Killzone 1 (sorry, no gifs found, but it looked slightly around the level of Half-Life 1 on PS2, which honestly isn't that bad for a PS2 game).

Went from a game on PS2 that people would have simply called a Halo or Half-Life derivative/copy, to something that almost felt like playing a CGI war movie.

It was the biggest *gasp* moment during the PS3 reveal.

I've seen the evidence presented ITT and I don't see how anyone can pick anything but GTA. It was a major jump inpretty much every way imaginable.
People here are comparing from one generation to half of another. Or between extremes. Or several years of difference. But I'll give you my personal case. I was playing this (beautiful) game in 1995:

And shortly after I was knee deep into this one:

No jump will ever be the same. When I hear how "transformative" RT is nowadays I can't help but to…

100% agree. The jump from 2D to 3D, no matter which example you're giving really, is a fundamental paradigm shift. Everything else is just iterative improvements. It's a tier above everything that is never going to be beaten and there's no way round that until someone invents another dimension.

One of the most interesting choices because it was early attempt at 3D in a primarily 2D era. If you disqualify 2D to 3D jumps on the grounds of fairness this might well take the top spot.

I don't know why an indie developer hasn't come along and made a game with prerendered backrounds like RE. You could probably make something that looks close to photorealism. Tank controls feel dumb at first but once you get a hang of the controls it's actually a lot of fun.

Killzone 2's aesthetic is really unique tbh.

To be clear I was being a bit cheeky - but fact is in 1986, the game I posted screenshots from was basically a proto GTA - large open world cities (4 of them in one title even), car and pedestrian 'traffic' to interact with and crime related missions to cause mayhem (or be a good citizen). But the game was also actual 3d (albeit at about 10fps).
And GTA was then 2d-ish... on PS1. Now - I never verified this bit, but folks from R* North have apparently cited this game as one of the original inspirations for GTA (UK roots and all that too).

Not a jump from 2D to 3D since I feel that's cheating, but DOOM to Quake in 3 years is insane. Especially considering there was nothing quite like DOOM when DOOM came out. Quake was so based that its engine powered the next FPS revolution too with Half-Life.

Quake's legacy sure is something else. :goog_relieved:
