WHY THE HELL WOULD I BUY GAS IF I DIDN'T NEED IT? What am I going to do, swim in it?

Yes. There are people out there stockpiling gas in their own tanks "just in case". That's who that was directed to.

My wife is a high-school teacher in the Dallas area, and they are getting tons of kids from NO (15 new enrollees tomorrow for her alone). Several of the hotels around here are offering their rooms as temporary shelters.

I honestly wonder if New Orleans will ever come back. Water will receed, and can be irigated, buildings and homes can be rebuilt but honestly, who will want to live there? How many people who are able(financially) will decide to move away from the city altogether? And how many people who have been rendered homeless because of Katrina will opt to start over elsewhere? Hurricanes unlike lightning can, and often do strike in the same place. Who, especially after witnessing this, would live there with that overlying risk always there if they didn't have to, and could do something about it? The amount of hurricanes have been at a high point over the last few years, if that trend continues its most likey just a matter of time before another hits the area.

If it does come back, I am predicting it will be just a shell of its old self. Kinda like what happened to Galveston after the 1900 hurricane. Called the Wall Street of the South, the largest city in the state and looked to be on the verge of a world class city, when a giant hurricane hit the geographically unstable area, and most of the town was destroyed. Most of the survivors and money went to a backwater at the time town inland called Houston, and now Galveston is only seen as a sorta beach town in the Greater Houston Area.

Yes, the riverside centrolplex here in Baton Rouge is sending people from NO to Houston and dallas so we (this town) can accomidate the masses here from NO appropriately.

It's unreal how an entire town with such a large population can affect so many cities in asuch an incredible way.

I feel for all these people, trying to find new homes, family members, schools, jobs and stability.

Pretty much you have over 60k people that have had to look at dead men, women, children, and babies and leave them in the streets. Not many people are going to want to return to a nightmare. On top of that those that are left are the poorest or residents so most likely when they pack up and leave they aren't coming back. They won't have friends and family to go back to becasue they all left with them.

That's not even counting the million or so that safely left the area and the three other states that were affected by this storm.

Pardon my language, but this is utterly fucking insane.

You're excused.

The few minutes of footage for BBC World alone were shocking, and the people being interviewed were as uncompromising as you could imagine. They talked explicity about their city's babies and children being raped, the fear of leaving police officers for fear of being murdered, a total lack of food, water and life-saving medication in the Louisiana Superdome, about the dead being left in plain view by those who may join them in the Superdome, about the apparent lack of help authorities are promising will be coming. Why should anyone be surprised when Big Easy residents or any other Americans demand the mighty to fall with their city to the depths?

Anderson Cooper just shat on Sen. Mary Landreau.

She is thanking all these other politicians, and then Anderson goes,

"I didn't hear that, because I have been loooking at dead bodies for 3 days, and to hear politicians thanking each other just kinda rubs alot of people the wrong way"... and he has been ripping into her for the past 5 mins, and she keeps thanking people and ignoring him.

HOLY SHIT!!!

ANDERSON COOPER IS TEARING THE SENATOR OF LA A NEW ASSHOLE!!

Man I hope someone got a vid of that. It was totally awesome.

Basically the senator was patting all of her fellow government people on the back for how well they were doing their jobs and Cooper went off on her. He was like "Are you kidding me? People are dying in the streets and all you are doing is patting each other on the back? I just saw a woman's body being eaten by rats. People are pissed off. Where do you get off?"

The news reporting on NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN or whatever are hours behind the local news here, so if I said anything regarding the news that pissed someone off, I do appologize. I'm only just now finding out about this news delay.

BTW: 38,000 troops National Guard deployed to NO for help, other states are pledging Nation guard help as we speak.

Thank god, seriously both major sites in NO are totally surrounded by water and need helicopters to transport people to busses to send to safe keeping.

My english sucks.

Helicopters haven't stopped flying over on the wat to NO for days, it's non stop.
Every school anywhere close here is closed for at least another week as the school buses are used to transport people from the dome and such to safer ereas.

BR is too full, and taking too much a role in the securing of NO population, and is feeling the effects. State and federdal officiols say BR must let go of some of the NO population before it gets out of hand. (which in a way shit started today)

Landrew & Blanco are cunts, total snobs that are in a panic with no plans.

basicly everyone here knew not long after she was voted in as gov that Blanco would never be elected for anything here again.

Good. And if someone has video of these Anderson Cooper segments, please share.

I dont think NO will EVER bounce back to what it was, the only people I see ever trying to live there are the poor souls buying property to live because it'll be cheap as fuck. :(

It's all over the news locally how big money guys in NO are buying up top commercial property here in Baton rouge.

I think the people with money have no plans at this time to rebuild NO, hopefully so, I hate to see anything like this happen again, anywhere to anyone.

Indeed, it was the first thing I thought of.

this is probably premature, but i was talking to someone at work about it so i'll bring it up here: What do you think is going to happen to the sports teams in NO? The Saints might as well move since its doubtful they'll play any games at the superdome this season. The city is going to have enough struggle to get back economically as it is, let alone supporting NFL and NBA teams.

I think an interesting change of topic, but not too far a change in topic is the debate of whether NO should be rebuild, or dried out for the poeple who lived there to gather belongings then let the levee open to just allow NO to remian under water for good.

I mean it's a bad plan to try to support a city that's surrounded by high water on all sides, esp with the hurricane seasons we have here at times.

There is plenty of high land to build upon rather than try only to fail at this again.
I just can't see how this will never happen again, it's unstable.

And just realize folks, the CNN folks are there - sleeping in satellite trucks and eating whatever they can get just like other folks. They are choked up because they are in it - they are living it just like everyone else and they can't just pack up and come home, they are stuck there just like everybody else - living the same shitty nightmare and I've seen stuff that they've sent back and what I've seen is just stupifying. I mean this is like the end of civilization in the affected areas. Many of these politicians need to get INTO the affected areas and provide solid civilian leadership to the groups of people there.

A civilian city leader and a detachment of guard soldiers needs to go to each of these major areas where we all know there are people and manage that situation. Help the people where they are. You sure as hell can't expect them to leave places of relative safety to head to other areas of the city. I mean shit its not like we're dropping radios to people to tell them what to do like we do anywhere else. These people need help and they need it now. You don't have time to get together in the oval office. You need to get to the people where they are - stop acting like they can get to you. I have yet to see a single god damned politician in the area trying to help the people and get them doing what they need to do. The people need leaders - NOW. Fuck everything else. Shit how long did it take for Bush to get to New York after 9/11. How long did it take for them to approve funding for rebuilding and to attack Afghanistan. Where the hell is their higher sensibilities now!

We have fucking dead people rotting in the streets you sons of bitches - get your asses from Washington DC and take your damn aids and get to the people. Open YOUR homes to refugees! Fuck I am so pissed off now I am just trembling. Convert all the millitary bases which you were about to close into shelters. Shit its not fucking rocket science.... you HAVE places where you can send people. You don't need to pack people into the Astrodome - you HAVE places where you can send people, and heaven forbid it will actually help all the communities that were preparing for collapse. Fuck if you can't deal with getting a plan together what the fuck are you there for!

There has been talk about it maybe them playing in BR or San Antonio or the Astrodome (doubtful) or the way far off chance of them playing in LA. I don't think it's premature in the sense that the NFL is a business and they have to think about everything that is invested in that team and that market.

At this point everything is up in the air, but I can see some city getting a pro-football team for "free" for at least this season.

PS - Phoenix for President 2008.

Well, it probably acclerated the Saints going to LA, and I doubt the hornets will stay too much longer.

I'm guessing the Saints will play at Tiger Stadium in LSU, allthough Tagliabu hasn't stated where yet.
Tiger Stadium can hold 115,000 people, it's 65 miles from NO, it's now the largest city in louisiana and holds probably the most NO residents now.

The NFL would get blasted by EVERYONE if they let the Saints move now. If they moved before this, then ok but it would be a slap in the face to the whole state. The Saints need to stay to help bring money and tourism to the area. Don't forget the Super Bowl is held there every 3-4 years.

Oh yea, the NFL donated 1 Million already and the Saints players are donating money too.

I think the NBA is doing the same.

I honestly think the Saints should go to Baton Rouge and use the LSU field. It's a very large stadium and shouldn't interfere with the LSU games. It seems like the most viable in-state stadium at this point.

What the fuck. Who cares!

There's going to be a huge politcal fallout from this mess. There won't be enough people to blame. Can't wait to see it unfold, heh....

Blasted by whom, The emenies of common sense?
Where are they going to play in LA?

Tourism? Who in the fuck is going to visit NO in the next 365 days? They will just be getting some of the business back in place this time next year let alone housing.

The superbowl is out of the question, the Superdome is like a murder house. No one is going to want to get jolly in the superdome anymore it is now a human tomb.

On the way home from work, they were talking about the Saints probably going to SA for this season. They are scheduled to visit SA tomorrow IIRC.

I know people from my gym here in Florida that were so happy, because they're in the Coast Guard who fly in the helicopter rescuing people in trouble. I wish I can do that. :(

AWESOME FUCKING NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Feds approved foods stamps for all refugees, and unemployment will be made available to all as well.

That is exceptionally good news. I wonder if the process will be cleared of red tape and bullshit, I'm sure Phoenix will find out soon enough.

Has this been posted? CNN's before & after:

EDIT: Great news, DJ Sl4m.

That's awesome news?

If all these people die of dehydration cuz they can't evacuate them out soon enough, then what good will food stamps do?

The local news is far away faster to report anything on the major networks.

They have Bobby Jindal in thier corner helping with news and announcments.

Climb 1 mountain at a time, those people are still on step 2, get out of NO.

For the poeple who have been evacuated, it's awesome, and I'm excited as hell for them right now.

In fact, the next coors is for them :)

When you have to stay put, and wonder how/when/where you can live, this gives them hope and a bit more freedom.

They deserve this and much more.

BTW: I agree Jindal is probably the only honest polition here, and he should be the Gov, and would be if it weren't for the racists.

Actually this was a big topic on Fox Sports Radio last night. They were going to build the Saints a new stadium anyway. The owner was a cheap ass but if he doesn't build a new place now, he'll get lynched.

Anyone watching CNN? They interviewed a NO Hospital worker. She said the sniper situation finally cleared up. So they walk down 9 flights of stairs and loaded up thier patients onto boats (some with spinal injuries and other serious medical conditions). They drive the boat to higher ground at the waypoint .. and the TRANSPORTATION wasn't there. So they had to turn back around to the hospital because it was too unsafe to stay out in the open.

Wow.

During this long wait, she says at least one patient has died ... and others are getting worse.

The CNN inquiry continues: Paula Zahn asks an official how on earth it is possible that at least hundreds have not been fed in the last hundred hours since Katrina struck. FEMA Director responds about Superdome situation: we just learned today. "Those people have suddenly appeared."

Paula Zahn: "You had no idea?" She sounded livid, but calmed down later.

Also: "Is it fair to blame the victims" who were unable to leave the city for lack of public assistance?

It's interesting to see the changes in coverage before and after landfall, seeing how the correspondents are reacting to answers they would not have batted an eye to in the past.

You do realize there is over a million refugees who have left the city who now have nothing, homes, jobs, security...anything.

Its good news for them.

Man this is just unbelievable...I think one of the unintended consquences of this disaster is that people's faith in the government and the "might" of the US has been completely shattered...at least it has for me.

If we can't even save babies from dehydration, what is the point of everything else?

LOL, no assistance ? Yeah right, such BS.
The only ones who couldn't evacute are the elderly/sick or handicapped.

They were ordered to leave, and had many city buses shuttling people to the dome for 2 days.

The healthy people who decided to stay with intentions to loot, deserve thier ill chosen fate IMO.

Not all the ones who remained are 'victims' of the storm, many are victims of thier own greed and failed plan.

On the ORLY? Show, they showed a dead man on one of the highways. I think Sheppard Smith is doing a great covering the story.

This is horrible. There's NO way I could stay in crowd that massive and wait for help. I'd pack up my stuff and find a way out of the city.
