damn we need some good sales I'm almost done watching through all my backlog now I only have Castaway and Robocop to go through out of all the movies I had.

Spiderman 3 was fucking fantastic looking - too bad I enjoyed the movie more then I should have, but after watching the whole trilogy it's easily the weakest...and it's a shame that they treid to stick so much in there. I never really liked 2 until I watched it again on Blu Ray, and I truly do appreciate the character development more. Stupid Venom fucking my movie up.

Anyway don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind paying full price for new releases, but I want the catalog titles to flow out on BOGOs.

Damn March looks like a pretty good month too, a lot of high profile releases.

Oh shit, is it true?!

Washington Post picked up on this story too. By tomorrow it will have reached every media outlet...Probably will be reported on CNN too...

This is seriously great news. I feel bad for the hd-dvd adopters, but FINALLY this war can be over with. Now some true market penetration can commence here. This war was only a waiting game.

Not on HD DVD that's for sure.. I stopped buying HD DVDs the day WB went Blu.

Toshiba had better make a good combo player though, I'll buy that shit day 1. Samsung and LG's combo players are pieces of SHIT.

Blame Broadcom.

As to Toshiba making a good combo player, unless its a high-end ... I would expect it to be a piece of shit considering their Gen3 HD DVD units.

Yeah I'm hoping for something along the lines of the XA-2, but it plays BDs too.

The bad thing for Toshiba is that even if this isn't true, it will have already been reported everywhere and the general public will have been made aware...We will see what Toshiba has to say in the morning. Expect a press release around 8-10am pacific, unless Toshiba Japan wants to respond...

Exactly. The damage is pretty much already done, especially when we see it on the news tomorrow, that'll be devastating, but we all know it'll be there. The thing is this war was already pretty much over with these 80/20 numbers, however with all this (possible)FUD going around, the format is far past dead. Let's hear that announcement Toshiba. Hey when they do officially announce it can we have one last thread title change? When do we expect the announcement?

I really can't see them denying it at this point. With the collapse of European studio, distribution, and retail support over the last 2 weeks ... its all but dead there. It was effectively still-born in Japan. Basically, the US is it, and its getting crushed here too.

Crap, they paid all that cash for Paramount, who's effectively a US-only company for a majority of their releases. Most of their titles have foreign distribution ownership by BD companies. HD DVD basically put all their eggs in the US basket, and that shit just got run over.

Even if the article is true, if the announcement is weeks away, as The Hollywood Reporter claims, expect Toshiba to make some kind of denial this morning, with typical PR speak qualifiers like "at this time."

"We have made no such announcements , toshiba and it's partners are reviewing options and continue to believe that hd-dvd is the best product"

or "we have no current plans to drop hd dvd" etc.

And then the reds will be all like "Toshiba DENIED IT and of course this means you Blu Boys were full of shit! Hollywood Reporter and Reuters am Blu-ray fanboys lol"

And THEN a while later Toshi will really drop HD DVD and the reds will be all like "OH SHI-"

Something I thought was interesting....

I went into bestbuy today to pick up an internet order. The customer service area had a pile of about 6 HD-DVD players that were recently returned.

I said to the cashier "wow a lot of those players are coming back aren't they?" he said yeah people don't want them anymore since blu-ray is the hidef player of choice now.

Paramount exec: "So you're saying we get to keep the $500m Toshiba gave us, and we can go back to releasing movies on bluray? Fucking hell, give the guy who did that deal a raise"

$500M, is that accurate? That's a ton of money for one studio.
No it's not accurate, $500m is the figure tinfoil hat-wearing red fanboys said Sony paid WB to go Blu.

The New York Times and Wall Street Journal OTOH reported that Par was paid $150 million to go red.

Anyone see Gone Baby Gone? I just watched it and it's fucking awesome, very intense story and amazing characters and character development imo. I'm thinking about picking this up on Blu.

This wuld be awesome because it would mean I can enjoy NCFOM on BD this year. :D

Paramount should also announce an Indy Quadrilogy. I want all my Indiana Jones movies in HD after I saw some scenes from the old ones in the new trailer.

@YYZ: Yes I loved the movie, totally underrated should be nominated for an Oscar instead of Michael Clayton. I am still waiting for the region code information on the US release.

Edit: Just found out it's region locked. Oh well 2 more months of wating then.

I had higher hopes since I saw that it was written by the same person who wrote Mystic River, but that of course was directed by the awesome Clint Eastwood, which could explain things.

Solid performance by Affleck and nice work by Affleck as director, was his first one, wasn't it?

I think Ben Affleck did almost everything right in the movie. The mood and atmosphere were spot on and the scenes were shot perfectly for the type of movie it is.

Maybe I should get it and give it another chance.

Nah, it was a complete mess, one of the worst movies I've seen in theaters for ages and made me so sick of Casey Affleck I've avoided Jesse James since even though I previously looked very much forward to it. The last part is bullshit on my part, of course, but Casey's character in Gone.. was one of the least believable, most idiotic mix of cliches seen on screen.

Buried in the Reuters article, the numbers are in for last week -- 81:19.

http://ca.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idCAN1451010520080215

Software sales have declined as well. The latest Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales data show the top-selling Blu-ray Disc title for the week, Sony's "Across the Universe," sold more than three times as many copies the week ending February 10 as the top HD DVD seller, Universal's "Elizabeth: The Golden Age." Blu-ray Disc titles also accounted for 81% of all high-def disc sales for the week, with HD DVD at just 19%.

See, this is what always kind of annoyed me about the blu-camp (been combo since I joined). Why would you feel bad for HD-DVD adopters? Did there players all up and stop working? Did their movies all up and stop playing? Did all those months (years) of enjoying HD movies on HD-DVD all the sudden become worthless?

It's once thing if we're talking about a service that all the sudden got shut down and can no longer be accessed. But we're talking about an owned physical format. The investment doesn't change and considering most HD-DVD owners seem to be either 360 owners or combo owners anyway... it sure doesn't seem like much will change in terms of how they can watch their HD-DVDs.

Ugh, what I feared.

I better still get my five free hd-dvds Toshiba! (been waiting since Nov)
ok, now THIS would be something to feel bad about. Thankfully I already got my free movies late January. Good luck.

I'm personally not invested, but I would guess it changes the value of some people's players. They bought the players with the promise of being able to watch movie releases in hidef, but now they have to switch to blu ray in order to watch future releases.
Sure, it's current value doesn't change. But it's potential value has been slashed.

HAY GUYS WHAT'S GOING ON????? :lol

Can't believe I missed it last night. My phone line is down at home, so no interwebs for me. I've yet to even check out the NPDs on the gaming side yet but I knew something big was up when I saw the thread title change. Even as the top poster in this epic, epic thread, I can't wait for it to die so we can just talk about movies and equipment and such. Warner was truly the kingmaker.

Shortly after buying my Ps3, I had buyer's remorse. Now I know it was a good choice. Not only do my dvd's look fantastic, but the future of high def disc media is available to me. Even if I don't ever buy a single game for that console (which I haven't yet), it will be well worth it as my disc media device.

And I'm still shocked at how quickly this all unraveled for Toshiba. This just emphasizes that Blu Ray simply was the industry's choice, with superior support in every critical area. From CE manufacturers, to distributors, to the infrastructure in general, Blu Ray had its act together. Even if Fox and Warner had gone red, Blu Ray would definitely not have collapsed this quickly.

Just checked the NPD thread:

Was last night the single greatest night for Playstation 3 since it launched over a year ago? You have published reports of Toshiba quitting and then NPD reports that Ps3 outsold 360 for the first time ever.

StoOgE

First tragedy, then farce.
I still dont have my free discs. I was told they would ship in late January, still dont have them. I have a feeling I'm never going to get them. Complete BS Toshiba.

Does anyone have that number you call to check on them?

I too felt a little dodgy about buying a PS3 last February, but I didn't want to miss any high-def content and it looks like the system is starting to come together as a game machine, too. Plus I got a 60GB with hardware BC to PS2 and I couldn't be much happier.

That said, I'm not surprised at how fast things are coming apart for Toshiba. They were always fighting from the weaker position, and while they fought hard, it wasn't enough to overcome the PS3 Effect and Blu-ray's always-superior studio and retailer support.

I think Toshiba hung in there valiantly and if rumors are true, they almost pulled off a behind-closed-doors coup that would have swung things the other way. But once Warner announced its was going Blu-ray exclusive, that was IT.

After that, all that was left was for retailers and renters and studios and consumers to fall in line. And eventually, Toshiba itself.

It looks like we've nearly reached the final chapter of this story.

edit: I'm really not awake yet. ;) But I wanted to somewhat disagree with what you said about "Blu-ray had its act together." The format owes its victory to PS3, plain and simple. Without PS3, I think the format would have been eliminated quickly. But the system brought Blu-ray to millions of tech-hungry early adopters who wanted their high-def toys. And that's something Toshiba simply could not match, aggressive pricing be damned.

A side effect of the rush to market (since HD DVD had already been there for several months) was that the Blu-ray spec was not and still is not complete. So now we have several hundred thousand players out there that won't be 100% compatible with features in upcoming movies. But it's not like Sony or the BDA had any choice. They either had to get to market and build some numbers or die; they certainly couldn't wait for Profile 1.1 or 2.0 to arrive.

It's been a messy game, and neither side's been perfect, but one played a stronger hand than the other, and played it better, and now we can all move forward and enjoy HD movies without worrying about the format we buy them on.
