How the Windows 10 upgrade works (no, it won't delete your stuff)

Potentially a dumb quesion here. Roommate recently built a new PC, and has 32GB of RAM in it. Currently, she has Win & Home I believe, and it's only detecting half of that RAM. Will the Win10 upgrade help that in any way, or will she need to go up to Pro?

I'll upgrade if I have to, but I'd much rather do a fresh install. Hopefully they'll let us know either way soon.

Roommate must be running 7 Home, because 8 raised that limit to 128GB. While they haven't published specifics for 10, I can't imagine that they'd drop that limit down from 128GB.

I hope the option for a fresh install is there as well.

I have one of my computers I want to get Win10 on but I don't want to go through the hassle of cleaning it up.

I'll probably be formatting my PC, so I get a clean upgrade, it feels good to get rid of the garbage once in a while.

So I upgraded to 8.1 from 8 when it was first available and ran into an issue when I needed to system restore, the 8 disc doesn't work... so my only option was to reformat the hard drive. Feels like I'm going to run into this again, not sure I want to risk it.

I'll probably still end up doing a fresh install. Hopefully they give you a separate key of some sort to install Windows 10 outright, instead of having to install using my Windows 8 key and upgrading. That caused problems when I bought my SSD and fresh installed Windows 8 - it didn't like my key when I tried to upgrade to 8.1 >.>

Does anyone here have a copy of Windows 8.1 from Microsoft Dreampark? Like for free via a university program? Are you guys being able to reserve W10?

So i'm on a laptop that's eligible for the upgrade. Can I reserve the upgrade, and use it on a different machine that's running Vista?

I'm sure this is a negative, but I might as well ask anyway.

Yeah, I thought I did something wrong with my upgrade but apparently it's "by design" that you can't "refresh" the system because the Windows 8 product key isn't valid for a fresh win 8.1 installation. Incredibly ridiculous.

I have had the taskbar thing show up on my laptop but not my desktop, i have checked that i have had the Win7 update KB-3035583 as i have checked.

It's a Win7 Pro OS so would that be a reason? i don't want to miss out :(

You can now install a windows 8.1 ISO with a Windows 8 product key, at least on a fresh install. I did it last week with a copy of Win 8 bought in 2012.

From the MS support site:

If you don’t see the Get Windows 10 app on your PC, it might be because:
1.Your device isn’t up-to-date with at least Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 Update.
2.Windows Update is turned off or is not set to received updates automatically.
3.You’ve blocked or uninstalled the necessary Windows Update functionality.
4.Your device is not running genuine Windows.

Running Windows Update and installing any available updates will fix the first three issues. Need more help? Go to our Windows Community Forum.

PCs that we determine cannot run Windows 10 will not see the Get Windows 10 app before July 29, 2015. After July 29, 2015, we’ll enable the icon in the system tray. This is to help ensure that you can easily check your PC’s compatibility if you choose.

If your device is managed as part of a school or business network, please check with your IT administrator about upgrading to Windows 10.

Also, make sure that you're not running an enterprise edition (maybe if you got it through work or otherwise). If everything above seems fine, then it's possible that there is a potential compatibility issue, and you'll need to wait until July 29th and it will walk you through the process.

Sounds like if you don't see it now, you'll see it pop up on July 29th anyway.

Junior, please.
I'm interested to see what the performance is like on an in-place upgrade vs. a clean install.

If the in-place performance is not that much different, then that's going to save me a ton of time at work.

It honestly depends how bad performance is on your existing install.

Personally, with the way they are tailoring this release to be the last big bang release of Windows, and they're going to be doing continuous updates to it similar to what they do for Xbox One, I'm going to bite the bullet and do a clean install. However, for the tech preview I just did an update for now and performance is perfectly fine. You will notice a performance increase going from Win 7 -> Win 10 for sure no matter what.

The other thing which makes clean installs great is that you actually get a fair amount of space back because of random files and shit like that scattered all over the system that you don't need or forgot about.

If you'd rather not take the time to do a clean install, you'll still be happy with an upgrade for sure.

Now are these upgrade types linked to each machine? I have 2 Pros and 1 Home. Will I have the chance to switch one Pro with the Home license and vice versa?

I have an SSD which only have my Windows installation on it, then I also have a 2TB Hard Drive that has my Steam games and other stuff.

If I do a clean installation of the Technical Preview and later on the final build. Only my SSD will get wiped right? My hard drive and everything on there shouldn't be affected?
