Check the AVS forum's A2 thread to see what was said about that. On here, I think only a few people have A2s. At least one should have Transformers, but I don't know if they tried the web enabled stuff. It's a shame, too, cause there's some good stuff there, like the rpg-style info widget with the life bars and GPS. I had issues with the disc at first until I disabled cookies.

... Pop Transformers in, wait for it to boot and get past all the unskippable logo movies. I select web enabled features and get a "can't connect to the network" error. I try to click "try again" but next thing I know, the disc appears to reset and I am looking at the Dreamworks intro for a second time.

I eject the disc, and enter the setup menu. Yup, DHCP is turned on, so is DNS, and it seems to have an IP address. Boot the movie again, same thing happens.

This is on an A2 with FW 2.5 (latest AFAIK) - is anyone else having this problem?

Question: Have you ever been able to connect to the web via your A2?

What worked for me is going into the settings, setting DHCP and DNS to on as you have, then backing out and powering down the unit. I left it sit several seconds and then booted it back up and bang, it's been connecting like gangbusters ever since.

I don't know why, but the powering down after you set the settings thing seems to do the trick. Good luck.

edit: I've got Transformers and checked out some of the web stuff last week. Seems cool, though I will say the menus are a little unwieldy. Appears more content is slated to be released in the weeks ahead, too. I'll definitely be going back to check it out.

Wow guys those that missed out on the deal maybe you'll get another chance! Well guys seeing this is new tech and all and that I bought my father one, I decided to open it up before Christmas. (I'll have to do all the firmware updates and probably hook the thing up before my father gets to use it.)

First look, is slick, a little large like the old first gen DVD players but, thinner. It does take about 30-40 sec. to boot up. Updating firmware was easy I burned a CD-R and updated that way. The remote had a lot more response after I updated the firmware.

The biggest change for me was in the sound department. Phantom of the Opera wouldn't provide the correct sound that the DVD had (crisp sound) on the 360 add-on even after the DD5.1 update (it just wasn't the same to me. When people in the movie; would talk the volume would be low but, when the music came back on the music would be too loud.) This player fixed all that no more sound issues for that movie. This player was worth it for that reason alone. I hooked up the player using the HDMI as the sound at first and then I tried straight optical to the receiver. I have only one optical source on my receiver (and one coaxial) so I have to change the optical out on the receiver when I want to play the player now. (My television uses the optical out too...) Small price to pay for better sound I'd say as straight optical seems to be the better option for me.

On the visual side, I'd say the 360 HD player holds it's on. I really can't tell a difference between the two players. My 360 is using the component option and the HD-A2 is using the HDMI option. Really isn’t any difference at least for my television. Anyone hold out on this player don't, it's great and if they go back on sale at Wal-mart or other places for $99 run don't walk to go get it. You'll thank me later!

Update: I checked Transformers and it's working for me and my DHCP, DNS and cookies are on too... I downloaded the widget RPG/additions to check! Van, I just love this PLAYER!

for everyone here that owns both formats and buys tons of discs, if one format wins over the other in the next couple of years will you rebuy all of those discs over again or just keep the old ones until the next format arives?
keep the old ones until the next format arrives.

right now i do not feel inconvenienced to have to put some of my films in one player, and some of my films in another. i won't feel any more inconvenienced if i can no longer buy the films that go in one of the players.

Ignatz... apologies for saying you were neutral when you weren't. not sure where i got the wrong idea from... so i stand corrected.

I got the A30, I noticed I had a web connect problem until I set everything to dynamic and automatic ip addressing, but it wouldn't work until I rebooted it. So maybe it was just a simple issue of rebooting, also check your router.

I also don't know why you guys are holding off, I see everything moving to media servers in the next few years. So even if HD-DVD loses, you can still rip them to your media server, BD has BD+, but I heard it been cracked, therefore you can eventually rip them to media servers too. The Media server and your Hard drive is the future. Apple will probably lead the way with itunes and apple TV (which is a low end media server)

I wasn't offended, just didn't want people thinking I was neutral when I wasn't.

In other news.... Ratatouille arrives today, according to Amazon, along with Cars and the shorts. I think my 3-year-old is going to dig the shorts most, he doesn't do feature-length movies much.

And those Spider-Man numbers are fantastic, especially if they are sold-not-shipped, and don['t include the 3-movie bundle. I await confirmation...

in theory, i could rip an HD-DVD and play it on the PS3 right? there's an amusing notion.

yupp. HTPC is awesome. My parents have one that does SD only and its so nice just having the movies sitting there to watch whenever you want. The only bad thing is with these discs you would need a TON of HD space. SD is one thing... HDM is what 4x the size or more?

up to 30 gigs if we're just talking disc size. i know you'd have to buy a mondo huge laptop sata drive, i just wondered if it was possible. haven't looked into it.

except that its still tricky to get a good solution that does DVDs well without being a tech-head, so how difficult will it be for HD?

And if you don't want to compress them (presumably you're buying them for the quality?) then you're looking at 30GB per movie. Just a small collection of 100 movies is already 3 terabytes. You'll need a small server room in no time :)

in a couple of years multi terabyte drives will be affordable.

My new A3 seems to be updating its firmware successfully via download - it's at "DL 12/35" right now. I did go into the setup and tell it I had a connection faster than 56k, so maybe that helps?

Received confirmation from bestbuybusiness.com that I'll be getting an A3 instead of an A2 from that order too (which will be an Xmas gift for my parents).

Just got mine also. Whats the difference, besides sound output?

Just get a nice multiformat player and keep the old ones. No need to rebuy anything.

So what's your most anticpated HD title in Q4? Mine has got to be Blade Runner. I've been dying to bust a nut on that for years now! It better be a superb transfer.

You can get Cars and Ratatouille together on Amazon for $37 shipped (basically the same $10 BB is giving out but I know some people have the extra 10% off so it is a better deal)

I've been hanging out at 1 wally world for about 3 days now and my wife's been at another one with our 4 kids for about 2 days (yes she loves blu). I didn't even know this site was around but some other guy who was also trying to stop people from buying that cheap door stop for 98 dollars told me about it and said I should check it out.

I've been out there stopping people from buying HD-DUD junk, doing my part wondering where the heck everyone else is?

Really sometimes I feel like I need one of those shots those goverment people got when they went to the Nascar races. These people are sooooo dirty, dirty and cheap. I ask everyone of them "how can you spend your hard earned money on this JUNK"???

So far I've gotten 13 people to buy Blu-Ray !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife hasn't been doing as well and 2 of our kids are now sick with some type of wally world junk but it's been worth it!!! We will win!

Wow! Just wow.

The key difference is that one is available, and the other is not ;). Also the A3 has 300 and Bourne Identity bundled, which is a nice bonus.

Also, as an FYI, I have a 720p set, and I found that setting the player to 1080i and letting my TV do the scaling/deinterlacing resulted in better PQ than when the player was set at 720p. At 720p, the PQ was slightly inferior to the 360 HD-DVD player (which was always set at 720p), but at 1080i, it's identical. YMMV.

My online firmware update ended up working perfectly.

I don't think you can (legally) rip HD DVD to a media server yet. Although they trumpet "managed copy" not a single disc has shipped with the features AFAIK.

As for my network issues, I have power cycled it repeatedly, and I don't think I have ever gotten it on the network. I updated via CD-R and for fun I tried later to do a network update and got a "can not find out server" error instead of a "you are already at the latest version" message...

I got a few things left to try but I'm surprised and how difficult this thing is being, because clearly my net connection is otherwise working (and my router does report it giving the player a DHCP lease)...

By the way when are Season 1 & 2 making their debut on Blu-ray?

Yeah, I'd like to know as well, especially details on special features.

Sadly, there isn't one for me until Zodiac in January; conversely, even if I had Blu, there isn't anything that catches my interest until Sunshine (which happens to be the same week as Zodiac).

Both formats have managed remarkably boring lineups for the next few months, IMO. It's mostly new release/blockbuster material and a few weak catalog titles -- save for Blade Runner, which will obviously be very popular, but unfortunately, I dislike it. :\

That's funny Argyle, because I did the same thing you did (Cd-r burning/update and then tried to log on thru Toshiba's network and I got the same error you did. "can not find out server"). I put Transformers in and tried out the the online update and they downloaded fine. Should Toshiba's network say "you are already at the latest version" message?

It's a funny thing about these HD films...if you throw one in for just a second, you end up watching the whole dang thing.

Last night I had to do a bit of work, so I pulled out the laptop and got going. I hadn't watched POTC on blu-ray yet, so I figured it would be fine to have it on while working. Well, after a few moments I had set the laptop aside and just stared at the screen until the credits rolled. The wife got sucked in too and we've seen this stupid movie a hundred times already.

I'm sure the same thing will happen again tonight when I put in Ratatouille to just "see how it looks for a minute."

Good times.

Wish I could help, Argyle. Have you tried waiting 30 seconds before powering back on? Maybe the unit needs time to clear out its memory or something.

I suggest sacrificing some chickens next.

No kidding. I had NTP turned on, so I turned that off...and I manually set the DNS server for my ISP instead of letting it autoconfigure. No dice.

I just moved the ethernet cable back into the networked mp3 player and that is happily streaming so I know the cable is good (plus the router does give the player an IP address, so it's not like the ethernet cable or jack on the A2 is toast)...

So, I rented Knocked Up and watched it last night. As far as the movie goes, I think I really liked it, Apatow puts enough heart into his characters that you care about them even though they are cracking dick and fart jokes for pretty much the entire time :)

Image quality seemed soft, is this how this disc is or is it the player? This is the first HD DVD I've watched from beginning to end...Transformers seemed kinda soft too.

Of course, the web enabled features weren't working but...registration required? Seriously, wtf Universal...

On your router make sure you have UPnP enabled and try turning off your router's internal firewall

I've never really understood why would someone would go out and purchase the same movie on another format which would basically look exactly the same.?

It's not like you'd be getting improved pic quality.. 1080P is 1080P regardless of format.

The audio could maybe differ if the studioes provided new audio options.. But even then it would be minimal and only if they even decided to go through all the trouble.

The 'obsolete' player would still be functional and would work just fine. Especially if someone has a nice sized collection going.. why would somone go through all the trouble, expense and time to replace a perfectly fine movie collection.

The only reason why I could even imagine someone doing this, is if for some odd reason they absolutely cannot have the player taking up such minimal space.

Other than that (and even still), I think it'd be pretty anal to do so.

But to answer you question: just keep the old ones until the next format arives?

i think that'd be Tremors for me. i've got my fingers tightly crossed that Uni don't drop the ball on what is for me, one of the most rewatchable movies ever made...

also Pan's Labyrinth. been looking forwarsd to an HD version of that since i saw it at the cinema.

Shoot Em Up would be on the list too, but it's Jan 1st :)

Were you able to update the firmware online? Regarding the issue of softness, see my 720p/1080i post above. I found my new A3 to be quite 'soft' at 720p (on my 720p set), but 1080i looked much better.
