Apparently, Penton-Man has a history of reliable information. I don't post there, so take it with a grain of sale.

Not only is he suggesting that the Warner rumor is true, he's hinting that the decision is putting a serious squeeze on Universal.

So a rumor that's old and mostly baseless is putting a squeeze on Universal? Whatever.

Let's just wait this out and stop with the FUD.

Please tell me how you know what rumor or what information that the guy from Lionsgate is going on?
Seriously I would love to know how you have access to the same information that he does or have any idea what he is basing his comments off of.
Do you honestly believe that he would go on public record speaking on a "rumor" based on random interweb forum speculation?

I am not saying to believe it, but be realistic.

Wal-Mart HD-DVD Player Secret Sale:

Wal-Mart is selling two of it's HD-DVD Player models for $200 and $300 each. When you buy either, you get 5 free HD-DVDs on the spot. If you get the $300 model, you also get 300 and Bourne Identity. You also can pick up a Toshiba rebate coupon that allows you to get 5 MORE free HD-DVDs.

So, you can get a $200 HD-DVD player with 10 free HD-DVDs or you can get a $300 HD-DVD player with 12 free HD-DVDs.

hey, its all fun. Pretty much all we have is this daytime soap opera to play with :)

Universal would be interesting. I assume that any deal that may have held them to HDDVD would be over pretty soon or even already.

And if they went, I'm sure Paramount are smart enough to have some wriggly get out clauses.

Lets see a house of cards fall down at CES.

fuck it, even if its a bluray house of cards and it all goes the other way.

Again, who knows? But he has everything to gain and nothing to lose, even if this were completely made up. It's a rumor, so if it doesn't pan out, no loss for him. On the other hand, getting it in a significant publication like BusinessWeek is rather beneficial from a PR standpoint.

And doing some digging, Penton-Man (also posts at AVS apparently) was well aware of the Paramount deal before the press release came out:

Good find!

Lets not forget the Playstation 3 40 gb system with Spiderman 3 on blu ray, +5 free movies by mail and an instant $50 gift card that is also part of the secret sale.

The vice chairman of Lionsgate has nothing to lose by spouting off a completely baseless rumor about a competitor?

How about his credibility, for one?

Who would remember in 6 months except forum nerds?

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
This rumor stuff is fun. What's also fun is how each side's fanbase switches roles depending on whether the current WB tide is for or against them. Not everyone, of course. The only way this affects me is that I won't have a choice when deciding on Warner titles, either way. CES is still too far away to get really excited, though, unless some more executives comment.

You haven't been paying attention to the way top execs on both sides have been behaving, have you? Childish and fanboyish, and rivaling even this thread in those regards.

FUD aside, IF this happens, does that mean I could get Batman Begins on BR?

If Warner does go Blu-ray exclusive, I still don't expect Batman Begins until Dark Knight hits theaters. Maybe a newly cut version of Begins. Might be worth the wait in such a case. We'll see at CES.

Penton-Man is a true insider like paidgeek is. Unless he says anything is concrete it's not confirmed. Certainly his hinting does give this rumour more status than the run of the mill shit we've been getting for months.

For the record Penton was the one who leaked the Paramount thing on another site.

That's lousy for BD.

Yes, considering that they had nothing released worth a damn and hd has two day and date releases ( as shitty as they were ) and two known comedies ( Anchorman and Old School ) you are quite right how horrible for blu...

(blu had :
* I Know Who Killed Me (Sony)
* Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade (Bandai Visual) ( did not hit retailers )
* The Omega Man (Warner)
* Paprika (Sony)
Hd had :
* Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (DreamWorks)
* Hot Rod (Paramount)
* Mr. Bean's Holiday (Universal)
* Old School (Paramount)
* The Omega Man (Warner)

I expect nothing short of dominance.

Vaughn has been correct the last three weeks, so there is no reason to believe that he is wrong this time.
I figured everyone knew that and he was just wondering if the Nielson numbers were up, as well as the top ten for both included.

Would anyone be interested in an unopened Transformer's 2-disc HD-DVD and some paypal for Planet Earth HD-DVD? I have references on heatware and ebay. I would also sell it(I have two copies) for 23 shipped.

Warning for anyone who is thinking of getting the Battlestar Galactica HD DVD box set. Because of the packaging, 3 of my disc are deeply scratched (out of 6).

I was thinking of replacing it for another one, but it looks like pretty much everyone are in the same situation, some guy at AVS even has all of them scratched. Just tried them out and they seem to play fine, so I'll probably just keep it instead of risking of having another one that could be even worse.

Slow news day... rumors come up as a detail in a discussion *about another forum* and before long we're embroiled in trying to shave points off the odds of rumors being true.

Rumors are rumors, we'll see soon enough. I sure hope it's true, though.

I thought both formats had a coating to help protect from scratches? I seem to remember something about steel wool.

As far as I know, that coating is only on Blu-Ray. BD had to use it because the reflective layer is much closer to the surface than on DVD. My understanding was the HD-DVD was similar to DVD in this regard, and the coating was not deemed necessary.

Hopefully the Warner rumor becomes true.

99 dollar HD DVD players are not turning the tide. It is time to end this format war.

Durabis is the name of the famed steel-wool, screwdriver attack resistant coating. TDK are the people behind it. It is offered for any optical disc format. No one uses Durabis AFAIK. Blu-ray uses a hard coat which is not as effective as Durabis but renders it more resistant to scratches than DVD and HD-DVD which have no coating. The coating is one of the reasons why Blu-ray costs a smidgen more to manufacture since a coating is mandated.

was there a sale on of some sort? A lot of movies jumped back up there on the charts.

I believe at least Best Buy was having a pretty decent sale on Planet Earth, which may explain why it jumped back up so high. That, or it might be because the series has been running recently on Discovery, and people then wanted to own a copy.

all 80 thousand of them that sold out?

That's great.

2-1 NA, >3-1 in EU, virtually 100% of Japan. This is what counts.

One side has reached it's pricing floor. The other side has not even begun to get that desperate and are still comfortably winning. Which format do you think is more likely to establish itself as the viable sustainable platform? Which side has universal industry support from content creation to the end-user delivery system?

What do you think the logical conclusion for someone looking at that would be?
