This is Shrek 3 week, yes?

Vgamer said:I have a quick question. I am thinking of getting this Amazon HD-DVD player deal but I am a little confused about my surround sound setup. I have an older surround sound system that does not have any HDMI ports (it does have Optical and Digital ports though). My hdtv has an HDMI port however as does this player. So if i hooked the HDTV to the HD-DVD player with the HDMI cable how would I get the sound to my Receiver?
VanMardigan said:The player has an optical out, so you set the video to go out through HDMI, and the audio via optical to your receiver.
And mousey, it's Shrek 3 vs. Blu Ray BOGO.
StoOgE said:video = hdmi
ausio = optical
itll output everything as a 1.5mbs dts stream. so your reciever needs to do dts.
VanMardigan said:Does that really make any sense to you, or is that one of those "why can't all countries just get along" type posts? We KNOW why neither format wants to disappear, so your "solution" is naive, at best. Lovely to think about, but naive.
mrklaw said:If only Warner would release Matrix and V for Vendetta on bluray it'd make my job a whole lot easier.
I know one of the problems was you had to set the player's internal clock before logging on for the update, don't know if that will help you. As much as I want a standalone, I'm glad I don't have to worry about doing the firmware updates, since MS just feeds those to me through Live.Burning a disc didn't work, hooking it up to my router didn't work either!
Chiggs said:I thought Matrix was on Blu-ray?
Fëanor said:Man, screw firmware updates! Burning a disc didn't work, hooking it up to my router didn't work either! So I just got off the phone talking with one customer service dude from Toshiba, 3-5 days of my update disc:lol Damn you HD and your lame firmware update ways!

In my boredom on this incredbly slow day at work, I dared the AVSforum. It's unofficial but it seems to come from a trustworthy source.
Blu Pac-Mans keep on munching.
Dave Vaughn said:66:34....Take that one to the bank. Shrek III came in first, but sales were about 1/2 of what the Rat did.
Go the extra mile and get him HD DVD + HDMI cables.Days like these... said:I just picked up an A3 for my dad at BB for Xmas. I went by my dad's earlier and he was watching Blood Diamond on his dvd/vcr combo player connected through composite cables to his brand new 52" 1080p LCD. I really couldn't bear to watch. He was so happy with his big screen I really couldnt say anything. J6P indeed! I'm sure he's gonna love his A3.

djkimothy said:Not surprised about Shrek's performance. I never really liked the first one TBH. It overstayed its welcome with the sequals.
VanMardigan said:Blasphemy!! Like Spiderman, 2 was the best. And like Spiderman, 3 was sub par.
Days like these... said:Yeah, you're right otherwise he might hook it up with a coaxial cable.
maharg said:Or he'll end up paying $100 for Monster HDMI Ultra Platinum Gold Plated Edition like my mother in law did.
Glad you liked it, I think it got lost in the shuffle but was really great.VanMardigan said:Blasphemy!! Like Spiderman, 2 was the best. And like Spiderman, 3 was sub par.
btw, I watched Surf's Up and really liked it. I don't know what the complaints about PQ were about, but it looked amazing. Only a couple scenes were they added the filter to make it seem like old footage looked bad, but those scenes weren't that long.
Ignatz Mouse said:I really liked Shrek 1 and 2 but skipped three on the advice of friends of mine (who loved the first two). I'm not surprised it's doing so-so.
StoOgE said:i couldnt stand any of them... its filled with scarry movie like 'comedy'...
'omg, its like the matrix but its a cartoon, lolz'
StoOgE said:surfs ups ads made me stay far far away. i may have to rent the dvd
Eh, I thought they were funny throw-aways. I'l probably rent the third one sometime.
Zoe said:Oh no, Avex is starting to jerk J-pop fans around. What are they thinking
They're releasing Otsuka Ai's latest concert in both formats on 1/1, but AAA's concert on 1/9 will only be released on HD-DVD.
dallow_bg said:They attempt to create a realistic world in Surf's Up.
Just with penguins.
I'm just saying that Shrek is much more fantastical than Surf's Up. It's less of a 'do anything' type cartoon.VanMardigan said:??
Were we watching the same movie? The conversations were contemporary, everything else was pure fantasy, shot documentary style.
purnoman3000 said:Just wondering as I don't really follow the sales numbers on this thing, but did all those people buying the HD-A2 at a low cost actually increase disc sales or did they just buy it and run. Did they just go with their cheap player and free discs or did they buy their own and that reflected in the sales. I don't think the average joe picking up a 99$ player is all too keen on +30$ discs and probably is just playing regular DVD's in it without an HDMI cable. I feel that while the price on it may be mass market, the knowledge about them isn't.

We can extrapolate the numbers from the ratios.StoOgE said:we dont get absolute numbers, just a ratio, so its hard fo say. my gut says overall sales are picking up, and that big sale is helping hddvd not get completely trounced by brd holiday lineup and bogo offers...
but unless we start getting npd like numbers, who knows.
edit: i think the lack of packed in hdmi sucks, but was likely done so retail partners can upsell a 100 dollar cable... keep your retail side happy
dallow_bg said:We can extrapolate the numbers from the ratios.
True, but so far, things not in the top 10 are probably sales of 2K and lower. Much lower.StoOgE said:but only the top 10. and only if we get sales for the #1 movie, which isnt allways given. considering weeks where hddvd owned the top 10 but was still outsold (knocked ups release) what we have isnt enough data to see the overall effect of the 99 dollar sale.

Yah, I noticed the icon when I popped it in. At first I thought that the PS3 couldn't read the disc, but noticed the title next to the new icon and thought it was cool. I didn't try out the features that allowed you to distinguish between versions. Just saw the Director's Cut. Was that considered definitive?
SanjuroTsubaki said:I'm back. My last outing here I was called a troll on debating selling my PS3 for a second time. I never ended up selling the PS3 however I never plugged it in or used the damn thing. However with a power surge killing my old HD and my insurance company giving me a nice check has resulted in me picking up a beautiful 1080p Sharp Aquos earlier this week. My PS3 has been having a nice Blu Ray revival with Spider-Man 3 and Casino Royale looking absolutely stunning on the tv.
Few things though...
1. Where is Batman Begins? Has there been any new word on a release?
2. I noticed Robocop has made its way to Blu Ray. Has anyone here picked that up? Curious on the quality.
3. Besides Blade Runner, is there anything else that should be on my radar for the next couple months?
Oh..and there is no way Blu Ray can win without Transformers and Shrek 3...
_leech_ said:So where's the Nielson data?
I was just kidding anyway. Ratatouille is actually the one Blu Ray I personally own. On Comcast they have Robocop in the free HD category I just wasn't sure how better the Blu Ray would be, but I do know the picture is grainy anyway due to the style of the film.OokieSpookie said:Shrek 3 sold less than half of what Ratatouille did it's first week so I would say that assessment is about full of shit.
Transformers did nothing for HD so you are 0 and 2 so far.
Batman Begins will be announced to release near the time that The Dark Knight hits theaters. Most likely announced at CES in January. Count on it.
Robocop is a toss up.
It does look better than the dvd but it is not a top tier either way.
As far as what should be on your radar that would depend what you are into.

I couldn't find any good deals for today online for the local stores so I didn't bother getting into the madness.
