Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sold over 785K copies on Steam and over 350K copies on PlayStation consoles

I am honestly baffled. A small team of developers from France, some who are new to the industry, made a modern day "Japanese" RPG masterpiece that has finally dethroned Chrono Trigger for me after 30 years...

I wish the same passion was shared among Square Enix, but their heads are so far up their asses they are unable to do that.

SandFall should never even consider being bought out. They just made millions of new fans who'll buy their next project day one.

I completely agree with you.

I may be still overwhelmed by this game's hype after completing it, but this game is one of those that appear once a decade whose story truly touches both gamers heart and soul.

I can feel that the devs were a bit influenced by Attack on Titan.

They're ex Ubisoft devs. I don't think they're new to the industry.

SIE: PC isn't a competing platform

Jim Ryan: PC is a competing platform

I'm gonna listen to Jim Ryan on this one.

When you've raised prices on your platform everywhere but America, barely communicate/celebrate with your fanbase, and your platform lacks the means of enabling viral WOM & social media synergies...

...well, you get splits like these. Assuming the numbers are true, of course. And Xbox sales are probably a third of that of PlayStation's, at best.

It's been a thing for a while, and very much worth doing because even if SIE have said PC isn't a competing platform, you only need look at markets like Japan to see that it obviously is. The shared library (even for Day 1 games) is well over 90% between them, but PC having several advantages such as many more exclusives (especially if talking indies, certain F2P and older releases), free online, technically cheaper entry points (tho don't expect PS5 performance on a $300 laptop), access to Steam, more flexibility for productivity tasks, etc.

Pretending they aren't in competition for very similar gaming time & dollars these days is foolish, and similar to thinking PlayStation and Nintendo aren't competing for somewhat similar on the same metrics, even if Nintendo & PC aren't traditional "direct" competitors like Xbox consoles are. So when will SIE wake up and realize this?
Of course they compete indirectly. They always have and always will. I still believe the PC and console market have not merged into the same market. I guess I've glossed over a lot of the Steam vs PlayStation. This must be the new PC vs console.

Since when did comparing Steam and PlayStation become a thing? Have I just ignored that comparison in the past? Either way, good for Sandfall Interactive. I hope they are able to continue their success and create more interesting single player games for both PC and consoles.
Since the most hardcore boxers gave up on Xbox and are now Steam warriors, using Steam stats against PlayStation.

You're welcome.

Strange number.

before, Ampere say :

Things differ after that. The second-best platform for Expedition 33 was PlayStation, with 30% of players on that console. The game is a Japanese-style RPG akin to games like Final Fantasy, which typically do well on Sony formats. 25% of Expedition 33 players were on Steam, Ampere states.

and now, someone say "they sold more on Steam" for some reason.

Also, the rating of this game on PSStore is very very high.

The game have already 12k review score on PSStore. This is more than Like a Dragon 8 (10k) and close to Like a Dragon 7 rating (14k). Persona 3 Reload have 15k and Metaphor 16k.
And more than Indiana Jones PS5 (3,4k) and Forza Horizon 5 (7.6k). Oblivion got 14k rating (very high at launch, but CO:E33 gonna catch it)

And the physical version of the game was outsold in many stores...
Also best selling video game on Amazon.us, above Ghost of Yotei... (and you can't review on PSStore when you have disc version)

350k only on PS5 ? yeah sure... try again.

I bought this practically sight unseen. I'm looking forward to starting it... will be my next chill game.

Yeah, this doesn't make sense unless Steam users only collect digital games instead of of play them.

I'm going to wait until the devs give data like they did previously

It means the game sold like trash on North America and Europe on Steam. And mainly sold in Asia on PC.

Ampere doesn't account for Asia. Biggest language on Steam right now is Chinese.

They're both just estimates anyway.

They're ex Ubisoft devs. I don't think they're new to the industry.

Some of the higherups are ex-Ubi
Most of the team actually is new to industry with some of this is literally their first formal job out of college.

When Sandfall was doing their hiring run they didnt have that much money to hire vets.

I look at the Steam sales and am extremely confused why these people don't just play it on Gamepass. Nearly 800k would rather pay 50 bucks for a game instead of playing it for 12. Many must just be fucking hoarders.

This is not a good look for you.

If we use the "Number of Reviews" x 30 metric.....then it's easy to see that Expedition 33 sold around 450k copies overall (assuming 80% sold were digital and 20% Physical.

Keep in mind people that have the physical copy of a game can't review it on PS Network.

So I think this research company is correct.

I majority game on my pc but bought it on PS. My pc would have given me better graphics etc too . But I prefer rpgs like this on console and on the sofa.
On cdkeys it was £26 so even half the price of console.

Still rather do that than use windows store garbage.

^ it spiked big time on Thursday, during Golden Week in Japan. And it has been peaking very early in the day which presumably means most of the players are in Asia.

So yeah I can believe the crazy Steam sales #s after taking China + Japan into account.
Thursday was a holiday in many European countries. Also the game has gotten a lot of spotlight in european gaming media. So makes more sense to be european players and not japanse players.

So essentially this is great higher management and great job from the new hires

Of course they compete indirectly. They always have and always will. I still believe the PC and console market have not merged into the same market.

This is where we differ. I wouldn't say PC and console are 100% the same market, of course not. But the similarity in software libraries and growing similarity in player bases can't be ignored. Just as one example, look at how many Japanese 3P games prioritize Day 1 Steam support this gen, versus last gen where that was still a rarity, let alone 7th gen where it barely ever happened.

They wouldn't be doing that unless they felt audiences were increasingly present on the platform for their games. That's been happening a lot in Asian markets specifically, you can even see it in Japan let alone South Korea and China. There are still some segments of audience types more dominant on console (in terms of PlayStation, I think that's definitely the case with cinematic 3rd-person action-adventure games for example), and the same goes with PC (i.e MOBA, MMO, 4x strategy, life simulators etc.).

Maybe just my opinion, but I'd say convergence between console & PC is probably like 80% of the same audience type these days, whereas back in say 5th gen, it was probably 20% at best. I'd love if hard data existed to bear this out, but that's probably an impossible task.

I guess I've glossed over a lot of the Steam vs PlayStation. This must be the new PC vs console.

Yeah, it kinda is x3.

Didn't even the French Prime Minister even celebrate the game's success?

We'll probably get official sales update soon and maybe even platform breakdowns from the studio. Or if not them, certain market sales trackers might provide some breakdowns for us.

Now the highest rated user score game on Metacritic of all time.

Weird metric i know but seriously even great games usually get some very upset people because their game crashed that one time.
Or my favorite review bombs, the game doesnt have Russian language.

This analytics sites are full of shit to be frank.

They keep doing the trophy or being in the library truck, and there are half a dozen ways this could heavily skip real data.

Just an example, you buy a key in a dubious site (piratery most of the times) you register it in Steam and that's it, it counts as a legit sale for their statistics being in your library.
