If you want some small rogue state with a dictator as a villian, why not Iran? Why not Libia? Why not Venezuala? If you want an actually plausible enemy nation, why not China? They're the biggest threat to the US economically and militarily they're constantly seeking dominance, and they can overwhelm any military power just by drowning you in bodies.

You don't have to nitpick at all to find the story far-fetched.

I can travel to China, of course. I can travel to Iran, Libya, Venezuela. I know many, many Chinese and Iranians who live in my city. They go home all the time. It's not scary enough.

I have never met a North Korean, and no South Koreans I know have met one.

If I am one of the rare people who travel to North Korea, I will be escorted by guards and government handlers the entire time, and I will be expected to bow to a statue of their leader as if he were a living god.

That is why they will have an appeal as an enemy far more than any other state who, I will grant, has far more military plausibility in this scenario.

No other nation on this planet today triggers this kind of "otherness".

so with this game having dedicated servers (360), does the long ass pause of host migrating go way please?

how about players joining mid-game thru?

are they matchmaking based on skill-level or amount of time played?

They were really annoying in Frontlines and I hate getting killed by enemies that I have no chance of killing in an attack. At least when I get attacked by a vehicle in some games there's always the chance I can take out the vehicle before I'm killed. Take out a drone, person still lives. Just seems cheap to me.

Ah, gotcha. Never played Frontlines myself...I think drones in Homefront are balanced by battery power, and I THOUGHT I read/watched somewhere that if you're marked by a drone, the drone shows on your minimap.

There were also some MP impressions a month back talking about how as the matches progressed, more and more drones took to the skies, but they weren't dominant--seem to be pretty easy to take out. I like the idea of drones myself, but understand your worries, too. Wish there were more MP impressions.

It just wasn't possible... China probably would have banned THQ from selling anything over there.

Do you really think THQ could get away with doing those public demonstrations dressed up as Chinese soldiers and launching China-themed balloons and all the other dumb shit they did? It would cause an international incident.

i just watched that video, it does seem that drone is a bit overpowered, but this is a demonstration, so hopefully a basic mid range rifle is able to take out a drone with well placed shots.

it looks like it is only marines vs Korean forces. What about the resistance? I dont know the story completely, but are there three races? Korean Invaders vs US Government vs The Resistance?

I kinda thought the drone looked balanced, if a bit underpowered. Took 4 rockets to kill most guys, it seemed, and looked like it had four direct hits on the Humvee, and it got away.

In MP, it's US Marines vs NK Army. SP has the resistance.

Game looks fun, but the graphics leave something to be desired. Maybe it's my eyes, but I would have expected it to look better.
No, you're right. It looks pretty crappy visually. Looks fun as hell, though.

I decided to get this on both OnLive for the console and 360 since I want to be able to play with my friends.

If it's similar to Frontlines, two sniper bullets take a drone out.

Oh... they updated the Kim Jong Un actor to match his recent actual appearance!

He is no longer unrealistically skinny and handsome for a member of that family. :p

He looks a lot more like him now, but I kind of think the original actor had a bit more charisma.

True. He was a bit more scary as a fit, charismatic face of a powerful NK.. but I would have laughed every time I saw it just because I know the truth.

It's funny how that timing worked out. 6 months ago, no one knew what Kim Jong Un looked liked, so at the time they first showed it... it could have been any actor they wanted.

That is quite uncanny. Clearly out Dear Leader is on THQ's payroll.

Homefront NYC subway ad I spotted after going home from classes today. Notice the Xbox 360 logos only on the ad.

Pardon the iPhone pic.

Walp. I'm surprisingly hyped...I hope it's good fun.

Any word on performance yet? Kind of nervous considering the fate of the PS3 Frontlines...

It's Unreal Engine 3. Based on history, it will probably perform the worst on PS3.

Not necessarily terrible, but the worst.

The best part about the game I think is playing on maps so different from your typical middle east or sci fi setting.

The extended firefight in Tiger Direct is a this is awesome moment.

mexico closing its borders to american refugees.
WTF.
It's a common aspect of speculative fiction of this sort. Part of it is used as a play on the obvious irony of Mexico closing its borders to the U.S. after years of immigration north. But part of it is also practical. Mexico's economy could never withstand such a massive influx of people that would result from something like this happening.

Decided to go ahead and preorder the game through Amazon. Crysis 2 failed me on both the PC and Xbox 360, so I went with Homefront. I love KAOS after Frontlines: Fuel of War, and will support any game they make.

What the hell, in that chapter 1 video he doesn't look out the window at all in the bus, he misses a ton.

EDIT: Sorry for the double.

This guy is awful at playing. :p

It's always the case that the most awful players get to put these sort of videos up first.

I could hear all this stuff happening outside the window but he was just staring straight ahead.

According to Wikipedia (I know, but they have a link), the original idea was to make it China, but they had two problems. First, it didn't seem plausible because China basically already owns the US (so much of its debt), invading would basically cost them a lot of money and probably wouldn't serve much purpose, and Secondly, they were worried they might have trouble selling other products there.

Beyond that, Korea is really a pretty good choice if you have to go beyond the usual suspects. Unlike Iran or Venezuela, they actually have a very modern, industrialized economy that manufactures a lot of stuff, it's almost in the world's top ten economies (it's in the top 15).

Still unsold. It was a decent intro but my word was it predictable:
the bus being crashed into after it turned the corner, the petrol station exploding, the suburbs being attacked in the middle of an argument, the deus ex machina of the big pile of C4 appearing randomly in someone's house
you get the idea. Anyway, I hope the rest of the game is better otherwise I'll wait until the price drops; I can't see myself dropping £40 just because it has an interesting multiplayer component.

Heads-up this just got a 5 from EDGE they called the story a 'my first war movie' kind of thing. Seems like they didn't play much of the multiplayer but described it as a poor version of Battlefield meets COD.

If anyone's willing to post a EDGE thread I can give you the info as I can't post threads at the moment.

I don't know much about this game at all (other than the Korea thing), but that chapter 1 gameplay didn't help. At all. Wholly unimpressive stuff, unfortunately.

I completely agree. Really underwhelming, by the numbers, etc. -- I have some hope for MP but, I'm sure now that I will not be purchasing HF day 1 (or at all, depends on MP impressions -- and no I don't have $60 to blow on a game to "find out for myself")
