Since taking over from Mattrick over the last couple of years I'm down for this ride.
Today with the news I thought I'd never here with Live being opened up to cross play to all platforms.

And after listing to his Keynote on Xbox One following the iPad style model with new iterations releasing more regularly and full forwards compatibility so you never lose your library.

I'm not meaning to gush but it's clear there has been a change at Xbox with him, well done Phil.

I hope this thread is taken in the light hearted / a little tongue in cheek way its intended
I believe in him too. Thats why I bought One. And today he gave me another reason not to regret my decision.

This. Fable legends was crap for as long as it was in development. I don't care where you work, if you guys don't remain profitable you wont be working there for long.

This.

I like Phil, definitely better than Mattrick, but the circumstances of this gen makes him do some "bad-buzz" announcements. While Mattrick was just doing shitty decisions.

edit: I just would like him to put 343/Coalition/Turn10 on other Ips too, the acquisition of the Gears IP was the thing I was the most disappointed about (turning Black Tusk Studios into a Gears factory)

well, on fable legends i think he made the right decision, i mean about the game itself. But i hope the best for lionhead's employees.

Phil is a very nice J Allard with a big smile

but J had the drive

the ferocity

J was a lion

EDIT: dont mention zune

I like Phil and he seems like a down-to-earth guy, but personally he and his team haven't done a lot to make me feel great about my Xbox One purchase. As someone who owns all three of the major consoles and a gaming PC, the recent Xbox announcements have made me wonder where the Xbox One fits into my gaming life. Granted, a lot of the announcements are probably part of a larger plan pushed by the higher-ups at Microsoft, but I'm sure the Xbox team has at least some say in these matters.

Funny how one announcement makes so many threads and comments about MS in a "better light" when the last two weeks it's been all doom and gloom. I look forward to the spectacle that will be the rest of GDC and //build/. LOL.

On Topic: I think Phil is doing a good job.

Yea pretty much.

And even if Spencer is the "leader" right now for the Xbox brand...

I don't think he is in control enough to steer the ship one way or the another. He was able to steer it away from Mattrick's plans, but that's the most he will be able to do.

The Microsoft culture is going to be tough to break. I don't think they will be able to reinvent themselves too much honestly.

The new UWA store and the risks it provides are too great to ignore and are more consistent with classic Microsoft walled-garden policies, and that will be Xbox connected if it isn't already.

If you say the name Spencer fast enough, it becomes another word, revealing its true nature.

Let me illustrate.

Spencer
Spancer
Sancer
Sancear
Sancar
Santa
Jesus

See? :)

Probably.
The game was well on its way.

It was announced in Aug 2013 and since then became a f2p game. Development started in 2012

Nearly finished? Yes. But it's been around 4 years of MS investing in a AAA studio to create a f2p game. I can understand MS cancelling the game, shame they shut lionhead down though; I would have killed for a proper new Fable.

Hilarious.
Yes, Spencer went home early that one afternoon when they came up with the original Xbone game ownership removal system, and he wasn't informed about it until the day of the 180, which was his decision.

Why sing his praises? What new game has been announced? What new partnerships have been revealed? What new studios have been opened?

This past week has been almost pure PR from Microsoft with very little being accomplished. They're taking Xbox One games multiplatform. They've closed studios and shuttered games. They've declared they'll do cross-play which is something the other platform holders have done for a while. It's really remarkable when threads with new PC/WiiU/PS4 games and new game info and new info about NX are dropping off the first page in favor of threads about the Xbox/PC ecosystem and now cross-platform multiplayer.

Phil is a "good guy" because he's not as bad as Mattrick? He's a good guy because he's gradually correcting some terrible mistakes from the past?

My standard is not that low.

"I see it sometimes on Twitter and other places, where people want to call me out as somebody who was at the leadership table when decisions were made for Xbox One, and that's absolutely true.

"I've never tried to wash my hands or distance myself from my role on the Xbox One leadership team through the announcement of the console, E3 2013 - I was there, and I'm not trying to create some kind of false history that makes me look better, to say I wasn't there, I wasn't involved. I'm going to take responsibility for those decisions, absolutely, good ones and bad ones. I have to, otherwise I don't have any credibility in what I do going forward.

"I wouldn't trust me if all of a sudden I tried to say 'well, I was asleep during those meetings'. It would be silly. I was there."

I dont get why theres a defence force or riot about his positioning

but alas mistakes are made

Lets replace Phil (as head of Xbox) with Xbox, they have been incredibly supporting to its community, have a vision that I can get on board with and this news today is HUGE finally opening the door to its network to all platforms in clear announced way. Todays Xbox team seem to be innovating and changing with people and the business, and taking bets on a vision and making the gamble as they aren't in a position to accept the status quo.

I think todays news only highlights this, hence this thread.

Sounds like official MS PR.

Yep. Cross-play is as of yet the *only* positive move Xbox has made since Spencer has been in charge. You don't get a sticker for fixing mistakes that shouldn't have happened in the first place. Everything else about the XB1 has either been totally wrong or a move attempting to right said wrongs.

so he helped kill the awful plans for xbox one drm
he seems to be increasing microsoft's support for PC which they have been neglecting for some time now (jury's out on this one)
and today he has announced the end of their terrible policy about cross-platform play

obviously these are good things, but i'll give him props when he doesn't simply fix a prior screwup that he was involved in

cmon you like him

How on earth is my comment a "defence force". It applies to every person that people choose to fixate on as the be all of their beloved platform or game, when it is almost always not the case that they are responsible for everything. It is irrespective of platform, game, film, company etc

This.

I had a dream that Phil attended my sweet sixteen birthday. He brought this amazing gift and we sat in my room and opened it, but just as I began to open it, he told me close my eyes and to just feel what was inside the box...

After much fiddling, I got into the box and to feel around... There was a faint bubblegum scent in the air and Phil's voice had changed from upbeat to more gruff and grunty...

Yeah, get right in there...he grunted... It was soft and wet, I kept poking around until I found a small crevice or hole...that's it Miles he moaned, your gift is just inside... Slide a finger in and see what it is..

I think Phil Spencer says what people want to hear. It's obvious he's under a lot of pressure from higher ups at Microsoft to make Xbox profitable and to integrate with the Windows platform. When he took over MGS the whole thing kind of went to pot with first-party innovate thrown to the wayside for yearly franchises. A lot of people blame that on Mattrick but that's revisionist history.

People like him because he comes off like a nice guy but I've not seen him do much for the platform that was not super-obvious (lower price, unbundle Kinect). He still keeps toxic people like Yusuf Mehdi and Aaron Greenberg as lieutenants which kind of nullifies his nice guy superficial image.

The latest messaging is as unclear and convoluted as pre-launch in 2013. Yearly console updates is not a good idea, and Microsoft would not even consider this if Xbox One was not behind in the hardware department. Hopefully GDC and E3 will provide from clarity but at this point I'm not sure if Spencer and crew have it figured out.

MS didnt really change their plans, they simply shifted them over to Win10.

I can see why you like Phil. It seems you speak in PR, too.

Let's aim for released.
Didn't want to set the bar impossibly high. Let's settle for "announced" right now.

cmon you like him
Not fond of PR heads unless they're entertaining. At least folks like Shu or Iwata have/had a presence. Phil drips snake oil.

Not saying you're the defence force, im agreeing with you, im saying I dont get why people are rushing to defend a businessman on something he outright said is his responsiblity.

At first, i wasn't sure if Phil Spencer was the guy to make Xbox great again. I actually laughed and cringed at the taught of believing in Phil Spencer but honestly, i think i'm starting to see the light.

The guy really is the savior of gaming and of course Xbox. He's been there for what ? 2 years and look what changed, it's crazy.

Now, with him as the president of Xbox, many things changed for the best. Backward compatibility, no Kinect, no paywall for Netflix ( thank god ), brought Games with Gold, brought the fans together to believe in the Xbox/Windows ecosystem, now cross network, read carefully not cross platform but cross network, this is HUGE !

I mean the guy's awesome. Not only he looks great, also very ripped, he's the guy the Xbox division's been waiting for. The days of Mattrick are over. It's time for true gaming to shine through Phil Spencer.

Now Sony, the ball is in your court. Yeah ok you've maybe got Shawn Layden but he never looked as good as Phil Spencer.

I think he's an alright guy, but he's still a corporate mouthpiece. I mean, it's his job. And Microsoft still has a lot of shit to fix before I'll consider buying anything else on their store in order for today's cross-play announcement to even affect me.

Precisely. Microsoft continues to abuse its dominant OS market share to the detriment of us all.
The reason they had to do the Xbone 180 was their lack of market share, not because they saw the error of their ways and suddenly became the good guys.
