Horror-GAF |OT|

I'm hoping HorrorGAF can help me out with this.

I have a 4yr old daughter that is determined to watch scary movies.
She sees commercials for things like Conjuring 2 and gets excited begging to go see it in the theater.

So being that Halloween is coming, in an effort to ease her into Horror movies, what are some kid-friendly "horror" movies she can watch that won't have her too scared to turn on the light in her own room, or even worse, trying to sleep in my bed every night?

For reference, she LOVES Goosebumps tv shows and the movie.
We've watched Hocus Pocus and The Witches just last night. There have been a few more that aren't coming to mind at the moment, but I'm having a hard time thinking of childrens "horror" that I would even find interesting enough to keep my attention.

That's where I'm hoping GAF can drop dozens of suggestions, some of which I'm sure i might have watched already, but hopefully many more I didn't even think of.

edit: on second thought, maybe a new thread in OT would be better?

Holding an American History 101 course for 15 yo in Sweden and coming up through Halloween I want to show them a horror movie that takes place in 17 or 18th century America. The only one I can find is The Witch, but considering the old english language in that I feel it might be too difficult for them to understand.

Are there other options?

Please avoid The Exorcist TV show. Thank you.

anyone watching the Exorcist tv show? any good?

I've been following it, and was initially extremely sceptical. However, its holding my interest so far.

The last episode depicts possession in a very interesting way I thought, a way that has never been used in the movies.

Speaking of the series, I'm really looking forward to the collectors edition of Exorcist III, which promises to contain Blatty's original version before the studio insisted on changes.

For real? Been interested but stayed away because it seemed a little CW for my tastes. I'll check it out.

It's good but deeply flawed.

The acting, writing, cinematography and all that is all very cheap and "CW" as you describe it. But the actual whodunit mystery of the killer's identity maintains the film series mantra of "Everyone is a suspect" and does it all super well, enough to carry the entire show.

It is even more CW than most CW shows. I enjoyed all four movies but I bailed on the show halfway through the first season because it just wasn't very good or interesting. The mask is appalling too.

You already mentioned Ash vs. Evil Dead which is great so I got nothing. Maybe that Exorcist show on Fox will end up good? (probably not)

How does Scream work? Cant imagine that a Slasher stretched over 10 hours doest feel stretched

Yeah like the above poster said, it's a murder mystery story and explores how the murders actually affect the people of the town. I personally didn't have a problem with the pacing of season 1, which was only 10 episodes. But they bumped Season 2 up to 14 episodes and it definitely felt like a slog.

Scream is like the definition of guilty pleasure TV for me. I love it but understand that it's a massively flawed show. I'd definitely recommend at least watching the first few episodes to see if you think you'll like it.

Hi folks. It's my first time in this topic - I just realised it existed. I am a big horror boy, that's for sure.

However since Don't Breathe came out I haven't seen a horror film in the cinema (UK). Are there are more interesting horror movies coming out this year?

Ouija: Origin of Evil is the only big horror movie left in the year and I'm entirely sure about its quality. It looks like a standard ouija board possession movie and probably used its best scares in the trailers to get a larger audience. I'd wait for reviews first.

There are two others (Incarnate and Keep Watching) but I've seen or heard virtually nothing about them

Then early next year we have Amityville: The Awakening, Rings, and Bye-Bye Man.

I remember hearing Bates Motel isn't too bad.

It's uh...something...

I got through about 2 seasons. The main plot doesn't have enough story to maintain that series that long so there are a lot of subplots involving corrupt cops, human trafficking, competing drug lords, etc.

I've been feeling the Halloween spirit so I've been trying to go back and watch some older stuff I've been wanting to check out....some quick thoughts on each

Blood From The Mummy's Tomb - Decent. Has it's moments and is a fun enough Hammer film, nothing amazing.

Horror Of Dracula (1951) - Awesome. Looks great, characters all on point. Really enjoyed it.

Dracula Has Risen From The Grave - Meh. I got an hour in and bailed. It looks nice enough but (for me at least) it's missing a lot of what made Horror Of Dracula good. Lee's portrayal seems....worse? Like bordering on saturday morning cartoon villain

Daughters of Darkness - Really really cool. Great soundtrack. The lead girl's acting was a bit weak but the woman playing Countess Bathory killed it

Definitely want to keep checking out the Hammer stuff. Need to get to Frankenstein

Did you guys see the preview? It was like a parody. Although I might be mixing up parts with the one about the scientist who goes into possessed people's minds.

The part where the little girl happily describes murdering someone in detail seemed ripped off from something too but I couldn't place it specifically. I think it might just be a tv trope.

Please, don't do what my mom did and decide Salem's Lot is good viewing for a 4 year old. That movie still fucks me up to this day.

Monster Squad, I guess, would count, though it's VERY '80s so there are a couple of spots where the kids talk like '80s kids did which is pretty rough language these days.

EDIT: Hell, I don't think Monster Squad would work now that I think about it. That's more 8-12 year old territory. I'm at a loss.

uhh don't breathe is great?

That's what people are saying yea. I thought it was a pretty by the books thriller with an extremely unlikable cast. Well shot but the plot isn't strong enough to carry a terrible group of characters for me. By the end I didn't care who survived or if they survived, everyone was a bad person and they all probably should have died.

I didn't really love Lights Out either, but I thought it was much more enjoyable. And for a kinda similar recent thriller with a group of unlikable characters I thought Green Room was much stronger. I'd give it one old man with
jizz in his mouth
out of five

Which is the best TV show remake/sequel of a horrormovie?
Not counting Hannibal or Evil Dead?

I watched the first episode of the new Wolf Creek miniseries a few nights ago. I liked it and the preview of the season looks like it could be pretty good.

Look for Vampire Lovers! I think there is a full copy of it floating around on YouTube, but I HIGHLY recommend picking up the BluRay. Its a gorgeous film.

Holy shit the snake scene in Friday The 13th pissed me off. Still can't confirm that the animal was indeed borrowed from an owner and did not find out about the death until the scene was filmed, but either way it's beyond messed up.

My god is Hellraiser III a giant piece of horse shit.

Only the church scene is legit great.

Edit: Oh god, the new Cenobites are the worst.
A CD throwing monster, what were they thinking?!?

4 is slightly better, and 5 (directed by the guy who's doing the Dr.Strange film) is actually quite decent.

Zero chance I will spend money on another Hellraiser movie. Would maybe buy a Best of with Pinhead having a good time best off but everything about the other movies sound so super horrible and look at the very best like poor mans version of the established mythology in the first part.

But its funny how there is a rule that big Horrorfranchises at the very latest jump the shark when they Move to New York.

Legit every Hellraiser after II is a giant piece of horse shit.
Hellraiser 4 in Space. Its like they had a contest to find the most stupidest setting for that franchise.
And isnt there one that is set in a MMORPG? 😂😂😂😂😂
Stupid idiots in Hollywood. There is a reason Clive Baker talks about the movies in the way he does.

I have unfortunately seen all of these....

Binging on Black Mirror, watched seasons 1, 2, and the first few of 3 over the last days, and I have to say, this show has probably best existential sci-fi horror I've seen...ever maybe? Or at least since SOMA. It's haunting, depressing, unsettling, bleakly morbid.

Favorite episode is The Entire History of You. Utterly heartbreaking story. This was supposed to become a film with RDJ at one point but it's gone silent.

Have you read the comics?
Got the Boom Reprints of the early Marvel Series today and it looks very good.

A lot of short stories by artists like Neil Gaimann, Alex Ross, Lana Wachowski, etc, that looks deeper into the mythology of the Leviathan and the cenobits.
---
What happened to the rumors about the new Hellraiser project with Doug Bradley, where even Clive was involved again? That sounded good but there is radiosilent for around a year now I think?
