Holy shit, Knights of Sidonia may have the best production values of an anime ever

I was not impressed. Forced myself to get through the last episodes and then was surprised when it ended. Somehow I missed the climax.

Some of the space stuff looked great sure, but it was rinse repeat.

Spotted this on Netflix the other day and was shocked to see that it was a Netflix original. I've yet to give it a watch but Netflix haven't been kidding around with their other original programming so I've got some high hopes for this!

I tried to watch it cause it was on Netflix and there's so little these days left for me to watch to justify my subscription, but it was pretty bad.

The most gorgeous anime I've ever seen was "Garden of Words." I don't know what the production values are, but man I can't stop watching it for the art

This is a correct post. Garden of Words is absolutely orgasmic visually. All of Mokoto Shinkai's films are glorious scenery and lighting porn.

The character animations suck bad. But the action is really impressive. An overall enjoyable show.

Btw I absolutely love the "in between scenes" artwork that they show on every episode.

Shinkai is a fucking wizard, never seen anything that looks as good as his movies. 5CM Per Second, The Place Promised in our Early Days and Voices of a Distant Star are phenomenal as well.

I guess I gotta catch more of his stuff. That's the only one of his works I've ever watched

It was so beautiful, I've been mesmerized by it for months and once per week watch it and try to emulate some of its style in my art. I can't even come close, but it's some inspiration.

Yeah you do. 5 Centimeters Per Second is amazing as well, and The Place Promised in Our Early Days and his much older and much rougher but near completely made by one-man project Voices of a Distant Star are close favorites for me too. I still can't believe that he made Voices in almost half a year doing almost everything himself. Fucking nuts to me.

I don't mind CG in anime when it's used on mechs or other mechanical/structural objects, but the character animation in Sidonia and the Berserk films is horrendous in my opinion. Its just so awkward to look at.

Edit: Add Redline to the "great production value" -anime pile. Get to it OP!

Question: Is that native or did somebody speed it up?
Statement: This looks impressive, but it's a mecha. The biggest problem are the humans.

It's sped up from the original. Someone encoded the entire show in 60fps and is available in the usual places. Though the trade-off is more artifacts (less so if you use SVP)

It`s pretty good, considering the use of 3d models, but it is still nothing like Cowboy Bebop or Evangelion. It does look interesting though.

Thanks for the heads up. I actually think my sister has Voices of a Distant Star, I seem to remember her saying something about it and she owns a lot of anime. Maybe I'll call and see if I can borrow it.

I really need to check this out.

And I couldn't get past the first episode of Night of Sidonia, bored me to sleep.

Plot was way too cliche. Production quality was ok.

Nah if you want CG you need to go full blown like Appleseed Alpha.

I watched it all recently and I thought it was pretty good, although I must admit I didn't think the animation was all that spectacular.

I do look forward to season 2.

I mean, this was totally off radar to me but in my weekend boredom was browsing Netflix and decided to give it a try.

Holy mother of God. This is Attack on Titan in space but with an stratospheric budget. Sometimes I can't even discern what's CG from traditional anime, and the animation itself is top, top notch. Story is a bit cliché but at least it doesn't require a PhD to understand like Evangelion.

For those looking for an awesome sci fi, mecha anime to watch, look no further. GAF's take on it?

That's because it's 100% CG. There's no hand drawings anywhere in it. It really fails to portray Tsutomo Nihei's art (which you can get a small glimpse of in the "commercial breaks").

this anime looks so bad i turned it off to watch Kill La Kill instead because i just wanted to see some good looking anime one night..

maybe there's a relatively new dividing line between people who hardly notice or care if something is CG trying to look hand-drawn, and those who definitely notice and hate it. i hate it. it's a shame because i know i'm probably missing out on some good narrative because of how much i dislike it. it's the attempted mimicry of it, i don't mind CG when the art owns up to it and does cool stuff with the medium, like Tron: Legacy did. super stylized and cool.

It's pretty beautiful outside of the character models. It's a pretty good anime too. It's not Attack on Titan in space. The pacing and characters are a lot better.

Btw this show is just like Arpeggio-later episodes better than early episodes.

Guess that's why Japan can eat up this show, and sound effect of course,5.1ch is one of main selling point of BD version.

Yeah garden of words is beautiful, not just in animation and cinematography, but also the story. It's one of the most amazing films I've ever seen and I wanted it to go on forever.

Yeah I saw this too. It's standard setting. Beautiful. I want games to reach this level. Just speaking about the imagery, not the movie itself.

Speaking of CG anime,

Ghibli's new TV series is CG and it sucks. Super smooth 3D meshes clash with the artwork, make it cold. There's no feeling of soul with cartoon characters animated with interpolated key frame technique used for game meshes. They should've hired the guys responsible for Guilty Gear Xrd if they wanted to save money using computers but give the animation personality.

It's pretty in stills, but once the motion starts, no thanks.

"Garden of Words" is the perfect balance of the human hand and the cold computer.
