Transformers did nothing for HD so you are 0 and 2 so far.

Other than sell 200k discs, pull the ratios even for a week, and pretty much save HD DVD in mindshare and software sales from getting completely obliterated? I mean, can you imagine if that movie had been released on Blu Ray? I'd say it's your assessment that is pure garbage.

It did not do the job period.
No ballet dancing around it, no fluffing it up, no bullshit rationalization will change that.
It was a hired assassin meant to turn the tide.
It was hugely pushed all around and it did not get the job done.
No more and no less.
The ratio was close for ONE week and close is not a win.
If it had been released on blu it would have sold more just like every other movie out there.
If it had been released on blu hd backers would still be insisting that HD is winning and pointing to fantasy land what if bullshit so the effect would not be that different.
My assessment is flawless.

No, seriously, I post a lot here, but you've lost it. You're officially somewhere else. hired assassin? It was going to single handedly turn the tide? And if it had been released on Blu Ray, it would be the best selling HD movie right now, period. Without Transformers, the ratios would not be where they are right now, so to suggest that it had no impact is silly, and to do it in such an incredibly overdramatic manner is hilarious.

Actually you have convinced me that I was slightly wrong.
It did have one effect ( at least I would think so...)
That effect is that it should go on to show exactly how stupid any studio would be to go HD exclusive.
I stand corrected.

Quick question, hopefully someone can help me

I'm wanting to upgrade my 7 year old Onkyo 5.1 setup I bought back in High School, with a new setup.

I'm looking currently at this receiver
http://reviews.cnet.com/av-receivers/onkyo-tx-sr605-silver/4505-6466_7-32430580.html
It's susposed to take the new lossless sound formats, but then I read not much uses it yet, and as of now I only have a PS3 that would even think of using it. I don't care about the upcoverting built into it.

The other option is this
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onky...sem/rpsm/oid/177422/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
Supposedly the PS3 can output the lossless audio to it?

Anyway, i'm lost, any help would be appreciated :)
I don't consider myself an audiophile (otherwise I would not be this lost)
And i've been very happy with my Onkyo 5.1.
Also, this is for a bedroom.

Awesome. You'd be more convincing if you hit enter just a few more times. Maybe three more line breaks, and you'd be golden.

Hey, I'm finally going 5.1 with a nice black friday deal from best buy on a sony receiver, sony subwoofer, and sony speakers. Welcome me to 1997! Woo!

I have a question that perhaps someone here might be able to help me with. The receiver is a Sony STRDG510, as I was looking for a basic 5.1 receiver (my first), and this one at $99 shipped sounded pretty good! My question is whether this receiver will "side convert" all video inputs (analog/digital) to the single HDMI video output. I was not expecting it to do so at this price level, and especially because I've read that neither the STRDG500, nor the more expensive STRDG800, did so. However, I found this post on another message board:

I bought that Sony-STRDG510 a fortnight ago, and it is a great receiver - it is a hefty piece of kit though, and no lightweight!

Xbox via component, Wii via component, and Sky HD via HDMI & optical all output through the receiver via a single HDMI cable to a Sony flatscreen I have.

Also, the manual for the STRDG510 indicates that "You can watch the selected input image when you connect the MONITOR OUT (component video) or HDMI OUT jack to a TV or projector."

This isn't as definitive as the forum post above, but seems to imply the same thing. I'd like to figure this out before I get the receiver, as I'm putting together a mass cable order from monoprice, and want to make sure I have everything I'll need, and nothing I don't. Thanks!

I got two question for the UK people in this thread.

1. Does PoTC Curse of the Black Pearl still come with the slipcase ?

2. Does the UK Release have the rating on the side of the slipcase and the Bluray case ?

looking at it now.

1. yes, cardboard sleeve. has full normal box underneath that is basically identical to the sleeve, so if you want the sleeve, or particularly don't want the sleeve, you're good either way

2. yes, both the UK BBFC rating and that german octagon thing. Slipcase and main case are identical as far as I can tell. except the slipcase doesn't have the disney hologram (thats on the case) and it does have a sticker about 'special two disc set' which the main case doesn't

and although its stated as region B on the case, it plays fine on a region A player.

Yes, it should. But make sure you set your Wii to 480p before connecting it to your receiver or you're fucked.

And if something isn't working, just backtrack carefully and make sure its connections and selected inputs/outputs match. And it's 1080i.

Seriously? That's awesome! I still have trouble believing it, as the (any video input)-->HDMI output functionality is couched as a selling point of the higher end 900 and 1000-series. 1080i is no problem - my set is 720p. My Wii is set at 480p, but just curious, why would that make a big difference?

First tragedy, then farce.
anyone looking to get a reciever needs to get 4 or more hdmi inputs. spend a few hundred more now, because its cheaper than buying a new reciever in 3 years b/c you ran out of inputs.

What's the cheapest receiver with 4 hdmi inputs? I dunno, I only have one HDMI device right now, and I don't see any others on my horizon until next-gen gaming, except for maybe a dedicated BRD player. This receiver is only $99, which is a minimal investment.

Yes because we know that there have been BOGOs ever week all year.
It is the only reason that HD is losing right now even though the week after transformers there was no bogo and blu won easily and even though blu has won weeks where there have been NO new releases easily with no sales.
We were doing so well together too and then you had to go there.

you can always buy a switch later on.

I've just bought a receiver so it'll be a few years before I buy again. Then I'll make sure to get one that handles DTS-MA and TrueHD over bitstream, and also ideally with 4 in, 2 out HDMI sockets. Those kinds of things are still a little immature, so I just bought one that handles PCM well.

Assuming that that receiver only does straight conversion of component to HDMI...a lot of sets can't handle 480i over HDMI, so if you have it set to 480i and your TV can't deal, you'll have a black screen and a hard time setting it to 480p :p

Come now, stop changing the argument to suit your needs.

You said, in rather hyperbolic language, that Transformers failed to do what it was supposed to do. That's the specific statement I was responding to. (And I also disagree with it, for the reasons Van Mardigan stated.)

BD squeaked a win over HD DVD that week (51:49) only because of a shrewdly timed BOGO. In the end, that "victory" only amounts to a nice press release and a talking point for the BDA. The takeaway message for the rest of us is that Blu-ray still has a fight on its hands, despite what the BDA would have you believe.

I would be interested to know about the second one also, it seems like a cheap but solid way to get a 7.1 system.

WTH? Is it true there is no unrated Live Free or Die Hard versions in HD?

Unfortunately, that is the case. FOX blames the situation on "lack of time." Well, they put the unrated cut on DVD, so what the hell?

Buy the DVD, the super-nice two-disc set in the sexy tin case. It looks great for an SD-DVD and you get to see the movie in all its glory.

I've been procrastinating about getting a 5.1 surround system. It is even more of pain than putting together a new PC or getting an HDTV. I'm in an apartment, so it isn't like I need mega power.

The only thing that I can see becoming a pain is getting "perfect" speaker positioning to match the acoustics of your room, unless you have a dedicated home theater room.

Just the fact that the 3 front speakers (Left, Right, and Center) should be all be at the same height (ear-level) is difficult, because you'll have to put the center speaker either above or below the TV, and thus ruining whateveraudiophilescallit (forgot the term)... and then Left and Right speakers need to be exact distance away from the TV and at certain angles (22 to 30 degrees) from listening position to get proper stereo-imaging... there's always bound to be a piece of furniture, shelf, or door that just get in the way of achieving this.

Or maybe it's just me.

Exactly. "Fucked" is the term I use to describe having to move everything, disconnect it all, find the original composite cables, check the settings, reconnect to the component on a wall mounted TV, set to 480p, disconnect and start again with the receiver.

So annoyed. Yet completely my fault. Actually, ever since then, the 480p setup screen on my receiver has been wonky. Must investigate.

Still on the sound system theme...
I was reading about this one http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Onky...sem/rpsm/oid/177422/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

And according to a cnet review it does not pass audio via HDMi.
Is this a deal breaker?
I am looking for an inexpensive 7.1 or 5.1 system for an apartment so I am more interested in clean and dynamic sound over heavy bass and raw power.
1080p HDMi 1.3 pass through I suppose is the only really important factor, I do not need a built in dvd player obviously ( though it wouldn't hurt for cds or whatever but it is easy enough to pick up a dirt cheap cd changer )
I have the PS3 as my main, 360 Elite also (w hd add on), have the wii too but it is a non issue as far as this goes.
Would rather get an all in one set much like the Onkyo just for ease of set up and then I can always swap speakers out here and there but not a must.
Price ceiling is 500 though 400 is more comfortable considering again it is an apartment.

Actually, yeah, I hope onyx and djk come in and help us out. I'll probably pick up a receiver next year. It'll probably be the onkyo, since I want to be able to play TrueHD, etc. and need hdmi at 1080p.

That one doesn't pass HDMI audio, doesn't upconvert, and doesn't decode HD formats. I'm not sure why one would choose that system over the sony I bought, unless you prefer the onkyo name. Is 7.1 a particularly big deal absent the HD audio formats?

I bought this sony receiver for $99: http://www.fatwallet.com/redirect/b...eiver&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1166840609689

This subwoofer for $99: http://www.fatwallet.com/redirect/b...27&st=subwoofer&type=product&id=1172277278160

And these speakers for $25, to go with some I already have: http://www.fatwallet.com/redirect/b...167&st=speakers&type=product&id=1172277277943

Jesus! And Canadian retailers wonder why we keep giving them the collective finger. Speaking of which, I saw a sweet Samung 50 inch for 2800 at Visions the other day, and found the same TV online for nearly 1000 dollars less in the States. Ridiculous.

Oh yeah, to stay on topic...Rob Enderle is a moron.

It's a small thing, but it irks me. :p

Is Close Encounters out on Blu Ray? I didn't see it at the store last week. How is the picture quality? I'd expect Spielberg flicks to have quality that matches the Kubrick discs.

Yep.
For some reason Best Buy has had it in the dvd section the last two times that I have been there.
I have only watched the director's cut but it is honestly breathtaking.
