Humble Bundle Weekly: Team 17 (lots of Worms) - Now impossible to share keys

Also is Team17 hurting for cash? They were in the last Android bundle as well and the Breed Trilogy is a Halloween sale on Steam.

If that's the case they should just make an actual Armageddon successor instead of all these four worm-limited games with crappy physics.

Checking their Wikipedia I was really surprised by the way that they employ ~75 people, seems a lot considering the quality and presumably budget of their recent output.

Nah, because I did want the BTA games for myself, and registered them. I'd feel shitty asking for one right now. I just want the keys to share like normal. I've emailed support.

I don't understand what you're emailing them about. There isn't some problem with the service, its just how they're doing it this time.

And I think I might just get the over-the-average bundle. Am interested in the 3d Worms game anyway. Going to charity, I'm not gonna be that stingy.

humble is getting worse and worse

the first "warning" was when they ditched the average and locked in a set amount and now this
I really hope people aren't going to actually get upset over this. This stuff is still DIRT cheap and its going to a good cause.

I don't often make the accusation, but I think the sense of entitlement here is ridiculous. So you cant give away stuff to friends, so what? Ask them to pitch in a $1 and buy it themselves if it was something they would actually play anyways.

I feel bad saying this, because the value of the bundles is still ridiculously good, but not being able to share Steam keys is a strange move. Will impact on sales from people who already own most of the games I'd imagine.

This is kind of bullshit. Fair, it's always said you can't give your keys away, but if I already have a game, my friends or a GAFfer should get it. It actually helps people learn about the humble thing in general.

I think this is really shitty.

This is what happens if you try to redeem a game you already have...

Can you choose which games go to your Steam account? I sometimes buy a bundle and don't want a shit game I'll never play in my library..

example: Binding of Isaac's DLC allegedly makes the game harder, I chose not to redeem if because I wanted to enjoy the vanilla game first. If they force me to have everything then I'm going to be buying way less Humble Bundles.

I tend to buy direct from the developer through Humble Payments and that shouldn't affect me, but what about 2-4 packs? I need my friend to go to humble, create an account, link his steam account, pass steam guard security...? Just to give them a serial I could have pasted in Steam chat? Pretty dumb if they do this.

I haven't redeemed mine yet, but others report that you don't have to install them all, but once you install one, all further installs are locked to that Steam account.

The humble bundle got people to be nice to strangers, help charities and gift friends while getting the game(s) you wanted.

So what happens to all the previous bundles with keys? I have maybe 40 keys I have yet to redeem in a text file somewhere. Are they all invalid now?

Edit: Thanks Seanspeed,1upmuffin and kennah

You can always just TELL your friends about it. "Hey you can get like 5 games for a $1 or 7-8 games for $5." I don't know many people that wouldn't pay attention to that.

Being able to give aware spare keys is nice, but I'm not gonna complain if I cant. I understand they would rather people purchase things themselves. You CANNOT call that greedy when its dirt cheap and is partly going to charity. There's really very little room to complain. If you want to help out, spread the word and get more people to buy it. Otherwise, just buy it if it interests you and then accept that is that.

No, those should be fine still.

No your old bundles are safe, don't worry. I think this might just be for the Team 17 bundle, not permanent, I guess we'll find out in the next couple of weeks.

Can you choose which games go to your Steam account?

Yes, you can.

It is theoretical possible to unlink your account, link another steam account and then redeem the other games there, but that would only really work if you know the others account owner personally.

I'm not too mad about all this, cause the deals are mostly still really good, it's just a little bummer cause i loved to give away the extra keys to friends...

Woah woah woah woah, they've finally put Worms Armageddon on Steam?

Is it the fully-patched version? Because I don't care what they've done to the key redemption system, I'll gladly pay for this to get easy access to the most up-to-date version of Armageddon that I can play online.

Just went back and checked mine and even ones that I hadn't "reveal the key"ed yet were fine, they didn't auto apply.

I thought this at first, but it seems a lot of work to set up the system to link to steam just to only use it with one company.

Maybe they'll give options to the developers/publishers, give out keys that people can then give to others while keeping the games for themselves or link directly to steam thus ensuring each buyer only gets one copy of the game.

It's people who bought multiple key packs then posted them one by one for sale at a profit on eBay, Craigslist, etc that caused this to happen.

Of course anyone can do that, but I'm sure a lot of company's weren't cool with that. It sucks since I've given away plenty of keys to games I owned to others, but I'm not oblivious as to why this happened.

They've been asking people to not share keys forever, I guess they finally decided to take care of it themselves. Good for them.

"Good for them"? Now I can't access and give away games I already own, many times having bought them multiple times before, because they are connecting them directly to my Steam account?? This isn't a beneficial thing for anyone else but them. Screw them.

I don't understand what you're emailing them about. There isn't some problem with the service, its just how they're doing it this time.

*Please note this bundle provides Steam keys only

and then it doesn't. I did explain that above, I think. It is my understanding that when there's a change to a system that you dislike, it's OK to speak up about it. If you want to paint that as entitlement, then whatever.

Does that mean Steam doesn't have a Facebook like API where you can reject access to linked services/games? Seems like a weird privacy concern to me. I guess Humble could come back and say "valve's ToS says you can only have one account so we're following their rules"

What impact could this have on family and friends beta sharing, if any?
The first warning was when they decided if you're a big enough publisher, you can offer Windows only DRM laden games.
Yeah. It wouldn't be impossible to imagine that sales games included in the bundles actually drop, after the bundle ends. Because the market is still flooded with easily bought and sold keys. This move might be to appease the publishers involved, but I wouldn't rule out it affecting indie developers too.

I've literally had it happen. Told a friend about it, and he ignored it, I hooked him up with a free game (Braid?) and he's bought every bundle since (well, not these new weekly ones).

The practical application is much more persuasive, I've found.

No way. Speaking up means you have some ridiculous illegitimate sense of entitlement.

How is this any different from the Keys, that included all the Games?

Because generally there would be one for BTA, and one for tier 1. So it would still be feasible to gift games you didn't want, rather than having them go to waste, which is what's happening here. I have access to copies of Superfrog HD, Worms Armageddon, Worms Pinball and a few others that I'm literally not doing anything with; nobody can use them. Previously I was able to share them. For example, I wanted to give Armageddon to a friend who I could then play online with. Can't do that now, the copy is just completely useless to me.

Most accurate post in this thread. Yea, it sucks, but I don't blame them on bit.

But if you want one Game from tier 1 and 1 Game for BTA, you still couldnt give your friend the keys with the previous model of "1 key for tier 1, 1 key for BTA".

I dont really see the problem. Besides. Its just (at least) one dollar, about 80 Eurocent for Armageddon. I would argue your friend would have the money for that...

And how many people just ignore buying it, hoping for handouts from friends?

I would imagine the amount of people aren't too dissimilar.

You can always just TELL your friends about it. "Hey you can get like 5 games for a $1 or 7-8 games for $5." I don't know many people that wouldn't pay attention to that.

But someone who might only want a game that is one of the BTA games might not want to pay 5-7 dollars for a game that will be going on a steam sale for 2 bucks eventually.

What about when a bundle down the road offers a bunch of games that you already own because of a previous humble bundle? The last humble bundle did that to me. Nearly every 'bonus' game that launched for the second week was something I already owned. At least I have the steam keys to give away to someone that might have missed the bundle that they were originally part of.

The point is that these new policies are lowering the value of the purchase for a lot of people. Having a bundle with a couple of games you already owned wasn't a major issue because you could just give it to a friend or fellow gaffer. Now you are actually being punished for buying previous bundles.

You can go on about how it's for charity, but the people buying these bundles are doing it to get the games. If everyone who bought the bundles only cared about the charity, they would just donate money directly to the charity instead of daring to ask for a bunch of games.

It's hypothetical, if I didn't want the games from tier 1 then I would be able to give them away. The point is, that choice is now unavailable. I have four games that are, essentially, in limbo.

There are a ton of other indie bundle sites out there so I'm not too worried. I don't think indiebundles, indiegala, groupees, bundlestars, flying bundle, indieroyale, and more will all switch to this.

Anyone post this yet? From Humble Bundle FAQ

Q:Why the change?
A:The new Steam key redemption process will make it even easier to quickly redeem your games on Steam! One click and the games will appear instantly in your library!
Q:How do I redeem my Steam keys?
A:When you click on a Steam key for the first time you will be walked through a process of linking your Steam account to your Humble Bundle account. Once you have completed this process you will never have to do it again! When you click on the button for your Steam key, the game will automatically be redeemed to your account with just one click!

What a silly decision. This discourages me from purchasing bundles that I have games for, simply because I can't share the extra keys.

and then it doesn't. I did explain that above, I think. It is my understanding that when there's a change to a system that you dislike, it's OK to speak up about it. If you want to paint that as entitlement, then whatever.
Yes, its ok to speak up about things you don't like, but I think its worth considering how justifiable your criticism actually is.

For instance, if you found this miraculously cheap place that sold loaves of bread for 10 cents each, you'd be pretty happy, right? But then one day, they start charging 20 cents for loaves. Its basically like getting upset over that and complaining to them, even if its still ridiculously cheaper than anywhere else. And in this situation, you're not even paying anymore than you were before. In fact, its more like if they told you, "Hey, we'll still sell you bread for 10 cents a loaf, but you cant share it. Tell your friends about us and they can get the loaves of bread for 10 cents, too." And then imagine that getting this loaf of bread didn't involve any travel for your friends, so all they had to do was make a few mouse clicks and they could have 10 cent loaves of bread, too.

Just for perspective. That's what complaining about this sounds like to me. People complaining about 20 cent loaves of bread.

I dislike how marketing-speak this is. If people were abusing the system, just say that, don't act like you're doing me a service.

On the one hand this is good because it stops people buying a bunch of bundles for very low and then trading/selling those keys on the other hand it's bad because whenever there were games in a bundle I already owned I gave the keys to friends that didn't have the game.

This is for sure. The question is will the loss of sales due to decreased value are made up for by people buying because they can no longer freeload off of others.

This is actually true, it's quite a bit more convenient, just click the button, no more copying and pasting 7 keys.

Sure. But then you might think before buying "Do I really want the games for that price?"

Besides that, whether I give them away or not, at least to me it didnt matter. I guess the Humble Bundle Guys did it especially because of some dumb people trying to sell the Steamkeys on ebay or steamtrades.
People bought like 20 or more Humble Bundles just to sell them.

I still dont see the problem. If you buy it and think its a good value for the price you pay, then there is no problem.

You can still buy a bunch of bundles as gifts, and then resell them later after the bundles are over.
