.

Wowwowowowowowow.

I don't care what format you prefer, *this* is what HD media is all about.

So basically you'll pay about the same as you would if you just bought Heroes, 300, Transformers off Amazon without all the hassle.
According to Amazon (not counting shipping):

Heroes - $70
Transformers - $27
300 - $28
5 free movies (let's say $15 each bought separately) - $75

Total: $200 of free fucking movies for a $195 player (after tax), which can be easily sold on eBay or Craigslist for $100. That means you spend about $100 and easily get $200 worth of movies. I think that's a shit hot deal even if you already own the add on.

In fact, I think I'm going to Best Buy this weekend. :D

you may have just convinced me to do it. The two free movies (in store) can be anything right? Someone let me know if BB lets you return the player after the fact. That would be the best case scenario (even if store credit).

Edit: Nevermind. I own all the movies on the 5 free deal that I actually want.

Man Walmart+ no HDMI/component in the box=at least 60% of people that buy the $198 player watching over composite:(

Anyway I was at Target last night and saw they have tripled the size of their blu section, HD DVD was still the same size though.

If you haven't returned anything at Walmart without receipt recently, you could probably get the whole $190ish bucks back, especially since you won't be cutting out the UPC code out of the box for those 5 free movies (infact, not even opening the box and keeping it brand new).

That's like 2 new titles + Heroes season 1 for free, ain't it?

I saw something similar in my local Wal-Mart and thought it would be discussed.

Yeah, holy crap. I read on AVS something about every Wal-Mart is getting 60 Toshiba HD-A2s, they're arriving now. For a cool $200. Word is that perhaps Tosh kept some lines going to manufacture A2s especially for WallyWorld and Costco this holiday season.

Don't know if that's true, but several posters over there have confirmed that A2s are landing at $198 in Wal-Marts across the country.

On the one hand, this is big for HD DVD. On the other, I'm not convinced Wal-Mart shoppers give a damn about high-def players and media. Unless there's a nice display to show the thing in action, and even then--are those shoppers even looking for anything other than $9.98 DVDs?

The other problem is that, at least in the Wal-Marts around here, the new floorplan seems to devote more space to Blu-ray movies than HD (by about a 3:2 margin). Are people really going to buy a new HD player for a format that's seen as having fewer movies?

There are a lot of unknowns here, so anything can happen. It's positive news for HD DVD that Tosh is getting these players into WallyWorlds so far in advance of the holidays, but it may not mean much if they don't get a pretty big marketing push, and soon.

edit: Another problem for HD DVD. Looking at that mostly blue shelf of movies at my local Wal-Marts, not only are there fewer red cases, but several of the HD DVD movies are substantially ($5 or more) more expensive than their Blu-ray counterparts. Credit the combo discs for that. I enjoy the convenience, but combine the smaller shelf space with the higher prices, and I don't think that looks very compelling to the average consumer, $198 players or no.

That is nothing but positive news for HD DVD. We don't know just how much of an impact it will have, but I think that we can all agree that this is a good move for the HD DVD camp.

I have to say that Transformers on HD-DVD is .....WOW, just friggin' wow!! I was blown away by the quality of the video and audio. It was just amazing to watch this on my 61' DLP in 1080p with my nice home theater setup.

I picked up the XBox360 HD-DVD add-on last month and wanted to inform people to make sure they send in the correct form for the five free DVDs. There is a specific form (which you can get from XBox.com) for the XBox360 add-on. I used the one for the Toshiba HD-DVD player (the one the rep at the store gave me), and I got my package mailed back to me stating I used the incorrect form?! (I was like WTF?!). So I went online and found the XBox360 form and re-submitted. Just wanted to save others the pain of going through the tedious paperwork process. Still waiting to hear back.

2001: A Space Odyssey?

Nothing really big on my horror plate. There aren't a lot of horror films I'll watch more than once, so I rarely buy them, even if they are good.

I still haven't bought 28 Days Later on DVD, for instance, and that's one of my favorites.

I suppose I may watch 28 Weeks Later. I haven't seen it yet.

Yeah I actually only buy 1-3 horror movies a year all in October for Halloween. The original plan was to get 2 or 3 out of 28 Weeks Later, The Shinning, Evil Dead 2, Dawn or Day of the Dead (original), and Halloween, but I don't really keep up with horror movies that much (my girlfriend doesn't like them thus I don't watch them with her) so I didn't know if maybe there was anything new really worth it .

I rented Vacancy and it's a pretty good horror/suspense braindead movie in the same vibe as the late 70's/early 80's Motel Hell era horror flicks.

Which means it's dumb but entertainingly creepy.

jjasper said:
I need some suggestions with Halloween coming up what horror/thriller movies are people planning on watching in HD?

Evil Dead 2, Halloween, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Day of the Dead, Masters of Horror ( the one with Imprint)...or if you are a gore hound you have Saw 3, Hostel and Hostel 2, Devil's Rejects...so many choices out there.

Edit: actually Species and Blood and Chocolate weren't terrible either

Becuase of the age of the film, I was skeptical. I'm glad I went for it.

I only have 1080i (720p) native projector, but I am certain I've never seen it look this good.

Where is the Best Buy deal listed?

I just checking out the Weekly Ad at Best Buy... and here is what I see...

Buy any HD DVD and get 300 and Bourne Identity instantly for free... does that include the X-Box 360 add-on?

Buy the X-Box 360 add-on and get the Heroes box set free...

Now... you also get the 5 free movies...

Why are people listing box sets for Matrix and Planet Earth too?

Any links?

Yeah, it really is. I'll probably pick one of these up this Christmas. Format neutral for me, I guess.

The deal is supposed to be Xbox 360 add on get Heroes set for free there is a supplemental bonus of 2 HD-DVDs for 34.99 or less. However people are taking box sets that have a higher value than 34.99 and are getting them for free, due to some computer glitch perhaps. Whatever you do, don't call, just go in and try it. The WORST deal you will get is add on, heroes box set, 2 HD-DVDs priced under $35, king kong pack in and 5 free hd-dvds via mail in.

Between this deal and $198 HD players at Wal-mart, I'd say things are heating up for HD-DVD. Anyone still think these players are gonna sit on shelves? :lol

Not totally meaning to be a prick about the HD players ( a20 and a30 ) but while looking around all I keep seeing is disk read issues and pq issues.
Has this been resolved in firmware? ( I know an update hit pretty recently)

you also have to remember, people with problems are going to be more likely to post than people without them.

I can tell you the firmware updates on these things are great. Toshiba does a great job in that regard.

If you're looking on AVS or most other AV forums, that's what you'll find. You'll find pretty much the same thing no matter which player you look into (BR or HD DVD). This is because that particular group has the most varied set of equipments and pushing the most cutting edge features, as well as running through just about every conceivable menu option available on any player.

There are hiccups for every player, but for the most part, you should be fine. And new firmwares are released all the time on both sides. Just make sure you get a player that meets your specific requirements.

Crazy Best Buy deal works... just got home from trying it. Xbox 360 HD-DVD player + Heroes S1 + Matrix Trilogy (should have tried the Ultimate edition, but didn't) + Planet Earth = $190.

Now to decide if I'm going to be a jerk and try selling it to make a little bit of a profit, or just return everything to Best Buy. If you or somebody you know wants to get in on the deal (which is pretty damn amazing) before Best Buy no doubt shuts it down, I'd do it soon. (Like, tonight.)

Edit: Love how that Wal-mart Blu-ray is just them cutting the list in half alphabetically.

Does anyone know whether the free box set glitch would work on standalones as well?

I was just wondering that as well. The two free deal is for ANY HD-DVD player, so initially I'd assume that you could. Of course, it's quite possible that this "glitch" is coming from being combined with the free Heroes deal.

I felt bad about trying something too ambitious, and I guess felt I didn't want to push my luck too far, so I ended up with:

HD DVD Player (w/ King Kong) w/ 5-movie mail-in rebate
Planet Earth
Heroes
Transformers

all for $180.

Now to decide what I want to do with this stuff...

I already own Heroes, and don't even have a 360 (nor any interest in owning one anytime soon). I'm gonna try to see if selling my stuff other than Planet Earth and Transformers will break me even and then it's as if I got those 2 titles free...

I was tempted to go for Smallville or Mission Impossible set, but I didn't want to overdo it (guess I should have in retrospect....)

I was kind of the same way... everybody was mentioning Matrix and Planet Earth, so that's what I went with, and like I said, didn't even go with the best Matrix. I really wasn't sure how checkout was going to go, but it couldn't have been any easier to get this thing to go through had I tried. Scan everything, push total, one screen comes up confirming "free Heroes and two additional HD-DVDs", and you're done.

I can only imagine how insane this would be if some of those coming soon HD-DVD box sets (Star Trek, Harry Potter) were available.

you need Heroes for it to work.

and you have no idea how tempting this deal is just to get the movies and sell the player. I need to stay strong and the deal will be over tomorrow and I won't be able to do it. :) :/
