How the Windows 10 upgrade works (no, it won't delete your stuff)

I have a 128GB SSD that has my current OS on it(Windows 7).

I only have 29GB left.

Will there be any problems upgrading to Windows 10 using this drive in terms of storage space? I don't expect Windows 10 to ultimately take up more than I have, but if it has to download Windows 10 on top of the existing OS before initiating the upgrade, could that create an issue?

It could, but the download is only 3GB. I think I had trouble with so little space when I upgraded to Windows 8, but the filesize might be smaller now.

Since MS wants maximum update ratio, I guess it will work on reduced space too. After all, there are Win 8.1 tablets with only 16GBs and they should be able to update without jumping through hoops.

I don't understand the point of "reserving" this. Do they have a limited amount of upgrade keys or someshit? I don't want to autodownload or install this until a few months after release.

Doesn't seem like much of a point to it. I guess it will notify you or download immediately or something.

I'm guessing MS is doing this to offload some of the day 1 bandwidth ahead of time. I just don't see any benefit for me to go along with this.

Much like regular preordering, it's putting it out there now so they can make sure people will upgrade and put numbers into their quarterly reports.

Also, if you reserve it, you can wait to upgrade at any point after the one year window, since it sends it as an email.

Why doesn't MS just tie Windows to an account that let's you install it on however many machines you want but not on more than X (number of machines) at the same time?
Is it because that way they'd have to do some form of DRM so people don't run infinite offline machines?

Also even though pirated versions allow you to upgrade...you still upgrade to a pirated version. People took that news as having their pirated version upgrade to a legal version, which is not the case.

The pirated Win7/8 will upgrade to a pirated Win10. I won't enable genuine status. Traditionally Windows upgrades never did truly efficient genuine checks anyway.

Okay, this intrigues me. I've never had an illegal version of windows, so what does "upgrade to a pirated version of Win10" even mean? Does Microsoft actually have an official "pirated" version of their operating systems? Are they gimped from the legal versions in some way? That just sounds outrageous, lol.

Awesome, I plan on doing this, then. DX12, here I come! I already reserved my upgrade earlier.

I think you'll have a notification in the bottom right of your desktop. Also every so often you get a popup saying it is not genuine.

In the same boat, running fully updated Win 7 Professional and no notification. I have the related update (KB3035583) listed in my update history.

Aside from how different it looks, what's the point of upgrading? Keep in mind I know very little about computers and find that Win 7 satisfies all my needs. Thanks.

From Win 7 to 8 you'll already have faster boot times and better performance. Smaller windows file size too. Besides that it is supported by Microsoft for longer and everybody is better off just having the most recent version of software.

Yeah I accepted the upgrade but I'm still unsure. Windows 7 is literally perfect.

It isn't.

I'd like to install WIN10 on a new HD all together. Anyone know if I'll be able to do with with this "upgrade"?

Not yet known how clean installs will work.

Just got the notification on my Windows 8.1 Laptop.

I'll upgrade to it later - not on day 1 but I placed myself in reservation.

As for my Windows 7 Desktop - I'll keep it as it is.

I'm gonna be building a new PC next year and its more than likely gonna have Windows 10.

I didn't have the notification but I did windows update and it was installed right away. I'm guessing it was the very last Windows update that installed the Windows 10 thing. Why worry about the icon in the notification bar? You can simply hide it like I do with every other icon that bugs me in the taskbar settings.

Is there a way to make Win 10 look like Win 7? I like the classic desktop look, not really a fan of the new layout. Thanks.

Thanks OP.

Just a couple of questions, is there anything that i should do to prepare before upgrading, uninstall any problem programs for example?

It is probably straight forward, but i'm a bit of a worrier :( & i don't want to get half way though & something goes all wrong.

I think i will do my Games PC first as i only have games on it & i can back up all the saves onto a USB.

I agree with some other the others on here saying that this thread should be stickied.

Just got the upgrade notification in my W7 taskbar.

Is anyone here running the W10 preview and can vouch for games compatibility? Steam etc? Newer games?

Has there been any information yet on if we can get clean ISOs through the upgrade program, and if we'll also get new keys or if our current keys will be upgraded to work on 10? I definitely want the upgrade, but I don't want to do it immediately on 7/29, and I want to do a clean install rather than an in-place upgrade.

So how do you actually upgrade to Windows 10? Does it come as a regular Windows Update that you'll just have to check to install? Or do you need to go download it from Microsoft website, run it, enter your serial key and then it will upgrade?

In what sense? I use 8.1 and work exclusively from the desktop without using classic shell or anything like it. W10 does bring back an expanded start menu, though. I guess they merged the two options into one. ( On W8.1 left clicking the start button brings up metro, right clicking brings up the start menu.)

Anyone know how this upgrade would work if I want to have it install onto a new SSD? So 8.1 is on a normal HD and I would like to get 10 onto a new SSD that I'll buy when it's released.

It'll be through Windows Update.

So when this thing says I will experience problems with my display (Intel HD Graphics 4600) if I upgrade, what do y'all figure that means exactly?

I just ordered a Win 8.1 laptop.

I get the upgrade for that as well, correct? Is there going to be a conflict if I enter the same email address as I did for my desktop? Anyone with multiple devices know how this works?

I recently started using Windows 8.1 for the first time (previously on Windows 7), and I really can't stand what they've done to the interface. It seems like there are extra steps to everything, many of which involve that stupid tile screen.

It seems like they tried to create a unified touchscreen/mouse-driven OS, which serves neither function very well. I'm hoping Windows 10 addresses some of these issues.

Will this be a upgrade similar to Win 8.1 on win 8 or will it be more like downloading a ISO on an USB and upgrading it from Win 7 to Win 8?

When you install some editions of Windows (non-OEM, I think), you can actually use the OS without inputting a CD key for up to 90 days ("evaluation mode"). After that it will start nagging the user to register Windows once in a while, WinRAR-style. It will also slap "unregistered copy" on the desktop and replace the background image by a solid black color. I'm not sure if it ever stops working outright, but the nagging will become more frequent and obnoxious over time.

You could use reading the OP some more.

All programs you see there were installed before the upgrade (except the W10 ones and Visual Studio 2015 preview, of course).
