This was followed by more posts on the matter speculating Wal-Mart was going exclusive.

This is no different from the WB going Blu/HD DVD exclusive stuff. If it turns out either way, should that side go on and on about how the other side thought it was different, despite it being rumors?

WalMart has a Ps3 sale with movies. They've always carried Blu ray movies, they've always carried Ps3s. I don't see how anybody thought that it wouldn't happen unless WalMart went HD DVD exclusive, which is about as probable as WB joining one of the sides. It could happen, it could not, but nobody here is actively pushing the WalMart is HD DVD exclusive bandwagon, since it has never been announced. The cheap players happened, that is all.

This is a great sale for the Ps3 and it will push a ton of movies, but I don't see how this contradicts any regular (including me) because no regular has been stating that WalMart is going HD DVD exclusive as a definitive. Speculation, on the other hand, has been all over the place on every retailer and movie studio in this war.

Still not tracking. The Sound files (basically) and in this case the DTS track on 'Nature's Journey' in HD DVD was not included like it was on the Blu-Ray Disc simply because of what? DTS operates at a certain bandwidth (or has a minimum that is needed) that HD DVD can't do?
Yes, it has a minimum that couldn't be met because the video was using much of the bandwidth.

"I think things are signed and sealed and waiting to be delivered."

That's not the same thing that you're saying now.

A month ago, the HD-DVD rallying cry was that Wal-Mart would be pushing HD-DVD and only HD-DVD and that they might even be exclusive (and Kolgar wrote the above).

Now you're saying it was just speculation. Suuuuuuuuure.

And this is not to mention all the stuff that happened even earlier in the year when Enderle stuff was first posted here.

btw, I'm still waiting for you to show me some pre-Blu-ray people as excited about BD-java stuff as you, Kolgar and Wulfer were about that chat feature, so you can make your case about hypocrisy. The search funtion appears to be working. :lol

So how do I search for it so that it shows individual posts instead of just pointing to this thread?

And ookie, where is the "frenzy of bitterness" you talk about in terms of the WalMart 80GB Ps3 sale?

"Search this thread" function.

I think you should stop holding other people accountable for posts that I have made.

I also wonder why you've such a hard-on for me lately, because it sure seems that you do. I suppose I should be flattered.

In any case, the current situation seems to be that 1) Wal-Mart had a big blow-out of A2 players. 2) Wal-Mart is having a new deal that includes PS3 and Blu-rays. There's no indication that WM is going exclusive one way or the other (certainly not at my local stores, where Blu-ray shelf space is nearly twice that of HD DVD). Yet that does not take away from the fact that Toshiba had a nice day in the sun with America's largest retailer, and that they may or may not leverage that relationship again before the holiday season is over.

And for the record, I do still have suspicions that perhaps deals have been made behind closed doors, deals for support of retailers and studios that may yet come to light and may have a significant effect on this format war. But then again, maybe not. I'm just a guy posting on a message board like you are, and I'm just making guesses based on info I read and what my own gut tells me.

I'll be pleased when this format war is over. But Mousey, if HD DVD wins it, I'm going to put on a black-and-white waiter's tux and serve you up a heaping helping of crow myself. :lol

Kolgar:

I'll be hungry if that happens. And if this war ends with a single decisive winner, I won't care and will happily eat.

Honestly, I didn't remember that you said that-- I just searched for "Wal-mart exclusive" and started reading forward a few posts. And I was holding *Van* accountable for claiming that nobody was touting Wal-Mart as exclusive. I didn't give the notion much credence then, I dismissed it as wishful thinking. If I got all over everybody (from either side) for wishful thinking I'd be posting even more than I do now!

Peace.

For the fun stuff I would suggest checking the price war and sales data thread on some of the other boards that I know you are on.
On this thread I have noticed that when people are wrong they just tend to vanish for a while until there is something else.
Either way , it is a nice bit of advertising and good for all involved.
( I just hope they have decent stocks of movies)

I was responding to ookie's post about bitter responses to that WalMart thing when NOBODY addressed it once he posted it. Who was bitter about the WalMart news, and who was actively stating that? Even kolgar's stuff is speculative, and limited in scope to that discussion. There is no WalMart HD DVD bandwagon, and certainly no one cared that WalMart is doing the sale. There was no response, and certainly no bitterness. That's a fantastic deal.

high def digest? The smackdown there is crap, and I don't actively post in that smackdown area. I rather post in the HD DVD software section.

AVS? I barely post there.

Either way, does it make sense to carry that over here when no one here challenged the sale?

Getting back to the subject of films (I know some of you live and die based on sales figures and bullshit like that, but I apologise), has anyone watched the Die Hard films yet? I watched the original last night and the quality is really impressive. Detail and sharpness improvements are huge...it's never looked this good! It's not perfect but it's a big upgrade and it's done without sacrificing detail and artificially removing grain

Die Hard 2 is tonight's movie :D Apparently this one looks even better

IVan: didn't see the bitterness either, but people were suggesting the hell out of Wal-Mart being excluive, or at very least very very pro-HD-DVD and you suggesting that they weren't is what sent me searching.

Go read this thread from Nov 1 (the date I took those from) and you'll see a lot of people pumping up the Wal-Mart thing to be more than it turned out to be (Maxwell House is the biggest offender, repeately suggesting either excluivity or that Wal-Mart was subsidizing the deal in part). You can understand why Ookie would point out a Wal-Mart sale on Blu-Ray in response to it.

Ookie's right, there are a lot of transitional people (obviously not you) who disappear for a while after they get shown to be off-base, then come back after a while.

Die Hard is one of my favorite action films, and I like 3 a lot too, but I haven't seen 4 and don't like 2-- so I've been on the fence about the set. This is very encouraging however!

I'm not sure how/why, but it seems like older films are looking better in HD than the releases a year ago. Perhaps it's luck, perhaps it's better technique, or perhaps it's just that some of these films warrant more attention-- but I am not complaining.

I don't mind him posting the deal, it's a good one. But I had to ask where he was getting his bitterness stuff from, since it obviously isn't a part of this thread.

As for the Cars BD game, I could only find Petrarca being excited, and I won't count that. So I'll back off the comments, even if it irks me that the HD DVD special features are ridiculed the second they are mentioned.

It's a matter of scope. As a novelty, they're no big thing, but there's so much hyperbole attached to thier importance (as they are one of the clear advantages of HD-DVD at this point) that it encourages attack. Also, some selective reading on your part-- I expressed some interest in the chat and have done *nothing* but run down the java games but that doesn't seem to show up on your balance sheet.

You won't have to eat crow if HD DVD wins the war... you, along with several of the Blu-ray supporters in this thread (myself included), have already made it abundantly clear that you (we) are in it for a one-format future. If it happens, we win, and that's certainly no reason to eat crow.

It is not so much that they are mentioned, it is the fashion that they are usually mentioned.
It is very rare that it is just someone saying "hey did you guys hear about this? Might be kind of interesting"

It is usually "CHECK THIS OUT HAHAHA PWNED!" if not in verbage then at least in spirit and it happens on both sides.
If something is throw up confrontationally then you can not be shocked when controntation happens.
It is the same reason I get cranky when people who do not take part in the general conversation in here but they jump in to post the latest fud headlines and then vanish as well as people who appear only when there is some drama ( kmart going exclusive, walmart going exclusive, paramount etc..) and then vanish all of the other times.
I mean have your opinions , that is great and defend your side and support your side but you do not have to come off as a viral prick.

The crow will be that I think Blu-Ray will indeed win... but the taste will be covered up in yummy One Format Future sauce and I won't care. :)

Hey, what's out this week?

* Badder Santa: The Unrated Version (Blu-ray)
* David Gilmour: Remember That Night (Blu-ray)
* Die Hard (Blu-ray)
* Die Hard 2: Die Harder (Blu-ray)
* Die Hard 3: Die Hard with a Vengeance (Blu-ray)
* The Die Hard Collection (Blu-ray)
* Hairspray (2007) (Blu-ray)
* Live Free or Die Hard (Blu-ray)
* Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night's Dream (HD DVD)
* Pathfinder (Blu-ray)
* Rescue Dawn (Blu-ray)
* The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (Blu-ray)
* Star Trek: The Original Series -- The Complete First Season (HD DVD)
* Tremors (HD DVD)

I'm thinking Star Trek will own. But that's a guess. With no DVD-only verion available, ther will be a lot of non-HD buyers of the set. Matbe a small number by DVD standards, but huge by HD-DVD standards. It will be an interesting week for numbers.

You can never really guess with Trekkies, will be interesting.

Enderle is at it again :lol
I am not going to post the fud but instead am going to wait and see who the first person to post it as scripture will be.

The boxset isn't available over here (but I really, really, wish it was!) because Fox don't own the rights to Die Hard 3 in Europe - it's owned by Buena Vista. So no Die Hard 3 for Europe = no boxset :(

For the price I've paid for these three films I could have bought the boxset for America if Fox didn't region-lock everything. But it's hard to hate Fox when they're treating their catalogue titles with such impressive transfers (unlike a LOT of other studios!)

I am guessing Die Hard will don a white strappy T-shirt with no shoes and run amok in the Nakatomi Tower of HDM sales this week.

"Ho-ho-ho. Now I have a machine gun."

And the Disney flicks got to have nice tails to them, too.

Star Trek is kind of niche, isn't it? Everybody loves John McClane! :)

My prediction: 63:37.

The Star Trek box is COmbo Disc, and there is no DVD-only version. So Trekkies who want the remastered series will be buying this version.

It may not make huge numbers by DVD standards, but it's crossing into Regular Old DVD Land and that's going have an effect. Unless I'm wrong about Trek's appeal.

Alright so basically it's for people that are either hardcore video freaks or hardcore audiophilies that are going to be able to tell the difference I gather.

Otherwise, if the argument is that BR is better than HD DVD just based on size, bandwidth.... that's a pretty fucking shallow argument. :lol

VanMardigan

I have no idea what the Trekkies buying habits are, but Matrix proved to me that expensive sets don't sell that well. Not having a dvd alternative helps, but I don't know what the hype level is for trekkies on this one. Quick, someone go do some research on Trekkie message boards to see if they're hyped for this or not. :lol

Honestly, only a select few still use technical stuff to argue superiority. It's a wash in PQ/AQ for the most part. Most BD supporters in this thread take the smart route and use the format's studio, CE, and software sales are the difference right now. Although Paramount's DD plus movies give the Blu boys ammunition as well.

Hehe, pretty much, but there are people who spend tens of thousands, and more on Home Theater equipment, so they want the best available.

Also, the extra storage on BD is good for personal computer use should it become standard.
I'd rather be burning things to 50GB discs than 30GB.

I've never been one to argue the audio angle. Some BD supporters are big on it though. They're the ones who are arguing more for BD than for "any one format."

Amazon ranking is pretty crap, and this is one instance where it's probably kinda relevant (given the tech demographic).

ALRIGHT GUYS, HATE TO INTERUPT THIS HD LOVE/HATE-FEST, BUT:

What can we look forward to as far as Black Friday sales/deals..?

I know it would all be speculation and guessing at this point (unless there's a leaked list or something?) But I'm sure some of your regular HD warriors would have a good idea of what could and should be available.

So, keeping in mind that none of the replies are set in stone, what can we expect come this Friday?

Is Blu-ray gonna do a bogo deal again? Is HD DVD gonna do bundle?

Are any of the more expensive box sets gonna go on sale? I'd get the Matrix set if it wasn't still upwards of $80.00 or maybe Transformers if it was like $20/25.

Anything at all?

Anyone care to share?

I personally have said that this week will be the strongest week HD DVD has to win (After the Tranformers v. BOGO crazyness). Star Trek remastered combo discs will bring in the DVD crowd and could step on the whole HD war like Godzilla versus Bambi.

Best hardware deal on the HD side is the HD-A3 w/ 10 discs at Amazon and Circuit City for $199. I believe this will be $169 without the extra 3 movies (i.e. just the 7 pack-in and mail-away) at Sears on black friday.

Regarding movies, just go with the current deepdiscount.com 20% off sale. Code DVDTALK (and others), ends 11/25.

It's actually tomorrow. So if anyone lives out in NYC, it's a good chance to get a FREE PLAYER *.

Virgin/Toshiba to Give Away Free HD DVD Players (Valued at $299)

* This will happen on November 20 at Virgin Megastore - Times Square and Virgin Megastore - Union Square, when you are among the first 120 customers (at Virgin Megastore - Times Square) or first 30 customers (at Virgin Megastore - Union Square) who purchased the Star Trek: The Original Series Season 1 Remastered HD DVD/DVD Combo disc set. Besides this HD DVD player giveaway, there are also goodie bags being given away at the event too... to the first few hundreds. Complete details of this event can be found here.

*provided you buy the Star Trek set, which costs a lot. :lol

With Casino Royale and Better Than Fiction showing up today, my Blu-ray collection just surpassed my HD-DVD selection. I didn't think that was going to happen so soon. I have a few HD-DVDs I'm still about to pick up, however, so we'll see how the epic fight goes down through the holiday season.

Either way, I'm starting to get knee deep in both formats. It's a bummer when one of them eventually fails.

VanMardigan

^don't you mean Stranger than Fiction?

Now that I"m not getting my five free movies, there is basically no chance of my BR collection catching up to my HD DVD one this year. Unless the BDA goes even crazier than the BOGO deals, which just may happen.

This is one of the very few Blu-Ray titles and perhaps the only animé full stop that I want. Pirating it onto a WMV-DVD is always an option, though I feel bad doing that for content I love. I might be able to track down a second DVD copy of it for a reasonable price and feel safe in the knowledge that their cash from me is probably the same. Or maybe not.

So hey, what are the absolute 10/10 amazing films available on HD-DVD/Blu-ray with good PQ?

After seeing No Country For Old Men, I'm in the mood for some really damn good smaller/older films I might have missed.

For instance, I've never seen Carlito's Way. Should I pick up the HD-DVD?
