o_O hey, I think i've seen you some where, aren't you the same guy who wrote like millions of UMD movies reviews in HT forum and PSP.IGN? and I guess the PSN store weekly update in the IGN blog?

What does that have to do with anything?

Why yes, that would indeed be me. :D

Oddly enough, I got all my UMDs from everyone but Sony. And now they're the only ones left making them, aside from Fox (who also didn't give out UMD screeners). Huh.

Not to raise an old argument but it’s interesting that the major directors, producers and industry leaders all view Blu-ray as the format that is superior. Maybe it has something to do with the fundamentals of an optical format i.e. storage and bandwidth?

Personally I have felt that the HD-DVD sides success in minimising these talking points is their biggest so far.

Michael Bay joins Steven Spielberg, Jerry Bruckheimer and Francis Ford Coppola.

They feel their creations would be best catered for by Blu-ray. That sort of PR is very hard to brush-off. Bay’s comments are pretty amazing considering Transformers is the only thing preventing HD-DVD being totally embarrassed this holiday.

Any directors expressed their preference for HD-DVD?

Even those of us with HD DVD players (and I've got the A2) have to concede there's practically no way HD DVD can win this thing. The numbers are staggering. I mean truly, truly staggering.

I got one because it was $100, and at that price it was worth it to have HD now rather than later. If it wins (somehow) I'm good to go. If it dies, I still have a library that I can expand on the cheap when nobody wants those discs anymore. The war (be it the standalone war or the game console war) will have pushed down PS3 prices by then, and I'll be golden.

If most of my movies were going to be released on Blu-Ray I'd be pounding that drum pretty hard too.

Spielberg's films are tied up with Universal and DreamWorks and he's making sure they aren't released on HD-DVD.

Michael Bay's films are

Sony - Bad Boys I & II
Disney – The Rock, Armageddon & Pearl Harbor
Universal – The Island
Paramount – Transformers

His upcoming 2009 releases are for Universal, Paramount and Warner.

As I said when the directors/producers say they prefer Blu-ray there is virtually no PR comeback. You could say they are misinformed but you'd be laughed at.

AKA its coming out on HDDVD but Marconelly couldnt just say that. He had to tell you why you shouldnt care about it.
I had abso-lutely no idea what format it was coming on. You really read too much into my comment which was nothing but a side-observation.

I guess you also conveniently ignored that I in the same breath maligned Cameron's Avatar which will likely be BD only if things with Fox stay the same by then, and will probably heavily rely on 3D projection to impress the audience.

I agree with you completely. People can go over old posts and see what I wrote if they want. I've always said that HDDVD winning Q4 is dependant on how well Toshiba sells the Standalones and how that translates into movie sales. I never expected $99 players. $199, I did and I honestly thought Blu-ray would be in bad shape if that ever happened.

Right now HD DVD is a disaster! It has virtually ZERO chance of winning this war unless Warner changes sides. They are getting their asses handed to them royally. And with the 1.1 Blu-ray players coming out, Blu-ray standalone sales will increase dramatically as many AV guys will switch from the PS3 to the new Panasonic, or whatever 1.1 player comes out.

OK WTF, I just got back from picking up Pirates 3 and Superbad (FS and BB didn't have Mr. & Mrs. Smith, asshats), and what do I see? Those shitty Warner / Fox cases.

I thought Sony and Disney could be counted on to always use the good "lock" cases. Looks like I'll be placing an order for extra cases sooner rather than later.

Sucks if true for all of 'em.

Yeah, Superbad has the Warner/Fox "cheap" cases. But while I was looking at the movies on the rack I noticed that there's two different versions of that case. There's the one we all know and love (hate) and there's this new one where the "b)" at the top is smaller and a bright silver as opposed to the white-ish one that they've been using. Can't remember what movie it was, though.

There a few variations of each case type but mainly.

1) The type with the embossed BD logo (also reflective) on top.
2) The type with the printed flat BD logo in silver.

I don't think it is...boxart doesn't seem to indicate it anyways.
Best to check the running time.

Kingdom of Heaven is the director's cut on BD but the boxart doesn't mention it anywhere.

Anyone already see Superbad on Bluray? Must buy for me, the funny part is that the bluray movies I actually own don't show off a damn thing cause they're all comedies :lol

I rent the action stuff.

Some time ago Toshiba financed a marketing campaign with a director and he made commercials promoting HDDVD. I forget who he was. I think he did a major TV series.

I like how Michael Bay doesn't know what's going on :lol

The guy only makes fucking movies and is intimately involved with the industry. Posters on Neogaf know better, though. They read the forums from work all day, Mr. Bay! They know!:lol

Does Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl still come as the miscropped version? I never picked up Pirates 1/2 since I was hoping for a box set of 1-3, but now that At World's End is out I'm willing to cave and buy them all individually if the first one is fixed.

Disney will be offering replacements soon and releasing fixed versions soon.

I got The Aviator, Dracula, and the new Full Metal Jacket today from people for the Jewish christmas and so the first thing I did was do a comparison between the old FMJ and the new one.

...WOW.

Outside of a few scenes, the new one looks clean and nice like a recent movie, whereas every scene in the old version was grainy as hell. Then the night scenes which were almost unwatchable in the old disc are now just grainy on the new one. Definitely a big improvement and worth re-buying for any big fan of the film.

Good to hear about Full Metal Jacket. It is one of my favorite movies, and I was excited to get it for free, until I heard how bad the transfer was. I'll pick up this new release instead.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pocketli/20071204/ttc-80-000-access-web-features-on-hd-dvd-57dbc65.html

HD DVD has announced that fans are "tapping into" the web-enabled communities offered by HD DVD.

"Transformers" from Paramount Home Entertainment and "Heroes: Season One" from Universal Home Entertainment are among the titles that saw significant online usage of the web-connected features in the States.

"Transformers" had more than 80,000 unique online users, with 31% returning to download additional content as it became available.

Universal's current web-enabled titles, which include

"Heroes: Season One", "Knocked Up", and "Evan Almighty", saw an average of 30% of HD DVD purchasers going online to download content and connect with other fans.

"We've only scratched the surface in offering web-connected experiences to fans of hit movies and TV shows, so it was great to see so many connecting online for these titles," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of HD strategic marketing for Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and co-president of the HD DVD Promotional Group.

"As more titles from the HD DVD studios include access to downloads, trailers and community pages, the owner of any HD DVD player can take advantage of these web-connected experiences."

Just downloaded the Transformers custom menu bars (Bumblebee, Megatron and Optimus Prime are the ones available). Not necessarily the most useful feature on a movie disc, but they're kinda neat, since they all look great.

I ordered Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Dog Day Afternoon on Amazon. I was going to get The Fountain instead of KKBB, but the reviews are so much better.

KKBB is so awesome. How awesome? Awesome possum.

Sweet, I love these BOGO deals, they make me feel more comfortable taking chances on movies I haven't seen.

Its a paradox: I don't want to pay $25+ on movies i've never seen. But once I see a movie, I don't want to pay $25+ to own it.

I was able to do a direct comparison for Waterworld (don't ask), using the Ps3 upscaling at 1080p and the HD DVD at 1080p. On some scenes, the jump was relatively mild, and in others it was a huge difference. For the most part, these studios are doing a great job porting over these films. HD is the real deal, that's for sure. The resolution jump makes every single scene a treat, which makes watching meandering movies like Waterworld a lot more bearable.

I totally forgot it was coming out today until I saw your post. I decided to rush out to Best Buy only to see it priced at $34.99. Typical Fox MSRP, I know, but fuck that. Seriously. And Amazon's not much better at $27.95. I am not paying these prices for movies. Fox needs another BOGOF deal if they want my money, or Fry's needs to mark that thing at $13.99 again.
