Wow with Toshiba nearly giving away its players and relative movies a 70:30 week was unthinkable even with Spiderman3. I thought the best BR could do was 60:40.
The HD-DVD group will lose its face this holyday season if the gap will get bigger with the 399$ PS3 and standalone players and of course the exclusive contents.

I'm optimistic on BluRay over HD-DVD, but this does need to be examined a little more closely.

1) Free movies mailed-away for are not going to show in totals
2) Do the Best Buy and Amazon movies count in totals?
3) We need to watch over the next few weeks. There may be a slow wave of HD-DVD support built on the backs of those players.

On the other hand, the general concensus was that peple would pick up a few movies with their player, and that doesn't seem to have had any effect.

The people who bought their players from Wal-Mart may have bought some movies there too. In which case, those numbers aren't represented here AFAIK.

I'm not sure, but I don't think the reported week doesn't represent the week of the Walmart "fire sale"

Yes and no blu movies sold at Walmart , no Spidey, no boxed sets, nothing else at alll...

More fuel to the fire that this format war sucks:

Home Media Magazine said:
Representatives from both sides have stressed how important this fourth quarter is for high-def media. However, Jim Bottoms of the home etnertainment research firm Understanding & Solutions said recently that the fourth quarter is no longer the determining period for either format. The Paramount/Dreamworks decision made sure of that.

"There is a growing concern throughout the industry that both high-definition disc formats could be lost completely in a world of competing delivery options and viewing platforms," Bottoms said. "As we stand today, industry support for [Blu-ray] across content and hardware remains the strongest grouping, and it is therefore the format with the greatest chance of market success, although its strength is being eroded. Whatever happens, continued competition between the two groups will lead to continuing confusion and uncertainty, and therefore delayed consumer purchase decisions."

The "two free of your choice" and "three free of your choice" count as sales and are taken into account.
the mail aways do not on either side nor do pack ins.

Big numbers for BD. The SI numbers also went back up a point. Most telling was the software sales, total domination AND some titles (300, FF42) that might indicate new owners.

As for the Rat review, I'll definitely give it another shot whenever I go format neutral. Peter's tough on movies in general. It's his first 5 star overall rating, though I know Hot Fuzz got that as well, from another reviewer.

I believe he is referring to the fact that both formats surviving is bad for both formats.
I mean it is cute and all how HD people go from "we will WIN" to "both can live together", but it is still widely regarded as bad for both.

That's a strong week for BD, though it is lamentable that it was on the back of a fucking awful movie like Spiderman 3... Seriously, I can think of half a dozen BD exclussive titles that shou- oh why bother to cry about it?

Regardless, that Neilson data doesn't include Wal-Mart does it?

I see. I know in my case, when I looked for a player, I was looking for Christmas present for my dad. So he wouldn't have gotten it for at least a month and a half. The guys standing around me were mostly getting it for themselves. What sucked was that there were no cheap HD DVD's. They couldn't find the box that was shipped for the occasion.

Yep. And the people who benefit the most from a slow HD adoption rate are: Toshiba - who still gets major royalties from DVD and Microsoft - who would prefer a digital download futre.

No, but that's true for either format.

It's "Nielsen" by the way. My wife works for them, so I had to learn to spell it correctly or get my email bounced!

(No, she has no access to the Media Track stuff.)

My copy of Cars + Ratatouille shipped, happy camper here. I'm going to pick up 5-6 titles more titles today from FutureShop/HMV, Buy 1 Get 1 .. :D

So Spidey 3 and Trilogy sold upwards of 220K?

Probably more, you have to remember as we will have people insisting for the next four pages walmart doesn't count on Nielsen so there are more Spidey, more Trilogy, more of all kinds of Blu ray numbers.

I'm pretty sure Walmart had a good sale on HD DVD movies as well during the A2 sale so its hard to imagine they didn't move a decent number of movies. Its really tough to say though with Walmart not giving numbers to Nielson. Nielson's normal estimates likely don't account for anything like what went on last weekend and they surely would have affected the ratio to some degree.

Regardless though, long term we will see if this has a real affect on HD DVD sales.

I love how the "only one format camp" members are only on the Blu Ray side. Why did you guys get an HD DVD player last year when the format was on top, then? Oh yeah, you were waiting for your Ps3s.

Wal*Mart was something like 60% of the cheap A2's sold, so I would expect a big bump from all the Amazon, Best Buy and Circuit City buyers as well. That, and Wal*Mart's HD-DVD selection is pretty limited. I doubt that it would show much difference.

Because I didn't want to spend $500 on just a HD media player. I didn't want a part in this war at all, but I bit with the PS3 when the price was right (around this spring I got it for about $500) and when the benefits outweighed the drawbacks. It's an excellent system that plays PS1, PS2, PS3 games, upscalles DVDs, and oh yeah, plays HD movies as well.

WalMart's numbers would not have made a big difference here. Blu Ray had the big release (Spiderman), one that appealed to the Ps3 crowd, so nothing else matters.

More like the Walmart way I think since they are the ones refusing to give sales to any 3rd party.

Nielsen still estimates for Walmart sales though from what I understand - its just hard for them to see the affects of big sales like what happened last weekend with the A2 and previously with the BD BOGO sales.

thaivo said:

The A2 firesale was included in this weeks numbers, which is why Transformers seemed to have legs with approx. 41K in sales. It just couldn't match the SM trilogy and SM3 sales.

9 out of the top ten movies are BD, even after the A2 was practically given away. Amazing week for BD. It really doesn't look very good for Toshiba and don't know how some could say it is?

I almost did. Studio support won me over, and the prospect of getting a game machine *and* HD player hedged the high cost of a dedicated player ($500 minimum at the time for HD-DVD, $600 for Blu-Ray). And the 360 add-on had not yet been announced, or I may have gone that way. Even then, I wavered over the bad news about BD disc quality, and looked longingly at the WB titles only out on HD-DVD.

I went with long-term viability over short term lead in the end, based on studio support. I remember how DVD vs DiVX went, and the studios support correctly predicted the results.

In any case, I was no where near as certain of my choice then as I am now. I was prepared for BD to tank, figuring that if I had made the wrong choice, it wouldn't be long before I knew (ha!) and that player prices would drop making the mistake less painfiul (moreso than I even predicted, it turns out).

"Big" being relative here since the numbers we are looking at are still pretty small. It actually should make a pretty big difference for one week. We are talking about a chart where 4k sales makes the top 10 - moving that amount of players with an attach rate of ONE would probably cause a lot of titles to chart.

It wouldn't really budge the LTD of course and if last Friday was a one-day anomaly, it won't matter long term either.

And not to take anything away from SM3 which of course nothing was going to touch. Sony did a phenomenal job especially considering the number number of trilogy sales which I am still surprised at.

Aparently. Not all on one side, either. I was making fun of Blu folks for criticizing dual-format owners as "the enemy."

Now Van's on a rampage against anyone who thought BluRay might win before it actually took the lead.

Edit: and whoops, now he's crying.

You think that there are not at least 150k 200k people out there who did not just get into it because they have a 360 and got the add on as a whim?

You actually bring up people holding out for divx when there is no question in anyone's mind that dvd won that a long time ago which is nothing like Blu vs Hd?

Do not let the numbers make you cranky again Van, you were doing so well.

He can think whatever he thinks, but to take my comments, and say that I would rather have no one have HDM is pretty silly.

From the very start, most of us HD supporters have been primarily saying that we believe HD DVD would persist and survive, in the face of constant barrages of "your format is already dead" posts.

Certainly there are comments about the death of BD here and there, but mostly out of jest.

Why ask a question if you don't want to read the answer? My answer to you was "I did almost buy HD-DVD, although it looked that Blu had the better chance long-term." Somehow that equals "PS3" to you.

Right, so why did just about every Ps3 Blu fan here (you included?) buy the Ps3 and Blu Ray movies at a time when they were losing?? Where was the one format club then?

If there was, I certainly was in it. I never planned to support two formats, and was certain one would kill the other. The only issues were "which one?" and "can I justify buying now instead of waiting?"

The PS3 just made the barrier to entry very low. The resons I listed in my previous post were the reasons that made me get into the war, not why I think BD should win. I think BD should win the war because it has:

1) Higher capacity and bandwidth.
2) The most CE support.
3) The most studio stupport.

Not if that one format you support is Blu Ray.

edit: oni, I don't care who you think "should" win. I knew the answer to that already. Now you're on the one format future club and castigating Toshiba and MS and anybody who supports HD DVD for stalling adoption. Yet at the time you bought into your format, it was losing. That would make you a hypocrite.

20k post! If I didnt get it whatever im still leaving this.

So I'll start by saying this format war has me jadded to having a unified format for hi definition movies. And continue with, I would absolutly love if HD DVD won outright so we could have one format. Sure some of you may not believe me, I dont care, but unlike others around here I would rather have the format I have chosen to back lose than to have a stalemate of two failing Hi Def formats.

I have been thinking about something to say since we started nearing 20k, but I think I'll ask why are we such dicks to each other about this? Ill be the first to admit I have gotten caught in the heat of the moment and said things I regret and or gotten banned for. And have been trying to stay out of the recent bullshit, but sometimes getting in the middle of arguments I would prefer we stop having. But even still right after post in some of these arguments I wonder who gives a shit about these stupid hypothetical situations?
Why do we on both sides constantly attack each other? Its old people, is it not possible we discuss things without bragging and or melting down over bullshit?
Leave your irrational Sony hate out of this, honestly your going to support Microsoft becuase you hate Sony? Thats retarded. Leave your Microsoft/Toshiba hate out of this.
If someone wants to come in and troll, let the mods take care of it, lets try and keep it so we dont need mods in this thread except for the random troll, and not to mod the regulars.

Stinkles if you cant post something constructive, seriously, stay the hell out of the thread please.

No Thaivo im not insane, im tired of this attitude that some people have of "well if i cant have my format win i would rather both lose." What the fuck is that shit? This is about the movies not which company gets fucking royalties, let them fight over it.
You almost sounded like this for a minute there.

Van I couldnt care less if you can read my posts, but often you post so much bullshit its insane. I love how it is only blu-ray fans that would rather have 1 format even if it isnt their own. I rarely if ever see HD DVD fans saying they would rather have Blu-ray win than have both lose. Anytime you want to pull your head out of your ass the rest of us would appreciate it.

User friendly, yes some people here do have a problem with other people supporting a format. Its on both sides and really its ridiculous.

Stooge, we are both in Austin, lets go grab a beer or something. Maybe show each other our "theaters." :p

With all that said i cant wait, in the next few weeks I will have recieved, Cars, Ratatouille, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Oceans Box Set, Prison Break Season 1 and Spiderman Box Set.
