Well fuck, if I am going to return it I would at least like to meet the guy in person and get whatever "thank you" there is to be had. If I have to do it anonymously and/or expose myself to some sort of legal trouble.....shit, it's just aggravating and makes for a harder decision =\

There's an ATM/Teller receipt folded up inside that shows a fairly recent large cash withdrawl, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't a case of dropping a bunch of money on the way to the bank. It was late last night so I'm assuming the dude was just out and about. Probably too young to have a bunch of starving kids or a mortgage payment.

in what context would a young person carry around $600 in cash? he was probably on the way to buy loads of drugs.

not that this would have any real bearing on your decision. really the entire question of whether he's rich or poor or needs the money or doesn't seems irrelevant. or at least unresolvable. if there's any plausible situation in which you wouldn't be able to live with keeping the money, then you should return it. at root it's a question of whether you put your desires ahead of a distant person's potential needs. in a way, i wouldn't want to be in your position. i don't know what i'd do.

if you give it to the police, you're definitely not going to be doing it anonymously. for what it's worth, if it were me, i would definitely try to thank the person, even if they went through the authorities to get it back to me.

also, i have had someone contact me directly to give something i lost back to me (atm card). i'd already cancelled the thing, but i ended up meeting them to take it back, so i could thank them and destroy it myself. it was a little different though because we were both students.

I've carried around hundreds of dollars in my wallet before. Because of necessary circumstance. Not stupidity. I'm sure that's the same with this guy.

The answer is simple

-Buy as many hookers/strippers as possible with the money.
-Send them over to the house with his wallet.

Like what? I'm not being a prick (well, I guess I am being a prick, what with suggesting stealing hundreds of dollars and all), but I'm just curious. Why would you need to carry hundreds of dollars with you, in lieu of just writing a check or using a debit/credit card?

Man give it back to him with all the money. This poor guy is probably going nuts looking for his wallet not knowing where he lost it. His whole apartment has probably been turned inside out while he is searchin for it and im sure he has been retracing his steps over and over trying to rememeber where he has been calling any stores he has been to to see if they found it etc.... Seriously I go frantic searching when i just misplace my keys imagine this guy losing a wallet with $600 in it and having no idea where he lost it? He will be so thankful and relieved he is sure to give you a reward and if he doesnt then so be it of least you did the right thing.

Well you folks have at least helped me think up one other option:

Anti-Asshole Insurance : remove some portion of the money from the wallet (whatever you consider a fair reward), then mail the rest back to the owner's address. Guaranteed reward, guy gets 70-80% of his money back, along with all important IDs.

For the record, I would indeed feel pretty shitty if I were in his shoes. But then again, I wouldn't carry $600 on me and I wouldn't really expect to get it back.

WTF makes you think you deserve a reward, let alone get one "guaranteed". YOu aren't entitled to shit just for doing something that you are SUPPOSED to do anyway. No offense, but you sound like an a-hole that you even have to think about this. Just give the dude his money back.

Hmm. I don't know.

If I really wanted to be an ass, the worst thing I'd do is take the $600, leave everything else in there untouched and then take the wallet somewhere and report it as stolen. I'd like to think I'm better than that, though. If I wanted to be my true self I would leave everything alone and report it as stolen. I mean, I'd be irate if I knew someone took money from my wallet. So who am I to do it to someone else? At the end of the day, it's just not my nature.

Give it back to him..christ what are you thinking? The poor guy is probably heart broken about losing that much cash. Nobody knows why he had that much cash on him but its ridiculous to try justify taking it because you shouldn't carry that much cash on you..I've carried that much cash on a few rare ocassions.

If you take the money your just another scumbag thief and no matter what your justification is..your still a low-life prick.

if someone were to leave their keys in their car and the engine running, thats a pretty stupid thing to do too, but i doubt anyone here would see that as a reason to steal their auto.

In my opinion...

Please return it.

What if he's extremely poor and those are his life savings?
It's not even about karma. It's just being a good human being.

Yes, there is always the chance that he's a drug dealer or something. but i think that's kind of an excuse to justify the greed.

not to say you're like that, but i'm just saying - that's what i would do.

If you do keep it, I hope you loose a large sum of cash someday, so some fucktard can decide to keep your hard earned cash.

I don't have time to read this whole thread but my advice is to contact the guy and return all the money. I know if we were all in that situation with a lost wallet full of cash we would hope against hope that someone would return it in full. You'll be doing a good deed in a world that's filled with far too many selfish assholes.

Chances are the guy will probably reward you in some way anyway so you'll likely wind up with good feeling, a decent reward for your trouble, and a great story to tell.

The other day I went to lunch with this girl. She's complaining about not being able to close her purse, I watch her struggle a bit, then offer to help. She had a wad of cash as thick as a deck of cards in this little thing! I'm thinking to myself, what kind of girl needs all this cash? Apparently, it was her first & last month's rent.

Now, probably would have been better to get a cheque, or money order, or something like that (especially since she works at a bank) but some people like to keep things simple... and/or just aren't very bright(which she wasn't --but oh so good looking).

Return the wallet, but throw an extra $200 into it. See if he says anything/Gives you a $200 reward. Turn this into a test of his honesty. If he passes the test, you know you did the right thing. He fails, you make his life miserable using the photocopies of ID you made before returning the wallet. You realize there is no right or wrong, only winners and losers.

Return it to him personally just as you found it. He should be so grateful to you that it'll probably make you feel wonderful. I know I would.

What kind of person carries around $600?
Dumbasses on occasion, sure, but how about those who can't get a bank account? That shit happens. May not have been this case, but that doesn't matter. Don't go spitting the whole "let them learn the hard-way about the magical technology I'm such a smart-ass about."
Who knows why he dropped it, or why he took out $600 cash?
Don't fucking matter in my book.

A large percentage of you are completely fucked up. And don't give me that "la de da, I admitted I'm a bad person, whoopa doo."
Fuckin' infuriating if you ask me.

Let there be no doubt though, at least you people confessing that you're bad people doing bad things are admitting it. And that's worth something, I guess.

I've carried that much cash with me, but only near the first of the month as I get ready to pay the rent. However, that bit me in the ASS last September as I lost my rent payment (Money Order) in an accident. Talk about money down the drain... and a lot of it.

:lol

Back to the bank I went to withdrawal more of my life.

There's no question I would return the money.

It's all about the golden rule, and no doubt one of my inclinations would be to think about how I'd feel if I lost my wallet with that kind of cash in it (and how appreciative I'd be if it were returned to me).

IMO, the fact that there's only cash and ID in the wallet suggests the guy isn't well off and that he maybe can't afford to lose the money. It suggests to me he's a guy with limited means -- he's young, he's got no credit. Hell, it's Oct. 31 -- could the $600 be Nov. 1 rent?

Add to that, I don't think any of the justifications in the original post pass muster.

there are lots of reasons to carry around cash besides drugs...
may be he was going to entertain guests? not all restaurants accept credit cards.
buy something from someone who would only accept cash.
rent is another good reason. loads of times rent is paid in cash.

I can't believe you even seriously thought about keeping it. I mean sure it's a nice chunck of cash, but you have NO IDEA what that guy had it for. He may have needed it to pay for a bill, or to lend to a friend that really need it, or any one of a million other possible reasons.

Simple question is, how would you feel if you lost $600? You'd feel shitty.

How would you feel if someone brought it back to you? You'd feel awesome.

Thinking of keeping it is fun and all for a fantasy, but is mean in reality. Sure the guy has already given up on ever seeing his cash, but you have the opportunity to make his day.

Do it.

Paying the rent? Checks. Spending $600 on food at a restaurant? Credit or debit cards, especially one where you would have to spend $600. Can't get a checking account? Bounced too many checks buying materials to make methanphetamines. Loaning it to a friend? Keep it, because he'll never see it again anyway. Buying something from someone who will only take cash? DRUGS. ;)

No matter what his reason, he's still a moron. You don't carry around that much money and OOPSY I dropped it. Get's what he deserves. What if it happened to me? It would never happen to me, because I'm not that clueless when it comes to money.

The longer you keep it, the less likely you're really gonna give it back...
...it's too bad. If it was me, I would've either returned it or handed it over to authorities right away.
If I had found that money on it's own - no wallet...then I might consider keeping it. But the fact that you 'know' who the owner is (from the ID) and still consider keeping it is pretty bad.

Where did you find it anyway?

I don't have a problem with those saying that they'd keep it and realize it's wrong.
It's the people that try to justify it with "oh he was probably gonna buy drugz!" who are pretty pathetic.

Was watching a NY1 story on New York vs Tokyo subway systems and the Japanese always seem to return stuff they find. I wish people were more courteous here. :(

Plus their trains come on time and they give you a late card if their trains are late. :D

The drug thing was tongue in cheek, although probably accurate. The real justification is punishing the stupid. There is righteousness behind my evilness and duplicity. Two wrongs make a right, as the old saying goes. Or maybe it's don't make a right, who knows.

Besides, the guy is probably a child molester who was going to use the money to buy kiddy porn.
