How do we reconcile the disparity between critic reviews and user reviews?

Game journalism isn't what it used to be. It died around the end of the the PS360 era.

Now it's all about making sure the game ticks off certain criteria from a checklist.
... which, if true, is honestly fucking horrendous, if you think about it.

Games that try something "new" or go "against the norm" will get completely annihilated by this kind of approach. Especially, those that aim to avoid "checking any lists".

That's cool Individuals can definitely have different opinions from the mainstream press.

I find opinions like this threads so eye rolling. E.g. Last years Neogafs top 5.

1. Baldur's Gate 3 metascore 96
2. Tears of the Kingdom metascore 95
3. Alan Wake 2 metascore 89
4. Resident Evil 4 metascore 93
5. Starfield metascore 83

The next 5 I'm pretty sure are above 80 as well.

The OP said disparity like what disparity lol. Collectively everyone's in agreement.
Every gamer is part of some collective hivemind-like mentality apparently. Well, according to your generalization anyway.

Sounds like you have some personal justification or need for your adherence to review scores.

What???

Just because GAFs tastes align with the mainstream press doesn't mean there's a hivemind.

No idea what you mean about my personal justification I was commenting on GAFs game of year.

Critic reviews are just marketing while user reviews are sincere opinions on a game.

Only way to reconcile those two would be for devs to deliver good videogames, like this:

I just ignore critics attached to media companies - corrupt to the core and no shortage of agendas for a lot of them. If I need opinions there's 3-4 indepenent YouTube reviewers I'll check out. Karak, SkillUp and a few more. Their word isn't gospel to me and I don't always agree 100%, but they offer a level headed perspective most of the time.

The only user reviews that are valuable to me are those on Steam. At least it requires a purchase. User scores on sites like MetaCritic are absolutely useless. It's just culture/platform wars unending.
