Is it worth it to keep a Samsung 1400 blu-ray player for movies if I'm going to get a PS3? It is till unopened, so while I can't return it, I can sell it.

Honestly there is really no reason to keep it unless you want a back up.
Sell it and buy some games and movies.

According to CAG, there will be another WalMart secret sale on 11/24-11/25 where purchasers of the 80GB PS3 (in store) for the $499 MSRP can choose 10 free BRDs for free, in addition to the 5 free by rebate.

I know that if Snah weren't banned, he would have posted this at least 4 times, so this deal is posted in his honor.

I told you guys this a few weeks ago. WM was going to have a secret sales involving bluray. They are not exclusive to either format. They are just trying to get customers to come to their stores with these "secret sales". Good deal IMO for somebody who wants to join HDmovies.

I have been saying that from day one but hey, people want to believe what they want to believe.

There's still a helluva difference between a $100 price of entry and a $500 price (in the case of the deals), although I agree that they're not pushing an agenda.

Lucky bastard, review will be up later.

an unrated superbad edition? how unrated can it possibly get?

Was talking about the unrated thing on another board tonight.
You have to remember, all "Unrated" means is that it contains some footage that was not presented to the ratings board.
It can be a shot a bowl of fruit, and it will be an unrated edition.

I miss the days when unrated meant gratuitous nudity, sex, and dismemberment.

Has 2001 not been released on Blu-Ray yet?

As I said before, it doesn't appear to have been in Canada. At least according to Future Shop. In fact, the release date now says *January 29, 2008*. It is definitely out in the US though, and it's theoretically out on HD-DVD (some people have managed to find it, but I sure haven't).

It is out on HD DVD (I imagine its out on blu ray also) in the US I bought for $20 at BB.

I saw it in Richmond Best Buy on the release date.

Very upset that the Bluray versions are fucking delayed until next year up here. This is ridiculous. Glad I ordered Eyes Wide Shut from Amazon. Hopefully it will be here this month sometime...

Yes. And on HD DVD too (identical transfers, same codec, blah; for once BRD and HD people cant flame eachother, as all these Kubricks are identical on both formats). Anyways, I have the HD DVD, not BRD, but I just walked into my local brick and mortar Futureshop and picked it up, no problem. Im in Canada, BTW, if that helps. Although Futureshop probably gave that away.

Phoenix said:
That's extremely telling right there considering that BRD came out a season later and still has more expensive product in the channel.

I'm just amazed that HD-DVD is as close as it is with all the Disney releases. I bought all the Pixar stuff and expected HD-DVD to be killed this week. They are hanging in there, and the numbers are still in the hundreds of thousands for movie sells weekly.

That is definitely one way to look at the numbers...

Oh, come on. Most of us expected Blu-ray to be having 80:20 weeks for Spiderman and then the salvo of Disney movies. I heard over and over again how Blu-ray would "kill," "destroy," and "annihilate" HD DVD those weeks.

Ah, never mind.

Ah, never mind.

People who spout huge numbers are delusional and make themselves look like idiots.
The bottom line is that week after week blu wins and is building it's since inception lead.
That is all that matters in the end.
If HD can break into the 40% range two or three weeks in a row then I will say they are holding on and fighting.
That will effect blus since inception numbers and be telling.
There are people on all sides who take things too far and it will always come back to bite them.
As far as Spiderman 3 there are more copies of the Spiderman 3 blu ray in homes than any other title on either side so I would say it is doing as well as it should.
The Disney stuff won the week fairly easily with no bogo sales or anything else.
They did kill, destroy, and annihilate hd-dvd those weeks.

To be fair, it's still 65/35 AFTER Transformers (the biggest movie of the summer, mind you) was released as an HD DVD exclusive, and Toshiba practically gave away 100,000 players at $100.

Take away either of those desperation moves, and it most certainly WOULD have been an 80/20 week.

At this point what more can Toshiba do to spur adoption? With Ps3 sales spiking due to price cuts and that 40 gig things do not look good.

Not to be a jerk but didn't the Since Inception totals drop a point on the Blu-Ray side a few weeks back? I thought I remembered that happening.

We'll all just have to wait and see, but with the piddly-ass numbers HDM is doing overall right now, there's no convincing me that anything is settled or close to being settled.

Get back to me when Blu-ray standalones are $199 or $249 and selling on par or better with HD DVD players. Because PS3, though doing a fine job at propping up the format, is not going to have the final say in this format war.

The fact is that we didn't see the overwhelming Blu-ray dominance most of us expected these past couple of weeks. It may come with next-week's numbers, but all the BOGOs make that a less compelling argument for me. Studios aren't in this business to give away their movies.

And manufacturer's aren't in this to give away their hardware. I'm sorry, but that statement sounds like the most delusional statement I've heard so far. Does BluRay have to outsell HD-DVD for two years in a row to get you guys to acknowledge that it's probably over?

And yes, the PS3 is going to have a much bigger impact than you think. Just between now and the end of the holiday shopping season 2009, the PS3 will have added an additional 10 million units. Even if you go by the percentage numbers of active PS3 owners that buy BluRay movies, you're looking at 2.5 million additional consumers. HD-DVD couldn't dream of having those kinds of numbers.

Standalones have approached aprity already at double the price of HD-DVD players, I have no doubt that what you talk about will happen, Kolgar.

Also, the argument about piddly-ass numbers applies to BOGO deals, too. If the numbers are that small, have a sale is no big deal.

My argument has been and still is that the piddly numbers don't mean anything-- the format war will be settled long before these formats approach anythign like mass penetration. The war is for which of the two formats will get overall industry support. And that will be determined by a bunch of factors, sales only being one, but almost all in favor of Blu-Ray.

I'd say you're right about what the numbers would be without those two factors. Accordingly, what they need to do is continue to subsidize player sales with deals (such as the A3 deal currently available on Amazon and at Circuit City). Regarding PS3 sales "spiking", let's see in a month, huh? I know you just bought one, but let's not get carried away.

By the way, Amazon currently has the best deal I've seen for a BRD standalone - the Samsung 2gen player for $340.

None at all, is that I have met some individuals that assured me that without the PS3, Blu-Ray will still win by a land slide. I had to roll my eyes at that comment.

How does a stand alone player compare to the PS3? If I could buy a blue-player, it will be a stand alone unit.

Ah, never mind.

Didn't Toshiba sell close to 100k players? Assuming that at least 1:1 software ratio, HD DVD should have done much better than 65:35. But I guess we know who bought the players - guys who owned HD DVD already. Some bought it as their 2nd player for a different room. Otherwise, we would have seen a huge spike in the software sales.

However, it's very possible that software sales for HD DVD doesn't matter at the moment. I'm not an idiot. I can completely see that some people will watch the 2 movies the player comes with and wait for their free movies before buying any software on their own. In that case, there might never be a spike, but a steady 2:1 advantage for Blu-ray throughout the holidays.

It will be interesting to see how Warner reacts to this. IMO, Blu-ray will be make or break on how Profile 1.1 is adapted. If it goes smooth, I can see Warner saying bye bye to HD DVD in Jan. If not, Blu-ray is likely toast.

Right.....because lord knows, if you support BluRay you must be working for the BluRay camp. It's childish to call people something they're not while ignoring the facts they bring up.

Read the thread. You may learn why some people, including studio execs, may not be willing to crown Blu-ray the victor on the merits of PS3 alone.

The console is a giant plus for Blu-ray right now, it's really carrying the flag well for the format, but standalone sales need to come along before we can close the book on this.

I don't care how many PS3s are sold, or what margin they have over HD DVD. It's still a game console and the studios will want to see the format's standalones gain traction before they're comfortable calling this a day.

I do not agree.
I think you would have seen more of a rush for blu stand alones to drop to a mass adoption price rate and you would not have seen Toshiba throw their hail mary so soon.
May have actually been a more interesting war.
Saying that it would be dead is a bit of stretching.

Dumb question, but what is this profile 1.1?

Compare how?

Pricewise, you can get a standalone for about the same, give or take and depending on deals.

Feature-wise, the PS3 is oen of the best players plus has all the extra PS3 goodness-- hard drive, media playing and streaming, web browser, and it's a game system.

I'd buy the PS3 over a standlone even if you never planned to play a single game on it.

Don't really care much about the extra features the PS3 has over the stand alone unit, but I just prefer the look of the stand alone unit. It looks classy to me.

And seriously, web browser? Do people pimp that feature? Really?

Ah, okay. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going crazy.

Nope, not at all.
That is why I say that for HD to matter, they have to break 40% for a few weeks in a row which would affect that margin.
Winning one week ( even IF it were to happen) would not do anything in and of itself.

Well, it's a belief, not a fact. So, IMHO.

If no PS3, there may have been some price deflation on standalones, but still, the cheapest player at the time of PS3 release was a grand, and HD-DVD was starting to get some traction in mindshare. A standalone Blu player even close in price (that wasn't closeout) didn't come out until what, 6 months ago? And that was also one of the best quality standalones, some of the others had issues.

Sony would still be holdouts, but I wold guess that at least one other studio would have supported HD-DVD if Blu hadn't shown immedeate traction upon PS3 release. I'm not sure what would have driven adoption faster than HD-DVD other than selction, and that was also slow coming.
