I don't know where to post this and whether this deserved it's own thread. But there's rumour that Apple's new Mac Pros expected at January's Macworld my introduce the option to include Blu-ray drives. Interesting...

Only problem with this rumor is that Macworld is a consumer-oriented show, thus a new MacPro really isn't likely to be announced there.

Well no, it's pretty much open to any lineup refreshes. I recall they updated the Powerbook line through Macworld San Fran. It's pretty much the premiere Apple convention next to WWDC.

:p I tried to buy PE at BestBuy, but They won't sell it to me. They have 6 copies in store but they were taking them off the shelves and told me they were holding them to sell Sunday morning. Good to know money isn't good enough to buy shit you want. Anyway, I'll just point out I was stunned by how picked over the Blu-ray shelves were, they were out of tons of titles.

Granted there are exceptions, but the typical rule seems to be that Apple doesn't usually do "pro" updates at Macworld. If they happen around that time, they seem to happen separate of the show.

If you look at the MacPro line, there hasn't been a Macworld update for the line at any point in the last five years (which is the farthest back the timeline I'm looking at goes). The pro laptops just like to try to prove me wrong, it seems.

I've been trying and trying to figure out what PE is but I can't. I'm looking at release lists for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray but I see nothing. help?

Planet Earth pretty much is a must own for any hi-def fan. It's just so jaw-dropping and a perfect way to get sucked into the hi-def arena.

I wonder what total numbers are on PE for both BD and HD-DVD...anybody have those?

No, but interestingly enough, PE HD-DVD was nearly the number one title for the week, according to my AVS jaunt yesterday.

That place *is* a lot more pleasant than it used to be.

I don't have the numbers but the ratio between sales for BD & HD DVD with Planet Earth is pretty much 50%-50%

That is because they have been spot banning anyone with an opinion that they do not like.

Good for them. Did you get banned? :)
Me? Nah I don't pay much attention over there.
I know that a ton of people got banned for posting the Michael Bay thing though, and most likely a ton more will get banned for posting the Lionsgate rumor.

What Lionsgate rumor?

"The rumor is that Warner is coming aboard soon," says Michael Burns, vice-chairman of studio Lionsgate (LGF), which makes its movies available on the Sony-backed format. "That will make it awfully tough for HD DVD to stay in this game." (Sony declined to comment, and Toshiba only would say it is "in regular contact with the studios.")

Thanks both of you.

I don't know how much weight I'd give that. Still I find it amusing that the press always seems to try and convey that HD-DVD has the same level of industry support as Blu-ray Just looking at that chart shows you 5 hardware players for both sides. Maybe it's unintentional but omitting Sharp, Hitachi and Apple is strange.

Interesting overview-- and there's just about the same amount of scuttlebutt suggesting WB could go HD-DVD.

Except that died down about a month ago.

Just looked at the Amazon.com BoGo deal. Picked up 300 and Unforgiven for 20 bucks shipped, not bad at all.

Picked up Unforgiven, The Wild Bunch, The Road Warrior, and Goodfellas for $39.90 shipped. Not too bad at all. Wanted to get The Departed and Deliverance, but the box art on Deliverance really bothers me.

Anyone here have The Searchers on high-def? If so, how is it?

Yeah, nearly all the HD DVD fanboys on my ignore list ended up getting banned :)

I had to stop reading that forum for a while, even with the ignore list...it was getting to be too much.

I was glad to see that one of the guys on my ignore list cleaned up the flamebait comments in his sig and actually was posting to help people get the most out of their HD DVD players...

I meant in that actual article. Using it to say that WB is swinging Blu-ray based on that comment ignores later parts where an insider says that WB is interested in seeing who gets the most players out there. It's selective reading to make it out as pro-Blu.

Of course, that other condition depends on how and if WB counts PS3s. I know some people would like to say they'll ignore them completely, but considering they've long been the best value Blu-ray players, that wouldn't make good sense.

Yeah, I seriously doubt that Warners will ignore the PS3. It hardly even resembles a game machine, and most home theater sites (and magazines) have praised it as being the best Blu-ray player out there.

To ignore that, would be ignoring Blu-ray's superior software sales, which would be baffling.

In that case, I think we know that the Warner Bogo is being subsidized by the BDA group.

I hope Warner chooses a side. I think whoever they choose will end up as the sole format.

Also, in case it wasn't mentioned. Transformers (2007) is coming to Blu-ray in Korea. Korea is region A, same as the Americas.

Well, my DG510 cheapie black friday deal from Best Buy was backordered to hell, so I gave in to my itch and upgraded to the DG910 (great deals right now from Amazon [$356] and JR.com [$349.99]). Arrived yesterday from JR (can't beat overnight for free), and holy hell it's awesome. I preferred it to the Onkyo 605 due to the greater number of HDMI and optical inputs, as well as the lack of reported HDMI handshaking issues or conversion wonkiness. It beautifully converts all my inputs to a single HDMI output - nice and clean. Cool touches like custom input labeling for the receiver display (i.e. my devices read "xbox 360", "wii", and "HD DVD").

TrueHD via my HD-A3 is astonishing, even on my frankenstein speaker medley.

For anyone interested in the JR deal, here you go: http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.pro...STRDG910&JRSource=zdnet.datafeed.SON+STRDG910

I agree, but if for some reason they go HD-DVD, that is the only justification I could think was behind it. And te HD-DVD fans like to say that studios are looking to standalone players.

I personally thik WB si going to pick Blu-ray, but who knows for sure.

Is there a good site for importing Korean Blu-ray discs? Did a Korean version of Children of Men ever come out?

Well, each camp likes to say a variety of different things.

I'll put it to you this way, if Stringer and crew somehow let WB go HD-DVD exclusive, it will be one of the biggest disasters in Sony's history...possibly the biggest. Which is why I cannot for the life of me believe it will happen. They surely know the stakes, just look at those Thanksgiving ads they put out.

You keep saying we'll know in about 6 weeks time, and I suspect you're right. Some interesting times are ahead.

Yes it came out. Supposedly, it looks good. I have no idea where to get it. I don't import movies. To me, they don't exist unless I can find them in store.

Actually that was a quote from a WB exec, to be specific. I linked it the last time for you, but I hope you just google it yourself now.

This was very amusing to me:

The battle has heated up since HD DVD got Paramount and DreamWorks Animation. Both sides have been beating a path to Warner's Burbank (Calif.) doorstep. Yoshihide Fujii, the head of Toshiba's HD DVD business in Japan, has made three trips to the U.S. since the summer, say those with knowledge of the situation. And while Andrew House, Sony's chief marketing officer, has been pressing the Blu-ray case, the stakes are sufficiently high that Sony CEO Howard Stringer has been making personal appeals to Richard Parsons and Jeffrey Bewkes, the two top executives at Warner parent Time Warner (TWX).

Warner must feel like the only hot chick at the prom with all the attention they're getting. :lol

There's a juicy rumor. And it parallels the one about Weinstein receiving word that WB was going HD DVD exclusive.

Except this rumor is from a head of a studio, and the other was from some high school asshat with a blog...
Other than that exactly the same

You can be such a dick sometimes. Any phrase that starts with "the rumor is," is highly dubious. Who the hell knows where he heard this rumor? Obviously nothing is a done deal on either side, so for there to be a rumor that Warner had already decided, either way, is kinda silly. Given his stake in the "fight," I view that as nothing more than executive level FUD.

Personally, I think Warner will end up milking both sides awhile longer.

Then you're really missing out. I live in the UK and at least half of my films are imports...I just counted and 8 of them aren't available on any format in this country! Three more of my imports took over 4 months to arrive in this country. So I imported them and it would have been crazy to ignore them just because they're imports

How am I a dick ( in this case )?
The Weinstein rumor WAS from a high schooler's blog with no support at all.
(A high schooler from highdefdigest forums)
This at least is a higher up in a company in a national story.
Whether there is weight to it or not, comparing them is asinine at best.

Ookie has a point.

One rumour is from a Vice President of a major Hollywood studio. The other is from "Spartan Johnson". They are not the same in terms of credibility.

Still I give neither much credence.
