and thats what dissapoints me, is we were close to a clear advantageous winner, and then i hear people going NEUTRAL. they are extending the format war.

It is irritating honestly, and I personally still think that it has been HD-DVDs most successful tool yet.
If you can not win, play for the draw.
The sad thing is when you think about how many great titles are being held back until there is a winner.
If people ever think that they will see Star Wars or Lord of the Rings among other things until there is a clear winner they are wasting their time.

If one of the two formats does not put the other one out soon, then both are going the way of the laser disk.
laser disc was a succesful albeit small market, until something better came along that catered to the people that wanted a high end movie viewing format. it just so happened it catered to the general public as well... but without something better than hd-dvd or blu-ray both will survive, at least until that better thing comes along... and then we'll have something better.

being neutral is keeping an iron in each fire. it isn't in my interest as a movie buyer to deny myself a high definition film that is already out that i can afford to buy, so that a set of multimillion dollar corporations can make more money than a different set of multimillion dollar corporations.

as for the notion that team purple is all 'hd-dvd guys' i think that's just nonsense. a lot of people that were blu-ray owners went neutral this past weekend. ignatz isn't all of sudden biased towards hd-dvd because he figured a player was worth the asking price given the movies that were out.

i was able to play hd-dvds only for a grand total of five months... and that was more about what i could afford than what i couldn't.

i think one reason you see a lot of neutral people defending hd-dvd on a technical, image/picture quality level, is because you know what... we have both. we obviously like both... and we'll defend one if people attack it.

obviously due to it's higher specs, you can't really attack blu-ray that same way, so i spend more time defending HD as a format... but i only do so because i like it just as much as Blu-Ray... and it gets criticised as a format more than Blu-Ray.

if people were still saying HD-DVDs have better IQ than Blu-Ray because Blu-Rays use MPEG2 i'd be telling them they were about a year out of date and propogating shit that wasn't true any more... but there really aren't people that still do that.

if everyone is neutral, there is no reason for a studio, be they blu-ray or hd-dvd exclusive, not to put a film out, because everyone will be able to play it.

if all players become neutral... then that's an end to the war just the same as if blu-ray or hd-dvd dies out. that's what happened with DVD+RW and DVD-RW... unless you think that war is still going.

Anybody with the 360 add-on having problems playing "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry"? I popped it in and updated it. Then I'm still getting this disc read error.

Yeah, it is odd really.
The same self preservation instinct that keeps me from putting a red hot steel poker into my eye socket keeps me from putting that disk into my 360 add on.
Still looking for a work around.
That is a joke...

Anyone know why the HDM sections of AVS have been shut down since last night?
Why do you think? Same reason this thread should be locked sometimes.

And Chuck and Larry is the worst movie I've seen in the past few years (saw it in theaters as a filler between some other movies). HORRIBLE. My friend and I felt embarassed sitting in the theater and watching it, that's how fucking terrible it is.

Many of you know first hand that AVS Forum is first and foremost a site dedicated to helping others get the best out of the equipment they own. We promote the in home audio and video experience. People helping people.

With that said, we are sad to say that this is only the second time in the history of AVS Forum where we needed to close down some sections of the site for a short time. In this case, it is the HD format areas for HD DVD and Blu-ray which will be closed to new posts.

Why are we taking such an action? Simple, we want you all to know a few things that we like and that we do not like about what has been taking place here on the site and elsewhere. We hope to also give some of the most vocal posters in those sections time to think about what they may be doing to the site and the formats they may support in general.

First, AVS Forum as a site and a company that is NEUTRAL on the format war. Anyone who says otherwise just is not informed as to what AVS Forum is all about. In fact, we had both Blu-ray and HD DVD as sponsors at the AVS Forum CEDIA 2007 party in September where both camps had a chance to say a few words to the 400+ people that attended. Both camps were outstanding for their support of the AVS Forum community and we look forward to working with both as we have been. Also both sides have been sponsors of the site by running ads here to which helps support the site. We thank them both for this support and their continued support. Without the ads and the ad dollars for them and other site sponsors, AVS Forum could not operate.

Second, We love the HD formats in general. In fact Alan, David, Jason, and others who help here use both formats. Why? Simple, we love movies and care to watch them in hi-def form no matter what that may be. (Yes, we also owned DVHS!) No matter how this all shakes out in the end, we will still be watching movies and doing so happily in 1080P.

Third, while AVS Forum seems to be the top place this war is being fought, we really do not like how the members are acting as of late. We have until now tried to deal with it as we can, but now it has come to this. We have seen members attacking other members not only in debate, which is the right way, but with physical threats that have involved police and possible legal action. This type of behavior is just not welcome here PERIOD. To the extent that some of you have gone to support either format is just, well, disgusting and has no place on this site. The amount of misinformation posted here and other places on-line HELPS NO ONE. You are doing NO ONE any good, not even your own format of choice. Why? Think about it, you post false information that then later proves to be just that, false, how does that help the cause? In fact it hurts it. So do not believe all that you read and restate it as fact.

AVS Forum gets it from both sides..."You removed my post. I support HD DVD and you all back Blu-ray so you censor my posts!!! Your a #$#@$#@!!!!" And on the flip side... "You and your site is nothing more than a shill for HD DVD, I will seek legal action for my post removals and the truth will come out." People, come on now, AVS Forum has been on the net long before digital projectors. When DVD's were still a new thing. To think we are paid off or bought out by one side or another is just, well, silly not to mention FALSE. If we were to do that, well, the site would not be like it is today.

It is by the actions we take to try to keep the site a helpful place that leads members to accuse us as bias one way or another. This is all based on what was removed. The moderators (mod) are accused by BOTH sides of being one sided. Kind of funny really for the member who does the yelling, only does so based on his attack of one format being removed thus accuses the mod of being biased. Yet that same mod may have removed 5 posts for the "other side" for the same type of behavior. Go figure. To the people saying such things, you really do not know what takes place now do you? You only see your side. You were wronged after all. That's ok, we are all only human and most of that time that is our nature to feel hurt by such actions. So please think about it before you attack the mods or the site. You may just understand we are trying to keep things from getting worse.

For those of you who think we are all HD DVD, this is NOT our doing and NOT the case. Remember, AVS Forum is known in the industry as the site for the early adopters. As such, the first one out of the gate would look to have more support than any other based on the early units and posts here on the site. It is catchy and thus starts to stick. But AVS Forum, as a site, is NOT for one format or another as mentioned. It would not be our place to make such a choice.

After all, their is a lot more to this site than just these formats. We see over 200 thousand people a day and receive over 9,000 new posts daily. We even see 500+ NEW member registrations a day. People are all not here for just the format war. Not even close. But seeing we are the largest site of it's kind on the net today, we do get the bulk of the format war activity right to our doorstep.

With that said, when we do reopen the areas, and we will, please, please be so kind to THINK before you post in these sections. If your post is self serving to just attack the other format, please do not post and go elsewhere. If you are posting just to provoke others, please go elsewhere. If you are not helping someone in someway and just care to put down their choice of product, please go elsewhere. We will not allow for the threats and the outright bashing to take place. We can close the account and even remove all the posts made by the account. As such, what a waist of time some would have had on the site.

All in all we kindly ask you to please consider what you are posting before you post it. Also consider your actions towards others and that included the mods, the admins, and the site itself. Remember, false and misleading information posted here or elsewhere can lead to issues for yourself or your place of employment if posting from a corporate network. One of our favorite movies lines..."evil begets evil"...so please be helpful.

Thank you all for your help in keeping AVS Forum the place to be for help, support, and good information. We are truly sorry to those of you affected by this that should not be.

Side note...Please do not PM us or contact us about this (admins or mods). You see, we already hear it all from both sides good and bad. Not to mention we get enough mail and PM's as it is in our normal operations. If sent, they will not be replied to. Thank you for your understanding.

Well the problem at AVS is lenient moderation. The moderation is too moderate, so to speak.

It seems that over there, a knucklehead can threadcrap for months, dozens of posts a day, and nothing will happen. Then they wonder how it all comes to a head and why they need to nuke the place.

I say, nuke the trouble makers and be done with it. At least here at GAF, you know that the mods will deal with individual posters rather than making the entire forum pay.

OokieSpookie said:
Was that really needed?
Nobody really cares I am thinking.
Maybe this will cut down on crazy bullshit rumors being linked in here all of the time.
"ZOMG some guy on avs said ...."

Well, there's lots of good information over there, and many good posters. It's just that there's too much tolerance for utter bullshit.

Well said.
Highdefdigest is alot the same way, although they at least have a "smackdown" forum and then seperate forums for hd and blu discussions away from that.

I agree with your point, but I did not go neutral. I think the price is fine (phenomenal, even) but until HD-DVD proves it's going to last, I don't want to invest in the software.

They really only have themselves to blame. They haven't banned anyone for stirring up shit. Thats why I mostly stick here, as this board doesn't tolerate shit like that.

Agreed.
Nothing is wrong with supporting your side, but you can tell how many people jump in to threads with the sole intent of stirring shit up and trolling.
Alot of them do not even own either format and just ride the anti Sony or anti Microsoft wave

Yeah, so, I found out that Battlestar Galactica is coming out on HD-DVD only, so I think it's time to finally get a decent player. I use the PS3 for blu-ray, but I will not tolerate the absurd amount of noise the HD-DVD add-on and my 360 make combined.

What's the cheapest (yet not crappy) HD-DVD player one can get in Europe?

LOL web enabled features

So what I didn't tell you guys is that I managed to get in on the Best Buy deal too (got a player for my dad, who just wants to watch movies in HD and doesn't give two shits about this stupid format war...I got him a PS3 last Xmas so this makes him format neutral)...

I picked up my two free HD DVDs, Transformers and Bourne Supremacy...decided, ok, let me see what these web enabled extras are all about.

Pop Transformers in, wait for it to boot and get past all the unskippable logo movies. I select web enabled features and get a "can't connect to the network" error. I try to click "try again" but next thing I know, the disc appears to reset and I am looking at the Dreamworks intro for a second time.

I eject the disc, and enter the setup menu. Yup, DHCP is turned on, so is DNS, and it seems to have an IP address. Boot the movie again, same thing happens.

This is on an A2 with FW 2.5 (latest AFAIK) - is anyone else having this problem?

So I just bought Cars and Ratatouille on BD today at my local Fry's, and I was only charged $14.99 for Rat'. Was there a deal going on if you buy both?

So 2010 The Year We Make Contact is on HDNET movies, its so weird. How come with all the talk of A Space Oddyssey i dont see anyone mention the sequel?

Because the sequel is a pedestrian typical sci-fi movie for its time, while 2001 was a spectacle. The pinnacle of its genre for the time, and for a long time after (pretty much until Star Wars almost 10 years later), in fact.

Well... if you're going to be cynical about it... I didnt know a sequel existed i was enjoying what i saw :\

Not saying it's a bad movie, just that it's not the sort of movie people buy $5000 home entertainment setups for. It's just not that special as 80s scifi movies go.

favouriteflavour said:
not bad? doesnt that put it in the top 5 for debut sales? For a movie with the baggage it carries I would say thats pretty exceptional.
Would give it a win over that one movie with the big robots, shitty story and really cute girl...
(Don't get me wrong, Spidey 3 was asstastic and did not even have the cute girl to fall back on)

spiderman 3 sold 130000 copies. not bad

where did you get that number?

also, that's just the standalone copy of spiderman 3 and not the trilogy? if so, that's really impressive.

i wonder how well the trilogy + spiderman 3 did.

ratatouille should do even better.

I would be suprised by that considering the box office #s

Actually from what I am hearing now it is legit and from the Nieson 6 day numbers and not including the set.
Will still wait for the official Nielson word though because I am hearing it via the sony press grapevine and we know how that can be.
Apparently though 400k or so shipped and 130k sold in that six day

I think Rat can do close or better.
The Spidey numbers are affected by the fact that the boxed set was also a choice and also that Spidey 3 is a pack in for the 40gb PS3.

for everyone here that owns both formats and buys tons of discs, if one format wins over the other in the next couple of years will you rebuy all of those discs over again or just keep the old ones until the next format arives?

Remember this figure does not include the box sets, which push it much closer to 200,000. I'm sure we'll be able to figure out the exact number of boxes from the charts on Friday

It sold more than Transformers did. The 130k are certified numbers. I've heard from various sources as low as 90,000 copies for Transformers, and I think they finally settled for 110k that ware reported in HMR

This is why I don't want to buy a HD DVD player. I don't want to have to do all that lol.

I've started with blu ray now, and it's just pointless to get both, unless i know this "war" will never end.
