Why are people talking about manime needing to come back when jojo is airing on japanese televisions in the now.

Because it's easier to make sweeping generalizations born from ignorance than actually watching anime and paying attention to what is available.

Manime won't return in the same way the 80s won't return.

They might get rebooted for the modern age like Hollywood is rebooting properties for this decade's audience, but that just means Kenshiro will turn into Kenshi-chan, a magical girl using her ancient martial arts to fight motorcycle gangs, set in a post apocalyptic world.

It's funny, though I don't watch anime anymore I do believe I've heard him say something exactly like this 10 years ago, back when I used to watch it more often.

Good. Like 98% of it is straight trash. I'm talking about SW EU trash. Beyond saving. It's time to take it out back and put it down.

i never got the fascination with anime

everything is spiky and up in the air then when some dude is nervous its actually audible and its all so interesting somehow

I can never get enough of the ignorance of the people that don't follow the anime industry at all. There's probably AT LEAST one anime every single season that you'd all enjoy.

You should all watch Shirobako. :p

My first face to face with anime was when i was like 10, even though i watched robot carnival, heidi, candy candy, marco and similar shit during my childhood without recognizing it as anime due to personal ignorance.

I used to rent some stuff from my local video club, some that come to mind are Urotsukidoji, Devilman, Dominion tank police, Bubblegum Crysis, Goldenboy, Battle Angel Alita and Akira.

Man that stuff had soul, i wanted to see more and more.

I'm totally sure that the 10 year old in me that time, exposed to generic harem animes, would have just brushed it off and moved to videogames and the like.

Nowadays in the beginning of my thirties i'm not into anime as i was before, but seemingly there's a complete lack of attitude and soul in current animes and that "wow" factor is the missing spark needed to ignite the curiosity of a future japanese animation fan.

Yeah, there's usually one good show that everyone can enjoy every season, while a majority of the rest is fanservice trash (which can be enjoyable at times).

However, it's always been like this, it's just back then in the 90s and 80s, we didn't have the internet and simucasts to bring any of these types of shows to the west. Trashy fanservicey harem shows have always existed, this is nothing new.

That's what a lot of casual watchers and commentators, especially on here, fail to realize and refuse to admit: that they the were spoonfed the best by quality/genre filters like Toonami and they didn't see all the trash that were made at the same time as their favorites.

But, but SNAFU Too and Plastic Memories are full of fanservice trash, right, right? Wait am I still a casual? Dammit.. I'm going to go question my sanity and morality now.

Manga is better anyway so I'm alright with this. ;)

It would make me sad, but I know that anime will never truly die with how much its style and storytelling had influenced animation as a whole.

5-20 years? Just enough time for One Piece to end.

My man.

It's been declining the last 10 years for me. I'll see or 2 maybe once every few years but nothing is like the golden age of the 80s and 90s.

And yet have any of the Asian countries in recent years had a fraction of the global cultural impact of Japan?

It seems more that Japan is Shrinking and homogenising, but the others at least globally are not filling the void.

Look at Korea and the rise of the Hallyu wave. It's replaced the monstrous wave that anime was in the 90's. I mean, half of Southeast Asia is bowing at the alter for SNSD and Super Junior.

Pretty much, things like Texhnolyze bombed for a reason. People point to recent shows like Ping Pong as evidence that anime still does it, and yet that shit bombs too, like clockwork. Anime fans are just too insular, and it creates a self perpetuating cycle. Its less to do with content in any case and more to do with the delivery method of these series/movies and the amount of money being spent on them from both parties (creators and consumers alike).

Texhnolyze? Tell me more. Bombed for a reason? i.e bad, or because it was niche?

Anime in 2015 needs a Devilman like series

Well thats interesting you see because there is going to be a new anime adaptation of Devilman later this year.

I'm surprised more people just don't visit the Anime OT and ask for recommendations for shows that may interest them that don't include fanservice or something else they wouldn't like in Anime. The members there could probably pinpoint thar in minutes if it existed..

its not like there is a gigantic recommendations post or anything in that thread

All these problems with games and anime boil down to the bad state of the japanese economy. Maybe they will solve the problem in 5-20 years and everything is fine again.

Anime may be declining but how about Manga?

Seeing as Anime are largely Manga adaptations, and fronts to sell more Manga; are popular Manga filled with Moeblobs?

But the real issue is that it is not financially sound to produce an anime without heavy merchandizing. What are some of the things that can alleviate this?

I don't know enough about that industry to understand production there. Are the tools lagging behind? I know they're mostly digital there now but, are there efforts to further decrease that workload? Things like Paperman that came out a while ago seemed like some real promising technology.

Here, animation, albiet 3D has pitfalls too. Companies chasing tax incentives, employees working damn near minimum wage with no overtime pay or benefits or long term prospects. Shows chasing merchandizing too. It's a race to the bottom, and that's applicable for any industry it seems lately.

Edit: A fan of Anime for a while, not watching much lately but I just watched the amazing Ghibli documentary after reading this thread. As I work in a 3D Animation studio, curiosity fills me.

I also think a problem is that it caters to a certain demographic. I mean in a season you might have 1-2 anime for maybe a more mature viewers but besides that you have the "same anime in different clothing".

I really would love to see more adaptions of novels like Tatami Galaxy or things like Kaiba, that try something else entirely. The problem is the demographic though and even western "fans"/casual fans say they wouldnt want to watch these because they "seem boring" or "that doesnt look like the typical anime artstyle".

And then you have things like Akame ga Kill that someone recommended to me. i sat through all the 25 episodes of that shit and while the first episode seemed kinda good for a Shounen, everything after that felt like something I saw for already 20 years. It seems right now that western anime fans think that because a show has some gore, it must be good. (Similar to Elfenlied 10 years ago...)

I think the manga market is far more diverse than the anime market.
From what I heard from Japanese is is that manga are socially far more acceptable than anime as an adult.
