you need Heroes for it to work.

and you have no idea how tempting this deal is just to get the movies and sell the player. I need to stay strong and the deal will be over tomorrow and I won't be able to do it. :) :/

The fact that the drives are not available along with the dvd titles I would want to get anywhere within 45 minutes of my residence is the only thing stopping me from doing just that. hehe

Man, that deal is ridiculous. Will that carry through the holidays? Doesn't anyone know??

If so, I might be buying multiples of that deal as Christmas presents. :)

No it very well may not even last through tonight.

Does it work on the standalone players too? I'll buy one tonight if it does...

Probably not.

yeah - anybody who wants to do the deal, make sure Heroes is the first HD DVD scanned just in case...

They had a TON of HD DVD add-ons and several Heroes in the Best Buy here in college station...

from what I can gather from CAG and Slick Deals, it's the xbox HD-DVD player only and you have to buy Heroes (in other words, it has to be in stock).

also, I managed to go grocery shopping and debate myself out of getting this. No need to spend the money this close to Rock Band's release/Christmas.

Blu-ray Disc maintains its edge in the format war with rival next-gen contender HD DVD, with Blu-ray titles outselling HD DVD titles by a margin of almost two to one in the first nine months of this year.

According to a study by Home Media Magazine’s market research department, consumers bought 2.6 million Blu-ray Discs this year through Sept. 30, and just 1.4 million HD DVD discs.

Blu-ray Disc titles began outselling HD DVD titles early in the year and have consistently maintained an edge, week after week. Even Paramount Home Entertainment’s release of the DreamWorks theatrical blockbuster Transformers exclusively on the HD DVD format didn’t tip the scale last week. Though there was no hot new Blu-ray Disc release, consumers continued to buy more Blu-ray Discs than HD DVDs for the week ended Oct. 21, albeit by a slim 51% to 49% edge. Paramount says Transformers sold 190,000 units its first week in stores, but Home Media Magazine market research and studio estimates puts the actual number of units that sold through to consumers closer to 115,000.

Looks like the Buy1Get1Free sale last week was a masterstroke. 51:49 in favour of Blu-Ray. Real close call... very Hollywood :)

This is the same site that puts out the numbers ever Friday correct? I havn't gotten them mixed up I hope... if it is, then the numbers should be the same as the ones this Friday, but still I wouldn't take these as definitive just yet, but it definitely looks good.

And here is the HD DVD counterpunch:

http://bigtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.co...wal-mart-offers-toshiba-player-for-under-200/

The battle for the future of the high-definition DVD has taken an intriguing turn: For the first time, mega-retailer Wal-Mart (WMT) has begun selling a player for less than $200.

In various online forums, enthusiasts have reported seeing the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player available for $198, significantly less than its common price of $230-$280.

Such low prices could shift momentum in the high-definition format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray, which are vying to be the successor to today’s ubiquitous DVD. Like mainstream DVD players, HD DVD and Blu-ray players accept DVDs. But they also play high-definition discs in their own formats, which look sharper on today’s large, flat televisions.

Microsoft’s Zune: The sequel (Photos 1-4)

“We reduced our HD DVD Toshiba player, the generation-two, to $198 earlier in the week,” Wal-Mart spokeswoman Melissa O’Brien confirmed. “It’s happening now, and that’s really all I can tell you. We don’t give any information on what we’re planning to do for the holidays. We know HD DVD and Blu-ray are going to be popular items this holiday season for some of our customers. … They will be more popular this year than they were in previous years.”

O’Brien said rumors that each Wal-Mart store would stock only 18 units of the Toshiba player were false. “There are no limited quantities for stores or purchases.”

If the cut-rate Toshiba HD DVD players prove especially popular, Wal-Mart’s move could also set up a holiday-season retail showdown with Best Buy (BBY), Circuit City (CC) and others who rely on popular items to lure shoppers into stores. Those other retailers could feel pressure to stock their own low-cost HD-DVD players to drive store traffic.

BOGO's vs $198 standalone players.

Damn you HD DVD/Blu-Ray and your crazy ass deals left and right. I can already imagine the onslaught as we get closer to Thanksgiving and X-Mas. I don't think I can hold off... =c

y'all should be ashamed
51:49? Really? Really?

Man, and the heavy hitters for BD haven't even rolled out. These should be interesting holidays, oh yes.

Went to Best Buy.. Heroes, Transformers and Hot Fuzz, but then no HD DVD player. Went to another.. HD DVD player, Transformers, 300... no Heroes. Then I got lost for like an hour. This was an unproductive night. :|

This war ain't ending any time soon. Toshiba doesn't wanna give up the royalty money off of hd-dvd becoming successful....fanboys online of course are fueling this fire. I've gotten to the point now where I'm apathetic to the whole situation...

Two good posts for thought:

Comment at highdefdigest:

It's semantics. Whether the sale is marketed as a BOGOF or a 2 for $25 is irrelevant. The bottom line is it works out to a 50% discount per blu-ray sold. If blu-ray sold 100,000 units during this promotion to counter the release of Transformers then we are looking at a very modest promotional investment of approximately $1,250,000 (100,000 x $12.50). That's quite the bang for the BDA's buck compared to the reported $150,000,000 paid for Paramount exclusivity with Transformers as the crown jewell of that deal. That's less than 1% of the Toshiba "investment" and both consumers and retailers benefited rather than a couple studios (Paramount/Dreamworks).

Comment at AVS:

You HD DVD guys are funny. Look at it this way:
The HD DVD Promotions Group spent it's "promotional money" to buy Transformers exclusively for their format.

The BDA spent its "promotional money" to do a 2 for 1 for its installed base.

So, you're applauding the group (HD DVD) that enriched another corporation (Paramount) to take a release away from Blu-Ray vs the group (BD) that put more discs in CONSUMERS hands at a great price.

Don't know about you guys, but I'll take the "promotional considerations" from the BDA any day versus seeing them go to another studio to keep releases away from HD DVD...

Carry on...

I'm really surprised.

Blu-ray groups underhanded dealings save the day, haha.

And this "get two movies of your choice + get heroes + blah blah blah " isn't underhanded?
It was a smart business move all and all.

Ok on Sunday I headed into best buy and got my HD-DVD add on for my 360 with Heroes. On Tuesday I hear you all saying i was supposed to get 2 free HD-Dvd's with it? Can I just walk in with my receipt, tell them I never received said offer or should I simply call corporate and see what to do?

BOGOF or not, bluray still selling more discs when there were pretty much no new titles, Vs transformers day and date and exclusive blah blah, just puts the nail in HDDVD - for me personally.

I was tempted to buy the EP30 which is out very soon in the UK, and reasonably priced. But I have plenty of blurays coming up to spend my money on, so no real need. And now I feel better about holding out.

if worst comes to worst, return the items, and rebuy them with the 2 movies as well... at that point, it doesn't matter what the managers say, since the system will automatically do the discount...

I'll try to head in tomorrow, its all open so I don't want to deal with that, but I don't want to lose out on 2 free movies either.

Yeah, the HD-DVD one is even worse because you have lots of people like these forum guys buying HD-DVD players even when they have them to later sell them. So the HD-DVD player sales get artificially increased.

But yep, both companies do it. It's a dirty market.

Why the fuck is this format war still going? C'mon Warner, go Blu-Ray exclusive and it's over.
each side should start buying exclusive releases like the gaming hardware companies do :lol

We'll see LotR exclusive to one side and all hell will break loose.

Here's a novel idea:
The studios should just use whichever format is cheaper for them to produce, therefore yielding the best profit margin.

(I have no idea which one it is, I just want this dumb shit to end so I don't start a library of the 21st century's equivalent to Betamax.)

Fuck that. These aren't video games.

Toshiba paid 150mil for Paramount when they were already supporting them and it still didn't help. Well, I guess it helped but it didn't throw them way ahead of BD for that week.

Paramount has got to be loving this. Sure they would have sold probably tripled the sales if they had stayed neutral but even then they wouldn't have made as much as they did with the toshiba deal.

Videogames are not media disc formats. If one doesn't die they both will eventually.

Btw was that Paramount deal only PR bullshit afterall? The way these avsforum guys are talking it seems that Paramount isn't really exclusive and that the 150 million deal was a PR stunt that only secured Transformers.

F them. I wanted Transformers on Blu-Ray. =( Oh well, I'll wait it out. By the time it does come out, BR movie prices will have dropped down anyways. :D

It's obvious that HD DVD will never win the format war now if TRANSFORMERS can't give them a winning week in sales when there were absolutely no new titles on the BD side worth buying; BOGO or not.

Toshiba needs to throw in the towel so that HDM can survive.

WHAT?!? Box sets worked with the Best Buy deal? Shit, I might have to try and double dip on this promo tomorrow (hopefully it's not fixed yet in the system). BTW, I just got Transformers + 300 + Heroes + 5 movies mail away for about $35 after selling the HD-DVD drive for $160 today. :lol

Yes, Im positive that you have no idea which is the cheapest for companies. Give me a break. Why would you even care about what companies make as opposed to what we pay, unless you work for them?

Because after all is said and done it'll cost him money? It's not like gas prices went down when oil prices went up...
