How am I supposed to feel about the Logitech G502 Hero and the Razer Basilisk Ultimate?

So what's the deal?

  • Yep. Holy crap that is one hell of an unoriginal design by Razer.

I'm a fanboy of both companies, this is purely a question of imitation being a hella profitable form of flattery.

I'm totally ignorant about the story around these mice, this is an opinion thread, if you know what's up tell me, don't flame me!

For me, the Logitech G502 is the beginning and the end. I've been chain using them since they first came out. I love no other mouse. Whenever one dies (read: the early models' knitted cord frayed) i get a new one.

Feast your eyes on the greatest gaming (and design) mouse I've ever encountered. And i prefer having all the weights in.

But, Lo! A Razer mouse exists which appears to be a barefaced copy, with a few minor tweaks to ergonomics, weight and hardware.

Seriously, take your pick. It's got little arrows to either side of the scroll wheel, it's got two buttons wristward of that wheel and if the nearest one doesn't unlock the wheel spin I'll eat a shoe, it's got virtually the same division lines on the palm section and presumably as many of the same thumb buttons at they thought they could get away with. The grip on the thumb rest is even lifted from the G502 Lightspeed model. It's got the same slightly extruding finger buttons, sightly broader perhaps but i never found the Logitech to feel cramped...

Which came first? I believe the first iteration of the Logitech G502 came out in 2014. The Basilisk Ultimate in 2019.

So, look, this is superficial and subjective I know, but the extent to which Razer appears to have done an absolutely rank bit of copy catting of Logitech here is as nauseating as it is confusing.

Why did they do it? Why didn't they just make their own design, as they already have done, to amazing affect, many times? What is their excuse? Do they ever acknowledge this? Why? Why not?

I am big on Razer. My first razer was a razer Krait back in 2005 or 6 or 7 or something. It was ballin'. I've got a Razer Blade 14 in the mail to me AND I dropped way too much on a limited edition Cyberpunk Death Adder Extreme or whatever it's called, because I'm going to be doing a lot of wireless work on my 4k tv as a second screen. SO I'M NOT SHITTING ON RAZER.

I'm just asking this question: How am I supposed to feel about this clear bit of shameless imitation?

(if you want to type "feel how you wanna feel ay dun' give ey FOCK" you can turn in your "a forum is for the free exchange of opinions" certification at the door on your way out)

I have both mice, really LOVED the G502 for a long time, but after recently getting the Basilisk, it's now the new number 1.

It combines a few elements of DeathAdder, G502 and G600 and the custom profiles/button mapping with custom lights is very nice. Smart infinite scroll wheel works pretty much how you think it should and being able to click the mouse wheel left/right for a few extra buttons that you can customize is REALLY nice. Basilisk is a great mouse.

G502 looks more ergonomic than my favorite mouse, the wired Logitech G Pro. I like the G Pro more than other mice that might feel better in the hand because it has in my opinion the best sensor, the PMW3366. At least, it used to. Current iterations of the same exact mouse with the same look and same name use a HERO sensor, which I have tried in several better shaped mice but they can't quite meet the perfection of the PMW3366 in my anecdotal experience (though it's still good).

I'm tempted by the ergonomics in the G502 but looks like it uses a HERO sensor. Unless it's like the G Pro and they just changed it. The fact that they change sensors in mice without changing the name or look makes it unnecessarily confusing and especially hard to tell what you're getting if you're just shopping someplace like ebay.

If anyone knows of any mice that use the PMW3366 but have a more ergonomic/right-handed design than the G Pro PLEASE fill me in. I wish I had some idea how this Razer Basilisk Ultimate feels but with no frame of reference for its sensor you'd simply have to try using it.

I have always preferred the feel of Razer mice and have the Basilisk. I think Logitech’s are probably better quality but to me due their choice of plastics don’t feel as good use. But you won’t go wrong with either.

All i can say is the g502.. I'd be happy if it's the only wired more i ever use. I prefer heavy mice so that probably is what decides it for me.

There is a g502 version called the "Lightspeed", not the "hero", so maybe that'll have an eye you prefer?

I was going to but the G502 once, went and tried it but I found it to be uncomfortable in my hand, and I found that thumb rest distracting. I went with the G403 and it's the best feeling mouse I've ever owned. Also got the G Pro Wireless, but that mouse feels a bit too small to me.

Thanks. I just took a look and while Logitech makes it unclear exactly what the "Lightspeed" is, it does still use a HERO sensor.

Lots and lots of details about mice are incredibly unclear. Waaay back I played Halo 1 with a GE branded PS/2 mouse that was probably like fifteen bucks and felt perfect. When the buttons finally started wearing out, I replaced it with the exact same mouse in a different color produced years later and it was utterly terrible. I've been chasing the dead perfect feel of this broken mouse ever since. It's difficult to even define a reference of what you want because mice that look exactly the same can just flat out change with no indication whatsoever. Only way is to test it yourself.

I used a g500 for years, and then finally had to replace it.

After trying and returning other mice, like the g pro, I settled on the Zowie EC2 and it fits my hand perfectly. Already bought another for replacement. Simple, yet works flawlessly.

From what I've seen from reviews the basilisk is the better mouse. I don't really care when companies shamelessly copy each other as long as the imitation is better and/or cheaper.

Lightspeed is the wireless adapter that replaced Logitech's Unifying adapter.

Razer is pretty derivative, they've also pretty much copied Logitech's MMO mouse (G600), but failed to include the best feature about it, the third mouse button.

The most shocking about this thread though is this statement. What the hell is wrong with you? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Also this is currently the best mouse on the market:

Logitech uses cheaper switches which die sooner, so for that reason I’m out.
Logitech use Omron switches, like everyone else. There can always be a bad batch. Several Steelseries mice were notorious for that. Omron switches used to be a lot better, and were produced in Japan. Now they're made in China, and have a much shorter life span.

Corsair makes a copy as well.

Never tried razer, but I've heard they're generally junk products marketed towards younger gamers.

G502 is GOAT. I love having all the weights in it and the sensitivity set to 3200.

I have a Razer Death Adder that's like eight years old now, and it looks and feels like it did the first day. Quite contrary to my Logitech mice, that ALWAYS suffer from a lot of wearing out of the rubber sides under the thumb and failing/double clicking buttons or scroll wheels after a year or two. I'll gladly take a Razer over a Logitech in the future.

G502 hero is my go to mouse. Just like op, when it breaks, a new one comes. It's just too good. Not heavy, not light, perfect size, perfecto weight...love everything about it.

Mr. Community
I am rejoyed to meet another member of the Church of G502.

Indeed, the finest mouse ever made.

As for your topic, razer went on record saying they loved it and wanted to improve on it. A fool's errand, although the latest basilisk 3 gets veeeery close to the 502.

I´d pick neither, just in case they are also copying Logitech´s programmed obsolescence design.

Older 502 with the japanese switches will last forever.

Interesting. I'll have to look into them if my Logitechs ever fail me. I got the impression that Razer was the Bose of PC gaming.

I wonder if Logitech Whote Labels some mouses for other manufacturers to buy? would make sense given the age of some of the designs, allowing logitech to open up a 2nd stream of income by licensing designs out, or even strait up manufacturing them for others.

The G502 is an amazing mouse, but Logitech is a shit company in many ways and refuses to fix issues plaguing their products like double clicking. Moreover, their warranty support now tends to be horrible.

So yeah, I'm okay with another company copying one of their best products and selling it cheaper.

One thing to know about the razor basilisk ultimate is that it does not have the "hyper scroll" feature that is on the g502.

I have a 502 lightspeed, it is pretty great but the mouse buttons are a bit too flappy for me and the scroll wheel is kind of loose, makes noises... they're all like that

I also have the razor basilisk V3 wired version which does have the 'hyper scroll" and it is simply glorious I only use it for work and it's the best thing ever.

When razor releases a razor basilisk ultimate V3 or whichever wireless version comes with the free scroll wheel, I will surely buy that for my gaming PC and swap out this G502 which honestly is good but it's just low quality, not sturdy and rickety.

These are the typical voices of the "loud minority", which in this case are snobs who shit on Razer because it's not their favourite brand. Keyboard and mouse snobbery is like console wars, but x100. Razer had some quality control issues on their headsets in the past, but these things can happen with products from any brand.

I like the Hero mouse, but my experience and reviews the switches are cheap in it. Evetually double clicks all the time and/or cant click and drag. Does Razer solve that problem?

Yeah I've encountered those people in the mechanical keyboard market. Apparently that is a hobby unto itself.

As I said, my Razer Death Adder is from 2013 or 2014 and has been through a lot, and not a single unwanted double click ever. It's still like new.

Yeah, totally. I used to be something of a mechanical keyboard nerd myself, and I still own like 10-15 of them. But the hate "bread ad butter" keyboard brands get from owners of boutique keyboards is absolutely ridiculous. A typical Razer or Corsair keyboard will cost freaking €200-€225, which is more money than a large percentage of humans make in a year, and these snobs will look down upon that as it were shit, just because those are brands anyone can grab from a store shelf. And they forget that a damn €10 keyboard will do the job just fine and last a couple of years, too.
