and in some good news for HDDVD nerds everywhere, Stark Trek: TOS season 2 will be released on HDDVD in March.

With this sort of pace, its possible the whole series will be out by next Xmas.

Highly likely I'd say, since there are just three seasons.

I'm not as enamored with Rat as every other member here, so I'd say:

1. Happy Feet
2. Corpse Bride
3. Cars
4. Ratatouille
5. Open Season
6. Ice Age 2: The Meltdown
7. Ant Bully

I'm sure that Rat will go up my list with subsequent viewings, but at the theater it didn't do much for me. I didn't bother with Happy Feet at the theater but loved it when I bought it. Finding Nemo is my favorite Pixar flick, so I can't wait for that one on Blu Ray. I didn't like Over the Hedge too much, but that Ninja Panda movie looks promising. I'll also check out Bee Movie and see if I like that. Is Monster House out on HD yet? That was pretty decent as well.

Oh well, now that I read that, that's not what I was trying to imply for that I am sorry. I was thinking faster than I could type (I am at work). I just saw two news stories and if miss a blink it's already posted here.

Can't believe Surf's Up gets no love.

The CG is perfect, and the movie is pretty charming.
Done mockumentary style.

I should get that from Netflix this week. I haven't seen it yet. Just got Bridge to Terabithia Blu Ray, hope it looks great.

TOSHIBA and CBS Home Entertainment Stun Consumers With New 'Star Trek: The Original Series' Promotion
News - November 20, 2007 10:50 A.M.

WAYNE, N.J., Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. ("Toshiba") is kicking off 'A Stunning Offer' -- a joint promotion with CBS Home Entertainment for the launch of "Star Trek: The Original Series: First Season" exclusively on the HD DVD/DVD Combo disc and the availability of a limited edition "Star Trek" Phaser remote control.

Starting today, when consumers buy any Toshiba HD DVD player and the "Star Trek: The Original Series: First Season" HD DVD/DVD Combo boxed set, they can receive a free limited edition "Star Trek" Phaser remote by mail. With an approximate retail value of $69.95, the 3 in 1 Universal Phaser remote has been preprogrammed to work with any Toshiba HD DVD player and features special sound and light effects from the series.

To promote this unique "Star Trek" and HD DVD offering over the coming months, Toshiba and CBS will be running online banner advertisements and print ads. The ads highlight images from the original "Star Trek" series and explain how fans of the movies can obtain one of the unique Phaser remote controls.

"HD DVD is taking 'The Original Series' where no 'Trek' episode has gone before," said Louis Masses, Director Business Development, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group. "The leading-edge technologies in HD DVD players are taking 'Star Trek: The Original Series' to a truly new dimension for fans. Partnering with CBS, we are excited to be bringing this landmark TV series into the homes of fans and to be developing a promotion that appealed specifically to the 'Trek' fan."

This boxed 10-disc set offers "Trek" fans the opportunity to now experience the series like never before in high definition. Meticulously remastered from the original camera negative, each classic episode is presented in pristine condition with new state-of-the-art digital visual effects and a new 5.1 soundtrack. Both the DVD and HD DVD presentations include rare on-set home movie footage, an inside perspective on what it took to transport "Trek" into the 21st century ... and much more. Showcasing graphics with a 3D look and feel, the interactive 'Starfleet Access' menu interface will allow HD viewers to activate icons on seven episodes to provide such features as picture-in-picture video commentaries and an interactive tour of the Starship Enterprise.

In addition to visually experiencing "Star Trek" in a new way through HD DVD, fans of "The Original Series" can enjoy the classic "Star Trek" musical score and sound effects in advanced audio, immersing fans in the complete HD experience. For ultimate convenience, the Combo boxed set features HD DVD on one side of the disc and standard DVD on the other.

"We believe that 'Star Trek' fans will truly appreciate viewing 'The Original Series' on HD DVD," said Jeffrey Nemerovski, Vice President of Business Development for CBS Home Entertainment. "'Star Trek' and HD DVD are a perfect combination because with Toshiba HD DVD players 'Trek' lovers can take their passion for the series to a whole new level by accessing thrilling interactive and web-enabled network capabilities."

The release of "Star Trek: The Original Series" on HD DVD is one of a number of new titles coming exclusively to HD DVD from companies such as Universal, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation.

The offer expires on February 29, 2008, or while supplies last; quantities are limited. For more information and full promotion details, please visit: STARTREK.com or toshibahddvd.com.

1) Ratatouille (spelled horrid, Im sure)
2) Corpse Bride

Corpse Bride isn't CG :p

I also don't understand the appeal. It's such a lackluster movie compared to Nightmare Before Christmas. And yet it took like 10 years to make.

any reviews of star trek yet?

I want it very badly, but not if the quality isnt a big step up. I watched an episode on XBL marketplace and was mostly happy with it... but I know the quality of XBL marketplace usually isnt very good compared to HDDVD.

I know its stop motion... but its similar to a CG film in look.

I like the movie alot... but Nightmare is 100000000x better.

IGN has a review, I will try and find the link.
Was overall good, with a little bit of could be better.
Five of the episodes shine, the rest are a little average but good.
Some issues with the aspect ratio.

Like I've allways said, as soon as BRD has a release I cant say no to, Im gonna get one. That would be one of them. Right now there are alot of movies I would buy if I had a BRD player, but not anything that would make me buy one.

To be fair, other than the Matrix, and Children of Men, HDDVD doesnt have many of those that would make me buy a player either, but it was cheaper to get into (HDDVD add on).

What's the deal with the aspect ratio? I presume it's all 4:3? And were these film-sourced 4:3 when they were originally produced?

VanMardigan

You know, I got my 80GB and I'm pretty happy about it, but feel I could've waited. Not buyer's remorse, but the only reason I wanted to jump in now is that Sony seems hell bent on removing features to get their prices down and I didn't want a gimped Ps3. The gaming side isn't as important since I own an Xbox 360, but I still wanted a BC, fully equipped Ps3.

Yeah I know some don't care about BC, and most don't care about extra USB ports or memory card slots, but I do. I felt I had to jump in, and knew that I'd get enough combined gaming/movie time to make it worth it, plus I never cared about which movie studios did what movies and think this situation is stupid. I've only seen one BD on it and played only one game on it (the packed it Motorstorm), but I've been watching my dvd's on it and playing Ps2 games I missed out on, so it's getting enough usage.

If I had confidence that Sony would keep a fully featured Ps3 into next year and beyond, I'd have waited for another price drop. Like I said though, I don't really regret jumping in. Certainly the movie side isn't enough on its own, neither is the gaming side, imo. But combined (and the fact that I don't' own a Ps1/2), then the value added up in my mind.

I dont care about BC or extra ports myself, so that makes the 40GB $399 SKU awful tempting. Ill be picking one up within the next 6 months (as long as I have it before MGS4 hits). Then I do can enjoy the best of both formats.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
The new firmware upgrade for the XA2 allows for bitstreaming, so you can send out DTS HD and MA to a receiver. XA2 is easily the best HD DVD player out there. The A35 allows bitstreaming as well.

actually, its wierd.

the show is 4:3 and was film sourced 4:3.

The CG is 16:9 for the ships and whatnot. Honestly, I think this was a mistake. Leave it all 4:3.

The other wonky thing is on arena (I think thats its name, the one where Kirk fights the lizard dude and has to make a diamond cannon with rocks and such)... they opened up the frame on a few scenes (when the alien ship was bombing the planet) to 16:9 when they could (I guess nothing was in the frame at 16:9).

I thought it was wierd and a bit jarring, but not a huge deal. I honestly would have prefered to get the original untouched in 1080p.

Thats exactly the reason for my purchase. As soon as I heard they were removing features (months ago), that, plus a chance at a deal (real LOW). It was a perfect storm that was too good to pass up on.

Ew, what? That sours my potential pipe-dream purchase. I really, really like original Trek -- not enough to spend $130+ per season, mind you, but there'll be deals at some point in the format's life where this could've been a nice impulse buy for me. Not in that whacked-out state, though. I'll go for the three seasons on DVD instead.

The new Star Trek HD DVD/DVD release is all in 4:3, just like the original broadcasts.

When they were re-doing some of the effects shots, they were done in 16:9 IN CASE they were going to chop up the 4:3 originals and do the show all in 16:9 at some point (obviously this isn't the case). The new disc release cuts up the 16:9 effects shots, but doesn't compromise on what is meant to be on screen.

Take a look at some original/remastered comparisons. The show doesn't lose anything by having the effects shot in 4:3, but having the show cropped to 16:9 would lose a lot...

so its not like the jiberish I saw on XBLM? Because if the whole thing is 4:3 now, I'm all over it.

No, the XBox Live thing was apparantly a mistake and a fix is being worked on.

The HD DVD/DVD hybrid set is all 4:3.

Are you liquidating your entire collection? Sorry if you've run into some tough financial times or something.

:lol Yeah I am, sold my PS3 too but it isn't really because of tough financial times
unless you count trying to collect every dime you can in order to buy an engagement ring as tough financial times

Hopefully when I am ready to come back to HD movies the whole format war will be over.

There's no DVD-only release, except for the old 2-eps per disc.

All three seasons of the original series have been out as complete DVD sets for a few years now... If what Alcibiades says is correct, the new sets are far more appealing but still too expensive for my tastes. I could pick up all the standard DVDs for the same price as one of the new ones.

VanMardigan

On Blue Nile is where I got a gorgeous platinum engagement and wedding ring for my wife for a killer price. Looks stunning, even now two years later. Every time we get it polished I get compliments from the jewelers. She never takes it off.

btw, Bridge to Terabithia was stunning. I'm very impressed with both movies I've seen on Blu Ray. If that isn't tier 0, it should be. Too bad the movie itself is so damn depressing (I hadn't read the book before).

Breath-taking. Now to cancel my Blockbuster account seeing as how they dont rent HD DVD movies. Does Net-flix?
