I am so tired of the whole 30 fps this 60fps that discussion. You all lost the sight on what really matters and it's ruining console gaming

If You still can't deal with that... just please, get a pc and enjoy your passion there.
I understand people getting frustrated however this quote sum up entirely my thoughts on the matter, because personally I have the "chance' to not be bothered at all by 30 fps and I clearly see the difference (and I don't play MP).
Good luck to 60fps folks.

I really like 60 fps and always choose the performance/frame rate mode unless I'm just wandering round after I've completed the game.

Unfortunately 30 fps gives devs a huge amount of more rendering time in ms. As enhancements and effects improve, the time required to put them in the frame does as well.

I'm fully expecting Naughty Dogs next game to be 30fps and Hellblade II etc. We had this discussion with requiem and people complained. They did a 60fps patch and the result?

A Plague Tale: Requiem now has a 60fps option - so what's the catch?

Resolution, fidelity and animation take a hit - but the performance upgrade is solid.

Personally if I look at something like Valhalla I'm happy with that level of fidelity for a 60 fps trade in an open world. Like I don't think what I saw of mirage with the denser cities and poly count was worth the cost of those 30 fps.

And I'm happy with how re2 remake looks for 60fps for smaller, more linear games so I dunno.

I get what you're saying, but the genie is out of the bottle now. I love me 60fps, I don't think 30fps is unplayable. Most games before PS5/Series, on console, were 30fps.

Moving from 60 to 30, then back to 60 is probably the thing that would be jarring. I think jumping from a 60fps game, then switching over to a 30fps game is probably when you see and feel the most different. If you stick to the 30fps mode most of the time, you'd probably never even care.

The answer is simple: console players from the 360 generation had no clue what 60 fps in a shooter or action game even looked like. There were no streamers or you could not stream at a higher frame rate. Youtube did not support 60 fps until well into the ps4/xbo era. If you're dating a 98 pound girl and then later you start going out with one who weighs 150 youre going to notice some differences.

Yup, this is totally unrelated to consoles.

TLDR : someone save us from the curse of shit TVs.
I’m convinced of this, too. The problem isn’t 30 fps in itself. Millions played Dark Souls on 720p TVs that were rarely bigger than 42”. It never looked choppy. Zelda TOTK looks and moves much better on a 720p screen, too. The real problems are:
1) if the game’s resolution is lower than the TV’s, upscaling artifacts look terrible in motion;
2) the bigger the screen, the worse the blur and the stuttering looks and the more fatiguing it is. People also tend to sit too close to huge screens. We used to sit 2+ meters away from 21” TVs;
3) eyesight in the general population has declined quickly, and poor vision makes bad motion look even worse.

But I hope your end-all, be-all solution isn’t OLED. OLED just makes 30fps look even worse.

I can enjoy games and still think the shitty framerate is, in fact, shitty.

See: Nintendo Switch. Or just Nintendo in general.

Yeah... Because of all of this, I don't want to move away from my 1080p 32 inch LED TV. I already know that going bigger, going 4K and going OLED will lead to a poorer experience for anything that is not 4K, and is 30fps.

CRTs, in the way they dealt with the signal, were much more versatile and had a consistent quality and output, even if you threw at them 320x240 or 256x224 or 640x480. It was the beauty of this technology, along with the crystal clear movement. Excellent brightness, and in progressive mode, the picture was really soft for the eyes.

To OP's point: Tears of the Kingdom is running at 30FPS for the most part and it dips considerably during action times. That hasn't stopped me from considering this game on of the greatest games of all time and I love higher framerates. It's not the end of the world if you get some hiccups, as long as it is consistent, I think it's fine. Most of the time TOTK is consistent 30 and that's great in my opinion.
The 30fps in TOTK I would say feels great due to the rather low input lag, but there are some games with a heavy post processing pipeline that make the 30fps experience feel genuinely awful for the end user. I don't like to critique Killzone 2 since it's one of my favorite shooters ever, but going from KZ2 to KZ3 felt like such an improvement due to lowered input lag which made the controls feel so much more responsive.

30fps with smooth framepacing and low input latency is totally fine, end of story.

I say this as a PC gamer. Last time I had to lock it was when using emulation to run TOTK. Locked at 30 with smooth pacing, totally fine.

I prefer impressive simulation over visuals anyway, if that means a 30fps cap on consoles and high system specs for PC, so be it.

Games feeling better thanks to faster refresh rates is a beautiful thing.

Sure we enjoyed games years ago that were 30fps. We enjoyed games with severe pop in, shitty anti aliasing, and pixelated graphics too.

Wanna play games like that in 2023?

It’s like anything else. You get a taste of just how amazing gaming can feel, why the hell would anyone want to go back? Money isn’t unlimited so I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t want to spend their hard earned dough on a substandard experience, after they’ve had better.

What’s the best “feeling” game you’ve ever played on console?

We have accepted that Devs can't make fun ideas for games anymore.

So we settled on 60fps because atleaast that way a normal shoot/swing feedback feels nice. And it probably requires more tech insight than artistic insight by a dev.

It's current gen games that have the option for 60 fps in some of the best looking games so far.

*Puts on tin foil hat*

I'm starting to think it just Pc users just want to keep console at 30 fps, so they feel more justifed in their big ticket purchase.

I played 3rd party games on my PS3 and enjoyed them so I really don't care about high frame rates :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I will often lock my fps to 30 on my high end PC because my gfx card coil whines like a bitch.

Everyone knows that real gamers only play on a black and white tv with mono speakers.

Wasting development time on colors and stereo sound has ruined gaming!

How about 40? If you can't do 60 then 40 is a great compromise as 40 feels much more fluid than 30. I think they should aim for that minimum. 30 is just too less. And i dont understand about cpu bottleneck, its a Zen 2 cpu, they are still fairly powerful cpu so how is it possible cpu bottleneck when there consoles are still new? I don't believe the cpu bottleneck conspiracy.

The games that are associated with having a blast are at least 60 FPS since the N64 days.

Unfortunately, 30 fps games are the treadmill of people that move from one release to the next.

I don't chase fancy ray traced lighting at 4k. I don't chase the best textures ever made or the most realistic graphics.

The one thing I do prefer is 60fps, and I absolutely don't enjoy the experience as much when I am staring at something choppy. My last two purchases were Elden Ring and RE4R, and not being able to run those at locked 60 because of my aged CPU does impact my experience. Does it make the game less fun? Actually, yes. Not enough to stop playing, but it's undeniable true.

Ignorance is bliss and all that. I'm sure if I never moved away from 30fps I wouldn't know any better. But I do know better, and I personally don't want to accept any less.

When I'm looking at a screen, it's a visual experience. At a certain point it's ridiculous for people to feel justified in going on about resolution and effects but go back to ignoring the motion resolution. These aren't pictures, this is interactive video and fake motion blur on top of our own human motion blur doesn't cut it.

Of course 60fps is preferred, feels better and looks better especially for certain genres, but 30fps is never a deal breaker for me. The entire, no 60fps no buy argument is crazy to me though because some of the best games of all time were 30fps or below. It’s a double edge sword sometimes though. Framerate mode can results in slightly better than PS4 graphics imo while 30fps usually gives you better visual fidelity closer to current generation, but it’s not as smooth or sometimes not as responsive.

When was the last time you played a 3rd person action / adventure game at 30fps? Starfield has a first person mode too, its gonna feel janky AF playing it like that.

Not to mention we've had tv's that run at 120hz and VRR for years now and NextGen consoles that were supposed to do 60fps @ upscaled 4K and 120 @ 1440.

30fps is absolutely unacceptable in 2024.
Zelda TotK and it plays pretty smooth on my OLED with a few dips here and there.

30fps is trash. Standards change. It’s absolutely horrible to go from playing 99% of games in 60fps then going to the outlier that is 30fps. I skipped A Plague Tale Requiem and I’ll be more than happy to skip Starfield too. The fact they don’t even have a toggle for people that want to play it unlocked is just sad.

At the end of PS3 gen i said "fuck this shit, I'm going pc" and only played in 60 fps for many years, only bought PS4 for some exclusives and forced myself to play them in 30. This gen started amazingly with most games having 60fps options, it's slowly getting worse.. that's why I invested in upgrading my gaming PC once more.

Fuck 30fps, 40fps is quite ok but most devs don't give a shit.

You lost sight of what really matters, which is getting a fucking nice PC and enjoying life, good games AND good performances.
