Hi-Def Media Lovefest: The war is over and we can all go home.

avaya pretty much sums it up.

Look, I'm pro-Blu as I want one winner and it's leading by a lot... but we couold let this ride out for a while and I don't think anything will change. I'd love WB to announce today, tomorrow, whenever, but in reality, they'll probably wait until January. Even then, who knows what Toshiba has left to bargain with? It's not sales (except through disingenous counting) and price is becoming less of a factor all the time. Realistically, it's down to a big ol' moneyhat, WB deciding to ignore PS3 players *and* software sales, or something we haven't thought of. Doesn't look good for HD-DVD.

80K vs how many new Blu-ray player owners? How many new PS3 owners?

It's not like the other side is standing still, y'know.

thats my point man. you claim the 99 dollar players dont help when there were only 80k of them sold in one territory. meaning 80k in supply isnt enough to increase hd dvd support.

also, where do you get your ratio for europe?

But Max, if there were only 80K (or however many) of them, and that's not enough to affect the market, what difference does it make? It's not like there are 1M $99 players that are going on sale this weekend. So far, none of the price cutting has managed to erode Blu-ray's lead, built on studio support + the PS3-- two factors that aren't going to be changing.

In fact, as HD media awareness increases, the number of PS3 owners actively buying discs is only likely to increase.

Kinda OT, but I decided to try HD movies "OnDemand" for the first time last night. We've had the service for awhile but with BR I hadn't really thought to bother with it. But curiosity got the best of me and I ordered Transformers. Holy macro blocking Batman! Literally every fast moving frame was a distorted mess. Seemed worse than even your average HDnet or HBOHD broadcast. This stuff is definitely not ready for prime time, at least on Time Warners end. And if this is our HD future I definitely do not want.

Either way, from a forum reading entertainment, I win :lol

If Warner goes Blu then it's over. I'd rather see them go red just for the epic meltdowns. Things point to Blu though. Either way HD DVD has been worth it for me. *hugs Heroes HD* :D

People who say shit like that should be banned on the spot on both sides of this forum.

Sorry man, I just hate people who only want to see shit stirred up.
There are plenty of boards that get off on drama, the nice thing about this one is the lack of it. ( for the most part )

Whatever, you're the biggest drama queen in this thread. And nice to see HD DVD fight back, it had, what, 4 straight weeks of drubbing? Give the pac man some lockjaw before Blu goes back on the offensive next week. And I'm shocked that PE was neck and neck with Die Hard. The SI numbers didn't change, though I doubt blu will get to 65/35 by year's end.

These "soilders" in the "war" remind me of those two Lord Of The Ring nerds in Clerks 2.

Finally managed to grab a copy of Planet Earth today. I had yet to see any of the series, and I'm already blown away from just the first episode. The documentary itself is just outstanding andthe High Def is unbelievable. Picked up a copy of The Replacement Killers just for the hell of it. Still suprising to see so many titles completly sold out, I really didn't think this many people were buying Blu-rays.

One would think Warner going Blu-ray would result in a bigger meltdown than Warner going HD DVD.

Blu-ray would be pretty viable even without Warner. HD DVD would not.

If Warner went red, it would mean dual format is never going away so get used to it and do what you have to do.

If Warner goes blu it means that Toshiba will be releasing its first blu ray player by Christmas '08.

HD-A3 /w 12 free movies is $200 on Amazon. The five free movies you get to pick from Amazon are pretty good too. Batman Begins, Hot Fuzz, Knocked Up, Bourne Supremacy,Shaun of the Dead, Children of Men, The Big Lebowski, and Pride & Prejudice.

NO REFERRAL LINKS - bishoptl

Amazon doesn't charge tax, right? This is quite a deal.

Black Friday Hi-Def sales:
http://www.videobusiness.com/index.asp?layout=article&articleid=CA6510883

High-def player sales still just 10% of standard DVD
DisplaySearch: Discounting gave HD DVD two-thirds of next-gen holiday sales

By Susanne Ault -- Video Business, 12/7/2007

DEC. 7 | High-def hardware achieved huge Black Friday gains, but still lags behind the sales pace of standard-definition DVD players.

HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc stand-alone players sold 57,000 units during the week ended Nov. 24, the day marking the official kick-off to the holiday season. That contrasts to the 600,000 units sold of standard-def DVD players, according to market analyst DisplaySearch.

DisplaySearch released these figures during a Black Friday Webinar on Friday.

HD DVD commanded the lion’s share of unit sales for stand-alone high-def disc players, scoring a 62% unit share; Blu-ray held 37%. Due to higher price points, Blu-ray hardware cornered 52% of the revenue; HD DVD, 47%.

Paul Erickson, director of DVD and HD DVD market research at DisplaySearch, said that HD DVD’s retail pricing, which on average was 50% cheaper than Blu-ray stand-alones, spurred its Black Friday sales for the format. The most popular high-def models were Toshiba’s HD-A3, which many retailers sold for $199, and the Sony and Samsung Blu-ray players and PS3 model that sold for $399.

Each format significantly hiked its sales from week directly preceding the Black Friday frame. HD DVD unit sales jumped 454%; Blu-ray, up 189%. In revenue, HD DVD was up 272%; Blu-ray, up 176%.

Due to strong promotion around its new $399 40GB model, PlayStation 3 sold between 160,000 and 170,000 units, DisplaySearch estimates.

HD DVD might have sold more units during the Black Friday period, but the Blu-ray Disc Assn. nevertheless said it hit a new milestone—2.7 million players sold since launch—over the period. The figure encompasses both Blu-ray-capable gaming devices and Blu-ray set-top players, but the Blu-rayA declined to break down sales.

The HD DVD camp earlier said its total sales of set-top players and gaming devices reached 750,000 units following widespread holiday retail sales, notably including $99-priced players at Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

The BDA last week also trumpeted its continuing lead in Blu-ray software sales, which in the weeks leading up to Black Friday had been outpacing HD DVD titles by a two-to-one ratio. During the Black Friday period, Blu-ray titles made up 72.6% of all high-def purchases, with HD DVD totaling 27.4%, according to Nielsen/VideoScan figures cited by BDA.

According to the Blu-ray camp, total Blu-ray disc sales in the U.S. since launch topped 4 million units in November, about the same time HD DVD software sales passed just 2.5 million units.

DisplaySearch predicts Black Friday trends will continue through the rest of the year. By the end of 2007, 678,000 HD DVD stand-alones will have shipped into retail since launch, it said. Blu-ray players will have shipped 461,000 units. PS3s will stand at 2.5 million units, and Xbox 360 HD DVD drive at 270,000 units.

Keeping with previous predictions, DisplaySearch estimates that 4.76 million high-def stand-alones will have shipped to retail by year-end 2008.

That pretty much sums up how I feel about this old rumor. I have the funny feeling though that Warner will go red, perhaps for a better deal than Paramount/Dreamworks. I personally would love them to go blu, since it would shorten the format war.

99 dollar HD DVD players are not turning the tide. It is time to end this format war.

Your right.

We don't care about a 99$ HD player. We all stricly need a 400$ HD player, because we all are full of cash. :lol

Yeah, really, I'd much rather have to buy two players or an expensive dual-format player than one $400 player.

From a personal standpoint I prefer blu-rays method of discounting movies vs. Toshiba's practice of discounting players.

To be fair, they aren't really comparable. Both promotions have different goals:

HD-DVD: Establish a larger userbase

Blu-Ray: Spoil HD-DVD sales in a big release week. Get more PS3 owners hooked on the format.

The latter is notable. With PS3 owners, the job is already half done. Any work Sony/BDA does to get more PS3 owners buying movies is going to pay dividends.

I'd much rather just buy the cheap player and stick two fingers up at Blu, but that's me. ;)

You're an admitted Sony hater, I just want movies.

FWIW, I'd rather the cheaper player's format won too, but that's not happening.
