Joe Six-Pack: posting for the common man

Several people have their Blood Diamond copy in hand already and think that the PQ is nowhere as bad as mentioned in those reviews. Some find the transfer to be great actually.

Sure it might not be perfect, but if the transfer is consistent 90% of the time it's still a must buy if you're fan of the movie.
Well I'll tell em to give it a rent then, i havnt seen it. My mom only saw it in the theater.

Lucky parents. :)

I've placed Flags of Our Fathers and Letters on my zip list here. I'm awaiting those to be dispatched. :( I'm only now getting Deja Vu on BD.
yea but im only buying the PS3 and the movies, they are paying for the actual home theater, im just putting it together for them. :lol

Onix said:
Actually they don't look exactly the same. For Flags, take note of the suit-coat fabric.

The AVC version does appear to resolve a bit more detail (most likely due to the higher bitrate).

For the Prestige, the VC-1 version looks a bit more detailed. The color is just slightly different ... so that could also play a factor.
Well thats why i said they look the same to me. I only looked a few of the comparisons, but the ones i looked it i just sat here flicking through both looking at different objects for some sort of change, then again im on a 15" laptop screen running at 1280x800 so i couldnt even get the full picture on my screen.

Regardless, picking a single frame from a movie probably isn't the best way to compare codecs :p
I agree with that sentiment.

The Sony BDP-S300 went on sale today. At $499 is it now the cheapest *NEW* Blu-ray player. It's basically the Movie playing equivalent of the PS3, with True HD, DD+, etc...

they look exactly the same to me. Who ****ing cares if one is higher bitrate i mean seriously? Does it ****ing matter, does the disk some how cost you more because the bitrate is higher? No, ok then stfu.

I do see some differences in those shots, altho to be sure those differences where there and not just my eyes playing tricks on me I had to zoom in... but there's some differences in both.

I'm surprised this hasn't been done yet.

HDDDVD gained some ground this week. But the top 3, from last week, are still king!

From the AVS Nielsen Thread:

Week: 61:39
Year: 67:33
SI: 59:41

1. Pirates: DMC (BD) 100.00
2. Pirates: CBP (BD) 84.63
3. Apocolypto (BD) 82.92
4. Planet Earth (HD) 41.26
5. Letters from Iwo Jima (BD) 33.23
6. Ultimate Matrix (HD) 30.19
7. Planet Earth (BD) 28.97
8. Complete Matrix (HD) 28.21
9. Letters from Iwo Jima (HD) 27.48
10. Casino Royale (BD) 24.30

BD:
1. Pirates DMC 100.00
2. Pirates CBP 84.63
3. Apocolypto 82.92
4. Letters from Iwo Jima 27.48
5. Planet Earth 28.97

HD:
1. Planet Earth 100.00
2. Ultimate Matrix 73.17
3. Complete Matrix 68.37
4. Letters from Iwo Jima 66.59
5. Flags of our Fathers 42.41

I went looking for those this morning but they hadn't shown up yet.

I guess with the mediocre releases this week (IMHO), there are two effects

1) Same top sellers from last week
2) Bored owners blabbingon GAF about abstrations rather than real numbers (or going to watch movies)

Still think it is strange that Planet Earth is the only HD release to consistantly outsell the BD version and that it is selling better than the Matrix collections.

It is a great set though and deserves all the sales it gets.

First tragedy, then farce.
Weinstein company just announced the standard DVD of the Final Kill Bill cut (the combined films)..

even though Disney owns Kill Bill volume 1 & 2, Weinstein retained rights to the original cut of the movie... hopefully an HDDVD release is on the way as well (to coincide with Grindhouse?)

jjasper said:
So Blu Ray will get Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2 and HD DVD will get The Whole Bloody Affair?

yupp.. makes perfect sense no? :lol

When the Weinsteins left they cut up rights to alot of stuff, which is why some HDDVD Weinstein movies have the Miramax logo as well. This is also why Sin City will come out in HDDVD in Europe, but be a BRD movie in the U.S.

I think it was a very messy situation where Disney could have prevented the Weinsteins from releasing some stuff and visa versa, so they came to an agreement about who could release what so that a stalemate could be avoided.

It was 69/31 last week, so no ground gained. Unless you mean the titles on the software chart.

60/40 verus 70/30 is much better for HDDVD.. I think he was talking week over week, not that HDDVD is actually catching BRD..

Yah, that's what I meant.

Plus, most of HDDVDs numbers are from Box sets! So revenues should be on par. Which is what the studios are looking for. Money that is.

I still don't get it. Wasn't last week's ratio also 69/31?

jjasper said:
:lol Just think of it as though Blu Rays sold the same number of disks this week, then HD DVD sold around 10% more than it did last week

why, wouldn't that change the ratio (69/31)?

There's something really simple here that I'm missing. :(

VanMardigan

I'm such an idiot. For some reason, I kept reading both weeks as the same (69/31). That's why I was confused about the "gaining ground" comment. :lol

Thanks for being patient with me, guys. Boy do I feel like a moron. :(

see kids, this is what happens to your life if you support BluRay.

HDDVD makes you a winner, even if its not.

Last week, 70% of High Def sales were BRD. This week, only 60% were.

Last week 30% of High Def sales were HDDVD.. This week 40% were.

Hmm, numbers from May 29 release.

May 29, 2007
Dragonheart (Universal)
The Frighteners (Universal)
Lost in Translation (Universal)
Midnight Run (Universal)
The River (Universal)

VS

Basic Instinct (Lionsgate)
Chris Botti Live with Orchestra and Special Guests (Sony BMG)
Curse of the Golden Flower (Sony)
Weeds: Season One (Lionsgate)

And people are SHOCKED that it's 60:40 for Blu-ray? HD DVD had a much better movie selection. It will get creamed next week though.

Hellboy is the only really good exclusive on there, but yeah it should be an easy win for BR without HD-DVD having a single exclusive. Blood Diamond was the most disappointing movie I saw last year.

I told my girlfriend to surprise me with a Blu Ray movie while she was out tonight. She ended up getting me a copy of Eragon. I'll probably watch it sometime this weekend.

Well I'm started reading the book, but got overloaded with work. I can knock out the movie in two hours while the book would take too long. I need to get ready to leave for work here shortly. I'm glad I got it as it adds another movie to my collection. The High-Def Digest review says for fans only..so I can imagine I'll at least enjoy it some what.

Finally got a chance to watch Curse of the Black Pearl.

Impressions:

1) Video - Holy shit. I found one single scene (dark) that appeared a bit grainy to me. Other than that, yeah ... this is reference quality. No bones about it ... it's simply one of the most impressive video experiences I've witnessed at home

2) Sound - This is definitely a 'hot' soundtrack ... it is really in your face at times. That's okay though, it certainly stands up. Very good definition for not only the music, but the sound effects. While the effects aren't necessarily really showy as far as surround usage, they are VERY well done ... very natural.

For example, when the Black Pearl is attempting to attack the stolen ship by Sparrow and Crew ... there is a scene where the guy with the fake eye and his buddy load two cannon balls that are chained together into a cannon. When they shoot it ... it bolo whips around the mast of the ship. What is amazing is that the sharp crackle of splintering wood actually sounds like it is coming from above you ... as though you are actually on-board, standing below the falling mast. It is a sense of directionality I have never heard done as well as this before.

3) Movie - Well ... everyone has seen this before, so no point in commenting on the movie itself. I do have to say one thing. Dear god, I now remember why I fell in love with Kiera Knightly when seeing this money way back when. She is simply stunning in this movie. **** you haters ... she looks like an angel ... and the amazing transfer makes her constant nippling early in the movie quite the enjoyable sight :lol

Oh man, i thought i have seen everything that fanboys of this format war had to offer.
Talking on another board theres a Wii fanboy claiming Neilson videoscan is completly innaccurate, and that because the employees at his local best buy said hd dvd sells more, hd dvd is winning the format war. :lol

Edit anyone got the links to the charts that yall used to put up that had actual numbers for disc sales for that week, year and since inception?
I have looked a little but cant remember what page(s) they were posted.

Most HD-DVD early adopters were fortysomething - sixtysomething Home Theater Buffs. Most BD early adopters are twentysomething gamers.

It makes perfect sense that the HD-DVD Planet Earth sells better than the BD. Different demographics.

Merlin usually posts it every week when the numbers are posted.
Nah i found them after extensive looking.

Anyway, to file under useless ancedotal information:
I just got back from my local best buy( i wanted to see if they had any of the new Pio's), i go to the dvd section to look for blu-ray and they used to have hd dvd and blu-ray right next to each other, but now they put more BRD movies in place of the hd dvd and moved the hd dvd section some where else.
They also have a roller cart right in the middle of the store right when you walk in with all blu-ray movies. I have been to some other best buys and they all seem to be putting roller carts out with blu-ray movies in addition to their normal high def section.

If HDDVD doesn't take the weekly lead that week, then I don't know what will. :/

Captive: They may be separating the two formats to avoid consumer confusion (as if that will work). My best buy I go to has their libraries share half the shelf space on one of the shelves, split 50/50. The mega releases they actually give shelf space in the "New releases" section. Though I noticed that they took The Matrix collections off but Apacolypto and Pirates are still in the "New releases" section.

The Walmart near my home had their setup in such a way that Blu-ray titles were eye level on the shelf. The HDDVD titles were at the bottom so they were difficult to spot. Yes, the way the shelf was shaped, it made it a chore to browse that section. But that was months ago.

Seriously... I am pretty jealous of the HD DVD lineup that week. Really weak lineup for Blu-ray, although I am all over Black Snake Moan.

Just got back from Futureshop today and they're having selective Warner titles on HD DVD and Blu-ray at 19.99 CAD each.

Picked up Terminator 3 and The Goodfellas...will probably get Training Day later on.

They also had Constantine, The Road Warrior, Enter the Dragon and Bullit on sale to name a few.
