I know it's more thriller than horror but I've seen it mentioned here sooooo....

I really enjoyed The Guest. It's average to decent for the most part but the whole last section was very cool.
Loved the haunted house

Certainly didn't blow me away like You're Next but it was good

RIP Herschell Gordon Lewis :(

I haven't gotten to his filmography yet. Where should I start, Two Thousand Maniacs, Blood Feast or The Wizard of Gore?

The Conjuring 2

Despite not being a big fan of his films, I have a hell of a lot of respect for James Wan. He has shown to be able to refine his directing talents and isn't content with just making a paycheck. He has a passion for what he does and a passion for horror. This became highly evident to me when I read the story of how he passed up a "life-altering" salary to direct Fast 8 so he could instead make this film.

I found The Conjuring 2 to be an improvement over its predecessor. For the first hour I actually thought that Wan was doing everything he could to subvert my expectations and scare the hell out of me. He seemed to employ every trick he has and even caught me off guard a few times with some of his scares. One of his most effective scare-tactics, in my case anyway, bottles down to camera movement. If a director can utilize this along with a little restraint, they've got me. We all know the trick where a character will look into a mirror, open it, and when the camera pulls back the monster is behind them. Wan isn't content in showing his cards that easily, he'll pull the camera back an extra 2 or 3 times if he has to, which in turn raises the tension for the jump.

In addition to this, Wan surprised me by doing something different with what I considered to be the best scare of the film.
The scene where Lorraine stands in front of the demon in the painting delivered the goods in actually creeping me out. The framing of that shot was very foreboding, that along with the shadow slowly scaling the wall until it blended with the same painting. Unfortunately, I thought that the tension went away as soon as the painting jumped at Lorraine with full on demonic mouth movements to go along with it.

This was sort of a turning point for me, where the movie lost it's edge and didn't deliver the scares anymore. It seems like Wan could only restrain himself so much before he reverted back to the predictable jump scare with creatures that are very forced in their designs. ThirstyFly nailed it when he said
Marilyn Manson nun, I actually had a good laugh when I finally saw it. The old man with the yellow eyes screaming "My House!" didn't really do it for me either.

There is a bit of cheese, but nowhere near as much as there was in the first Conjuring. Unlike that film, I think Wan mostly kept it together for the third act this time. There are a few cornball moments along with some pacing issues, but it maintains an atmosphere and has a decently satisfying conclusion. Overall, it didn't blow me away, but I did enjoy it. Here's hoping Wan makes another horror in the future and continues to improve for me.

What did you think of the
whole subplot about her hubby dying by falling onto a tree that lightening had hit perfectly turning it into a spike? Thought that was so dumb and added absolutely no suspense or substance to the main plot.

I know you're not talking to me but I thought
anything to do with their love for each other, the whole tree part, all that stuff, was cheesy as hell and unnecessary
.

I just watched the movie and had already forgot about that part. I get the intention, but it wasn't effective. I didn't care for the final scene either.

He turned down life altering money for the fast series, but I'm sure he gets a healthy backend of these movies. I agree Wan directed the hell outta this.

Screw the haters, love Refn's work when he's lost in his own head.

Edit: Also, Conjuring > Conjuring 2

Wasn't a fan of the more over-the-top demonic force(s) in this one, and the pacing was also a bit uneven, and also the power of love.
Eh.

I saw Blair Witch yesterday morning. It was very disappointing. The set up was fine and (a few) of the characters had good chemistry, but it just turned into loud noises the movie and had a ton of problems that people have been criticizing horror movies for for years.

Eh.

I wasn't a big fan of Neon Demon, it was better than Only God Forgives by a mile though. I prefer Refn's older, more traditional work. Loved the Pusher trilogy but then he kinda lost me.

Arguing with a couple of different people on FB that insist RZ's Halloween is better than the original...I can't even deal with this level of idiocy....

Some people just don't appreciate well-crafted suspense

No shit....the main blowback I'm getting is the half baked completely unoriginal "backstory" RZ gave MM which MAKES IT EVEN WORSE.

For me personally and I think for a lot of others the draw of the MM character was that we didn't really know shit and every time Loomis spoke about him he talked as if he were a man but also something supernatural. It was enough for to understand what you were dealing with but also kept you intrigued because there were still secrets to be had.

Then I had to go in on what he did to what might be my fav. character in any fiction...Dr. Loomis. Makes me wanna go homicidal lol.....

Jazzed to finally rewatch Neon Demon tonight, haven't seen since it came out. Wanted to bring friends to see it but it left theaters after a week or two....since then I've hyped it up and vowed to show it to my core group of friends despite knowing that they probably won't like it anywhere near as much as I do

But still!

So like I'd never in a million years say RZ's Halloween is better than the original. Or better than Halloween 2. Or better than H20.

But after those? I'd probably say it's the fourth best film in the series. I actually liked the backstory at the beginning, even if it was completely unnecessary. It's torture porn, sure, and at times it's pretty disgusting from a content perspective, but it was at least interesting? I dunno.

The sequel is legit one of the worst horror films I've seen though. Like good god so bad.

On that note, anyone here see 31? I see it's up on Amazon to rent and my temptation is strong to see how bad it really is.

I actually think Halloween 4 is criminally underrated...I love that movie lol, has a soft spot in my heart and always has.

Yeah, H4 is fine. It's 5 where the series really started to nosedive.

OK, I know...it's less horror and more drama...but the violence and costume design for some of the wasteland inhabitants definitely have it toeing that line.

If you'd prefer to not give the site a click, here's the video to the prequel short film.

I'm stoked for this (thought the first one was an absolute joy to sit through).

Awesome news! I loved Turbo Kid. Thanks for the link, I'll have to give that prequel a watch later. Now all I need is Hobo with a Shotgun 2 and I'll be a happy man.

I'm already about to explode with happiness...my heart couldn't take an announcement like that today as well.

I actually thought the Conjuring movies were decent. It's the Insidious movies that I don't get why people think they're so good

I didn't love "The Conjuring", but I thought it was a more-or-less competent big budget mainstream horror film.

"Insidious" just...I don't get the last third of that movie. I don't.

Agree on both, I really liked insidious until the end. At least it's not insidious 2, talking about rubbish...

Had anybody picked up the new Chopping Mall Blu-ray? It's loaded with features and I would really like to support the new Version Video line, but the price is quite steep for a blind buy. To add to that, I've spent a fortune on blurays the past few months. Decisions decisions.

Yeah, the price is absurd here. $53. I want it because it's silly fun and I'm a big Barbara Crampton fan, but that price... man. Way too much for an old b-movie. I'd love to support it too because I want to see more movies of its type released on BD.

I already own it on DVD, so I I'll be passing, but it really bums me out that they couldn't release it at a more affordable price point.

I've been thinking of making a Horror comic recommendation thread for October, and was wondering if I could get some input.

I'm very familiar with Japanese ones, and have read over one hundred different titles, so I think I mostly need Western recommendations. I'll be recommending Wytches, and I think that's pretty much all I know. I have a bunch of Harrow County I bought, so I'll check that out soon, too. Outcast doesn't seem like Horror from the first volume really. I've heard good things about the current Sabrina run...

Any recommendations help!

I like the movie for what it is, but I'm not sure I'd pay $30+ to see it even with the added picture quality and extras. This is what I got:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/21130942

It's $5 and comes with Chopping Mall plus 7 other movies. Of course the quality isn't the best (even by DVD standards), but I was satisfied.

Edit: one of my favorite things about this movie is that both the name and the poster kind of don't match what the movie is about. Regardless, that poster is an all time classic IMO. So good.

Harrow County
Colder
Outcast
Rachel Rising
Severed
Spread
Nameless
Clean Room
Through The Woods

In addition to the current Sabrina stuff, "Afterlife with Archie" is fantastic. I'll also second "American Vampire", "Clean Room", and especially "Locke and Key".

EDIT: And if you're willing to include slightly older stuff - 30 Days of Night is pretty significant. Black Hole is a weird body horror story that doesn't have much in the way of overt scares but gets pretty uncomfortable. Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing, especially the earlier parts, delves pretty deeply into horror.

It's crazy to think that most of the films in that little $5 dvd collection are all going to be released for about $30 apiece. I'm glad that they getting some love from the studio, but I wish they would have taken it a little easier on the pricing.

Definitely. I mean, on the one hand the high prices help fund the restoration of awesome movies and whatnot, so I buy from Criterion, Arrow, Synapse, etc. whenever I can. On the other, my entertainment budget is somewhat limited, so sometimes going the cheap route is the only option.

Go for it, I'd be interested!

On a similar theme, is there a horror books thread? Just got the big book of HP Lovecraft stories. Saving it for October, going to be a terrible read right before bed but I love it!

Checked out The Shallows last night....I love anything sharks and was interested in the premise so I came in with high hopes. Wasn't totally let down but was just kinda ehh by the end. I did enjoy it though.

Takes a lot of suspension of disbelief to get through the second half....

Never had imagined that The Conjuring is a that unimaginativ remake of Amytville Horror.

That said, TC is a great movie... But still, even when the bigger focus on the Warrens and Anabell was added, its so similar

Seeing Amytville Horror right now for the first time

Hi folks. It's my first time in this topic - I just realised it existed. I am a big horror boy, that's for sure.

However since Don't Breathe came out I haven't seen a horror film in the cinema (UK). Are there are more interesting horror movies coming out this year?
