How often do you replay games?

I rarely play games over again. Barely have time to play the ones I have. But I hardly ever sell them off. Something about them that screams keep me. Only time I usually sell them is if I've got another version on the PC or something. I really should seek help.

Depends on my ability to change things up with each playthrough.

If I'm able to replay the game in a different way (sidequests, new game+, different character(s), etc.), at some point I'll probably be going back to play it again. So usually I can jump right back into games that tend to provide these things, like RPGs and action games like Bayonetta or Resident Evil.

If the game is essentially the same thing with every playthrough, or it takes a long time before I can switch things up in a significant way, I usually never go back to it.

I replay most of my games. Hell, a lot of them I replay as soon as I finish them the first time. I don't trade in my games because I don't buy bad games. :P

Hardly ever, once I experience a game once I hardly have the urge to again. Its so hard keeping up with games these days anyways. Plus I probably will just move on to the multi player cause I get bored of the predictable AI.

I rarely watch a movie twice either..

Usually, I replay games I haven't played for a year.
However some games like Pikmin 2 and Paper Mario are always enjoyable regardless how long I haven't played them.

Last game I replayed was Bayonetta, about 4 times I think. But you are a real goddamn fool if you don't play that game multiple times.

I'm fighting to finish it just one time, sadly.

Single player, story driven games? Hardly ever, unless it's one of my favorites of all time. There are just too many other games to play, I don't have time to play the same thing again. All of my "replay" time is spent with multi-player games like TF2.

If it's a Resident Evil game, often. Otherwise, virtually never.

I've lost count of how many times I've replayed RE2 and RE4. Will be replaying RE5 for the 6th time when the Move patch goes live.

Almost never. I played through inFamous, Earthbound, Secret of Mana, and Kingdom Hearts I and II twice.

Five games over ten plus years? Not often.

Depends on the genre. Skill-based stuff like arcade games and action games (DMC, NG, Bayo, God Hand, Shinobi, etc) I replay many many many times. Plot-driven games I very rarely play more than once (or after I've gotten all of the achievements). If I do, it's usually years later, after I've basically forgotten everything about it.

I'll replay Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage II and at least one of the Metal Gear Solid games annually. There are a lot more games that I'd like to replay, but I've got too big a backlog to go back to other games too often.

Plenty, probably as much as I play new titles.

Today I decided to replay Mirror's Edge. I also have a kink I need to get out by finishing up another Witcher playthrough before 2 comes out, and I'm sure continual play of League of Legends.

Classic Nintendo games I replay every two years or so (Zeldas, Marios, etc)
Other games, Resident Evil for example, every couple years when I get that itch to play

Worth mentioning that I almost never replay super long games, even if they're really good (FFXII for example)

You should. Final Fantasy XII is much better the second time.

With older gen games, I usually replay them when I get a random urge to do so.
I only replay current-gen stuff if it's necessary for trophies or if there is a new game + with bonus content/endings. (like the Uncharted games, Infamous, Nier, etc.)

I used to when I didn't have much games (and more time), but now, wow, if I attempt to replay stuff, the backlog just piles up.

As everyone have said, it depends on the game.

NES games, which are usually pretty short, I replay a couple of times per year. Long ass JRPGs maybe once every other year.

Almost never. And the only times when I do is when they give you some awesome bonus that makes playing through the entire game again worthwhile (invisible camo in MGS1, Patriot + Cold War camo in MGS3, new characters in Sonic Advance and Kirby Canvas Curse etc.).

Not often, though there are a few rare games I replay as soon as I beat them. This gen, I twice played through MGS4, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3... and probably no more than 2 other games of similar length. I never replay RPGs or long sandbox games.

I try to play pretty much everything and I don't like spending time doing something I've already done, I guess.

Though there are a small handful of games I replay every few years. Deus Ex, and random games from the MGS, Thief and Splinter Cell series'. I have to get my stealth fix.

Depends on the game, most of the time ill beat it and sell it though. Ive played through LUNAR SSSC on a few ocasions though lol

I don't replay games very often, but those that I do (Halos, Shining Forces, EDF...), I replay at least two or three times, if not more.

I have never traded in or sold any of my games.

This. Theres also a small handful I replay yearly without fail.
I also have games that I don't replay but put in to dick around in for an hour or two like Jak 3 or FarCry 2.

I replay games quite often. I became a Dragon Quest fan with DQ8 in 2006, and those games have quickly become my favorite to replay. Additionally, I've replayed MGS3 20+ times between the two versions, and the three numbered Halo games a handful of times.

I think it is wasteful to not replay games that you keep in your collection. I also find much enjoyment to it!

Depends on the game really.

For me, any mainline Final Fantasy game except XI but including X-2 always has the possibility of being replayed. I love me some FF.

Also for the past three years I've replayed the three Xenosaga games every summer, although this year I decided not to since I'm trying to clear as much of my backlog as possible.

Most of my other games don't typically get replayed start to finish (with some exceptions), but I do go back to alot of them just to mess around once in a while.

I've replayed this thread a couple of times!

Also, I replay games all the time. Good games are replayed games. Bad games are the ones forgotten forever.

The more I liked a game, the more likely I am to replay it and the sooner I will replay it. I have replayed maybe a 1/2 of the games that I own and have beaten.

Replayability = Fun, addictive, good gameplay.

I seem to be opposite most people on this one: I love to replay longer games like RPGs, but am not all that compelled to replay shorter games. And I replay most of my favorite RPGs every year or two.

Same here Aeana. Heck, I replay The 7th Saga once a year. =P

Not as often as I would like. There are a few games that I have played so many times that I've long since lost count, Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger being the most prominent of the lot. There are a number of games that I have held on to over the years with the intent of revisiting. The problem is there's rarely a lull, and if there is, I'm usually preoccupied with a new release.

I try to not to buy games that are disposable experiences but the ones I dislike or complete and never see myself playing again (e.g. Red Dead Redemption) I trade or sell quite promptly. Even with an educated purchase, you never really know until you sit down and simply play the game.

Strange as it may seem, I tend to play long games over again. I've played through Fallout 3 a lot... FF7, FF8, FF9, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, etc etc. But yeah, anything that I feel is good enough for a revisit. Metroids, Zeldas, and other just all around good games get replays from me.

There are very few games I replay, but the ones I do become almost rituals. Metal Gear Solid 3, Portal, Half Life 2, Halo, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X... all games I have replayed several times years after release. I'd also say Team Fortress 2; while it doesn't have a story per se, I go back to it after long breaks and play it for a while then stop again.

Usually just after a sequel is announced. For example, I went back and got my Platinum in inFamous this week.

Excluding sandbox titles like Europa Universalis 3 or Victoria: Revolutions, I generally only replay RPGs and occasionally the Metal Gear Solid series, SoTN, or other random titles that I found particularly addicting. I see to give preference to retro games over the current generation as well. Over the past year and half I've probably replayed most of the classic RPGs from my youth, and I imagine the fact that it had been almost decade since I replayed them made them more appealing. In just about everyone I've played through, there's been something storyline related that I didn't pick up on at 12.

Soul Blazer for SNES is probably the one title I've beaten more than any other, primarily because I do an annual play through during the last two weeks of December.

As far as this generation goes, I want to say the only games I've replayed were Mass Effect 1 and 2, although I've beaten Mass Effect 2 about 5 times since it's been released. I'll also occasionally binge on Fallout 3 or Oblivion for a week or two, but I'm not sure if that would count as replaying since I'm just messing around with the character I've already completed the game with.

As others have said, it depends on the game. Doesn't really matter what genre, just how much I enjoyed the experience. These are the games I've replayed the most (that I can recall):

~ The Mark of Kri (PS2) - 6-7 times
~ The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (PS2) - 5-6 times (I'm a big LotR dork)
~ Assassin's Creed (360) - 5 times (yes, the first one)
~ GTA IV (360) - 4 times
~ Cold Winter (PS2) - 4 times

There are probably over a dozen games I've played through at least twice, but the ones I listed are my most replayed. Star Fox 64 was the first game I ever beat by myself, I played through that good number of times as well.

I also like replaying games if community mods change the experience enough. For example, I'm replaying through Max Payne 2 right now because I found a mod that allows you to play from a first-person perspective, it's pretty neat :) Little things like that are all it takes sometimes.

Basically, if I have a game in my library, it's because I know I'll want to replay it at some point, Red Dead Redemption being the most recent example (on second playthrough now for poops and giggles).

It really depends on incentives (I.e. bonus costumes/items, achievements) and the backlog. Time is another huge factor; I played through classics like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Zelda:ALTTP more times than I can count, but I was a kid and had after school and entire summers to game to my heart's content.

These days I spend a majority of my waking hours working, and trying to split off time between my wife, friends, family and errands. It really limits gaming. I'm lucky if I find the time to finish anything *once*.

All the time. Though, I don't go 100% completion the second time around, and some types of games I won't replay. Even really good games like Red Dead Redemption I have no interest in replaying because of how much fat there is. Reliving all those horseback conversations or all that hunting is sickening to think about.

oh, and some games I replay right away if I really liked them. Alpha Protocol, Infamous, and Mass Effect 2 are recent examples.

not often, though I've replayed abe's exoddus/abe's oddysee a few times and Mass Effect 1+2 (for the different ending/choices)

Amazingly, Half-Life 2 and Metroid Prime are literally the only games I've fully replayed.

Too many new games to spend time on even the best of classics, with those exceptions.

Wow...I am SHOCKED at the number of people in this thread who say they never replay any of their games. We are talking about replaying at all at any point in your life, and not replaying again directly after you have beaten it the first time, right? I know I've seen those "GAF plays" threads on here, so many this thread just needs more representation from those types of gamers.

I play all of the games I really enjoy (i.e. my favorite games) at least 2 times. For example, I played RE4 and DMC3 for the first times last fall. I want to play RE4 again at some point, and I want to do another 2 runs through DMC3 sometime (a first playthrough as Vergil, and another as Dante). To give an example of even older games, I'd like to once again revisit FF6, FF7, and Chrono Trigger at some point in the next couple years (I believe it will be at least my 3rd playthough of each of those).

What do you do with games you probably won't trade in, ever traded something in to repurchase it later?
I keep it simple: I only keep my favorite games - the ones I really love and know I will want to replay. I see no reason to keep around games that I don't like enough to want to play again. There is too much money wasted by doing that (by not trading in or selling), and too much space taken up. It seems stupid to dedicate space on a shelf to plastic boxes and optical discs that I'll never again make use of.

As for your question about trading in and repurchasing later: I traded in my entire PS1 collection right before I left for college. I figured I would be too busy with college life to want to play games, which was true, but now that I'm out of school I find myself wanting to replay some of those older classics. Luckily, I have been able to purchase most of those games on PSN for a low price, but there are still a few titles that I'm waiting for (and may end up tracking down disc versions if they never come to PSN).

I replay mine all the time, mostly for enjoyment and to get my monies worth. The addition of Achievements and Trophies this gen also helps when replaying games.

I have a hard time replaying games nowadays without getting bored. But i can remember replaying Super Smash Bros multiple time back in the day on the N64.

Rarely, if ever. Resident Evil 4 may have been the last time I did, and that's only because it was a different version and I wanted to unlock the Seperate Ways part. I've got too many other games to play so once I'm finished with one it's on to the next one.

I used to replay games a lot. But this industry has a serious problem.

It's pumping out way to many goddamn good games at a rapid pace. You barely have enough time to play your latest pickup before something else comes out that you want and it's not that rare for 3-4 great games to all come out on the same day.

It's a far cry from the 8bit NES days but, please, slow it down a little.

This combined with the 8bit (and before) generations now being in there 30-40's with easier access to money and the advent of online multiplayer things just keep moving forward. The only thing that seems slow is release dates because they announce titles so damn early. Add trophies/achievements into the mix, the fact that there is more fun to be had in another title, or other stories to be told and going back and playing the original Metal Gear or Final Fantasy 7 just seems like a huge waste (or quite boring) regardless of whether or not it was a good game for it's time.

It's a wonder some companies see such shitty sales.

Complete Playthroughs from beginning to end off the top of my head (omitted games I've only done once)

Resident Evil - 12 times, RE2 - 19, RE3 - 7, RECV - 5, RE4 - 16
Dino Crisis - 4, DC2 - 5
Final Fantasy - 3, FF4 - 3, FF5 - 2, FF6 - 5, FF7 - 4, FF8 - 3, FF9 - 2, FFX - 2, FFT - 3
Zone of the Enders - 4, ZOE2 - 8
Ar Tonelico - 2, AT2 - 3, AT3 - 2
Silent Hill - 5, SH2 - 12, SH3 - 3
Symphony of the Night - 26
Azel:PDRPG - 6
Parasite Eve - 5, Vagrant Story - 5, Xenogears - 3
Xenosaga - 3, XS3 - 3
Ico - 4, SOTC - 5
Metal Gear Solid - 11, MGS2 - 5, MGS3 - 3, MGS4 - 3
Ys I+II - 4, Ys III - 6, Ys IV - 2
Skies of Arcadia - 2, Valkyria Chronicles - 3

I'm missing a lot but those immediately come to mind when I think "series I replay often."
List obviously doesn't include pre-Saturn/PC Engine era titles or arcade style games like shooters, fighters, or racing games, which I play all the time. Hell I just realized I omitted all of the PC games I've replayed, like Crysis, Freespace 2, Max Payne 2, Mirror's Edge, Jedi Knight 2, Half life 2, Deus Ex, Vampire Bloodlines, System Shock 2, Diablo 2, etc.

I don't know if I can replay my games anymore. I just don't know how some gamers can play through normal and the hard/insane modes on some games! I just can't get myself to do that.

There are only a few JRPGs I ever replayed which were Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and FFIV DS, but FFIV was a remake so I guess it really doesn't count.

A few games I can always replay are the 2D games like Super Mario, Metroid Zero Mission or Super Metroid, etc. I'm also replaying some MetroVania games on my DS.

But other than those, I don't know if I can replay the recent console games. The only exception is if there's co-op, like RE5 or Borderlands for example. With these, I like to play it alone once and then it's always fresh again to play it over with a friend/cousin/brother.

I don't think I can replay something like Bioshock, Half-Life 2, Alan Wake, God of War 1,2,3, or Fallout 3 for example. There's this one guy who said he beat Bioshock 9 times. I don't think I can ever do something like that. I replayed Ocarina of Time twice but that's really about it!

Usually once these days since I have so many games, so many games to play. Though I do admit the desire for reply does pop-up every now and again, for example, I am getting the strong urge to replay both Pikmin games.

Arcade style games get replayed usually tons of times (Like Fighters/Rail Shooters/etc)

I have too many games right now to replay anything and I'm getting more already (Metroid, and then Pokemon White)
