First review of Dragon's Lair for BD is online.

http://dvd.themanroom.com/dvd-review.php?id=519

It's the first title that heavily uses BD-J to the fullest.

The HD DVD version has been delayed without an updated release date.

Um, is it real BD-J or faked like in Descent? If you can't turn off the PIP it's faked...

What Descent did was just put two versions of the movie on the disc - one with the PiP and one without. They don't mention if you can turn it off or on in that review.

"Real BD-J?" Don't confuse BD-J with the Blu-ray profile specifications. There is enough misinformation on the subject as is. I'm assuming it's using Profile 1.0 since there won't be any 1.1 discs out until Oct.

So basically it's faked PiP? That would explain why the HD-DVD version is delayed as they'd have to do a new version of the disc if they want to do real PiP with dual video streams.

I don't know if there are a lot of people that thought, "I'm gonna buy a PS3 to watch Blu-Ray movies" as much as there are people that thought, "Hey, I've got a PS3 now...I think I'll buy some Blu-Rays instead of DVDs."

If there were a large chunk of the former, you'd think the sales would be higher. :\

I suspect there's a fair number (like myself) who bought it for both.

We get it. BDJ is not as developed as iHD. Get over yourself already. No one cares.

Again, don't confuse BD-J (which all BD players have) with a secondary video decoder (which BD1.1+ players have)

HD DVD had its best week in months, and it still got creamed 2:1 (80k vs 40k). I had predicted that HD DVD would outsell Blu-ray the week of March 27 since it had Children of Men and a better version of Happy Feet.

So much for amazon being a good indicator..

I got a brand-new copy of The Prestige on Blu Ray today for free. One of my co-workers has a cousin at Buena Vista who sends him a box full of movies from time to time, and there just happened to be a copy of The Prestige on BD in with the DVDs. Seeing how I'm the only person he knows with a BD player, he gave it to me. Haven't seen the movie, but I wasn't going to turn down a free movie!

OK, finally HD DVD is starting to be on the move again:

Thanks to Children of Men (which just made the Top 25 on amazon.com) and Matrix, it seems to finally be inching towards overtaking Blu-ray...

who thought some boxoffice bomb would even be this popular on the format? Matrix I can sorta understand, but I'm still surprised it's making waves considering it's an expensive catalog set (would have sold more copies separately I think, though probably less profit for Warner)...

It is a great movie and might be the best transfer out there so you got a good pick up

It's not funny, it's sad. Normally I don't like to partake in the whole, "HAHA" Nelson thing, but after his whole, "I HATE Sony" irrational explosion it just is a little funny to see what actually happened happen.

I only really root for Blu-Ray because I have a Blu-Ray player. I don't buy a lot of disks, but I do like the way HD movies look on my set vs. SD movies. So yeah, teh comedie.

You must admit. Whatever joy you are feeling is being offset by the creepy feeling of agreeing with Fortified Concept. It is like going to a rally over some political issue and then the KKK shows up and supports the exact same issue you are there for.

I finally watched Casino Royale on BRD last night. WOW. I can't wait until more big releases like Spiderman, Spiderman 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 1&2 and Matrix are finally released.

So, how long until Universal concedes? I think they have one more holiday left ("Comes with 10 FREE movies!") before giving in.

The free movie offer comes from Universal, Warner and Paramount, not just Universal alone.

top25pb4.gif

Casino Royale...far from 100 000 discs sold...

Pretty low numbers all around for both formats.

That chart is wrong completely. NO WAY Casino Royale only sold 28K Blu-ray disc. NO WAY!!!!

Blu-ray movies all around sold something like 85K disc in that one week. And the increase from the previous week was like a 40K unit increase.

Well yes, that data is from the first week of release (through the 18th), I don't think Sony announced 100k discs *shipped* until a week or so after that. (The Sony press release is dated on the 27th: Read it here.)

And yes, the numbers are low - think about how much better off we would be if HD DVD had done the right thing and thrown in the towel before it had started (you know, like Sony and Philips did when they were outmatched before DVD was launched)! It's a damn shame that Toshiba and MS decided to foist this format war on us...at least next gen discs are supposedly tracking better than DVD did when it was announced.

if those numbers are real, there is NO WAY any studios is even thinking about going neutral or switching sides... do they really think DVD will be supplanted in 3 years?

:lol

both formats are complete losers right now... for all this talk about "dominating HD DVD", you'd think there would be significant differences in the numbers... Disney just said a couple of weeks ago that the consumer was deciding on Blu-ray, apparently they weren't talking about any of their movies...

Please don't compare UMD with Blu Ray or HD-DVD. this is so stupid. I mean, Blu Ray and HD-DVD are completely new next generation devices. UMD was just built for the PSP. Sony didn't want to create a new standard for movies I guess..

Now that you find out that your HD format can't win, are you cheering for both formats to lose now?

People like you makes it hard for HD format to penetrate mass market. It's either your format or nothing. what a bunch of bullshit

if the format that is doing very badly (and worse every day) and only has one out of the studios supporting it exclusively were to go away, then perhaps uptake would speed up. As it is, its doing ok and tracking well compared to DVD. I don't really know why people assume new platforms will suddenly do 'DVD now' numbers when they've just launched.

I just don't get why it would have been the "right" thing for HD-DVD to throw in the towel and not Blu-Ray. Easy to say now when Blu-Ray is outselling. Could've said the opposite when HD-DVD was leading.

And, HD-DVD was the format voted on by the DVD Forum. It was Sony who chose to go with their own thing. Unfortunate, as the point of that body was to standardize DVD. Arguably - Sony should have placed their format in that forum for a fair vote with HD-DVD and both sides should have gone with whatever was chosen. That would've been the right thing to do to prevent this format war.

The DVD Forum exists for one thing - to standardize around the disc format called "DVD".

The DVD Forum is not some international standards organization with an agenda to standardize all optical video disc formats, present and future.

Blu-ray would never have been adopted by the DVD Forum because of the power that Toshiba wields there, given that the DVD format is essentially theirs. Because of that, all the companies working on Blu-ray split off and formed their own alliance of companies to standardize their technology.

By the time HD DVD came into being, the vast majority of the consumer electronics companies were supporting Blu-ray. We were in this situation before DVD came out, there were two optical disc standards competing, one Toshiba's, and the other Sony and Philips. A compromise was reached where Toshiba's format was essentially the one adopted, with some changes to accomodate Sony and Philips.

Similar compromise meetings happened before either next-gen disc format happened but this time, MS and Toshiba decided to go their own way. Probably because MS has more to lose with BD in the PS3 and Java as the interactivity layer for BD...even though the BDA adopted VC-1 to try to get MS into their camp.

Don't believe me? Ask yourself why the essentially the only consumer electronics company making HD DVD drives is Toshiba...there are a lot more options if you wanted to pick up a Blu-ray player.

That's a pretty interesting statement considering that that chinese company (shincon, shico, shicon or whatever) which is PRETTY huge in the DVD player business has announced plans to produce HD-DVD players.

Something is off with these numbers.

You add up the Blu Ray titles 2007 sales on the top 25 chart and you get around 210K sold.

You look at the Nielson data and in that time frame (which doesn't even show january sales) shows 510K Blu Ray discs sold.

Someone is wrong by about 300K. :lol

Call me when they hit stores - it's a last ditch effort for Toshiba to get their format out there.

Usually the arrival of uber cheap commodity players means the end of profitability on hardware for the other CE companies. Since Toshiba gets royalties on those units (and they are their only competition) I guess they don't really care if they get undercut.
