I have a quick question. I am thinking of getting this Amazon HD-DVD player deal but I am a little confused about my surround sound setup. I have an older surround sound system that does not have any HDMI ports (it does have Optical and Digital ports though). My hdtv has an HDMI port however as does this player. So if i hooked the HDTV to the HD-DVD player with the HDMI cable how would I get the sound to my Receiver?

The player has an optical out, so you set the video to go out through HDMI, and the audio via optical to your receiver.

And mousey, it's Shrek 3 vs. Blu Ray BOGO.

video = hdmi
ausio = optical

itll output everything as a 1.5mbs dts stream. so your reciever needs to do dts.

I know, I wasn't commenting on your numbers, I was checking to see that this was Shrek week. The week lag in numbers often confuses me.

Some of those unrated Die Hard changes suck. I mean, who prefers the unrated "Hundreds of thousands of people get killed by cars every year. It's just like four more." to "I was out of bullets."? Gah.

Does that really make any sense to you, or is that one of those "why can't all countries just get along" type posts? We KNOW why neither format wants to disappear, so your "solution" is naive, at best. Lovely to think about, but naive.

mostly just wishful thinking :) but honestly, a dual format *player* future might be good for consumers, but I think for the format owners the result would be the same as one side or the other winning - if all players can play both formats, studios will just pick one. The only reason there are 'neutral' studios now is becuase there are players out there that will only play one format

at this point half of me is watching this pantomime unfold, the other is trying to resist buying a HDDVD player. If only Warner would release Matrix and V for Vendetta on bluray it'd make my job a whole lot easier.

Man, screw firmware updates! Burning a disc didn't work, hooking it up to my router didn't work either! So I just got off the phone talking with one customer service dude from Toshiba, 3-5 days of my update disc:lol Damn you HD and your lame firmware update ways!

VanMardigan

66:34? Better than I thought with the BOGO's. I want to see the software to see how some movies did. HD DVD needs to get this to at least 60/40. At year's end, it'll probably be 61/39 SI still, unless Blu keeps selling 65/35 and better.

Burning a disc didn't work, hooking it up to my router didn't work either!
I know one of the problems was you had to set the player's internal clock before logging on for the update, don't know if that will help you. As much as I want a standalone, I'm glad I don't have to worry about doing the firmware updates, since MS just feeds those to me through Live.

Chiggs said:

Not yet. Theoretically, but Warner has been holding back certain releases until all the interactive stuff in Blu-ray is done. I imagine they'll use some of these to bolster the slow months in the Spring. Which means expect announcements in January.

Stll better than owning a new $600 Samsung player, bring home Spiderman 3, and watching as it refuses to run the disc because its incompitable. Damn you BD and your lame rushing to market before features were standarized.

Thought it would be lower with Shrek 3 in the market.

Is this the guy you're quoting from?

66:34....Take that one to the bank. Shrek III came in first, but sales were about 1/2 of what the Rat did.

Not surprised about Shrek's performance. I never really liked the first one TBH. It overstayed its welcome with the sequals.

I just picked up an A3 for my dad at BB for Xmas. I went by my dad's earlier and he was watching Blood Diamond on his dvd/vcr combo player connected through composite cables to his brand new 52" 1080p LCD. I really couldn't bear to watch. He was so happy with his big screen I really couldnt say anything. J6P indeed! I'm sure he's gonna love his A3.

Blasphemy!! Like Spiderman, 2 was the best. And like Spiderman, 3 was sub par.

btw, I watched Surf's Up and really liked it. I don't know what the complaints about PQ were about, but it looked amazing. Only a couple scenes were they added the filter to make it seem like old footage looked bad, but those scenes weren't that long.

Hahah. To each his own. I was so put off with the first, that I really didn't think much of the second, in Shrek that is... It was just too corny. Plus Mike Myers is a Leafs fan. So...

I haven't seen the third Spiderman but I'll follow everyone's advice and really not bother.

Glad you liked it, I think it got lost in the shuffle but was really great.

They were going for that old film effect look for certain shots.

Oh no, Avex is starting to jerk J-pop fans around. What are they thinking :(

They're releasing Otsuka Ai's latest concert in both formats on 1/1, but AAA's concert on 1/9 will only be released on HD-DVD.

The ads sucked, but I'm glad I rented it. Based on your Shrek comments, you may not like the modern humor of Surf's Up.

Eh, I thought they were funny throw-aways. I'l probably rent the third one sometime.

If you liked the eddie murphy/mike myers/antonio banderas dynamic (like I did), then that's still there. The problem is that they convolute that formula with unfunny new characters like justin timberlake's character, the stupid magician, and the lame princesses. Had they run the storyline without trying to introduce those dumb characters, the film would've been as good as 2. *sigh*

Shrek 3 is a bit more over the top than Surf's Up though.

Make that way more.

They attempt to create a realistic world in Surf's Up.

Just with penguins. ;)

That's a really weird call. It certainly isn't a "demographic" decision, because I'm not really thinking AAA targets the type of Japanese person who would be getting into HD-DVD at this point.

Were we watching the same movie? The conversations were contemporary, everything else was pure fantasy, shot documentary style.

I'm just saying that Shrek is much more fantastical than Surf's Up. It's less of a 'do anything' type cartoon.

They are more realistic as in they get hurt, and aren't superhuman.
It's more plausible if the the world was really run by penguins. :)

Just wondering as I don't really follow the sales numbers on this thing, but did all those people buying the HD-A2 at a low cost actually increase disc sales or did they just buy it and run. Did they just go with their cheap player and free discs or did they buy their own and that reflected in the sales. I don't think the average joe picking up a 99$ player is all too keen on +30$ discs and probably is just playing regular DVD's in it without an HDMI cable. I feel that while the price on it may be mass market, the knowledge about them isn't.

I dunno, I was expecting the sales effect to kick in around now, but it doesn't seem to have. I know there was another B1G1 deal, but Shrek was also supposed to be a big seller for the week.

we dont get absolute numbers, just a ratio, so its hard fo say. my gut says overall sales are picking up, and that big sale is helping hddvd not get completely trounced by brd holiday lineup and bogo offers...

but unless we start getting npd like numbers, who knows.

edit: i think the lack of packed in hdmi sucks, but was likely done so retail partners can upsell a 100 dollar cable... keep your retail side happy

We can extrapolate the numbers from the ratios.

but only the top 10. and only if we get sales for the #1 movie, which isnt allways given. considering weeks where hddvd owned the top 10 but was still outsold (knocked ups release) what we have isnt enough data to see the overall effect of the 99 dollar sale.

True, but so far, things not in the top 10 are probably sales of 2K and lower. Much lower.

(if even 2K, I was being generous)

And if it's true that Shrek 3 earned number 1 with half of Rat's sales from last week.
Well...

Yah, I noticed the icon when I popped it in. At first I thought that the PS3 couldn't read the disc, but noticed the title next to the new icon and thought it was cool. I didn't try out the features that allowed you to distinguish between versions. Just saw the Director's Cut. Was that considered definitive?

so just finished watching Pirates of the Carribean - at Worlds End. Very nice, just like the other two. Strangely released in the UK/Europe before the US. Maybe the studio knows there are lots of imports and are trying to get domestic numbers up?

its marked as region B but played fine in my Japanese PS3

then afterwards, while I had the PS3 on, I had a play on the uncharted demo. Surprisingly good fun, and looked gorgeous on a 100" screen :D

Stacks and stacks of Sony BluRay players at my BB. Only about half the amount of Toshiba HDDVD players.

And I won't even mention the shit ton of unsold PS3s.

I'm back. My last outing here I was called a troll on debating selling my PS3 for a second time. I never ended up selling the PS3 however I never plugged it in or used the damn thing. However with a power surge killing my old HD and my insurance company giving me a nice check has resulted in me picking up a beautiful 1080p Sharp Aquos earlier this week. My PS3 has been having a nice Blu Ray revival with Spider-Man 3 and Casino Royale looking absolutely stunning on the tv.

Few things though...

1. Where is Batman Begins? Has there been any new word on a release?

2. I noticed Robocop has made its way to Blu Ray. Has anyone here picked that up? Curious on the quality.

3. Besides Blade Runner, is there anything else that should be on my radar for the next couple months?

Oh..and there is no way Blu Ray can win without Transformers and Shrek 3...;)

Shrek 3 sold less than half of what Ratatouille did it's first week so I would say that assessment is about full of shit.
Transformers did nothing for HD so you are 0 and 2 so far.
Batman Begins will be announced to release near the time that The Dark Knight hits theaters. Most likely announced at CES in January. Count on it.

Robocop is a toss up.
It does look better than the dvd but it is not a top tier either way.
As far as what should be on your radar that would depend what you are into.

I was just kidding anyway. Ratatouille is actually the one Blu Ray I personally own. On Comcast they have Robocop in the free HD category I just wasn't sure how better the Blu Ray would be, but I do know the picture is grainy anyway due to the style of the film.

I couldn't find any good deals for today online for the local stores so I didn't bother getting into the madness.

Frys has a bunch of fox stuff for 13.99 which is best at the moment I think.

After some purchasing downtime, I picked up/ordered several Blu-ray discs this week... 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Fly and 28 Days Later for myself + The Phantom of the Opera for my wife. No idea how any of them are yet (The Fly and 28 Days Later were ordered courtesy of the $13.99 frys.com Fox sale), but I'm going to check out 2001 later tonight.

Has anyone seen The Fly yet? I can't find any legitimate feedback on the BRD release anywhere.
