Breath-taking. Now to cancel my Blockbuster account seeing as how they dont rent HD DVD movies. Does Net-flix?

It's amazing how much counfusion Blockbuster created with that announcement and their website layout where there isn't an obvious, top menu way to navigate through the HD DVD catalog.

But yes, you can rent HD DVD's online with Blockbuster.com, though I switched to Netflix myself.

Got the the Nordisk Flm edition of TMNT which has an AVC encoded bitrate of about 30mbps. The VC1 release only had some 16mbps?
Sadly the audio is only DD 640...

I'm glad I decided to wait for the Bluray exclusive release and not get the inferior HD DVD version :p

Blockbuster rents them, there is even an HDDVD section, its kinda hidden (unlike BRD section). but you'll wait forever for a new release.

The release by Nordisk Film is very bare-bone, just as I expected. Nice to finally own it in HD though. :)

I picked up the A2 and scored my first 3 HD-DVD's for a killer price/
300 for 12.50 shipped
The Departed Combo for 15 shipped
Bourne Identity for 9.25 shipped

Piss on retail, I am sticking to ebay

bu bu bu the bit rates!

Also, VC1 is more efficient than AVC anyway, so its not even a 1:1 comparison of bitrates.

I would think this is debatable. All I'll say is that I understand the original design goal of VC1 was to use less computing power than AVC to decode at the cost of efficiency.

Both codecs are great for movies, of course.

It has the English audio track, and you can turn off subtitles, right? Do you know if it's region free?

That looks pretty sweet. Any English in there? Btw, the HD DVD version has some pretty awesome HDi stuff on it. They explore the artwork designs, and the advertisements seen in the film (like the suicide pill one). Also, the PiP compares scenes with and without the cgi, sort of like on 300. I'm not even sure why I don't own this movie yet, I fell in love with it since I rented it. It just seems like it's never a part of any amazon special or anything. :(

Has anyone here seen Breakfast Club on HD-DVD?

I rented it for the female.

It was ok, I sorta like the movie except for the hilariously bad smoking scene.

The video is decent. Its not exceptional or anything, I would say about as good as say Dazed and confused.

Yep, english audio, subtitles can be turned off.

Hmm, on the disc it says Region 2. IIRC movies have been labeled region "x" before and worked on other regions players.

highdefdigest posted a review of the die hard collection... mixed bag

4.0 gets great ratings for picture and sound, but the first two sound pretty poor transfers. Thats a real shame as the real reason for me picking up the set is for the first two movies. The first one is just fantastic, and the second is a guilty pleasure.

Great injustice! Die Hard is one of my favorite franchises, if not my favorite, ever.

This bungled series of events is the reason I opted for the special two-disc unrated DVD edition of Live Free or Die Hard. Sorry, Fox, but I won't buy a gimped BD release. Give me at least as good as the DVD buyers are getting or forget it.

As for the poor transfers of the earlier movies, I guess I'll stick with the SD-DVDs I already have.

Even if the transfers aren't as good as the fourth one, the BD would still be better than the SD-DVDs...

BD/HD DVD at it's worst is still slightly better than DVD at it's absolute best.

Watched Kingdom of Heaven last night in full surround and HD glory.
Wow. Restored my faith in MPEG-2. ;)

United States.
Yes, I'm worried about the region thing... but as you said, sometimes the labels aren't completely truthful.

Know anyone with a US PS3? :)

As far as I'm concerned, Sony's decision to incorporate a bit rate meter in their PS3 Blu-ray player is one of the worst things to have ever happened to the home theater hobby.
I'm starting to believe Zyber @ highdefdigest.

I expected it as it is, and they still look great compared to dvd and LFODH looks amazing and sounds even better.
After the Ocean boxed set ended up pretty much the same way I braced myself.

Both of those linked articles are brilliant. I'm extremely pleased that I went format neutral, and would encourage anyone with the available resources to do it as well. The fact that I now don't give a rat's ass which studio produced the movies I like is very liberating. It's like dvd all over again, since I NEVER knew which studios did what movies until I pickud up my HD DVD add-on and had to figure out which of my favorite movies were actually on the format.

My wife, as well, has embraced neutrality. At first, I thought she'd hesitate in wrapping her head around the concept of exclusivity in studios and the need to own yet another gadget for HD movies. Instead, she's very pleased that when she sees a new release at the movies or on dvd, there will likely be a high def equivalent we can watch, regardless of format.

I just can not go with the neutrality and peach and flowers thing no matter how I tried.
There are too many movies that will never see the light of day if this war goes on and also I still fully believe that both formats as a whole will die out far far too soon if it drags on.
But again that is something that has been rehashed over and over.

On the high-definition disc front, "Shrek the Third" was the hands-down winner on the HD DVD chart, outselling fellow debutante "Oceans 13" by a 3-to-1 margin. On the Blu-ray chart, "Ratatouille" remained at No. 1, while "Ocean's 13" bowed at No. 2. "Ocean's Thirteen" is one of the few recent new releases available on both high-definition disc formats; even so, total sales were about 17% less than the HD DVD-only version of "Shrek the Third."

So basically:

HD DVD

1. Shrek 3
2. Ocean's 13

Blu-ray
1. Ratatouille
2. Ocean's 13

Also, we can assume the following regarding sales:

-possible Ratatouille position-
Shrek 3 100.00
-possible Ratatouille position-
Ocean's 13 Blu-ray - 49.66
Ocean's 13 HD DVD - 33.34

Ratatouille (in it's 2nd week) came out on top of Ocean's 13 Blu-ray, but it's uncertain if it also came above Shrek 3 (which would be very impressive).

Also, Blu-ray had a buy one get one free that week, so we don't know yet if Ocean's 13 on HD DVD sold enough to make the top 10, but Shrek 3 is definitely in the top 2.

How do you know Shrek was 1 overall? (though likely)

we don't, that's extrapolation is only considering those 3 titles... Ratatouille could very well be #1 for the second straight week (which is why I mentioned that we don't know yet whether it came above Shrek 3 in sales).

If Warner decides to stay neutral or go HD DVD after the next quarter, I'll pick up an XA2.

We should know more about what Warner's plans are come January. I'm not sure where or how that HD-DVD rumor started, but it seems to have been a load of crap.
