Hotline Miami has sold 130,000 copies, talks on Piracy and more

70k hardly comes under much lower if the game has eventually reached 130k.

Well if I was offered a job to make $130k, but in the end was only paid $70k, I would consider that "much lower". Where is this rule it has to be less than half?

People can make all the assumptions they want, but the article doesn't say most were sold at $5.

Well there's plenty of other things to complain about in the game, including other bugs. I really want to support the developer because it seems like they have good ideas, I just hope they make a better game next time.

It's great that despite the games many flaws, it was able to sell that much. Kudos to cactus.

The thing about ironing out bugs is that it's kinda tricky for a small outfit to do if you don't have a test farm available to you. You can only fix the bugs you know about, after all.

I'll probably buy this at some point because it's got such great reviews and I love supporting guys like this, but the real problem isn't the money or OS compatibility or whatever, it's the time. Too many great games, not enough time to play them.

If the time is what you're worried about, it's a very short game. You can easily beat it in an afternoon.

One of the (if not the best) best gaming experiences i've had this year, but it's still bugged to hell.
In a usual 2 hours playthrough i get 1 or 2 freezes.
Last time i had to hardreset the PC, 'cause it wouldn't even let me ctrl+alt+esc/canc.
And i'm on Win7.

I had no idea the game had a reputation for being buggy; purchased a copy last week and played a few hours without any hitches whatsoever. Quite enjoyable, and I'm glad the developers have had some success with it. Put that OST out on iTunes if it isn't already!

While I understand that, yes, it's just two men, I hope this is a learning experience for them (cactus has never released anything like this) and Devolver (who do an incredible job of pushing the games but from what I've heard are hands-off with dev and testing). The bugs have cost them some sales, and maybe even an IGF nom and the potential for a chunk of change there -- judging (basically the mass filter that gives the jury a list of games to work with) ended about a week ago and a lot of people couldn't get the IGF build to run, or run well.

I think it'll continue to sell, though. It will be featured in the holiday Steam sale and maybe it'll wind up in a Humble Bundle late next year. And I'm glad to see Jonatan finding mainstream success. It seemed like him and Jason Rohrer were going to become huge a few years back, but the lo-fi, primitive stuff died out and they didn't look to evolve.

I bought it after hearing one of the tracks of the soundtrack and saw the Amazon deal going on at the same time. Well worth the $5 with a lot of replay value it seems.

Maybe if people want to play it, bugged or not, they should pay for it instead of stealing it.

How can people sleep at night pirating an indie game like this? Pretty despicable.

Well, whenever the developer provides direct patches to the team who uploaded it originally, I imagine people can sleep pretty good.

Started playing it last night and it's an awesome game. I imagine it will continue to sell for awhile as word keeps spreading about it. Glad it's been a success for them.

Who can pirate an indie game and still feel good about themselves? (if fact pirating anything is terrible)

That's seriously messed up.

... he has an extremely good attitude toward those who do Pirate and I would imagine, because of his acceptance and understanding, he made quite a few sales within that community.

Ehhh, not really. You imagined wrong lol. You're assuming that piraters have some moral compass and give a shit about the financial concepts on the other side of the equation, which they clearly don't.

But it's refreshing to see someone not act surprised for once that a PC game was pirated to hell and back. Sometimes these devs make the dumbest comments regarding PC piracy, like they expected their game to be the one and only game not to be pirated on PC,.

However you need to rationalize it I guess.

There's not rationalization needed, cactus was well aware that if pirates were playing a buggy version of his game, then there would be no chance of sales in that community so he decided to fully support it. The few pirates who saw this probably had what little guilt they may have felt soothed by his comments.

Clearly they don't give a shit, but the pirating community and the gaming community obviously intersect, and even pirates have 5 bucks lying around sometimes. Maybe I'm giving those type of people too much credit, but cactus's patches and comments probably got a FEW sales out of that group.

I knew this game would get pirated to the high heavens being such a small file size. You can probably attach it to an e-mail. Have they discussed making an XBL/PSN version? Even iOS/Android if possible. (I'm not sure how it would work with touch controls, haven't played).

Waiting to buy it until the Winter sale because I'm a cheap bastard and have a feeling that it will be cheaper than $5 during said sale. After reading this I'll probably just get it next time it's $5 though.

I think the quality of the game will continue to sell it copies for some time though. It's becoming one of those things that everyone hears about through some avenue. I decided to get it after hearing about it on Idle Thumbs. I've seen people on Facebook who haven't even played it yet sharing the music from the game.

I had some inital issues with bugs in the game, but after I got those out of the way... Such a great game. I'm really starting to enjoy bite-sized indie games more and more and I hope the game will keep selling.

Pirating indie games seems so weird to me..

I mean they are already cheap and most of them deserve the money

It is still buggy on some systems. Every time I hit mission 5 it hard locks and deletes/corrupts its save file. I have to uninstall from Steam, manually delete the folder it lived in, and reinstall to bring it back.

It's a great game and I love the soundtrack, very much looking forward to being able to play it through at some point, but buyer beware.

When almost literally everything else is working in Windows 8 that worked under Windows 7 has no problem, I would call it a bug specific to this game.

I played the whole game with Win8 Pro (GOG Download) and it worked perfectly well. I've finished the game at 100% and it crashed only 1 time.

For what it's worth, I'm definitely going to buy this now and I only didn't previously because I didn't know it existed.

Perhaps before they blame piracy they should blame how unreliable the viral marketing method is.

Some comments from pirates:

Hey, i hope everyone reads this. i had never made and account to comment, and i made this one just so i could give you all my opinion about this game. ive been trying out a lot of games and i seemed to get bored, but when i played 5 minutes of this damnn... i deleted that shit. and went to go buy it on steam, cause its motherFUCKING legit, in a new kinda way, its only 5 dollar these dev deserve those cinco DOLLAS

cactus, thanks for making this game and supporting broke ass chumps like myself get their game on. i may not actually buy this game but i will definitely spread the good word because i appreciate the work that you've done and your damn decent attitude. on another note, i also can't get my xbox controller to work, even with the update.

I pirate software that I can't afford. I just bought this game on steam though. Get those achievements. More like art than a corporation I feel like this game is.

A little wonderful game, I did everything Cactus69 said and it worked out fine, and once again thank you Dev for your tips to help make this work and most of understanding the reason why we pirate some just want freebies some just can't pay for games because of other rising cost. I hope more games like this is made in the future, because after this one I'll be sure to save up and buy this and many other titles of your's.

And more.

so people should be ok about buying a game that doesn't work?

i bought this game because i love the indie scene and i want to support good indie games, but that doesn't mean i should be ok with developers who release a buggy mess of a game

Worked fine for me, I adored it and couldn't put it down till I beat it.

First off I doubt he "supports" pirates, it's just that if you're going to pirate his game anyways, he wants you to play it right. I'm sure he "supports" you purchasing the game more than you pirating it.

Second if you have an Xbox controller you can afford this game. Period. -_-

Right, obviously the developer would rather have people buying his game. The point in posting the comments was to show that development support in the pirating community does generate more sales.

Nobody is saying that Pirates deserve support, only that if you take piracy of your game as an inevitability, then you may as well consider them consumers.

Was just me ranting about a dumb pirate. I don't know where I stand as far as supporting pirates. I don't think I would, personally.

Can't afford a $5 dollar game but pays for Internet connection to download it?, OK.

people pirate everything, indie game or not, doesn't make the tiniest bit of difference

I hope you don't like the 2nd either because that could mean it's worse or too different for a sequel since the 1st is great even if not to your taste.

Hmm, some people think it's great, but I think they have a lot of potential to make a game that isn't as divisive as Hotline Miami. They should start with a less condescending story and more meaty gameplay. I'll certainly buy their next game because this was was good enough for 10 dollars, but I hope they grow a bit and make a really good game next time.

Hotline Miami 2 should have:
Level editor and hub to play other people's levels.
A ton of levels (the first one is too short)
Multiplayer, both cooperative and competitive.

Top Bottom
