and we aren't getting the sales breaks that the US is. I suppose Toshiba is wisely spending its efforts on their primary market.

the best we have is the new E30, and we're cheering that you can buy it for only £199. Thats $400 and we're happy.

Is there a trick to getting the update on the toshiba A2 over ethernet to work? It always says it can't find the server. Also, do all A2's take forever to boot up or is it just mine? I am pretty sure my 360 addon was much faster, I am seriously considering swapping for one again.

You could try downloading the ISO file, burn it to dvd and update through the disc.

I thought that was an alternative avenue to update the firmware.

I couldn't do the ethernet update for the initial one. I think there was a problem with it in the current shipped batch. I think it works ok now, though.

I just leave my HD-A2 on all the time. Apparently it's basically a linux box, so it has to do a full bootup before it can acknowledge the outside world.
I can't do that, as my tv has only one HDMI input and I use a 2 port HDMI switcher with it.

I've tried that and it didn't work either. Is there a specific thing I need to do, or is there any mention of it on Toshiba's website?

Very, very tempting. This is the only HD-DVD exclusive I really wanted on Bluray. Where did you buy it from?

Does it obtain network info (DNS, etc) from your router when you choose 'obtain automatically' or whatever? Also, have you set your time/date and connection speed? Apparently these matter.

Also, my A3 boots more slowly than my 360 add-on.

Make sure to set the clock. Usually people can't get it to work because of it.

DHCP: On
DNS: On

Don't forget to always reboot the player after changes are made.

It was confirmed by a member on AVS.
Still not sure where I can import this though..... it's also the main exclusive I want.

What Children of Men Blu Ray? And where can I buy it?!

Edit - Missed that you didn't know where to get it - but which region was it released in?

Released in Norway.
Guy in another forum said he knows where to order from but didn't post a link.... I'll PM him.

I'll be nice to see the Universal logo on the PS3.

Thanks for that - I'm just glad I'll be able to get the only two movies I've wanted to buy since this format war started (Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth) will be available on Blu Ray. Well, I guess I still want an HD Serenity.

Make sure the gateway is being configured if you are using DHCP. If it's "0.0.0.0" you might have to assign everything manually. The Toshiba DHCP client implementation sucks balls in my experience.

Yes, it does take 30 seconds or so to boot. It won't even eject the tray while it's booting, sadly.

I think Children of Men on Bluray by Nordisk Film is the worst Bluray release I have seen so far.

The image flickers, there are colour bandings and even macro blocking. Stuff I have never seen on any other movie on Bluray so far.

Perosnally I will not pick up any releases by them for a long while untill they get their things sorted.

Most people that I can see on other forums that have their hands on it say it is fine and the only downsides are lack of extras and the audio is 640kbit DD5.1

It is that bad for me when I play through the PC. But I guess a good standalone player could clean up the picture.

Can only say I have been satisfied with all other movies ive seen. But Children of Men looks like crap.

its out in Norway, denmark, finland. I might pick it up next time I'm out there. Don't know any recommended online danish stores though :)

or ask a friendly Norwegian/Danish/Finnish member to send you one.

Interesting, I didn't realize there was so many movies out in other regions that aren't out in the US. How does that work? I'm assuming it goes both ways, with Blu exclusives appearing in other regions on HD and HD exclusives (as far as the US market goes) appearing on Blu.

Does anyone have a comprehensive list of what's available on each format, regardless of region? Is the PS3 a region free Blu player? I think Van mentioned that HD DVD has no region lock, so the only reason not to import would be a shoddy transfer or price, or am I overlooking something?

Well, I'm getting it this week from Netflix (Blu Ray obviously), so I won't hate on it. I'm expecting a decent comedy.

There's a lot of information on upcoming HD DVD imports here. But there's plenty already out, like Apocalypto, Rambo, etc. Stooge should link to the site he imports from. And yes, HD DVD is region free, so the only concerns are the transfers, making sure it has an English track (I think most if not all do), and pricing.

Ps3, and Blu Ray, uses region coding, but as far as I know many movies don't bother to use it. Still, you'd have to get verification on region coding and whether it's used if you plan to import BR movies.

Cool thanks for the link :)

So why is something like Reservoir Dogs out on HD DVD in Germany but not in the US? Does that come down to the studio split, and if so, why would that only affect the US market? Or can one assume, if something is out on HDDVD or Blu in another region, that eventually it will be released on that format here?

Band of Brothers on hd dvd :D

I could have sworn Res Dogs was out on both, but I guess not.

I've been in grass-is-greener mode enough to not realize what movies I have that are exclusives.

Anyway, if it uses the same transfer, it looks pretty damned good. It's not a reference-quality tpye movie based on its style and content, but it's very intense seeing Mr Orange bleed and sweat in HD.

DJ_tet: It's a matter of which studios have distribution rights in which regions. It varies, so although a studio may be exclusive, movies it controls in one region may be controlled by another studio in another region.

It's a Lionsgate release in the US, so no HD DVD version. That's why I posted the import cover.

Interestingly, you can get the HD-DVDs of Reservoir Dogs and Lord of War from Xploited (one of, if not the best import shop in the country) for less than you'd pay at, say, Best Buy for many US-released HDs.

And since we're on the topic of import discs, the HD-DVD of Silent Hill is probably the single best-looking transfer I've ever seen in my life. An unquestionable step beyond the Blu's picture quality.

What? Haha! It's not that big of a jump, and the quality of the movie's picture on both formats isn't that great.
Certainly not in top tier transfers.

Here's a mouseover comparison of the BD and HD DVD versions.
Big difference indeed....

BD more compressions artifacts. (mpeg 2)
HD DVD softer. (vc-1)

V for Vendetta was the last of the Warner movies that Hd got that blu did not ( yet ).
Everything since then has been on both and sold more on blu.

The Paramount thing was never officially announce, but corroborated by several sources around the same time. Nobody seems to doubt it's true. The only point of contention was where the money came from-- some more zealous folks seemed to be convivned it came from Microsoft, perhaps because they like to think MS is the Big Evil Force behind the format war (which I obviously don't buy-- I think they like playing spoiler, though). That seems to have been debunked though, and Toshiba is the likely bankroller.

It wasn't a total European release I guess.

However, that site seems reliable and is really fast with shipping to the States from what I've read on other sites about them.
