Any chance of the following movies being released in HD anytime soon?

Friday
Menace II Society
Boyz N The Hood
Dead Presidents
Pulp Fiction

Anyone? =c

By the way, Damn you BDA and your BOGO!!! I was at Fry's Burbank picking up a couple PS3 games and accidentally found myself in front of the HD DVD/Blu-Ray section. I got weak and picked up my first movies, Got Fifth Element Re-Ma, The Replacement Killers and Underworld for $30. Section was being picked clean with people with lists! I really wanted a couple other movies they had on sale but they were gone already.

So hey, what are the absolute 10/10 amazing films available on HD-DVD/Blu-ray with good PQ?

After seeing No Country For Old Men, I'm in the mood for some really damn good smaller/older films I might have missed.

For instance, I've never seen Carlito's Way. Should I pick up the HD-DVD?

According to AVS these are the best of the best on Blu

Ratatouille Video: MPEG-4 | Audio: PCM (11/12/07)
Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City Video: VC-1 | Audio: True HD
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Video: MPEG-4 | Audio: PCM
Corpse Bride Video: VC-1 | Audio: DD
Cars Video: MPEG-4 | Audio: PCM (11/12/07)
Meet the Robinsons Video: MPEG-4 | Audio: PCM
2001: A Space Odyssey Video: VC-1 | A

and on HD:

King Kong (U-C)
Hot Fuzz
Corpse Bride
TMNT
Black Snake Moan
Transformers
Troy: Director's Cut
Happy Feet

Firday is the only one announced. Both formats are probably going to get it, since it's a New Line movie.

As for the others,

Boyz N The Hood is a Columbia Pictures movie, so if it were too come out before the demis of one of the formats it would come out on Bluray. The others are unknown at this point.

I meant best in movie quality, some of that stuff you listed is pretty crap movie-wise. 5/5 movie + 4/5 or 5/5 PQ.

Disney Votes for 51GB HD DVD Media Approval.
Blu-Ray Backer Approves New HD DVD Standard

[ 11/19/2007 | 03:09 PM ]

Walt Disney Home Entertainment, a major Hollywood studio and one of the strongest backers of Blu-ray disc format, voted for approval of a preliminary specification of 51GB triple-layer HD DVD media, just like all the backers of HD DVD and unlike some other backers of Blu-ray Association within the DVD Forum, who typically abstain in HD DVD-related votes.

At the Steering Committee meeting in September Walt Disney Home Entertainment voted for triple layer twin-format HD DVD as well as triple layer HD DVD 51GB revision 1.9 preliminary media standards, according to the notes from the event available at the DVD Forum. During the meeting, twelve steering members of the DVD Forum out of twenty approved the former and eleven members approved the latter.

In both cases Walt Disney voted for the new HD DVD standards, whereas Samsung Electronics, which supports both Blu-ray and HD DVD with its Blu-ray disc (BD) and unified Blu-ray/HD DVD players, decided to abstain in voting for the 51GB HD DVD, just like some other members of the Blu-ray Association, who always withdraw from HD DVD votes, namely Hitachi, JVC, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Sharp and Sony.

Just last week the DVD Forum approved revision 2.0 of triple-layer HD DVD 51GB media, but the detailed results of the vote were not available at press time.

The fact that Walt Disney Home Entertainment, which official stance has always been strong Blu-ray support, may be an indicator that even members of the Blu-ray Association are potentially interested in the forthcoming versions of the HD DVD standard, which has been competing against BD for nearly two years in a war that is unlikely to end soon and which is even called a “stalemate” by Sony’s chief executive.

Pretty sure Disney voted for the 51GB months ago when they had a preliminary vote, unless this is really really old news posted on some site for more hits.

We'll see if it means anything if Disney ever makes an HD-DVD statement. They seem pretty pro BD right now. I don't know the latest on whether the 51GB will work with the current players, but if they aren't you think Disney wouldn't be interested at all. If it is, then maybe something could happen.

Anyways, I just got my Eyes Wide Shut and Oldboy BDs today from Amazon. Wonder if either of these will be available in Canada by the end of the year otherwise hah

First tragedy, then farce.
disney has been voting with the hddvd studios for at least a year like this. nothing new to see here, and no reason for disney not to hedge their bets.

One thing no one mentions is worldwide market shares of the HD movie market. While BluRay only holds a 65% market lead of HD-DVD in the US, in markets such as Europe and Japan, it enjoys a 75-80% market share. Is there anyway published tracking of the numbers for the other markets? It would be foolish to base which format is winning using just the US numbers since it's a fraction of the worldwide market.

Warner's 70mm releases, like Mutiny On the Bounty, Grand Prix, Battle of the Bulge and the obligatory 2001 are some of the best examples of what brilliant restoration can do for established classics: they look utterly jaw-dropping and are ripe for (re)discovery.

For a more recent film that has quality in both content and visual departments, I've become a big fan of The World's Fastest Indian.

its a very subjective thing. you could do worse than going through the lists of releases, finding movies that you're curious about/not famililar with, and check out their ratings review sites

eg I recently bought robocop, edward scissorhands and crimson tide. None of them are exactly 'citizen kane', but they are some of my favourite movies ever.

I tend to buy 90% stuff I love and must own (even if the encoding is a bit crappy), and maybe 10% reference stuff that i'll probably enjoy too but isn't a personally relevant movie for me.

WoW so BDA dumped BD+ for 45 million that's pretty sad really!

Actually not having it even slated for your format of choice is worse.

And yes your link sucks, fix it.

because, % of marketshare isnt the same as absolute numbers. While BRD enjoys a larger lead in Europe and Asia, the actual numbers are tiny compared to the US' allready small numbers. It might be enough to make the worldwide marketshare more a few % points in BRD favor, but this is pretty much a US fight... and being the largest single home video market by a wide margin, most people assume whoever wins the US wins the world.

The fact that both Sony and Toshiba are doing the majority of their crazy deals (BOGO, 99 dollar player, get 10 free movies with purchase, etc) here in the states seems to indicate that they feel this way too. Heck, the 5 free movie deals just showed up to Europe last month, nearly 9+ months after they were effective here.

So now that the link is fixed for the lazy lol can we move on to why a supposing 100 million dollar copy protection patent would sale for half that? I find it funny that Macrovision was able to purchase this from Sony and the BDA. A company that stood to gain millions in royalies from other studios licensing the tech. Or are you guys going to shrug this off as well?

Great let's talk about it.

1) This has nothing to do with Sony. Macrovision acquired certain technologies from Cryptography Research Inc. including the Self-Protecting Digital Content (SPDC) technology used to form BD+ Blu-ray anti-piracy protection.

2) Cryptography Research will in return receive $45M in cash plus Macrovision stock (based on performance milestones).

3) BD+ is not being dumped and this will have no effect on the continued use of BD+ for Blu-ray titles.

4) In the recent press release from Macrovision they specifically want "to expand our capabilities to address emerging standards such as Blu-ray".

5) While BD+ may or may not have been craked, the technology was created for the speicifc intention of virtual code which can change disc by disc. Future discs can have different keys and algorithms which may take additional time to crack.

I really don't see the negative here.

Well, let's see I've been told that "I suck" "that I fail" "to STFU" when all I did was post some news I found. So, who's really trolling here? Also, I said nothing negative in my post until the Blu defendors started attacking me (as usual lately). So I'm sorry for poking a little fun at them and calling them lazy since they couldn't scroll down and read a link. Personally, I don't think I should be the one apologizing here! Oh, and do you have any proof that Indenpendence Day is not delayed? I thought not so, you "STFU" as you put it!

If this isn't the biggest flaimbait I don't know what is. This place is becoming as bad as AVS. And that's saying a lot!

Congratulations WULFER, you are the stupidest person in this thread...and that's saying a lot.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
What they're asking for is proof that the ID4 delay and the BD+ stuff are related.

I found the sale (and the low price) interesting. I don't know what to make of it, though, so I'll wait until some articles are written about it to see if it's a big deal or not.

Post news (so far, ok)
Imply that it means something bad for Blu-ray whithout saying what (lightweight trolling)
Say "hey it sucks for you" (flamebait)
And implying that it has anything to do with ID4 being delayed. (outright FUD)
Asking if people are just going to ignore this news (substantial trolling)

Yeah.... not trolling.... right.

It's does suck do you object to that come on guys your really reaching now!

Availability: Release date to be announced:The release date for this DVD has not been finalized. You may order it now and we will ship it to you when it arrives. Ships from and sold by Amazon.com. Gift-wrap available.

the correct answers are

1) Ratatouille (spelled horrid, Im sure)
2) Corpse Bride

Maybe Cars, its not bad, just not as good. But you cant go wrong with 1 or 2.

Hopefully DWA puts out Antz and Over the Hedge soon. Those are good as well.

Disney Im sure will have all the Pixar movies out within a year... maybe Sony with Nightmare before Xmas (then a BRD player would be mine).

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
and in some good news for HDDVD nerds everywhere, Stark Trek: TOS season 2 will be released on HDDVD in March.

With this sort of pace, its possible the whole series will be out by next Xmas.
